Reaching back across the centuries this program sheds light on historical attitudes
toward human differences. It assesses the significance of Biblical narratives
including the curse of Ham in the evolution of European concepts of race and goes
on to examine the basis of institutionalized racism entwined with fervent
capitalism on which the transatlantic slave trade operated. The destruction of
Americas indigenous civilizations and the dehumanization and exploitation of
Africans are studied alongside the writings of Enlightenment philosophers and
historians.Experts interviewed include Dr. Orlando Patterson of Harvard University
Dr. Barnor Hesse of Northwestern and Professor James Walvin of the University of York.

During the 19th century racial categorization took on a pseudo-scientific stance.
This program shows how the academic racism of the period helped to spread imperialist
policies across the globe. Sifting through the science of eugenics and it's link
to social Darwinism, the film juxtaposes the racial hygiene theories of Robert Knox,
Francis Galton and Eugene
Fischer with racial warfare in Tasmania, Victorian apathy in famine-wracked India,
and prefacing the Holocaust - horrific German colonization tactics in Namibia.
Expert commentary comes from author David Dabydeen, Dr. Maria Misra of Oxford
University and Professor Catherine Hall of University College London. Contains
graphic footage from concentration camps.
Racism: A History [2007] - 3/3
Episode 3/3: A Savage Legacy
- The third and final episode examines the impact of racism in the 20th Century. By 1900,
European colonial expansion had reached deep into the heart of Africa. Under the rule of
King Leopold II, The Belgian Congo was turned into a vast rubber plantation. Men, women
and children who failed to gather their latex quotas would have their limbs dismembered.
The country became the scene of one of the century's greatest racial genocides, as an
estimated 10 million Africans perished under colonial rule. Contains scenes which some
viewers may find disturbing.

Yeah, I don't know if it's true, but it won't surprise me if it is. A Canadian guy with a big head injury discovered that THC-rich medicinal hemp oil relieved his suffering, but then he also discovered that hemp oil kills cancerous brain cells while leaving the good cells unharmed.
In fact, there's a video of the bad brain cells shriveling up into dead little balls after THC treatment.
SETH: Using the same tests used to judge new chemotherapies, the SETH team discovered that this herbal compound kills human brain tumor cells at a concentration that is nontoxic to normal brain cells. A computerized microscope captured images of the cells every 5 minutes to compile the time-lapse videos. After 20 hours of treatment, ?9-THC kills all cancer cells but leaves normal brain cells alive. Cell death is evidenced by cells shrinking to inanimate whitespheres.
Here's the photos:SETH. Parallel experiments were performed testing the effect of ?9-THC on human brain cancer cells (glioblastoma multiforme, or GBM) and also on normal brain cells. Putting this herbal compound through the same tests that a new chemotherapeutic
agent would go through revealed a potent and remarkably specific anti-cancer effect. Both types of cells were treated with the same concentration of ?9-THC but after 20 hours only the cancer cells died. Cell death is seen in the lower right panel as cells shrinking to inanimate white spheres. For more information about this project, click toLEARN MORE.
More here: The SETH Group: background:
The major active component of the medicinal plant cannabis, ?9-THC, has been shown in experiments with rats to have therapeutic potential against brain tumors. SETH Group scientists Garret Yount, Ph.D. and Sean McAllister, Ph.D. designed experiments in a time-lapse microscope to test whether ?9-THC can stop the growth of human glioblastoma multiforma (GBM) brain cancer cells. Using the same tests that are used to judge new chemotherapies, the team discovered that the herbal compound kills human GBM cells at a concentration that
is nontoxic to normal brain cells. Click here to see Featured Experiment.
future development: Test whether a combination of active components of medicinal cannabis, as present in the plant, will act synergistically
and prove to be a more effective treatment against the growth of brain cancer cells compared to ?9-THC alone.
Implications: No chemotherapy can match this nontoxic anti-cancer action. The implication is that this plant compound could be a safe medicine against brain tumors, without the side effects of chemotherapy. These exciting results may be just the tip of the iceberg, however,
because ?9-THC is only one of many active compounds in medicinal cannabis. Other active constituents of the Cannabis plant (called cannabinoids) are also likely to have a nontoxic anti-cancer action.

