"Great Wall of America" Anti-Fence Propaganda

American Patrol Report -- June 25
Time Magazine photo shows people climbing over fence - designed to climb.

This week Time Magazine's cover story is the "Great Wall of China." It purports to tell the story of the border fence. It does little to inform, and much to confuse.
It begins by telling of a group of people attempting to climb over the brand-new fence west of Naco, Arizona, a fence we said was "designed to climb." This just happens to be on the Ladd Ranch, where Ladd himself says the fence is a joke.
They described the fence as "the U.S. government's new $1 million-per-mile border-security fence." Where in the hell did they get this number? At a minimum, a properly designed fence will cost $3 million per mile. In fact, a flimsy fence at Sasabe cost $4.8 million per mile
Time goes on to ask; "If a billion-dollar barrier can't stop children and seniors in broad daylight, what's the point?" They say the truth is "complicated."
The truth isn't complicated. The truth is that the Department of Homeland Security does not want to stop illegal aliens from entering from Mexico so they design the system to fail.
Time discusses the issue within the presidential campaign, but fails to mention that McCain promised to make border security a priority, whereas Obama didn't. I find it strange that a Time cover story about the border fence fails to mention this important distinction. -- Click to continue reading

Introduction
I'm Dick Sutphen and this tape is a studio-recorded, expanded version of a talk I delivered at the World Congress of Professional Hypnotists Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada. Although the tape carries a copyright to protect it from unlawful duplication for sale by other companies, in this case, I invite individuals to make copies and give them to friends or anyone in a position to communicate this information.
Although I've been interviewed about the subject on many local and regional radio and TV talk shows, large-scale mass communication appears to be blocked, since it could result in suspicion or investigation of the very media presenting it or the sponsors that support the media. Some government agencies do not want this information generally known. Nor do the Born-Again Christian movement, cults, and many human-potential trainings.
Everything I will relate only exposes the surface of the problem. I don't know how the misuse of these techniques can be stopped. I don't think it is possible to legislate against that which often cannot be detected; and if those who legislate are using these techniques, there is little hope of affecting laws to govern usage. I do know that the first step to initiate change is to generate interest. In this case, that will probably only result from an underground effort.
In talking about this subject, I am talking about my own business. I know it, and I know how effective it can be. I produce hypnosis and subliminal tapes and, in some of my seminars, I use conversion tactics to assist participants to become independent and self-sufficient. But, anytime I use these techniques, I point out that I am using them, and those attending have a choice to participate or not. They also know what the desired result of participation will be.
So, to begin, I want to state the most basic of all facts about brainwashing: In the entire history of man, no one has ever been brainwashed and realized, or believed, that he had been brainwashed. Those who have been brainwashed will usually passionately defend their manipulators, claiming they have simply been "shown the light" ...or have been transformed in miraculous ways.
The Birth of Conversion: Brainwashing in Christian Revivalism in 1735.
Conversion is a "nice" word for brainwashing...and any study of brainwashing has to begin with a study of Christian revivalism in eighteenth century America. Apparently, Jonathan Edwards accidentally discovered the techniques during a religious crusade in 1735 in Northampton, Massachusetts. By inducing guilt and acute apprehension and by increasing the tension, the "sinners" attending his revival meetings would break down and completely submit. Technically, what Edwards was doing was creating conditions that wipe the brain slate clean so that the mind accepts new programming. The problem was that the new input was negative. He would tell them, "You're a sinner! You're destined for hell!"
As a result, one person committed suicide and another attempted suicide. And the neighbors of the suicidal converts related that they, too, were affected so deeply that, although they had found "eternal salvation," they were obsessed with a diabolical temptation to end their own lives.
Once a preacher, cult leader, manipulator or authority figure creates the brain phase to wipe the brain-slate clean, his subjects are wide open. New input, in the form of suggestion, can be substituted for their previous ideas. Because Edwards didn't turn his message positive until the end of the revival, many accepted the negative suggestions and acted, or desired to act, upon them.
Charles J. Finney was another Christian revivalist who used the same techniques four years later in mass religious conversions in New York. The techniques are still being used today by Christian revivalists, cults, human-potential trainings, some business rallies, and the United States Armed services...to name just a few.
Let me point out here that I don't think most revivalist preachers realize or know they are using brainwashing techniques. Edwards simply stumbled upon a technique that really worked, and others copied it and have continued to copy it for over two hundred years. And the more sophisticated our knowledge and technology become, the more effective the conversion. I feel strongly that this is one of the major reasons for the increasing rise in Christian fundamentalism, especially the televised variety, while most of the orthodox religions are declining.
The Three Brain Phases: The Pavlovian Explanation
The Christians may have been the first to successfully formulate brainwashing, but we have to look to Pavlov, the Russian scientist, for a technical explanation. In the early 1900s, his work with animals opened the door to further investigations with humans. After the revolution in Russia, Lenin was quick to see the potential of applying Pavlov's research to his own ends.
Three distinct and progressive states of transmarginal inhibition were identified by Pavlov. The first is the equivalent phase, in which the brain gives the same response to both strong and weak stimuli. The second is the paradoxical phase, in which the brain responds more actively to weak stimuli than to strong. And the third is the ultra-paradoxical phase, in which conditioned responses and behavior patterns turn from positive to negative or from negative to positive.
With the progression through each phase, the degree of conversion becomes more effective and complete. The way to achieve conversion are many and varied, but the usual first step in religious or political brainwashing is to work on the emotions of an individual or group until they reach an abnormal level of anger, fear, exitement, or nervous tension.
The progressive result of this mental condition is to impair judgement and increase suggestibility. The more this condition can be maintained or intensified, the more it compounds. Once catharsis, or the first brain phase, is reached, the complete mental takeover becomes easier. Existing mental programming can be replaced with new patterns of thinking and behavior.
Other often-used physiological weapons to modify normal brain functions are fasting, radical or high sugar diets, physical discomforts, regulation of breathing, mantra chanting in meditation, the disclosure of awesome mysteries, special lighting and sound effects, programmed response to incense, or intoxicating drugs.
The same results can be obtained in contemporary psychiatric treatment by electric shock treatments and even by purposely lowering a person's blood sugar level with insulin injections.
Before I talk about exactly how some of the techniques are applied, I want to point out that hypnosis and conversion tactics are two distinctly different things--and that conversion techniques are far more powerful. However, the two are often mixed...with powerful results.
How Revivalist Preachers Work
If you'd like to see a revivalist preacher at work, there are probably several in your city. Go to the church or tent early and sit in the rear, about three-quarters of the way back. Most likely repetitive music will be played while the people come in for the service. A repetitive beat, ideally ranging from 45 to 72 beats per minute (a rhythm close to the beat of the human heart), is very hypnotic and can generate an eyes-open altered state of consciousness in a very high percentage of people. And, once you are in an alpha state, you are at least 25 times as suggestible as you would be in full beta consciousness. The music is probably the same for every service, or incorporates the same beat, and many of the people will go into an altered state almost immediately upon entering the sanctuary. Subconsciously, they recall their state of mind from previous services and respond according to the post-hypnotic programming.
Watch the people waiting for the service to begin. Many will exhibit external signs of trance--body relaxation and slightly dilated eyes. Often, they begin swaying back and forth with their hands in the air while sitting in their chairs. Next, the assistant pastor will probably come out. He usually speaks with a pretty good "voice roll."
The "Voice Roll" Technique
A "voice roll" is a patterned, paced style used by hypnotists when inducing a trance. It is also used by many lawyers, several of whom are highly trained hypnotists, when they desire to entrench a point firmly in the minds of the jurors. A voice roll can sound as if the speaker were talking to the beat of a metronome or it may sound as though he were emphasizing every word in a monotonous, patterned style. The words will usually be delivered at the rate of 45 to 60 beats per minute, maximizing the hypnotic effect.
The Build-up Process: Inducing Altered States
Now the assistant pastor begins the "build-up" process. He induces an altered state of consciousness and/or begins to generate the excitement and the expectations of the audience. Next, a group of young women in "sweet and pure" chiffon dresses might come out to sing a song. Gospel songs are great for building excitement and involvement. In the middle of the song, one of the girls might be "smitten by the spirit" and fall down or react as if possessed by the Holy Spirit. This very effectively increases the intensity in the room. At this point, hypnosis and conversion tactics are being mixed. And the result is the audience's attention span is now totally focused upon the communication while the environment becomes more exciting or tense.
Assured Continuation: Fleecing the Flock
Right about this time, when an eyes-open mass-induced alpha mental state has been achieved, they will usually pass the collection plate or basket. In the background, a 45-beat-per-minute voice roll from the assistant preacher might exhort, "Give to God...Give to God...Give to God...." And the audience does give. God may not get the money, but his already-wealthy representative will.
Bonding by Fear and Suggestion
Next, the fire-and-brimstone preacher will come out. He induces fear and increases the tension by talking about "the devil," "going to hell," or the forthcoming Armegeddon.
In the last such rally I attended, the preacher talked about the blood that would soon be running out of every faucet in the land. He was also obsessed with a "bloody axe of God," which everyone had seen hanging above the pulpit the previous week. I have no doubt that everyone saw it--the power of suggestion given to hundreds of people in hypnosis assures that at least 10 to 25 percent would see whatever he suggested they see.
