"To ask women to become unnaturally thin is to ask them to relinquish their sexuality."

"Pain is real when you get other people to believe in it. If no one believes in it but you, your pain is madness or hysteria."

"The beauty myth moves for men as a mirage; its power lies in its ever-receding nature.

"Women have face-lifts in a society in which women without them appear to vanish from sight."

All this stuff worked the last time I saw it.  I found the MW on the street
3 blocks over 2 years ago the flat panel mount cost more than a Refurbished
LCD so it joined 2 desktop carcass I scavange the parts and cobble together
a working desk top and give it away free(with lesons) to who ever I may
run into that doesn’t have one.  But time and space and plummeting prices
make that good deed obsolete if not impossible.

Any one in there right mind want’s and can afford a wireless PC $200.00
At places like “the little lap top shop”. Actually  there 2007 flyer says

The marketing program, to be announced today, is called ““Give 1 Get 1,”” in
which Americans and Canadians can buy two laptops for $399.

One of the machines will be given to a child in a developing nation, and the other
one will be shipped to the purchaser by Christmas. The donated computer is a
tax-deductible charitable contribution. The program will run for two weeks, with
orders accepted from Nov. 12 to Nov. 26.

Five Years Ago: Bush's Despicable Eulogy for Paul Wellstone

Yesterday marked the fifth anniversary of the death of Minnesota Democratic Senator Paul Wellstone.
But while much of the liberal blogosphere has remembered Wellstone's fighting spirit, grassroots
populism and prescient courage in opposing the war in Iraq, little attention has been paid to President
Bush's despicable eulogy of Wellstone on that sad day.

As we learned five years ago, this president's smallness and partisanship even extend to the dead.
Commenting on the tragic death of the popular Democratic Senator Paul Wellstone in an October
25, 2002 plane crash, this was the best Bush could muster for an opponent:

"Paul Wellstone was a man of deep convictions, a plain-spoken fellow who did his best for his state
and for his country. May the good Lord bless those who grieve." [Emphasis mine]
Compare to that to his glowing words on June 27, 2003 for the late Republican Senator from South
Carolina, the legendary racist and segregationist Strom Thurmond:

"Senator Strom Thurmond led an extraordinary life. He served in the Army during World War II, earning
a Bronze Star for valor and landing at Normandy on D-Day. He served his country as Senator, Governor,
and state legislator and was a beloved teacher, coach, husband, father, and grandfather. While
campaigning across South Carolina with him in 1988, I saw first hand the tremendous love he had for
his constituents, and the admiration the people of South Carolina had for him. He was also a friend and
I was honored to have hosted his 100th birthday at the White House. Laura joins me in sending our
prayers and condolences to the entire Thurmond family. He will be missed."
In 1994, President Bill Clinton spoke eloquently of the late Richard Nixon, a man who disgraced the
White House and sought to subvert the Constitution. President George W. Bush apparently felt
decorum required no such tribute for the incorruptible Paul Wellstone.

For more, see "The Smallness of King George."

Centro arte contemporanea, via di Città, 126 53100
+39 (0)577 22071  System Error: War Is a Force that Gives Us Meaning 3 Feb—6 May 2007
This is a group show involving more than 40 international artists that has been organised
by Papesse chief curator Lorenzo Fusi and filmmaker-artist Naeem Mohaiemen. The exhibition
focuses on the artists’ responses to war and its effects on society, but it is also a
reflection on the causes of wars. Works on display include videos, sculptures, installations,
comics, video games, and new-media art. The artists range from internationally established
artists (Alfredo Jaar, Chris Marker, Walid Raad and Lebbeus Woods) to newcomers (Chris Koji
Naka, Rheim Alkadhi and Yara el-Sherbini), as well as artists who have never previously shown
in museums or galleries.

Blinky Palermo
All is not what it seems at the Serpentine.

see images page one, page two

Blinky Palermo. American Mafioso and boxing promoter, "owner" of the legendary 60s heavyweight boxer Sonny Liston.
And absolutely nothing to do with the German painter whose work is currently on show at London’s Serpentine Gallery.
Although he did look a bit like him. Which is why plain old Peter Schwarze took the name in 1964, after the seminal
conceptual artist Joseph Beuys suggested the likeness.