UPDATE 12-28-09: I just bumped into a nice list of medical references to THC studies on Very Official Websites - handy!! From user Brinna
@ fluther.com: Why is Hemp Oil illegal when it cures cancer? also introduces me to the idea of the Endocannabinoid system (Wikipedia). Fascinating!
The endocannabinoid system in our bodies regulate our cancer defense – so it makes sense that cannabis works effectively in this area,
and the science backs that up.
For those who dispute the fact that cannabis can cure cancer, I would like to refer you to numerous studies (since 1974!) that show that cannabinoids kills cancer cells, shrink tumors, halts the spread of invasive carcinomas, and prevents occurrence. I don’t know if you have the energy or the interest to follow up these links, but if you do value truth over hearsay and propaganda, then I would suggest you look
at them. First you have to ask yourself: why don’t you know about this? (Then you should get really, really angry).

China leads list of world's richest womenFormer Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping once said, "To get rich is glorious." It seems that Chinese women have taken that to heart.
More than half the world's richest self-made women are from China, according to the Hurun List of Self-Made Women Billionaires, the
findings of which are reported in Tuesday's Financial Times.
The world's three richest women are Chinese, according to the list, which compiles information on the wealthiest people in China,
as are 11 of the top 20 on the list, the newspaper said.
The head of recycled paper company Nine Dragons Paper, Zhang Yin (shown above), ranks as the world's wealthiest self-made woman
with a fortune estimated to be $5.6 billion, while Wu Yajun of Longfor Property comes in second with $4.1 billion. Chen Lihua of
Hong Kong conglomerate Fuhua International is third with a fortune of $4 billion, the FT said.
Spaniard Rosalia Mera of the Zara fashion company is the world's richest non-Chinese with $3.5 billion. U.S. television show host Oprah Winfrey ranks at ninth with a fortune worth $2.3 billion.
Why is China dominating the list of richest women? The Hurun Report identifies the Communist party's ending of gender discrimination in China, the paper said. Working mothers in China and other "BRIC" nations (such as Brazil, or India) are also able to depend on a larger
pool of friends and family than their American and European peers when it comes to childcare, according to the report.
The FT also cites a study from the Centre for Work-Life Policy in New York that shows Chinese women are among the most ambitious
on earth (76 percent of women in China aspire to top jobs, compared with 52 percent of women in the United States, the report found).

THIS LIGHT Made from Recycled Plastic Bottles
by Ali Kriscenski, 06/12/08
filed under: Green Lighting, Recycled Materials
The sibling team of Reta Howell and Vana Howell of THIS Gallery have taken recycling into their own creative hands with their THIS Light series. Made from discarded plastic bottles that the two salvage locally, THIS Light turns landfill destined “trash” into delightfully repurposeful lamps. Each fixture is original and handmade, and incorporates every piece of collected plastic into the design. The results
are an enlightening display that also serves as a beautiful “reduce, reuse and recycle” reminder.
The Howell sisters scour local ball parks, school grounds and public spaces for plastic bottles to rescue materials from ending up in landfills
or floating out into nature on currents and winds. Their found objects of choice are gathered, 30-55 per lamp, and then hardened with a fusion process that results in a glass-like look. These repurposed materials take new form in fun lamps with decorative parts that will last
for generations. All the lamps in the THIS Light series are designed to use CFL bulbs.
THIS Gallery currently has a special promotion going on right now where if a customer ships 3 cases of empty bottles, they’ll receive
$100 off the purchase of a lamp.