Testimony: Creating Community Spirit
In most revivalist gatherings, "testifying" or "witnessing" usually follows the fear-based sermon. People from the audience come up on stage and relate their stories. "I was crippled and now I can walk!" "I had arthritis and now it's gone!" It is a psychological manipulation that works. After listening to numerous case histories of miraculous healings, the average guy in the audience with a minor problem is sure he can be healed. The room is charged with fear, guilt, intense excitement, and expectations.
Miracles
Now those who want to be healed are frequently lined up around the edge of the room, or they are told to come down to the front. The preacher might touch them on the head firmly and scream, "Be healed!" This releases the psychic energy and, for many, catharsis results. Catharsis is a purging of repressed emotions. Individuals might cry, fall down or even go into spasms. And if catharsis is effected, they stand a chance of being healed. In catharsis (one of the three brain phases mentioned earlier), the brain-slate is temporarily wiped clean and the new suggestion is accepted.
For some, the healing may be permanent. For many, it will last four days to a week, which is, incidentally, how long a hypnotic suggestion given to a somnambulistic subject will usually last. Even if the healing doesn't last, if they come back every week, the power of suggestion may continually override the problem...or sometimes, sadly, it can mask a physical problem which could prove to be very detrimental to the individual in the long run.
The Grey Area of Legitimacy
I'm not saying that legitimate healings do not take place. They do. Maybe the individual was ready to let go of the negativity that caused the problem in the first place; maybe it was the work of God. Yet I contend that it can be explained with existing knowledge of brain/mind function.
A Game in Which the Rules Keep Changing
The techniques and staging will vary from church to church. Many use "speaking in tongues" to generate catharsis in some while the spectacle creates intense excitement in the observers.
The use of hypnotic techniques by religions is sophisticated, and professionals are assuring that they become even more effective. A man in Los Angeles is designing, building, and reworking a lot of churches around the country. He tells ministers what they need and how to use it. This man's track record indicates that the congregation and the monetary income will double if the minister follows his instructions. He admits that about 80 percent of his efforts are in the sound system and lighting.
Powerful sound and the proper use of lighting are of primary importance in inducing an altered state of consciousnes--I've been using them for years in my own seminars. However, my participants are fully aware of the process and what they can expect as a result of their participation.
Six Conversion Techniques
Cults and human-potential organizations are always looking for new converts. To attain them, they must also create a brain-phase. And they often need to do it within a short space of time--a weekend, or maybe even a day. The following are the six primary techniques used to generate the conversion.
Isolation Intimidation, Deprivation and Indoctrination
The meeting or training takes place in an area where participants are cut off from the outside world. This may be any place: a private home, a remote or rural setting, or even a hotel ballroom where the participants are allowed only limited bathroom usage. In human-potential trainings, the controllers will give a lengthy talk about the importance of "keeping agreements" in life. The participants are told that if they don't keep agreements, their life will never work. It's a good idea to keep agreements, but the controllers are subverting a positive human value for selfish purposes. The participants vow to themselves and their trainer that they will keep their agreements. Anyone who does not will be intimidated into agreement or forced to leave. The next step is to agree to complete training, thus assuring a high percentage of conversions for the organizations.
They will usually have to agree not to take drugs, smoke, and sometimes not to eat...or they are given such short meal breaks that it creates tension. The real reason for the agreements is to alter internal chemistry, which generates anxiety and hopefully causes at least a slight malfunction of the nervous system, which in turn increases the conversion potential.
The "Sell It By Zealot" Technique.
Before the gathering is complete, the agreements will be used to ensure that the new converts go out and find new participants. They are intimidated into agreeing to do so before they leave. Since the importance of keeping agreements is so high on their priority list, the converts will twist the arms of everyone they know, attempting to talk them into attending a free introductory session offered at a future date by the organization. The new converts are zealots. In fact, the inside term for merchandising the largest and most successful human-potential training is, "sell it by zealot!"
At least a million people are graduates and a good percentage have been left with a mental activation button that assures their future loyalty and assistance if the guru figure or organization calls. Think about the potential political implications of hundreds of thousands of zealots programmed to campaign for their guru.
Be wary of an organization of this type that offers follow-up sessions after the seminar. Follow-up sessions might be weekly meetings or inexpensive seminars given on a regular basis which the organization will attempt to talk you into taking--or any regularly scheduled event used to maintain control. As the early Christian revivalists found, long-term control is dependent upon a good follow-up system.
Wearing Down Resistance
Alright. Now, let's look at the second tip-off that indicates conversion tactics are being used. A schedule is maintained that causes physical and mental fatigue. This is primarily accomplished by long hours in which the participants are given no opportunity for relaxation or reflection.
Increasing Tension
The third tip-off: techniques used to increase the tension in the room or environment.
Introducing Uncertainty About Identity
Number four: Uncertainty. I could spend hours relating various techniques to increase tension and generate uncertainty. Basically, the participants are concerned about being "put on the spot" or encountered by the trainers, guilt feelings are played upon, participants are tempted to verbally relate their innermost secrets to the other participants or forced to take part in activities that emphasize removing their masks. One of the most successful human-potential seminars forces the participants to stand on a stage in front of the entire audience while being verbally attacked by the trainers. A public opinion poll, conducted a few years ago, showed that the number one most-fearful situation an individual could encounter is to speak to an audience. It ranked above window washing outside the 85th floor of an office building.
So you can imagine the fear and tension this situation generates within the participants. Many faint, but most cope with the stress by mentally going away. They literally go into an alpha state, which automatically makes them many times as suggestible as they normally are. And another loop of the downward spiral into conversion is successfully effected.
Jargon
The fifth clue that conversion tactics are being used is the introduction of jargon--new terms that have meaning only to the "insiders" who participate. Vicious language is also frequently used, purposely, to make participants uncomfortable.
Lack of Humor: No Release, No Resistance
The final tip-off is that there is no humor in the communications...at least until the participants are converted. Then, merry-making and humor are highly desirable as symbols of the new joy the participants have supposedly "found."
Not Always a Bad Thing
I'm not saying that good does not result from participation in such gatherings. It can and does. But I contend it is important for people to know what has happened and to be aware that continual involvement may not be in their best interest.
Over the years, I've conducted professional seminars to teach people to be hypnotists, trainers, and counselors. I've had many of those who conduct trainings and rallies come to me and say, "I'm here because I know that what I'm doing works, but I don't know why." After showing them how and why, many have gotten out of the business or have decided to approach it differently or in a much more loving and supportive manner.
Many of these trainers have become personal friends, and it scares us all to have experienced the power of one person with a microphone and a room full of people. Add a little charisma and you can count on a high percentage of conversions. The sad truth is that a high percentage of people want to give away their power--they are true "believers"!
Cults: A Captive Course in Stockholm Syndrome
Cult gatherings or human-potential trainings are an ideal environment to observe first-hand what is technically called the "Stockholm Syndrome." This is a situation in which those who are intimidated, controlled, or made to suffer, begin to love, admire, and even sometimes sexually desire their controllers or captors.
But let me inject a word of warning here: If you think you can attend such gatherings and not be affected, you are probably wrong. A perfect example is the case of a woman who went to Haiti on a Guggenheim Fellowship to study Haitian Voodoo. In her report, she related how the music eventually induced uncontrollable bodily movement and an altered state of consciousness. Although she understood the process and thought herself above it, when she began to feel herself become vulnerable to the music, she attempted to fight it and turned away. Anger or resistance almost always assures conversion. A few moments later she was possessed by the music and began dancing in a trance around the Voodoo meeting house. A brain phase had been induced by the music and excitement, and she awoke feeling reborn.
The Only Hope of Immunity
The only hope of attending such gatherings without being affected is to be a Buddha and allow no positive or negative emotions to surface. Few people are capable of such detachment.
The US Marines as a Brainwashing Cult
Before I go on, let's go back to the six tip-offs to conversion. I want to mention the United States Government and military boot camp. The Marine Corps talks about breaking men down before "rebuilding" them as new men--as marines! Well, that is exactly what they do, the same way a cult breaks its people down and rebuilds them as happy flower sellers on your local street corner. Every one of the six conversion techniques are used in boot camp. Considering the needs of the military, I'm not making a judgement as to whether that is good or bad. IT IS A fact that the men are effectively brainwashed. Those who won't submit must be discharged or spend much of their time in the brig.
Steps in the Decognition Process
Once the initial conversion is effected, cults, armed services, and similar groups cannot have cynicism among their members. Members must respond to commands and do as they are told, otherwise they are dangerous to the organizational control. This is normally accomplished as a three-step Decognition Process.
Alertness reduction
Step One is alertness reduction: The controllers cause the nervous system to malfunction, making it difficult to distinguish between fantasy and reality. This can be accomplished in several ways. poor diet is one; watch out for Brownies and Koolaid. The sugar throws the nervous system off. More subtle is the "spiritual diet" used by many cults. They eat only vegetables and fruits; without the grounding of grains, nuts, seeds, dairy products, fish or meat, an individual becomes mentally "spacey." Inadequate sleep is another primary way to reduce alertness, especially when combined with long hours of work or intense physical activity. Also, being bombarded with intense and unique experiences achieves the same result.