There’s a lot of nonsense talked about Blinky, the German one that is, mainly by dealers who want to protect their
business interests (he died young in the 70s, ergo a great investment). But the truth is he’s a footnote, diverting
and little more. An interior designer with ideas above his station, with the work (one-colour canvases and "fabric
paintings", ie shop-bought materials sewn together then stretched across a frame) seemingly more at home in a
restaurant than a gallery. The only sign of life is in the watercolour sketches, but they’re sidelined under glass.

I wonder if the goodfella could draw? Jonathan Carter 28 March 03

Blinky Palermo is at the Serpentine Gallery, Kensington Gardens, London,
 until 18 May 03. Tel 020 7298 1515 for details.

It's here at last! The exhibition that has been on a victory tour around the USA and to Paris and has been
seen by hundreds of thousands of visitors, has landed in Stockholm for one of its four exclusive shows.

OUR PICASSO?
by Jerry Saltz

"Robert Rauschenberg: Combines," Dec. 20, 2005-Apr. 2, 2006, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1000
Fifth Avenue, New York, N.Y. 10028
Even those of us who revere the work of Robert Rauschenberg have to admit that his mad esthetic output,
while jovial and fearless, borders on being suicidal and squandering and can lead to art that peters
out, turns theatrical or becomes formulaic. Although Rauschenberg contributed enormously to postwar
ideas about agglomeration, order, appropriation, duplication, assemblage, collage and photo-into-painting,
his esthetic garrulousness often turns his work into a department store: something scanned, not studied.
Unlike Jasper Johns, whose art relies heavily on people talking almost ad nausea about every detail,
Rauschenberg is so convinced that all things in the world are equal that the work itself often equals out
and gets slushy in the mind. He is a sort of artistic suicide bomber: a true believer who is unafraid
to have his work look cruddy.

Robert Rauschenberg: Combines is the red-hot core of the American 1950 –
a period of optimism and breakthrough.

Robert Rauschenberg was breathtakingly accurate in capturing the atmosphere
and tendencies of the time. In art

history there is a before and an after his Combines.

(More) Being Zapatista Where You Live
Drawing a Line in the Heartland
By JOHN ROSS
excerpt:
["Around the circle at MIRAC (Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action Coalition), the young men
and women who have been the motivators of indocumentado fightback, form outreach commissions,
committees to write the leaflets, and prepare the press releases. May 1st is, of course, a
homegrown American holiday first celebrated 121 years ago this spring when 80,000 immigrant
workers marched up Chicago's Michigan Avenue to the lake in pursuit of the eight hour day.
May 1st is the day of the immigrant worker when we are all invited to hit the streets.

I stood with Romeo from the Immokalee workers who, fresh from wresting a penny a pound more
from Taco Bell for their stoop-labor tomatoes, are now mixing it up with tbe Big Mac and we sang
"Old McDonald had some slaves." Romeo who hails from Huehuetenango laughed solemnly: "John, I was
in Chiapas on the day the Zapatistas rose up against the mal gobierno. We were in the sierra near
Motozintla picking coffee on a finca when they came for us. They were saying Marcos was a Guatemalan
and so the army ran the "chapinos" back across the border." Now Romeo is being a Zapatista where he
lives from day to day, organizing the slaves for a living wage.

II.

The lake ice was breaking up fast over in Madison, the ragged slabs slamming into the shoreline and
splintering into shards of debris, an on-going metaphor for the self-destruct of the Bush braintrust
as the rats scurry for the lifeboats and desert the sinking ship of state. Whether it was natural
phenomena or the shape of the future, the spectacle excited art historian Melanie Herzog who along
with her partner Norm Stockwell, the local alternative radio maven, had invited me into their home
to flop. I am on a low-rent book tour.

Mel has just written an energetic text to 97 year-old social documentarian Milton Rogovin's portraiture
of the working class and below (miners in a dozen different nations) but mostly of the lower west side
in Milton's lifelong stomping grounds of Buffalo. "I take pictures of the poor" Milton snaps, "the rich
have their own photographers." This class war veteran's eye to eye contact (he was an optometrist in
real life) with glistening steel shovelers, hollow-eyed Appalachia kids, and women foundry workers dressed
up in their Saturday night best, form a tapestry of the faces of a forgotten class ("los olvidados")
that Rogovin's shutter never forgets.