Garbage: Another environmental claim proven to be hyped

From Oregon State University:
Oceanic “garbage patch” not nearly as big as portrayed in media
CORVALLIS, Ore. – There is a lot of plastic trash floating in the Pacific Ocean, but claims that the “Great Garbage Patch” between
California and Japan is twice the size of Texas are grossly exaggerated, according to an analysis by an Oregon State University scientist.
Further claims that the oceans are filled with more plastic than plankton, and that the patch has been growing tenfold each decade
since the 1950s are equally misleading, pointed out Angelicque “Angel” White, an assistant professor of oceanography at Oregon State.
“There is no doubt that the amount of plastic in the world’s oceans is troubling, but this kind of exaggeration undermines the credibility
of scientists,” White said. “We have data that allow us to make reasonable estimates; we don’t need the hyperbole. Given the observed concentration of plastic in the North Pacific, it is simply inaccurate to state that plastic outweighs plankton, or that we have observed
an exponential increase in plastic.”
White has pored over published literature and participated in one of the few expeditions solely aimed at understanding the abundance of plastic debris and the associated impact of plastic on microbial communities. That expedition was part of research funded by the National Science Foundation through C-MORE, the Center for Microbial Oceanography: Research and Education.
The studies have shown is that if you look at the actual area of the plastic itself, rather than the entire North Pacific subtropical gyre, the hypothetically “cohesive” plastic patch is actually less than 1 percent of the geographic size of Texas.
“The amount of plastic out there isn’t trivial,” White said. “But using the highest concentrations ever reported by scientists produces a patch that is a small fraction of the state of Texas, not twice the size.”
Another way to look at it, White said, is to compare the amount of plastic found to the amount of water in which it was found. “If we were to filter the surface area of the ocean equivalent to a football field in waters having the highest concentration (of plastic) ever recorded,” she said, “the amount of plastic recovered would not even extend to the 1-inch line.”
Recent research by scientists at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution found that the amount of plastic, at least in the Atlantic Ocean,
hasn’t increased since the mid-1980s – despite greater production and consumption of materials made from plastic, she pointed out.
“Are we doing a better job of preventing plastics from getting into the ocean?” White said. “Is more plastic sinking out of the surface waters? Or is it being more efficiently broken down? We just don’t know. But the data on hand simply do not suggest that ‘plastic patches’
have increased in size. This is certainly an unexpected conclusion, but it may in part reflect the high spatial and temporal variability of
plastic concentrations in the ocean and the limited number of samples that have been collected.”
The hyperbole about plastic patches saturating the media rankles White, who says such exaggeration can drive a wedge between the
public and the scientific community. One recent claim that the garbage patch is as deep as the Golden Gate Bridge is tall is completely unfounded, she said.
“Most plastics either sink or float,” White pointed out. “Plastic isn’t likely to be evenly distributed through the top 100 feet of the water column.”
White says there is growing interest in removing plastic from the ocean, but such efforts will be costly, inefficient, and may have unforeseen consequences. It would be difficult, for example, to “corral” and remove plastic particles from ocean waters without inadvertently removing phytoplankton, zooplankton, and small surface-dwelling aquatic creatures.
“These small organisms are the heartbeat of the ocean,” she said. “They are the foundation of healthy ocean food chains and immensely more abundant than plastic debris.”
The relationship between microbes and plastic is what drew White and her C-MORE colleagues to their analysis in the first place. During
a recent expedition, they discovered that photosynthetic microbes were thriving on many plastic particles, in essence confirming that
plastic is prime real estate for certain microbes.
White also noted that while plastic may be beneficial to some organisms, it can also be toxic. Specifically, it is well-known that plastic
debris can adsorb toxins such as PCB.
“On one hand, these plastics may help remove toxins from the water,” she said. “On the other hand, these same toxin-laden particles
may be ingested by fish and seabirds. Plastic clearly does not belong in the ocean.”
Among other findings, which White believes should be part of the public dialogue on ocean trash:
Calculations show that the amount of energy it would take to remove plastics from the ocean is roughly 250 times the mass of the
plastic itself;
Plastic also covers the ocean floor, particularly offshore of large population centers. A recent survey from the state of California found
that 3 percent of the southern California Bight’s ocean floor was covered with plastic – roughly half the amount of ocean floor covered
by lost fishing gear in the same location. But little, overall, is known about how much plastic has accumulated at the bottom of the
ocean, and how far offshore this debris field extends;
It is a common misperception that you can see or quantify plastic from space. There are no tropical plastic islands out there and, in
fact, most of the plastic isn’t even visible from the deck of a boat;
There are areas of the ocean largely unpolluted by plastic. A recent trawl White conducted in a remote section of water between
Easter Island and Chile pulled in no plastic at all.
There are other issues with plastic, White said, including the possibility that floating debris may act as a vector for introducing invasive
species into sensitive habitats.
“If there is a takeaway message, it’s that we should consider it good news that the ‘garbage patch’ doesn’t seem to be as bad as advertised,” White said, “but since it would be prohibitively costly to remove the plastic, we need to focus our efforts on preventing
more trash from fouling our oceans in the first place.”