Programmed Confusion
Step Two is programmed confusion: You are mentally assaulted while your alertness is being reduced as in Step One. This is accomplished with a deluge of new information, lectures, discussion groups, encounters or one-to-one processing, which usually amounts to the controller bombarding the individual with questions. During this phase of decognition, reality and illusion often merge and perverted logic is likely to be accepted.
Thought Stopping
Step Three is thought stopping: Techniques are used to cause the mind to go "flat." These are altered-state-of-consciousness techniques that initially induce calmness by giving the mind something simple to deal with and focusing awareness. The continued use brings on a feeling of elation and eventually hallucination. The result is the reduction of thought and eventually, if used long enough, the cessation of all thought and withdrawal from everyone and everything except that which the controllers direct. The takeover is then complete. It is important to be aware that when members or participants are instructed to use "thought-stopping" techniques, they are told that they will benefit by so doing: they will become "better soldiers" or "find enlightenment."
Thought-Stopping Techniques
Marching
There are three primary techniques used for thought stopping. The first is marching: the thump, thump, thump beat literally generates self-hypnosis and thus great susceptibility to suggestion.
Meditation
The second thought stopping technique is meditation. If you spend an hour to an hour and a half a day in meditation, after a few weeks, there is a great probability that you will not return to full beta consciousness. You will remain in a fixed state of alpha for as long as you continue to meditate. I'm not saying this is bad--if you do it yourself. It may be very beneficial. But it is a fact that you are causing your mind to go flat. I've worked with meditators on an EEG machine and the results are conclusive: the more you meditate, the flatter your mind becomes until, eventually and especially if used to excess or in combination with decognition, all thought ceases. Some spiritual groups see this as nirvana--which is bullshit. It is simply a predictable physiological result. And if heaven on earth is non-thinking and non-involvement, I really question why we are here.
Chanting
The third thought-stopping technique is chanting, and often chanting in meditation. "Speaking in tongues" could also be included in this category.
All three-stopping techniques produce an altered state of consciousness. This may be very good if you are controlling the process, for you also control the input. I personally use at least one self-hypnosis programming session every day and I know how beneficial it is for me. But you need to know if you use these techniques to the degree of remaining continually in alpha that, although you'll be very mellow, you'll also be more suggestible.
True Believers and Mass Movements
Before ending this section on conversion, I want to talk about the people who are most susceptible to it and about Mass Movements. I am convinced that at least a third of the population is what Eric Hoffer calls "true believers." They are joiners and followers...people who want to give away their power. They look for answers, meaning, and enlightenment outside themselves.
Hoffer, who wrote "The True Believer", a classic on mass movements, says, "true believers are not intent on bolstering and advancing a cherished self, but are those craving to be rid of unwanted self. They are followers, not because of a desire for self-advancement, but because it can satisfy their passion for self-renunciation!" Hoffer also says that true believers "are eternally incomplete and eternally insecure"!
I know this from my own experience. In my years of communicating concepts and conducting trainings, I have run into them again and again. All I can do is attempt to show them that the only thing to seek is the True Self within. Their personal answers are to be found there and there alone. I communicate that the basics of spirituality are self-responsibility and self-actualization. But most of the true believers just tell me that I'm not spiritual and go looking for someone who will give them the dogma and structure they desire.
Never underestimate the potential danger of these people. They can easily be molded into fanatics who will gladly work and die for their holy cause. It is a substitute for their lost faith in themselves and offers them as a substitute for individual hope. The Moral Majority is made up of true believers. All cults are composed of true believers. You'll find them in politics, churches, businesses, and social cause groups. They are the fanatics in these organizations.
Mass Movements will usually have a charismatic leader. The followers want to convert others to their way of living or impose a new way of life--if necessary, by legislating laws forcing others to their view, as evidenced by the activities of the Moral Majority. This means enforcement by guns or punishment, for that is the bottomline in law enforcement.
A common hatred, enemy, or devil is essential to the success of a mass movement. The Born-Again Christians have Satan himself, but that isn't enough--they've added the occult, the New Age thinkers and, lately, all those who oppose their integration of church and politics, as evidenced in their political reelection campaigns against those who oppose their views. In revolutions, the devil is usually the ruling power or aristocracy. Some human-potential movements are far too clever to ask their graduates to join anything, thus labeling themselves as a cult--but, if you look closely, you'll find that their devil is anyone and everyone who hasn't taken their training.
There are mass movements without devils but they seldom attain major status. The True Believers are mentally unbalanced or insecure people, or those without hope or friends. People don't look for allies when they love, but they do when they hate or become obsessed with a cause. And those who desire a new life and a new order feel the old ways must be eliminated before the new order can be built.
Persuasion Techniques
Persuasion isn't technically brainwashing but it is the manipulation of the human mind by another individual, without the manipulated party being aware what caused his opinion shift. I only have time to very basically introduce you to a few of the thousands of techniques in use today, but the basis of persuasion is always to access your right brain. The left half of your brain is analytical and rational. The right side is creative and imaginative. That is overly simplified but it makes my point. So, the idea is to distract the left brain and keep it busy. Ideally, the persuader generates an eyes-open altered state of consciousness, causing you to shift from beta awareness into alpha; this can be measured on an EEG machine.
"Yes Set"
First, let me give you an example of distracting the left brain. Politicians use these powerful techniques all the time; lawyers use many variations which, I've been told, they call "tightening the noose."
Assume for a moment that you are watching a politician give a speech. First, he might generate what is called a "yes set." These are statements that will cause listeners to agree; they might even unknowingly nod their heads in agreement. Next come the truisms. These are usually facts that could be debated but, once the politician has his audience agreeing, the odds are in the politician's favor that the audience won't stop to think for themselves, thus continuing to agree. Last comes the suggestion. This is what the politician wants you to do and, since you have been agreeing all along, you could be persuaded to accept the suggestion. Now, if you'll listen closely to my political speech, you'll find that the first three are the "yes set," the next three are truisms and the last is the suggestion.
"Ladies and gentlemen: are you angry about high food prices? Are you tired of astronomical gas prices? Are you sick of out-of-control inflation? Well, you know the Other Party allowed 18 percent inflation last year; you know crime has increased 50 percent nationwide in the last 12 months, and you know your paycheck hardly covers your expenses any more. Well, the answer to resolving these problems is to elect me, John Jones, to the U.S. Senate."
Embedded Commands
And I think you've heard all that before. But you might also watch for what are called embedded commands. As an example: On key words, the speaker would make a gesture with his left hand, which research has shown is more apt to access your right brain. Today's media-oriented politicians and spellbinders are often carefully trained by a whole new breed of specialist who are using every trick in the book--both old and new--to manipulate you into accepting their candidate.
The Power of NLP
The concepts and techniques of Neuro-Linguistics are so heavily protected that I found out the hard way that to even talk about them publicly or in print results in threatened legal action. Yet Neuro-Linguistic training is readily available to anyone willing to devote the time and pay the price. It is some of the most subtle and powerful manipulation I have yet been exposed to. A good friend who recently attended a two-week seminar on Neuro-Linguistics found that many of those she talked to during the breaks were government people.
Interspersal Technique
Another technique that I'm just learning about is unbelievably slippery; it is called an interspersal technique and the idea is to say one thing with words but plant a subconscious impression of something else in the minds of the listeners and/or watchers.
Practical Examples
Let me give you an example: Assume you are watching a television commentator make the following statement: Senator Johnson is assisting local authorities to clear up the stupid mistakes of companies contributing to the nuclear waste problems." It sounds like a statement of fact, but, if the speaker emphasizes the right word, and especially if he makes the proper hand gestures on the key words, you could be left with the subconscious impression that Senator Johnson is stupid. That was the subliminal goal of the statement and the speaker cannot be called to account for anything.
Persuasion techniques are also frequently used on a much smaller scale with just as much effectiveness. The insurance salesman knows his pitch is likely to be much more effective if he can get you to visualize something in your mind. This is right-brain communication. For instance, he might pause in his conversation, look slowly around your livingroom and say, "Can you just imagine this beautiful home burning to the ground?" Of course you can! It is one of your unconscious fears and, when he forces you to visualize it, you are more likely to be manipulated into signing his insurance policy.
Shock and Confusion
The Hare Krishnas, operating in every airport, use what I call shock and confusion techniques to distract the left brain and communicate directly with the right brain. While waiting for a plane, I once watched one operate for over an hour. He had a technique of almost jumping in front of someone. Initially, his voice was loud then dropped as he made his pitch to take a book and contribute money to the cause. Usually, when people are shocked, they immediately withdraw. In this case they were shocked by the strange appearance, sudden materialization and loud voice of the Hare Krishna devotee. In other words, the people went into an alpha state for security because they didn't want to confront the reality before them.