Melanie notes that the poetry of the eternal Turkish political prisoner Nazim Hikmet informs Rogovin's
work. One in particular, the imprisoned communist's last letter to his son, touched bone with me:

"Don't live in the world as if you were renting
Or here only for the summer,
But act as if it were your father's house.
Believe in seeds, earth, the sea
But people above all.
Grieve for the withering branch,
The dying star,
And the hurt animal.
But feel for people above all.
Rejoice in all the earth's blessings -
Darkness and light,
The four seasons,
But people above all."

Everywhere I roam on this purposeful trek, talking up being Zapatistas where we live, I've been riffing
about water and corn, the devastated forests, what happens when a language dies and what that
means to people above all. How we serve our communities and the spaces where we live now. Above all.

The defense of corn was a frequent theme in the Midwest where they grow a lot of transgenic maize.
"No hay pais sin maiz" ("there is no country without corn") is how we say Mexico back home. How what
they are doing to Mexican corn, altering its germ plasma and making it something else, commodifying it i
n metric tons sold by the Cargill Corporation is not just ecocide. We charge genocide.

Burning wetlands could solve "crude" problems

Firefighter
A firefighter from the Fire and Emergency Training Institute ignites the surface of a simulated wetland with a blowtorch as part of an experiment to study the effects of oil fires on marsh vegetation. LSU researchers pumped about 150 gallons of diesel fuel onto the surface of the water in a metal tank to examine burning as a possible method for cleaning up oil spills in wetlands.

When LSU researcher Irv Mendelssohn builds a fire, he doesn't bring hot
dogs and marshmallows; he brings diesel oil and a blowtorch.

A professor in LSU's Wetland Biogeochemistry Institute, Mendelssohn is
studying the ability of Louisiana's marsh and swamp land to recover from
an oil fire. Working with LSU research assistant professor Qianxin Lin,
co-principal investigator for the project, Mendelssohn and his research team
ignite simulated wetlands covered in diesel oil as part of a study to determine
if burning is a feasible option for cleaning up oil spills in wetland areas.

Team member Joseph Mullin of the U.S. Department of Interior's Minerals
Management Service said oil is often burned off the surface of open water,
but setting such a fire in the fragile ecosystem of a marsh or swamp could
 be more problematic.

"In an offshore oil spill, clean-up crews can corral the oil and burn it to keep
it off the shore," Mullin said. "But when it gets into the marshes, itUs a
different story."

Charlie Henry of the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration, who works with the research team, said
marshes are frequently burned to prevent uncontrollable fires started by
lightning in dry areas or to encourage the growth of certain types of
vegetation that provide more ideal habitats for wildlife. He said that,
generally, marshes recover quickly from such controlled burns. But the
presence of oil, which contains various toxins and causes fire to burn more
 intensely, could change those results.

It's up to Mendelssohn and his team of LSU, state and federal researchers
to determine whether wetlands will recover from an oil-burn and to find
the optimal conditions under which such a burn should be conducted.

To do this, the team, assisted by firefighters from the LSU Fire and
Emergency Training Institute, recently conducted a series of experimental
wetland burns. They placed potted marsh grass into a metal pool 19-feet
in diameter, pumped more than 150 gallons of diesel oil onto the surface
and ignited it with a blowtorch.

Instruments inside the marsh-grass pots measured heat, energy levels and water temperature and fed
the information to a nearby computer to help the researchers measure conditions before, during and after
the fire. A weather station at the site measured wind direction, temperature and humidity. Other data,
such as the time of day and time of year, were also recorded.

The team performed 10 of these test burns, each time burning eight different plants. Half of the burns
were designed to last 20 minutes, the other half to last five minutes. The researchers will compare data
from all the burns, hoping to pinpoint the best possible conditions for igniting such a fire.

All the fires left only a slight trace of oil on the surface of the water. Mullin said the remaining residue
would biodegrade since the toxins in the oil had been burned away, along with the oil's thick, sticky
consistency.

After the fires burned out, the researchers removed the potted marsh vegetation from the pools and
transported the plants back to an LSU greenhouse, where Mendelssohn and Lin will watch and record
their recoveries. He said it will be about six months before the experiment is completed. By that time,
the researchers will be able to tell how well the plants are recovering.