Hoping to learn more about one of the most glaring examples of waste and environmental pollution on earth, a group of scientists will
set sail from San Francisco today to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a massive vortex of floating plastic trash estimated by some
researchers to be twice the size of Texas.
The bobbing debris field, where currents swirl everything from discarded fishing line to plastic bottles into one soupy mess, is located
about 1,000 miles west of California.
"This is a problem that is kind of out of sight, out of mind, but it is having devastating impacts on the ocean. I felt we needed to do something about it," said Mary Crowley, co-founder of Project Kaisei, a nonprofit expedition that is partnering on the voyage with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla.
Crowley — a Sausalito resident who owns a yacht chartering company, Ocean Voyages — has been sailing the Pacific Ocean for nearly
40 years.
"More and more now, you see signs of marine debris and plastic everyplace. You can be at very remote beaches, and you'll see plastic bottles, barrels, toys and a lot of plastic fishing nets," she said.
Not much is known about the garbage patch phenomenon, including when it began forming or even its exact boundaries. Scientists
believe trash — most of it plastic that won't decompose — washes down storm drains and rivers from places like the Bay Area or
Japan, eventually drifting

into several large ocean vortices where currents swirl like water in a drain.
Crowley formed a nonprofit group, Ocean Voyages Institute, which has helped raise $500,000 to send two ships to the garbage patch.
Today, one of those ships, the 151-foot Kaisei — which means "ocean planet" in Japanese — sets sail for a 30-day voyage from San
Francisco.
The other ship, the 170-foot New Horizon, owned by the University of California-San Diego, left Southern California on Sunday. It has
a crew of about 20 people, many of them graduate students in marine biology, funded by a $600,000 grant from the University of
California.
Both ships will study the garbage patch's size, how the plastic affects wildlife and whether it may be possible to clean some of it up.
"We are going to try to target the highest-plastic areas we see to begin to understand the scope of the problem," said Miriam Goldstein,
chief scientist of the Scripps expedition. "The team of graduate students will be studying everything from phytoplankton to zooplankton
to small midwater fish."
Additionally, the Kaisei will take a documentary film crew and a group of international scientists. They will conduct similar research to the Scripps

(Click on image to enlarge.)scientists, along with experiments on whether certain types of netting and other equipment can efficiently remove the trash, perhaps recycling it or converting it into fuel during future cleanup voyages.
But cleaning up the Pacific garbage patch may not be possible.
First, most of the plastic is broken into tiny fragments. Plastic becomes brittle from the sun's ultraviolet radiation and eventually breaks
up into minuscule pieces like confetti. Billions float just below the surface in the garbage patch, which is located north of Hawaii but
shifts in size and location depending on the season and the currents.
"The large pieces, it is possible to pull them out of the ocean," said Holly Bamford, director of the marine debris program for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Silver Spring, Md.
"The small plastic bits, that's to be determined. Until we understand the extent, the size and exactly where they are, we won't be able
to make a determination of how they can be removed or if they can be removed."
Bamford, who has a doctorate in atmospheric and oceanic chemistry, said the plastic harms wildlife. Not only have albatrosses and other
sea birds died from ingesting plastic, which fills their stomachs without providing nutrition, but also plastic pieces can absorb toxic
chemicals, which then could migrate up the food chain, even potentially contaminating fish that humans eat, she said.
Old plastic fishing lines, some from drift nets that weigh several tons, also entangle thousands of sea turtles, whales and marine mammals
every year.
From 1996 to 2006, the NOAA removed 1.1 million pounds of derelict fishing gear from the reefs and beaches of the Northwestern
Hawaiian Islands, a chain of mostly uninhabited atolls and islands that stretch 1,500 miles from Kauai to Midway, near the garbage
patch. The beaches on those islands, because of their proximity to the currents known as the North Pacific Gyre, often are littered
with cigarette lighters, fishing line, floats, toothbrushes, bottle caps and other floating junk, some of which is decades old.
In the central Pacific, there are up to six pounds of marine litter to every pound of plankton, and roughly 46,000 pieces of plastic litter
are floating on every square mile of the oceans, according to a 2006 report from the United Nations Environment Programme.
"This stuff is ubiquitous," Bamford said. "Plastics break into smaller and smaller pieces, but they don't decompose."