In alpha, they were highly suggestible so they responded to the suggestion of taking the book; the moment they took the book, they felt guilty and responded to the second suggestion: give money. We are all conditioned that if someone gives us something, we have to give them something in return--in that case, it was money. While watching this hustler, I was close enough to notice that many of the people he stopped exhibited an outward sign of alpha--their eyes were actually dilated.
Subliminal Programming
Subliminals are hidden suggestions that only your subconscious perceives. They can be audio, hidden behind music, or visual, airbrushed into a picture, flashed on a screen so fast that you don't consciously see them, or cleverly incorporated into a picture or design.
Most audio subliminal reprogramming tapes offer verbal suggestions recorded at a low volume. I question the efficacy of this technique--if subliminals are not perceptible, they cannot be effective, and subliminals recorded below the audible threshold are therefore useless. The oldest audio subliminal technique uses a voice that follows the volume of the music so subliminals are impossible to detect without a parametric equalizer. But this technique is patented and, when I wanted to develop my own line of subliminal audiocassettes, negotiations with the patent holder proved to be unsatisfactory.
My attorney obtained copies of the patents which I gave to some talented Hollywood sound engineers, asking them to create a new technique. They found a way to psycho-acoustically modify and synthesize the suggestions so that they are projected in the same chord and frequency as the music, thus giving them the effect of being part of the music. But we found that in using this technique, there is no way to reduce various frequencies to detect the subliminals. In other words, although the suggestions are being heard by the subconscious mind, they cannot be monitored with even the most sophisticated equipment.
If we were able to come up with this technique as easily as we did, I can only imagine how sophisticated the technology has become, with unlimited government or advertising funding. And I shudder to think about the propaganda and commercial manipulation that we are exposed to on a daily basis. There is simply no way to know what is behind the music you hear. It may even be possible to hide a second voice behind the voice to which you are listening.
The series by Wilson Bryan Key, Ph.D., on subliminals in advertising and political campaigns well documents the misuse in many areas, especially printed advertising in newspapers, magazines, and posters.
The big question about subliminals is: do they work? And I guarantee you they do. Not only from the response of those who have used my tapes, but from the results of such programs as the subliminals behind the music in department stores. Supposedly, the only message is instructions to not steal: one East Coast department store chain reported a 37 percent reduction in thefts in the first nine months of testing.
A 1984 article in the technical newsletter, "Brain-Mind Bulletin," states that as much as 99 percent of our cognitive activity may be "non-conscious," according to the director of the Laboratory for Cognitive Psychophysiology at the University of Illinois. The lengthy report ends with the statement, "these findings support the use of subliminal approaches such as taped suggestions for weight loss and the therapeutic use of hypnosis and Neuro-Linguistic Programming."
Mass Misuse of Subliminal Programming
I could relate many stories that support subliminal programming, but I'd rather use my time to make you aware of even more subtle uses of such programming.
I have personally experienced sitting in a Los Angeles auditorium with over ten thousand people who were gathered to listen to a current charismatic figure. Twenty minutes after entering the auditorium, I became aware that I was going in and out of an altered state. Those accompanying me experienced the same thing. Since it is our business, we were aware of what was happening, but those around us were not. By careful observation, what appeared to be spontaneous demonstrations were, in fact, artful manipulations. The only way I could figure that the eyes-open trance had been induced was that a 6- to 7-cycle-per-second vibration was being piped into the room behind the air conditioner sound. That particular vibration generates alpha, which would render the audience highly susceptible. Ten to 25 percent of the population is capable of a somnambulistic level of altered states of consciousness; for these people, the suggestions of the speaker, if non-threatening, could potentially be accepted as "commands."
Vibrato
This leads to the mention of vibrato. Vibrato is the tremulous effect imparted in some vocal or instrumental music, and the cyle-per-second range causes people to go into an altered state of consciousness. At one period of English history, singers whose voices contained pronounced vibrato were not allowed to perform publicly because listeners would go into an altered state and have fantasies, often sexual in nature.
People who attend opera or enjoy listening to singers like Mario Lanza are familiar with this altered state induced by the performers.
Extra-low Frequency Vibrations (ELFs)
Now, let's carry this awareness a little farther. There are also inaudible ELFs (extra-low frequency waves). These are electromagnetic in nature. One of the primary uses of ELFs is to communicate with our submarines. Dr. Andrija Puharich, a highly respected researcher, in an attempt to warn U.S. officials about Russian use of ELFs, set up an experiment. Volunteers were wired so their brain waves could be measured on an EEG. They were sealed in a metal room that could not be penetrated by a normal signal.
Puharich then beamed ELF waves at the volunteers. ELFs go right through the earth and, of course, right through metal walls. Those inside couldn't know if the signal was or was not being sent. And Puharich watched the reactions on the technical equipment: 30 percent of those inside the room were taken over by the ELF signal in six to ten seconds.
When I say "taken over," I mean that their behavior followed the changes anticipated at very precise frequencies. Waves below 6 cycles per second caused the subjects to become very emotionally upset, and even disrupted bodily functions. At 8.2 cycles, they felt very high...an elevated feeling, as though they had been in masterful meditation, learned over a period of years. Eleven to 11.3 cycles induced waves of depressed agitation leading to riotous behavior.
The Neurophone
Dr. Patrick Flanagan is a personal friend of mine. In the early 1960s, as a teenager, Pat was listed as one of the top scientists in the world by "Life" magazine. Among his many inventions was a device he called the Neurophone--an electronic instrument that can successfully programm suggestions directly through contact with the skin. When he attempted to patent the device, the government demanded that he prove it worked. When he did, the National Security Agency confiscated the neurophone. It took Pat two years of legal battle to get his invention back.
In using the device, you don't hear or see a thing; it is applied to the skin, which Pat claims is the source of special senses. The skin contains more sensors for heat, touch, pain, vibration, and electrical fields than any other part of the human anatomy.
In one of his recent tests, Pat conducted two identical seminars for a military audience--one seminar one night and one the next night, because the size of the room was not large enough to accommodate all of them at one time. When the first group proved to be very cool and unwilling to respond, Patrick spent the next day making a special tape to play at the second seminar. The tape instructed the audience to be extremely warm and responsive and for their hands to become "tingly." The tape was played through the neurophone, which was connected to a wire he placed along the ceiling of the room. There were no speakers, so no sound could be heard, yet the message was successfully transmitted from that wire directly into the brains of the audience. They were warm and receptive, their hands tingled and they responded, according to programming, in other ways that I cannot mention here.
Technological Tools for Mass Manipulation
The more we find out about how human beings work through today's highly advanced technological research, the more we learn to control human beings. And what probably scares me the most is that the medium for takeover is already in place. The television set in your livingroom and bedroom is doing a lot more than just entertaining you.
Before I continue, let me point out something else about an altered state of consciousness. When you go into an altered state, you transfer into right brain, which results in the internal release of the body's own opiates: enkephalins and Beta-endorphins, chemically almost identical to opium. In other words, it feels good...and you want to come back for more.
Recent tests by researcher Herbert Krugman showed that, while viewers were watching TV, right-brain activity outnumbered left-brain activity by a ratio of two to one. Put more simply, the viewers were in an altered state...in trance more often than not. They were getting their Beta-endorphin "fix."
To measure attention spans, psychophysiologist Thomas Mulholland of the Veterans Hospital in Bedford, Massachusetts, attached young viewers to an EEG machine that was wired to shut the TV set off whenever the children's brains produced a majority of alpha waves. Although the children were told to concentrate, only a few could keep the set on for more than 30 seconds!
Most viewers are already hypnotized. To deepen the trance is easy. One simple way is to place a blank, black frame every 32 frames in the film that is being projected. This creates a 45-beat-per-minute pulsation perceived only by the subconscious mind--the ideal pace to generate deep hypnosis.
The commercials or suggestions presented following this alpha-inducing broadcast are much more likely to be accepted by the viewer. The high percentage of the viewing audience that has somnambulistic-depth ability could very well accept the suggestions as commands--as long as those commands did not ask the viewer to do something contrary to his morals, religion, or self-preservation.
The medium for takeover is here. By the age of 16, children have spent 10,000 to 15,000 hours watching television--that is more time than they spend n school! In the average home, the TV set is on for six hours and 44 minutes per day--an increase of nine minutes from last year and three times the average rate of increase during the 1970s.
It obviously isn't getting better...we are rapidly moving into an alpha-level world--very possibly the Orwellian world of "1984"--placid, glassy-eyed, and responding obediently to instructions.
A research project by Jacob Jacoby, a Purdue University psychologist, found that of 2,700 people tested, 90 percent misunderstood even such simple viewing fare as commercials and "Barnaby Jones." Only minutes after watching, the typical viewer missed 23 to 36 percent of the questions about what he or she had seen. Of course they did--they were going in and out of trance! If you go into a deep trance, you must be instructed to remember--otherwise you automatically forget.
In Closing...
I have just touched the tip of the iceberg. When you start to combine subliminal messages behind the music, subliminal visuals projected on the screen, hypnotically produced visual effects, sustained musical beats at a trance-inducing pace . . . you have extremely effective brainwashing. Every hour that you spend watching the TV set you become more conditioned. And, in case you thought there was a law against any of these things, guess again. There isn't! There are a lot of powerful people who obviously prefer things exactly the way they are. Maybe they have plans for...?