Mendelssohn said one of the most important factors in a wetland burn is water level. Water acts as an
insulator, protecting the roots of the marsh vegetation from the flames. After the experimental burns,
the grasses that were beneath the surface of the water were still green and healthy, while the upper
portions of the plants had been scorched or burned completely away by the fires. The researchers pointed
out that if the roots were still intact, the plants should make a rapid recovery.

Henry said knowing how much water is needed to protect the vegetation would be crucial in the case
of a real oil spill. He said that while scientists would want to clean up a spill as quickly as possible, they
would be willing to wait for a high tide - or to pump additional water into the wetland,
if necessary - before burning the oil. Mendelssohn's team hopes to pinpoint the exact amount of water
needed to protect vegetation, along with optimal weather conditions.

Mendelssohn said data on these "in-situ," or "in-place," burns is scarce because to date, fewer than
10 such burns in the natural environment in the U.S. have been evaluated.

"An in-situ burn was used to clean up an oil spill in Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge in 1995 in southwestern
Louisiana near Lake Charles," Mendelssohn said. "After three years, the marsh's recovery from that oil
burn is complete. But at the site of some other burns, the marsh has come back
much more slowly. We have to find out why there are good recoveries in some cases and not in others."

Knowing how to handle a wetland oil spill is important, Mendelssohn said, because many of south
Louisiana's oil pipelines run through marshes. If a pipeline leaks or ruptures, scientists should have
a plan for quick action. And he said the clean-up techniques developed in Louisiana could be applied
to wetlands across the globe.

Team member Nelson Bryner of the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Institute of Standards
and Technology said the burning technique is useful because fragile marsh vegetation can be
destroyed by large numbers of people and heavy equipment plowing through it. Therefore, typical
oil-spill clean-up methods involving vast crews of workers, bulldozers and pumps can do more harm
 than good in a marsh.

The researchers said the only drawback to a successful oil burn is the smoke.

"People see the smoke from these burns and see the short-term air pollution, but the long- term
benefits of saving a marsh from an oil spill outweigh the negatives," Henry said.

Henry said the team is using diesel oil in the experiments because it is easier and more inexpensive
to obtain than crude oil and because the lighter oils carried in many of Louisiana's underground
pipelines are similar in consistency to diesel oil.

The researchers do not believe there would be a significant difference in the results if they had used
crude oil, but they hope to conduct more tests in the future with some heavier oils, just to be sure.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology is funding the program in conjunction with the
Minerals Management Service and Louisiana's Applied Oil Spill Research and Development Program.

Other key team members include research associate Kenneth Carney of LSU's Institute for
Environmental Studies; William Walton, William Twilley and Lauren DeLauter of the National Institute
of Standards and Technology; Don Davis of Louisiana's Applied Oil Spill Research and Development
Program; and Martin Van Gundy and Mike Curtis of the LSU Fire and Emergency Training Institute.

Knight Foundation awards grant to Manship School for symposium

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has awarded a $15,000 grant to LSU's Manship
School of Mass Communication to help underwrite a public symposium next year on the state
 of the American press.

The Knight grant will make it possible for the school to bring three distinguished journalists to
campus in April to assess the role of the press and to discuss that topic with students, citizens,
 editors and scholars.

Professor George Lockwood, a Pulitzer Prize-winning editor who holds the Greer Chair at the
Manship School, is organizing the symposium, titled "The Press at the Turn of the Century."

"We are impressed with the dynamic development of the Manship School and with the potential
of this symposium to inform us all on the state of the American press," said Del Brinkman, director
of Journalism Programs for the Knight Foundation.

"The press has fallen into disfavor with many Americans," said Manship School Dean John Hamilton.
"Recent years have seen presidential scandal in Washington, excess coverage of the deaths of
Princess Diana and John F. Kennedy Jr. and continued missteps by trusted journalists. Concerned
with this problem and its consequences for our civic discourse, we're holding a public forum to begin
a discussion on how journalists can restore confidence in a profession badly tarnished by excess
and competition."

The Knight Foundation, established in 1950, awards national grants in journalism, education, arts
and culture. Its fourth program, Community Initiatives, is concentrated in 26 communities where
the Knight brothers published newspapers, but the foundation is wholly separate from and
independent of those newspapers.

In addition to the Knight Foundation's support, the Manship School forum will also get underwriting
help from the LSU Office of Academic Affairs and the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association.