'Great Garbage Patch' in the Pacific Ocean not so great claim scientists
Environmental scientists have been criticised for exaggerating the size of an "island" of plastic waste said to be swirling around in the
Pacific Ocean after a study finds that it is 200 times smaller than claimed.
One popular claim is that the size of the patch is twice that of the state of Texas - half a million square miles or the equivalent of 20
times the size of England
By Richard Alleyne, Science Correspondent 7:00AM GMT 06 Jan 2011 148 Comments
Claims that the "Great Garbage Patch" between California and Japan is twice the size of Texas is "grossly exaggerated" said the research
which reckons it is more like one per cent the size.
Further reports that the oceans are filled with more plastic than plankton, and that the patch has been growing tenfold each decade
since the 1950s are equally misleading, the new research claimed.
In reality it often cannot even be seen from the deck of a passing boat, said the latest analysts from the Oregon State University
professor of oceanography Angelicque White.
The scientist took part in a recent marine expedition to examine the mass of plastic that is floating in the ocean and found there was
a problem.
But genuine scientific concerns are undermined by scare tactics from those proclaiming the trash patch is so big that there is more
plastic than plankton in the Pacific.

'Great Garbage Patch': size doesn't matter

Prof White said: "There is no doubt that the amount of plastic in the world's oceans is troubling, but this kind of exaggeration
undermines the credibility of scientists.
"We have data that allow us to make reasonable estimates. We don't need the hyperbole.
"Given the observed concentration of plastic in the North Pacific, it is simply inaccurate to state that plastic outweighs plankton, or
that we have observed an exponential increase in plastic."
One popular claim is that the size of the patch is twice that of the state of Texas – half a million square miles or the equivalent of 20
times the size of England.
But while the plastic stretches across the surface, its mass compared to the amount of water means it only takes up a tiny fraction
of its proclaimed area, said Prof White.
"The amount of plastic out there isn't trivial," she said.
"But the patch ... is a small fraction of the state of Texas, not twice the size."
Prof White said plastic can be toxic to some marine life forms but it can absorb other toxins – there is evidence that some organisms
are breeding on tiny plastic debris.
However, it is also a danger to seabirds and fish and she said: "Plastic clearly does not belong in the ocean."
Getting rid of it is too expensive and could damage the fragile ecology under the ocean, she said. Preventing more from entering the
water should now be the main focus instead.
She added: "If there is a takeaway message, it's that we should consider it good news that the 'garbage patch' doesn't seem to be
as bad as advertised.
"Since it would be prohibitively costly to remove the plastic, we need to focus our efforts on preventing more trash from fouling our
oceans in the first place."
Recent research by scientists at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution found that the amount of plastic, at least in the Atlantic
Ocean, hasn't increased since the mid-1980s – despite greater production and consumption of materials made from plastic, she pointed
out.

The Visitor from the Future / ?????? ?? ???????? (1984). Part 2.
The Visitor from the Future is a five-part Soviet television miniseries, made at Gorky
Film Studio, first aired in 1985. It is based on the novel "One Hundred Years Ahead"
by Kir Bulychev.
This is a fascinating story of time travel, friendship, battle of good and evil. 11 year
old Kolya Gerasimov who discovers a time machine in a basement of an old house in Moscow
and gets transferred into the 21st century. Then he is allowed to look around, everything
seems to be different. He discovers a near-perfect, utopian society where robots play
guitars and write poetry, everyone is kind to each other and people enjoy everything
technology has to offer...
This film is an excellent example of how a touching and an exciting story could be told
without the use of extravagant special effects.

==============BILL COSBY: KEEPING IT REAL
I like the African-American phrase “keepin’ it real.”
This is what Bill Cosby (whose humor I have often enjoyed since the mid-1960s; I am now 56)
did in a famous address to the NAACP in 2004: Bill Cosby Address at the NAACP’ on the 50th
Anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education
delivered 17 May 2004, Constitution Hall, Washington D.C.