Chertoff Can Keep His Promise – But Will He?

Lou Dobbs Tonight -- CNN -- June 23

Lisa Sylvester: The Department of Homeland Security plans to build 670 miles of vehicle barriers and fencing by the end of [this] year. The national security fence is designed to keep drug runners, human smugglers and illegal aliens out. To meet the deadline, the agency has had to waive environmental and other regulations as allowed under Congressional law. But environmentalists complained and filed a lawsuit, noting that endangered jaguars could be affected by the fence construction...
Now the U.S. Supreme Court has refused to intervene in the dispute, effectively giving the Department of Homeland Security the green light to proceed. DHS responded saying, quote, "we're obviously pleased that the Supreme Court has let the lower court's ruling stand. The American people expect this department to enforce the rule of law at the border."
Rep. John Culberson (R-TX): For the public safety and priority of protecting this nation comes first before the rights of animals. And the fence will be built under law. It has to be built and now we know from the Supreme Court it will be built on time.
Dobbs: ...Well, so far about half of that, 700 miles of fence mandated by the Border Fence Act of 2006 has been built, 150 miles of vehicle fencing, 182 miles of pedestrian fencing we're told is completed. The Department of Homeland Security expecting to finish another 340 miles by the end of this year...

THINGS TO MAKE AND DO.pdf
MAKE A JOULE THIEF
In the November 1999 issue of EPE (Everyday Practical Electronics), a small and
intriguing circuit was published in the Ingenuity Unlimited section by Z.
Kaparnik. It was a very small implementation of a typical transformer feedback
single transistor invertor. The transformer was a standard ferrite bead with two
windings wound on it and the circuit was using the high voltage pulse generated
when the transistor turns off to light an LED from a single 1.5V battery.
This page has two variations on the original design to use the simple circuit in a
useful manner.
Here's the Joule thief. It's like an open PCB torch that will take either an AA or
AAA battery in the holder and use whatever power is left in the battery to light a
white LED.
The amazing thing about this circuit is that it will run right down to about 0.35V
if left running continuously, and will often provide a week of continuous low
level light from a battery that would normally be considered dead.
The level of light is initially quite high but gradually reduces as the battery
voltage goes lower. However, it can still be used for reading in a dark room, even
when the battery is almost completely drained.
Make a Joule thief.

Forecast: Clear and Sunny More efficient solar, collectors made

In the late seventies, when President Jimmy Carter installed solar
panels on theWhite House, the solar industry was aglow. what,
they pondered, could more clearly signal the nation's enthusiasm
and support for this promising energy technology?

It was a time when oil prices were spiraling. Drivers waited hours in gas lines, while the nation
agonized over energy policy and its dependence on foreign oil. Clean, inexhaustible solar power
was a bright spot on the energy horizon.
But dawn came slowly for solar enthusiasts. As oil prices fell, so did interest in energy
alternatives. Citizens blinked at solar's technical hurdles, and cuts in federal funding clouded the
future.
Fortunately, not everyone abandoned hope. Dozens of manufacturers kept working. And when
federal funding for solar-related research recently jumped 30 percent, spurred by erratic oil
supplies and resurging environmentalism, a small but responsive solar industry was ready.
"As early as 1980, we were planning some rather dramatic improvements in the efficiency of our
collector cells," says Prem Nath, director of development for United Solar Systems Corp.
(USSC), a joint venture between Canon Inc. of Japan and Energy Conversion Devices of Troy,
Michigan. USSC is a leading producer of photovoltaic cells - devices that convert sunlight
directly into electricity.
According to Nath, solar equipment marketers agree on the industry's key mission: "We've got to
improve our power-generating efficiency," he asserts. "If we work harder, solar could rival coal,
gas, uranium and even imported oil as a leading source of utility-scale power - and do it by the

There was a lot of decent art. This produced a feeling of uneasiness. I kept having the urge
to exclaim what David Bowie as Andy Warhol said in Basquiat, “I can’t even see what’s good
anymore!” This happens with all fairs. But what doesn’t happen with all fairs, at least the
major front-runners, is a placid safety. Nothing in Artropolis shocked, stunned, took a risk,
failed spectacularly or remotely dared.

A lot of stuff sucked, but as crammed fairs have the tendency to do, bad stuff was elevated
to decent, and good stuff was lowered to decent. Part of what caused this were all the second
market dealers. Galleries you’ve never heard of selling famous art that is old do not inspire
notions of contemporanity in visitors. While Tom Wesselman is technically contemporary in that
he’s from the 60’s, his work is in no way close to be current or new. To be vital, fairs have to
have a lot of spaces showing current and new work. This isn’t a rule, it is just a condition and
trend that has arisen. No one started sassing off that art fairs are the new biennials because of
minor Lichtensteins changing hands.

There is of course value to having second market galleries at a show. How often do you see a
random Cornell box for the brief period it leaves one collection and enters another?

Seaweed provides clues to earliest
 inhabitants of Americas

By RANDOLPH E. SCHMID, AP Science WriterThu May 8, 4:11 PM ET

Remains of meals that included seaweed are helping confirm the date of a settlement in southern Chile
that may offer the earliest evidence of humans in the Americas.

Researchers date the seaweed found at Monte Verde to more than 14,000 years ago, 1,000 years earlier
than the well-studied Clovis culture.

And the report comes just a month after other scientists announced they had found coprolites — fossilized
human feces — dating to about 14,000 years ago in a cave in Oregon.
Taken together, the finds move
back evidence of people in the Americas by a millennium or more, with settlements in northern and
southern coastal areas.

The prevailing theory has been that people followed herds of migrating animals across an ancient land
bridge between Siberia and Alaska, and then moved southward along the West coast. Proof has been hard
to come by, however. The sea was about 200 feet lower at the time and as it rose it would have inundated
the remains of coastal settlements.

A team led by anthropologist Tom Dillehay of Vanderbilt University reports on the new seaweed study from
Monte Verde, Chile, in Friday's edition of the journal Science.

There is a continuous mountain chain along the western side of the Americas, Dillehay explained in a
briefing, with thousands of rivers and streams flowing down the mountains to the ocean.
This would have encouraged north-to-south migration, he explained, with some groups choosing
to turn and follow rivers inland.Places like the Paisley Caves in Oregon and Monte Verde in Chile are
ideal locations for such settlement,he said."We really don't know," he added, but genetic and linguistic
evidence is beginning to build a fairly strong case that movement was primarily along the coast, he said.

"I tend to think that, even if they came down the coastline, it is a slow process," Dillehay said.
"We're just not finding all of the archaeological sites, yet."
Nine species of seaweed and marine algae were recovered from hearths in the ancient settlement, about
500 miles south of Santiago and about 10 miles inland.

Between 20 and 30 people appear to have lived at the site. Other food remains found there include
vegetables, nuts, shellfish, an extinct species of llama and an elephant-like animal called a gomphothere.
Some of the seaweed had been chewed, including two types still used by local natives for medical
purposes. Other examples were burned, indicating cooking.

Beach stones and other materials were also found at the inland site, Dillehay said, indicating the people
at Monte Verde had a stronger coastal tradition than was previously known.
Dillehay said Monte Verde was originally studied several decades ago, but the seaweed remains
were only just discovered in a new analysis of recovered materials.
The materials in Oregon and Chile were radiocarbon dated at 12,500 years ago which, Dillehay said,
translates to between 14,200 and 14,500 calendar years ago.
The research was funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation, Chile's National Fund for Scientific
and Technological Development, the National Geographic Society and the University of Chile.

Ancient seaweed chews confirm age of Chilean site

By Maggie Fox, Health and Science EditorThu May 8, 2:34 PM ET
Bits of chewed-up or burned seaweed discarded more than 14,000 years ago confirm that people
were in Chile at least that long ago and shed light on what their culture was like, researchers reported
 on
Thursday.

The findings at a site 10,000 miles from the Bering Strait add to an almost overwhelming pile of evidence
that people were well distributed across the western Americas long before the so-called Clovis culture
13,000 years ago.

And the seaweed picked up at the Monte Verde site provide a direct link to people living in the area
today, some of whom also use some of the seaweed species medicinally.

"What we have found ... are nine species of seaweed that are coming from rocky and sandy beaches
located about 55 kilometers (35 miles) west of the site," said archeologist Tom Dillehay of Vanderbilt
University in Nashville, Tennessee, who led the study.

