Saudi files for 'killer' tracking chip patent

A Saudi Arabian inventor has filed for a patent on a potentially lethal
science fiction-style human tracking microchip, the German Patent and
Trademark Office (DPMA) told The Local on Friday.  But the macabre
innovation that enables remote killing will likely be denied copyright
protection.

While the application is still pending further paperwork on his part,
the invention will probably be found to violate paragraph two of the
German Patent Law  which does not allow inventions that transgress
public order or good morals, spokeswoman Stephanie Krüger told The
Local from Munich.

The patent application  entitled Implantation of electronic chips in
the human body for the purposes of determining its geographical
location  was filed on October 30, 2007, but was only published until
last week, or 18 months after submission as required by German law, she
said.

In recent times the number of people sought by security forces has
increased, the Jeddah-based inventor wrote in his summary.

The tiny electronic device, dubbed the Killer Chip by Swiss daily
Tagesanzeiger, would be suited for tracking fugitives from justice,
terrorists, illegal immigrants, criminals, political opponents,
defectors, domestic help, and Saudi Arabians who dont return home from
pilgrimages.

I apply for these reasons and for reasons of state security and the
security of citizens, the statement reads.

After subcutaneous implantation, the chip would send out encrypted
radio waves that would be tracked by satellites to confirm the persons
identity and whereabouts. An alternate model chip could reportedly
release a poison into the carrier if he or she became a security risk.

Foreigners are allowed to apply for patents in Germany through a native
representative, in this case it was a Munich law firm, Krüger told The
Local. Most people apply for a patent in several countries, and this
inventor probably did too.

But the law firm, DTS Munich, is no longer responsible for the
application.

An active mental life will help stave off Alzheimer's and dementia. (AFP)

Australian scientists have, for the first time, shown how staying mentally active can help stave off dementia.

Researchers found those who keep their minds busy in older age can halve the rate at which their brains shrink.

Staying mentally active slows the shrinkage of the critical part of the brain involved in memory, the hippocampus.

Clinical neuroscientist Dr Michael Valenzuela made the discovery in the School of Psychiatry at the University of New South Wales.

"I think it's quite an exciting finding and a strong finding," he said.

"We know that people that are at risk of developing Alzheimer's disease and dementia have a smaller hippocampus to start with,
 so it could be quite important that by staying mentally active we can actually protect this brain area from shrinkage."

An active mental life will help stave off both Alzheimer's and the dementia that develops in about a quarter of people after a stroke.

Bingo or learning a new language both help, but Dr Michael Valenzuela says something as simple as reading can be just
 as good for an ageing brain.

"There's no one particular activity that comes up time and time again as a magical activity; it seems to be more related to
keeping a diverse range of activities," he said.

"Doing something where you are learning or you're being forced to challenge your mind somewhat."

Leave your GPS at home

Scientists are still trying to work out whether they can reverse the shrinkage once it's happened.

But Lynette Moore from Alzheimer's Australia says even if that's not possible, this is a very positive finding.

"The greatest risks of getting dementia are older age and our genes, which are things that of course we can't do anything about," she said.

"But this is another piece of research evidence about what we can do."

Ms Moore says the findings should encourage people at risk to stretch their minds.

"People are generally aware that the 'use it or lose it' principle does apply to people looking after their brain health," she said.

"There's been other research on taxi drivers in London who have to learn about all the streets and it has been shown that
their hippocampi are much larger that your average adult, which again just shows that using it does keep that part of your
 brain as large as possible for as long as possible."

She jokes that leaving your GPS at home could help stave off brain shrinkage.

Women Exposed To High Levels of Pollutant PCB More Likely To Give Birth To Female Children

ScienceDaily (July 16, 2008) — Women exposed to high levels of PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls -- a group of banned environmental pollutants) are less likely to give birth to male children. A new study found that among women from the San Francisco Bay Area, those exposed to higher levels of PCBs during the 50s and 60s, were significantly more likely to give birth to female children.

Similar exposure is thought to have occurred in Wales, after a quarry on the edge of Groesfaen village near Cardiff was used as a toxic dumping ground from 1965 to 1972.

PCBs are persistent organic pollutants identified worldwide as human blood and breast milk contaminants. They were widely used in industry as cooling and insulating fluids for electrical equipment, as well as in construction and domestic products such as varnishes and caulks. PCBs were banned in the 1970s because of their general toxicity and persistence. They are associated with effects on immune, reproductive, nervous, and endocrine systems. Given the high quality measurements, this research provides the strongest evidence to date that PCBs affect sex ratio in human children.

Irva Hertz-Picciotto, the lead author of the study, explains how marked the effect was, "The women most exposed to PCBs were 33% less likely to give birth to male children than the women least exposed". The researchers measured the levels of PCBs in blood taken from pregnant women during a Bay Area study in the 1960s. When they compared these levels to the children's sex, they found that for every one microgram of PCBs per litre of serum, the chance of having a male child fell by 7%.

As Hertz-Picciotto states, "These findings suggest that high maternal PCB concentrations may either favour fertilization by female sperm or result in greater male embryonic or fetal losses. The association could be due to contaminants, PCB metabolites or the PCBs themselves".

This investigation will be useful for assessing problems likely to be faced by populations currently exposed to high levels of PCBs, such as those that rely on fish from contaminated lakes or who live near former manufacturing facilities. Furthermore, other chemicals with a similar structure to PCBs, such as the flame-retardants PBDEs (polybrominated diphenyl ethers), are currently widely used in plastic casings and foam products. According to the authors, "PBDEs share many of the biochemical and toxicologic properties of PCBs. As levels of these substances rise in wildlife and human populations, studies like ours provide an indication of the potential effects of these newer compounds".