Ladies and gentlemen, these people set, they opened the doors, they gave us the right, and today, ladies and gentlemen,
in our cities and public schools we have fifty percent drop out. In our own neighborhood, we have men in prison. No longer
is a person embarrassed because they’re pregnant without a husband. No longer is a boy considered an embarrassment if
he tries to run away from
being the father of the unmarried child.
I’m talking about these people who cry when their son is standing there in an orange suit. Where
were you when he was two? Where were you when he was twelve? (applause) Where were you
when he was eighteen, and how come you don’t know he had a pistol? And where is his father,
and why don’t you know where he is? And why doesn’t the father show up to talk to this boy?
The church is only open on Sunday. And you can’t keep asking Jesus to ask doing things for you.
You can’t keep asking that God will find a way. God is tired of you. God was there when they won
all those cases. 50 in a row. That’s where God was because these people were doing something.
And God said, “I’m going to find a way.” I wasn’t there when God said it… I’m making this up.
But it sounds like what God would do.
We cannot blame white people. White people… white people don’t live over there. They close up the shop early. The Korean ones still don’t know us as well…they stay open 24 hours.
50 percent drop out rate, I’m telling you, and people in jail, and women having children by five, six different men. Under what excuse, I want somebody to love me, and as soon as you have it, you
forget to parent. Grandmother, mother, and great grandmother in the same room, raising children,
and the child knows nothing about love or respect of any one of the three of them. All this child
knows is “gimme, gimme, gimme.” These people want to buy the friendship of a child….and the
child couldn’t care less. Those of us sitting out here who have gone on to some college or whatever we’ve done, we still fear our parents. And these people are not parenting. They’re buying things for
the kid. $500 sneakers, for what? They won’t buy or spend $250 on Hooked on Phonics.
A Kenneth Clark, somewhere in his home in upstate New York…just looking ahead. Thank God, he doesn’t know what’s going on, thank God. But these people, the ones up here in the balcony fought
so hard. Looking at the incarcerated, these are not political criminals. These are people going around stealing Coca Cola. People getting shot in the back of the head over a piece of pound cake! Then
we all run out and are outraged, “The cops shouldn’t have shot him.” What the hell was he doing
with the pound cake in his hand? I wanted a piece of pound cake just as bad as anybody else. And I looked at it and I had no money. And something called parenting said if get caught with it you’re
going to embarrass your mother. Not you’re going to get your butt kicked. No. You’re going to embarrass your mother. You’re going to embarrass your family.
Are you not paying attention, people with their hat on backwards, pants down around the crack.
Isn’t that a sign of something, or are you waiting for Jesus to pull his pants up. Isn’t it a sign of something when she’s got her dress all the way up to the crack…and got all kinds of needles and
things going through her body. What part of Africa did this come from? We are not Africans.
Those people are not Africans, they don’t know a damned thing about Africa. With names like
Shaniqua, Shaligua, Mohammed and all that crap and all of them are in jail. (When we give these
kind of names to our children, we give them the strength and inspiration in the meaning of those names. What’s the point of giving them strong names if there is not parenting and values
backing it up.)
Brown Versus the Board of Education is no longer the white person’s problem. We’ve got to take the neighborhood back. We’ve got to go in there. Just forget telling your child to go to the Peace Corps.
It’s right around the corner. It’s standing on the corner. It can’t speak English. It doesn’t want to
speak English. I can’t even talk the way these people talk. “Why you ain’t where you is go, ra,”
I don’t know who these people are. And I blamed the kid until I heard the mother talk. Then I heard
the father talk. This is all in the house. You used to talk a certain way on the corner and you got
into the house and switched to English. Everybody knows it’s important to speak English except
these knuckleheads. You can’t land a plane with “why you ain’t…” You can’t be a doctor with that
kind of crap coming out of your mouth. There is no Bible that has that kind of language. Where did these people get the idea that they’re moving ahead on this? Well, they know they’re not, they’re
just hanging out in the same place, five or six generations sitting in the projects when you’re just supposed to stay there long enough to get a job and move out.