"It indicates to us that the people of Monte Verde had a much stronger coastal industry than we thought
previously. It indicates to us that we might be talking about people who initially entered into the Monte
Verde site from the Pacific coastline itself," he told reporters in a telephone briefing.

The Monte Verde site 500 miles south of Santiago has long been controversial. Discovered in 1977, its
contents have been carbon-dated to more than 12,000 years ago -- dates that careful calibration using
tree rings and other information suggest are actually more than 14,000 years old.

CONTRADICTING CONVENTIONAL WISDOM

This clashes with the one-time conventional wisdom that humans first crossed from Siberia using a land

bridge over the Bering Strait about 13,000 years ago and then spread over the American continents.
But it supports newer genetic, linguistic and physical evidence that suggest this migration took place
earlier, at least 16,000 years ago.

And it shows the upper layer of the site was occupied more than 1,000 years earlier than any other
reliably dated human settlements in the Americas.

Dillehay believes it supports his theory that early Americans moved slowly down the Pacific coast, learning
about the local flora, fauna and other resources as they explored. They would have moved inland a bit as
they encountered raging, turbulent rivers full of glacial snowmelt.

Older theories have focused on a human blitzkrieg, in which fast-moving groups spread over the continent
quickly as they tracked and wiped out herds of big game.

Some of the seaweed had been pressed into cakes and chewed as quids, like tobacco is sometimes today.

Others had clearly been cooked, Dillehay and colleagues said.

"All nine seaweed species recovered at Monte Verde II are excellent sources of iodine, iron, zinc,
protein, hormones, and a wide range of trace elements, particularly cobalt, copper, boron, and manganese,"
they wrote in their report, published in the journal Science.

At least two of the species are used medicinally by local indigenous people to treat chest and intestinal
ailments, Dillehay said.
He said it might be possible to take DNA from the chewed quids, but noted they
were highly likely to have been contaminated since they were collected.

Last month researchers reported they had analyzed DNA from 14,000-year-old human waste found
in a cave in Oregon.(Editing by Xavier Briand)

Overlooked in the global food crisis: A problem with dirt

By SETH BORENSTEIN, AP Science WriterThu May 8, 6:06 PM ET

Science has provided the souped-up seeds to feed the world, through biotechnology and old-fashioned
crossbreeding. Now the problem is the dirt they're planted in.

As seeds get better, much of the world's soil is getting worse and people are going hungry. Scientists say
if they can get the world out of the economically triggered global food crisis, better dirt will be at the
root of the solution.Soils around the world are deteriorating with about one-fifth of the world's cropland
considered degraded in some manner. The poor quality has cut production by about one-sixth, according
to a World Resources Institute study. Some scientists consider it a slow-motion disaster.

In sub-Saharan Africa, nearly 1 million square miles of cropland have shown a "consistent significant
decline,"according to a March 2008 report by a worldwide consortium of agricultural institutions.

The cause of the current global food crisis is mostly based on market forces, speculation and hoarding,
experts say. But beyond the economics lie droughts and floods, plant diseases and pests, and all too
often, poor soil.

A generation ago, through better types of plants, Earth's food production exploded in what was then
called the "green revolution." Some people thought the problem of feeding the world was solved and
moved on. However, developing these new "magic seeds" was the easy part. The crucial element,
fertile soil, was missing."The first thing to do is to have good soil," said Hans Herren, winner of the
World Food Prize.
"Even the best seeds can't do anything in sand and gravel."

Herren is co-chairman of the International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge, Science and Technology
for Development, a collection of scientists sponsored by the United Nations and World Bank. It produced a
2,500-page report last month which, among other recommendations, emphasized a need to improve the
world's soil.
Genetic improvements in corn make it possible to grow up to 9,000 pounds of corn per acre in Africa. But
millions of poor African farmers only get about 500 pounds an acre "because over the years, their soils
have
become very infertile and they can't afford to purchase fertilizers," said Roger Leakey, a co-author
of the international report and professor at James Cooke University in Australia.

Soil and water issues "have been taken for granted," said Ohio State University soil scientist Rattan Lal.
"It is a problem that is not going to be solved. It's going to get worse before it gets better."
In Africa, farmers are forced to use practices that rob nutrients from the soil, not put it back, said Herren,
who heads an Arlington, Va., nonprofit. Fertilizer is a quick, short-term fix, but even that isn't being
done,
he said.

The current crisis could have been avoided "if we, the world, had promoted fertilizer in Africa and
we have known for ages it works," said Pedro Sanchez, Columbia University tropical agricultural director.
In that way, the problem with soil is a prime example of a larger failing of agriculture science, said Sanchez,
who has won both the World Food Prize and a MacArthur genius grant. Scientists have the knowledge to feed
the world right now, but that is not happening, Sanchez said. "It's very frustrating, especially when you see
 children dying."

The fruits of biotechnology and the staples of modern agricultural scientific techniques include
irrigation, crop rotation, reduced tilling, use of fertilizer and improved seeds. It's a way of farming
differently
instead of just using better seeds that requires extra money up-front that many African
farmers don't have, scientists said.

Fixing soil just isn't "sexy" enough to interest governments or charities, said Robert Zeigler, director
general of the International Rice Research Institute in Manila, Philippines.

Zeigler's center last week planted its 133rd crop of rice in the same land since 1963, trying to pinpoint
the right combination of nitrogen and fertilizer. Better seeds worked wonders. But finding money for soil
health is difficult and because of that, less work is accomplished, he said.

But there are success stories, Sanchez said, pointing to the small African country of Malawi. Three years
ago,the country's new president invested 8 percent of Malawi's national budget in a subsidy program to get
fertilizer and better seeds to small farmers. Each farmer got two bags of fertilizer and 4 1/2 pounds of seeds
at less than half the cost.
Before the program started, one-third of Malawi was on food aid and the country wasn't growing enough
food for itself, Sanchez said. It was producing 1.2 million tons of maize in 2005. In 2006, Malawi had
more than doubled its production. By 2007 and 2008, the crop was up to 3.4 and 3.3 million tons. Now
 Malawi is exporting
corn."In two years, the country has changed from a food aid recipient to a food aid
 donor and is self-sufficient,"
Sanchez said. "if Malawi can do it, richer countries like Nigeria, Kenya can do it."

Christopher Columbus The Untold Story

Christopher Columbus Claiming the AmericasMany people are surprised to learn that Christopher Columbus and his
men enslaved native inhabitants of the West Indies, forced them to
convert to Christianity, and subdued them with violence in an effort
 to seek riches.
For readers who are skeptical or wish to learn more, this page contains
information that can be confirmed by consulting the sources cited.
After reading this page, please also see

Examining the Reputation of Columbus
.
In Pursuit of Profits.

On April 17, 1492, before his first voyage to the Americas,
Columbus negotiated a business contract with King Ferdinand
and Queen Isabella of Spain, entitling him to 10% of all profits.
In this contract, the Spanish sovereigns agreed:
"that of all and every kind of merchandise, whether pearls, precious stones, gold, silver, spices,
and other objects and merchandise whatsoever, of whatever kind, name and sort, which may
be bought, bartered, discovered, acquired and obtained within the limits of the said Admiralty,
Your Highnesses grant from now henceforth to the said Don Cristóbal [Christopher Columbus] ...
the tenth part of the whole, after deducting all the expenses which may be incurred therein."
[1]

After his fourth and final voyage to the Americas, Columbus summed up his feelings about gold
in a July 7, 1503, letter to Ferdinand and Isabella: "Gold is most excellent; gold is treasure, and
he who possesses it does all he wishes to in this world." [2]

After Turning Out the Jews Beyond profits, Columbus sought to convert native people to Catholicism.
In the prologue to his journal of the first voyage, Columbus wrote to Ferdinand and Isabella:

"YOUR HIGHNESSES, as Catholic Christians and Princes who love the holy Christian faith,
and the propagation of it, and who are enemies to the sect of Mahoma [Islam] and to all
idolatries and heresies, resolved to send me, Cristóbal Colon, to the said parts of India
to see the said princes ... with a view that they might be converted to our holy faith ....
Thus, after having turned out all the Jews from all your kingdoms and lordships ...
your Highnesses gave orders to me that with a sufficient fleet I should go to the said
parts of India .... I shall forget sleep, and shall work at the business of navigation, so
 that the service is performed."
[3]

The Enslavement of Native People On October 12, 1492
(the first day he encountered the native people of the Americas),
Columbus wrote in his journal: "They should be good servants ....
I, our Lord being pleased, will take hence, at the time of my departure,
six natives for your Highnesses." These captives were later paraded
through the streets of Barcelona and Seville when Columbus returned
to Spain.
[4]

From his very first contact with native people, Columbus had their domination in mind. For example,
on October 14, 1492, Columbus wrote in his journal, "with fifty men they can all be subjugated and
made to do what is required of them."
[5] These were not mere words: after his second voyage,
Columbus sent back a consignment of natives to be sold as slaves.
[6]