Now look, I’m telling you. It’s not what they’re doing to us. It’s what we’re not doing. 50 percent
drop out. Look, we’re raising our own ingrown immigrants. These people are fighting hard to be ignorant. There’s no English being spoken, and they’re walking and they’re angry. Oh God, they’re angry and they have pistols and they shoot and they do stupid things. And after they kill somebody, they don’t have a plan. Just murder somebody. Boom. Over what? A pizza? And then run to the
poor cousin’s house. They sit there and the cousin says “What are you doing here?” “I just killed somebody, man.” “What?” “I just killed somebody, I’ve got to stay here.” “No, you don’t.” “Well,
give me some money, I’ll go…” “Where are you going?” “North Carolina.” Everybody wanted to
go to North Carolina. But the police know where you’re going because your cousin has a record.
I’m saying Brown Vs. Board of Education. We’ve got to hit the streets, ladies and gentlemen. I’m winding up, now , no more applause. I’m saying, look at the Black Muslims. There are Black Muslims standing on the street corners and they say so forth and so on, and we’re laughing at them because they have bean pies and all that, but you don’t read “Black Muslim gunned down while chastising
drug dealer.” You don’t read that. They don’t shoot down Black Muslims. You understand me.
Muslims tell you to get out of the neighborhood. When you want to clear your neighborhood out,
first thing you do is go get the Black Muslims, bean pies and all. And your neighborhood is then
clear. The police can’t do it.
I’m telling you Christians, what’s wrong with you? Why can’t you hit the streets? Why can’t you
clean it out yourselves? It’s our time now, ladies and gentlemen. It is our time. And I’ve got good
news for you. It’s not about money. It’s about you doing something ordinarily that we do—get in somebody else’s business. It’s time for you to not accept the language that these people are
speaking, which will take them nowhere. What the hell good is Brown V. Board of Education if
nobody wants it?
What is it with young girls getting after some girl who wants to still remain a virgin. Who are
these sick black people, and where did they come from, and why haven’t they been parented
to shut up? To go up to girls and try to get a club where “you are nobody..,” this is a sickness,
ladies and gentlemen, and we are not paying attention to these children. These are children.
They don’t know anything. They don’t have anything. They’re homeless people. All they know
how to do is beg. And you give it to them, trying to win their friendship. And what are they
good for? And then they stand there in an orange suit and you drop to your knees, “He didn’t do anything, he didn’t do anything.” Yes, he did do it. And you need to have an orange suit on too.
We have to begin to build in the neighborhood, have restaurants, have cleaners, have pharmacies,
have real estate, have medical buildings instead of trying to rob them all. And so, ladies and
gentlemen, please, Dorothy Height, wherever she’s sitting, she didn’t do all that stuff so that
she could hear somebody say “I can’t stand algebra, I can’t stand…” and “what you is.”
It’s horrible.
Basketball players, multimillionaires, can’t write a paragraph. Football players, multimillionaires,
can’t read. Yes. Multimillionaires. Well, Brown v. Board of Education, where are we today? It’s
there. They paved the way. What did we do with it? The white man, he’s laughing, got to be
laughing. 50 percent drop out, rest of them in prison.
You got to tell me that if there was parenting, help me, if there was parenting, he wouldn’t have picked up the Coca Cola bottle and walked out with it to get shot in the back of the head. He wouldn’t have. Not if he loved his parents. And not if they were parenting! Not if the father would come home. Not if the boy hadn’t dropped the sperm cell inside of the girl and the girl had said, “No, you have to come back here and be the father of this child.” Not: “I don’t have to.”
Therefore, you have the pile up of these sweet beautiful things born by nature raised by no one. Give them presents. You’re raising pimps. That’s what a pimp is. A pimp will act nasty to you so you have to go out and get them something. And then you bring it back and maybe he or she hugs you. And that’s why pimp is so famous. They’ve got a drink called the “Pimp-something.” You all wonder what that’s about, don’t you? Well, you’re probably going to let Jesus figure it out for you. Well, I’ve got something to tell you about Jesus. When you go to the church, look at the stained glass things of Jesus. Look at them. Is Jesus smiling? Not in one picture. So, tell your friends. Let’s try to do something. Let’s try to make Jesus smile. Let’s start parenting. Thank you, thank you.

Exhibition Statement:
Historically perceived as expressive, representational and ornamental, drawing remains a constant and gratifying means of artistic expression.
Rough and Ready features the work of Brian Haverlock and Tim Jaeger, two artists dealing with drawing. Each artist demonstrates his individual act of mark making and spatial construction, yet they both address drawing’s formal and informal applications. Whether drawing is for them a glimpse or labored idea, these two artists affirm reality while deep-rooted in art history’s wellspring of visual communication.

Laptop Batteries That Don't Crap Out a Year Into Their Life

It's a common problem—your shiny new laptop isn't looking so shiny or new anymore, and what's that? The battery barely holds a charge now? Ugh. I'm skeptical of Leyden Energy's claims, but would give their batteries a shot.
They claim their lithium-ion, 440watt hours per liter batteries don't depreciate for at least three years (supposedly normal ones start losing their charge around the 18-month-mark), and as they come with a three-year warranty, that's something you can obviously take them to fault with if you discover it's all bullshit.
Able to operate in higher temperatures than normal batteries, they can also be charged over 1,000 times. While they'll cost a lot more than the usual laptop batteries (supposedly less than double the average cost), it might be a cost worth paying. They'll be available online in the coming weeks in Canada at Dr. Battery, and hopefully in other countries after that. [Leyden Energy via Gigaom]

And then you have DELL.
My neighbor bought one and 1 year to the date it said it did not recognize the battery any more hence it would not charge it any longer.
Althoung my neighbor always uses it plugged and rarely unplugs the laptop.
Dell said the battery was already past it's life / warranty and wanted another $90 for a new one.
We bought one for $40 on line.
A quick search on the web yielded 1000's of people in the same predicament.
I just waiting for him to get a note for a class action suit... it's bound to happen. Dell screwed up big time on the battery scam.

Most manufacturers batteries would not last long under those usage scenarios. Li-Ion batteries like small, frequent charges/discharges. I don't know about the issue with not recognizing the battery though.

This is how I destroyed my first battery. Don't let the laptop plugged in all the time, use the battery as much as possible.
Plus, don't let it go under 10% and try to keep it as cold as possible (avoid resting the laptop on your lap).

It all depends on the battery quality to begin with. Not all batteries are created equal. I leave my laptop plugged in most of the time. I use the battery a few times a month and usually for short periods of time. Occasionally I have to use the battery heavily and during those times it performs very well. My laptop is several years old. Being plugged in all the time does not KILL a battery.... a poorly designed charging circuit that overcharges your battery kills a battery... draining your battery to zero multiple times kills the battery. Heat kills the battery. Lots of things will KILL a battery, but simply leaving it plugged in does not unless there are other defects involved. Just wish manufacturers were held responsible for their design flaws.
Notably: I have had the worst experiences with Dell laptops. Bad / weak lcd panel connectors, batteries that die and won't take a charge in less than a year, and many other problems. Personally, I prefer HP. They aren't perfect, but so far no one has been. My ex-Sony laptop had to have a motherboard replaced 3 times. It kept frying.
I will never buy a Dell or Sony based on my horrible experiences with them. I've had to fix HPs for people, but usually not for obvious design flaw type problems unless it is just a poor quality part (wifi card, bluetooth, etc)

I know and understand what you are saying... battery management is something that always has to be done from laptops to cameras to power tools, etc...
But one thing is to have a battery perfectly fine one day,
(as a matter of fact my neighbor used the battery a week prior for about 2½ hrs with a movie with no problem)
... and the next it says that it cannot recognize the battery and will not charge it.
(based on a chip in the battery artificially placing an expiration date / system ON time or charge cycle).
That is total and utter BS.
I have some old Dell Presarios in the closet that were given to me. A fully charged battery runs for about 5 minutes....
The laptop does not tell me that it cannot longer "recognize" the battery and thus will NOT charge it.
This is not a case of batteries lasting less and less time after a charge.... this is a case of working perfect to zero form oone day to the other.
And not just my neighbor, but 1000's of users complaining about the same thing.
That is a scam right there.

That could be a BIOS problem. I had that on my fairly new Adamo and after updating the BIOS, the laptop "recognized" the battery again.