Yet in an April, 1493, letter to Luis de Santangel (a patron who helped fund the first voyage),
Columbus made clear that the people he encountered had done nothing to deserve ill treatment.
 According to Columbus:

"they are artless and generous with what they have, to such a degree as no one would believe
but him who had seen it. Of anything they have, if it be asked for, they never say no, but do
rather invite the person to accept it, and show as much lovingness as though they would give
their hearts."
[7]

Nonetheless, later in the letter Columbus went on to say:

"their Highnesses may see that I shall give them as much gold as they need .... and slaves
as many as they shall order to be shipped."
[8]

Pope Gives the Americas to Spain Following Columbus' discovery,
Pope Alexander VI issued a May 4, 1493, papal bull granting official
ownership of the New World to Ferdinand and Isabella. To these
monarchs, the Pope declared:

"We of our own motion, and not at your solicitation, do give, concede, and
assign for ever to you and your successors, all the islands, and main lands,
discovered; and which may hereafter, be discovered, towards the west and
south; whether they be situated towards India, or towards any
other part whatsoever, and give you absolute power in them."
[9]

This decree did not go unchallenged. Francis I of France, for example,
later quipped: "The sun shines on me as well as on others. I should
be very happy to see the clause in Adam's will which excluded me
from my share when the world was being divided."
[10]

Nonetheless, the Pope's declaration ultimately had dire consequences for
native inhabitants of the Americas. Beginning in 1514 Spanish conquerors
adopted "the Requirement," an ultimatum in which Indians were forced to
accept "the Church as the Ruler and Superior of the whole world" or face
persecution. If Indians did not immediately comply, the Requirement
warned them:

"We shall take you and your wives and your children, and shall make
slaves of them, and as such shall sell and dispose of them as their
Highnesses may command; and we shall take away your goods, and
shall do all the harm and damage that we can."
[11]

Often the Requirement was read to Indians without translation, or in some cases even from
ships before crew members landed to kill Indians and take slaves.
[12]

Columbus Day: A National Holiday Since 1971 Columbus Day has been
celebrated in the U.S. as federal holiday, and on October 9, 2002,
President George W. Bush issued a presidential proclamation celebrating
"Columbus' bold expedition [and] pioneering achievements,"
directing that "the flag of the United States be displayed on all public
buildings on the appointed day in honor of Christopher Columbus."
[13]

Missing from this proclamation was any mention of violence, slavery,
religious persecution, or the pursuit of gold. Yet Columbus himself was
more forthcoming about how he should be remembered. In a letter
penned a few years before his death, Columbus wrote: "I ought to
be judged as a captain who for such a long time up to this day has
borne arms without laying them aside for an hour."

Increasingly this is the solution of choice. A
Klargester BioDisc* Sewage Treatment Plant
fully treats the sewage. The treated effluent is
of such a high standard that it is odour free and
the Environment Agency - the regulator in
England & Wales (SEPA) in Scotland - may
permit discharge directly into a watercourse.
The treated effluent discharged from BioDisc*
will not cause blockage of the soakaway, if
one is required.
A correctly installed BioDisc* is robustly
constructed from corrosion-proof GRP and
will only require de-sludging every 12 months.
A BioDisc* sewage treatment plant is a more
adaptable solution than a septic tank, allowing
a more flexible installation to suit individual

Klargester manufacture treatment plants from

More mind control stuff. back 2 a
I can't imagine that all of this stuff is true, but just in case that guy I met 35 years ago
skulking around the fringes of the campus in Pasadena CA was a real victim of the
CIA "Mind Controol" (? ) Nazis etc. with his aluminum pie plate under his navy blue
wool watch cap & stinking of "Piss, paranoia pot & Booze" and ranting like a
schizophreni   ( about chip implants in the human brane) and , and dodging invisible
cdeath rays wallowing on the sidewalk like that baldheaded guy from the 3 stooge's...

Just in case this stuff is or could be real, this page exists for the critical, the ridiculous,
the wholly absurd and the plausible root of such beliefs and, dare I suggest, delusions.
Delusions can be tricky that's why I have a single page for the Uni Bomber Manifesto.

Not Charley Manson or any group leader, just the possible universal unconscious stream
of consciousness that "transition" or that "Auditory Hallucination," that voice IN the head
that is basically YOU awake or In a trance, Or a long suppressed Rant boiling over to a
new clarity, in to a poem. (It could happen!) The mad gone sane, the sane without a clue
or a care, stuck in the amber of all that bureaucracy and eye ball to eye ball rectatude

The inmates in the emergency ward (NYC it self is an asylum some say) explaining the
method you must employ to get your med's and how to neutralize them so you can
actually leave the hospital alive and intact "not a victim of Psycho surgery" or in a
chemical straight jacket .

Yes folks there were actually X  Nazis, lots of them, in the CIA. They Admit It !!, but
they are dead, no? Yes no there is and always has been a  Shadow Government, so what?
(

You likely won't ever know if you are real lucky you will never feel the blow back from
our policies.

Yes CIA personnel in southeast Asia brought and sold heroin to the US. For eight years,
heroin was smuggled inside the returning corpses of American military men who died
in Vietnam- then sold to major city urban ghettos.

[As of now the Talaban and the"northern alliance "are Doing Opium big time any one in the
press or our government suggest "we" bomb  the Poppy fields or nuke the people that are
killing us with drugs ?]

Just like in The Living Theater Play The Connection with Waren Finity ,
Canada Lee's kid Carl Lee & that tenor sax player Jackey Mc Leen.

Seneca was the tutor of Nero and in the end Nero, his infamous student, had him kill
himself shortly before He, Nero, was to do the same. All civilizations have at their core
a hubris that is ultimately toxic. And that arrogance, most can perceive but choose to
ignore, may in our time come crashing down as the guy in the foil hat made from pieced
together "Dolly Madison" Alumunum Pie Plates with  flies buzzing around his head
claiming That the Pope was a Nazi  (VaticanNazis.html )&The President, President Franklin
Roosevelt.... Wanted!!  the Japinese to Bomb Perl Harber!! (The evidence is very compelling
that the Roosevelt Administration deliberately failed to act to stop Pearl Harbor in order
to mobilize enough national SUPPORT!!  (

a Bo Jangles tat-too on a plank & drops invisibly into oblivion singing I told you so,
I told you so... I told you so,I told you so, Hey, we are all Walking on a plank of some
sort we may not see and the guy with the scimitar and that fake pirate eye patch poking
us in the back and nudging us forward inch by inch toward a visible emotional abyss
may be our boss, not some conspiratorial evil maniac, just a guy who can perceive you
or me as lesser and act on a whim accordingly.

Nothing more sinister than not following the "golden rule." Ah, but that IS politics
in a nut shell. Mind control mass culture one-on-one, what's the difference?
We are ultimately held by fact of free will or at least a memory of it.
One must act and think in some fashion. Who should our actions benefit, ourselves
alone or all society? We alone can choose. If we are still ambulatory and cognitive,
we still have a chance to get it right .

Our Friend M87, ABOVE, orginally from Cetus. M87, aka the SUPERSTRING BEANPOD,
is now making an end run through Virgo (at times more quickly than the speed of light)
and into the end zone to score the BIG ONE, the winning touchdown. Boy oh boy you don't
want to miss the dancing and cheering after the game! It will be one big celestial
celebration! See that colorful plasma at the lower end of the image in the "M87"
Rescue Team graphics above?
That will be the KO punch that wins the match! It is a trap sack of time-twisting

magneto-toroids that "extinguish" gamma particles, quicker than you can blink! It will bag each
and every one of the "Gamma" death machines and "stars" like frenzied rats on a plain of dirty
prairie dogs. It will even scoop up the prairie dogs too!!! This fight will NOT be televised by
Las Vegas gaming syndicates, sorry. There won't be time enough to tape it!

The M87 Rescue Team (some researchers have dubbed them the Antarii Rescue Alliance) has the
technology to travel at will even faster than light, and also, to snuff out gamma radiation
irreversibly ----- OUT OUT OUT BRIEF CANDLE!!! ... of ALL n-Space Dimensions [ask a topologist
if you think I am kidding about the n-spaces]. The Cassiopeia Creatures who have been simulating
humans on Earth since 2,700 B.C. will now be beaten, bested, outdone, and truly taken out. They
will find their "vanishing point," without fail. Those of the gamma gobblers who wish to cooperate
with the Rescue Team, here on Earth, will be treated with due consideration, should they decide
to switch sides, in the next few weeks. Just like the Bible promised over and over and over again!!!
THE FOUR HORSEMEN -- 05.05.05 -- now we have had five years of earthquakes, pole reversals, ice
cap meltings, and global warming --- do you need more proof?
Traveling at more than 6x the speed of light, M87 is here and there and everywhere!!!! How lucky
we are!!! Get out the welcome mats!!

NOTICE THE HOT ACCRETION DISK within the ESKIMO DEATH SKULL!!! This is a rare close-up of a "space tick".
Spawner of a ancient race in Upper Mongolia and which also "seeded" about 70 kilometers outside of
Alice Springs in the hot Australian Desert, where a swarm of meteorties struck down under around
2,700 BC. This "Eskimo" was badly named, for it is one of the hottest devices in the cosmos, and
also a very deadly, bio-lethal weapon; artifically made --- notice the Skull-like fake diamond
in the center!! EXTREMELY Radiation blasting ... be very careful! Highly toxic to "soft" stars
and biological life!!!

Hi-tech Timer [above] indicating just how quickly the weapon like the one pictured above, the
"Eskimo Doomsday Machine," in the Sign of Gemini, "ate" an entire star system, last September 15,
1999, in OUR OWN Milky Way Galaxy. It is nearly now on the fringe of our solar system --- this very
day. In just 30 seconds this micro-quasar, gamma-exploding entity "gobbled up" an entire star system
last September 1999 right here in our own "hood".

VERY RARE DIAGRAM [above] depicting the victimization and annihilation of a starbody eco-system
The victimized star system above is named NGC 3077, just recently identified by Kraken scouts and
exploratory teams
NGC 3077 was classified in 1943 by Carl Seyfert as an active nucleus galaxy. Today it has been
de-classified to the status of "deconvoluted".

TOTAL DESTRUCTION OF A STAR SYSTEM within our Galaxy Just LAST SEPTEMBER 1999
... you won't see this illustration [directly above, overhead] anywhere else, so memorize it, ...
the "New Order" creeps will try to tell you it is FALSE!!
his ABOVE, is a picture of the "Cat's Eye," a Hot Accretion Disk, NGC 6543, currently in the Sign
of Sagittarius, after it was "fueled" by eating up the Sept. 15, 1999 Star System [its corpse not
yet properly identified]. "The Cat's Eye," a cosmic relative of the "Eskimo Doom's Day Machine,"
indulged herself in very unladylike pursuits [in fact, she was disgraceful] disgorged herself with
all sorts of gas [streaming out of her in a pair of high-speed jets of gas that lie at right angles
to an equatorial ring], and immediately set out for our happy little solar-neighborhood of "Earth,"
to come and gobble us too. But, fortunately, we have FRIENDS who are not only unbeatable, they are
rushing here to help us (they failed long ago when Venus was attacked, and are QUITE determined not
to fail again)!

Note: The "Cat's Eye" is not to be confused with the "Cat's Paw Nebula", which is NGC 6334.

HERE ... again ... the tragic aftermath of an "Eskimo" GAMMA RAY attack on a victimized star system,
by the ole "ONE-TWO laser beam punch" of the blackhole "Cigar Galactic System [CGS], "partnering"
with a Hot Accretion Disk [H.A.D., as in "has-been"] ... much like an anus "partners" with its

cigar-shaped turd ...
as they jointly eat a sun, star, or entire star system! NOT a pretty sight!!
This cosmic creature is already on the prowl to eat again, [just look at it, hungry AGAIN .. and it
has the radioactive mouth, teeth and ethical IQ of a neutrino shark [look at the sharkteeth-like chain
of gamma emitting FUZZYBALLS above]!

This is a close-up of the x-ray GASBAG M82, called the "Cigar Galaxy," cause it's always blowing smoke rings
and boasting. This "Smoker" is in cahoots with little fella M81, who's actually just a "heated accretion
diskette off the old stump", trying to take after his Father, M81. Together they patrol the cosmos looking
for little star systems to eat (like our small sun and solar system). They're also relatives of the "Eskimo
Doomsday Machine".

But they won't eat our sun!!! NO ... they WON'T eat OUR sun. We have friends!!
Look for "little fella" M82 below [please strain your eyes to see PeeWee] ... his picture is just below the
spectacular photo of our big GIANT friends on M87 [M87, see BELOW] ... on their way to help Earth [flying in
from Virgo in the next few days] to give a long-awaited burial to these pesky little gamma gangs, a swarm of
real pagans, who have been freeloading here in our solar system WAY TOO LONG!!

Let's take a new look here in a little news break --- THE NEW YORK TIMES REPORTS IN FIRST WEEK OF AUGUST, 2004 ---
The galaxy M87, which is about 50 million light-years from Earth

will it take on the RADIOACTIVE CANNIBALS ????

Songs of the Galaxies, and What They Mean

By DENNIS OVERBYE, THE NEW YORK TIMES

Published: August 3, 2004

M87 in Virgo !!!

Another black hole is singing, although it seems a little tone-deaf.

Last year, astronomers discovered that outbursts from a giant black hole were spreading pressure waves through the thin hot gas of the distant
Perseus cluster of galaxies. The frequency of these waves was equivalent to a B flat, 57 octaves below middle C, so the astronomers calculated.
Now another group of astronomers has discovered waves from another massive black hole spreading outward from the center of a galaxy known
as M87 at the heart of the Virgo cluster, about 50 million light-years from Earth. They appear as rings and arcs of brightness in images of the galaxy
obtained by NASA's Chandra X-Ray Observatory.
The sound waves in M87, spaced about four million years apart, are a little more than an octave higher than the Perseus black hole, they said, and
a little rougher and less pure.
"If one could hear the sound, it would be more like the cannons in the '1812 Overture' than the pure tone of a musical instrument," said Dr. William
Forman of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.
Speaking of the Virgo and Perseus results, Dr. Christine Jones of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center, also on the team, said, "We are seeing evidence
of recurrent outbursts of the black holes in these galaxies."
As a result of enormous pressure and magnetic fields, some of that stuff would never make it into the hole but would be squeezed like toothpaste
and shot across space, away from the black hole in two oppositely directed jets.
The more black holes eat, the more they spill, and it is widely thought that their feeding frenzies power the violence seen in the nuclei of many galaxies,
including the powerful quasars that are so bright they outshine their parent galaxies. Although the most massive black holes amount to only a tiny
fraction of the mass of their galaxies, a tenth of a percent at most, they release huge quantities of energy, Dr. Loeb pointed out.
A wealth of observations of M87 over the years have illuminated, in messy, chaotic detail, the feeding habits of its central black hole, estimated to weigh
in at two billion to three billion times the mass of the Sun. Dr. Forman said evidence of the messiness includes a sharp knotted spike, or jet, of energetic
particles shooting from the galaxy's core; giant lobes of radio energy extending far out into intergalactic space; other bubbles and cavities, apparently
inflated by the jet, in the inner regions of the galaxy; and a pair of arms of X-ray emission, one of which resembles the column of a rising mushroom
 cloud from a nuclear explosion.

I smell a giant (inflatable) rat!
A small (non-union) firm crafts giant balloons of rats, greedy pigs, and more for parades and picket lines.
By Julie Sloane, Brunswick, Ohio

1 of 8

We'll just come right out and say it: There's an elephant in the room at David Scherba's factory. Specifically, a 27-foot-tall
pachyderm-shaped balloon.
You can't take your eyes off it - and that's the point. Scherba's business, Inflatable Images (inflatableimages.com), is one of the largest
manufacturers of nonhelium inflatable advertising in the U.S.

At his facility in Brunswick, Ohio, David Scherba, 50, and his brother Robert, 49, have sewn everything from a 50-foot Vince Lombardi Trophy

internet real estateMay 21, 2007 Leave a Comment
For the vast majority of people, the best thing to do is concentrate on their personal residence when it comes to real estate. Building a portfolio of
real estate can be an extremely complex venture, as there are many moving parts to the process.
There are so many variables that come into play. These include location, negotiation skills, liquidity, devotion of management, time commitment, closing
costs, insurance, taxes, repairs, etc. Most people would be better served if they focused on their personal residence and looked to maximize the profit
 through this venue.
If one wants to become successful in investing in real estate, one needs to be very knowledgeable about mortgages. Not just conventional mortgages
but interest only, balloons, ARMS, and some other esoteric mortgages that all can be used depending on the needs and wishes of the investor. Rates
and points also factor into the equation, as do credit ratings, down payments, etc. Thus, this is not a market that lends itself well to the neophyte.
And nefarious and ill-informed mortgage brokers abound. In my view, the barriers to entry in the mortgage broker business are few. It is easier to
become a mortgage broker than a massage therapist. So finding a qualified mortgage banker or broker can make all the difference in the world.
I have found that similar to the bond market, where the really big money likes to play.
One of the great plusses of real estate is that it is the only investment that one can make and live in it at the same time. Also, you can watch it on a
daily basis.
If one wants to play the real estate market, one can use such vehicles as ETF's, REIT's, and stocks of mortgage companies and builders. Subcategories
include aftermarket stocks such as Home Depot and Lowe's. Further down the line there are subgroups such as cement, wiring, and plumbing
construction equipment like
Cat and Gradall.
Before considering purchasing residential real estate, I suggest an intensive study of the industry and the markets that one wants to be involved in.
All real estate is regional. Commercial property can become even more complex. Once again, in my view, caveat emptor.

Interesting Variant of the Prisoner’s Dilemma, from Philip J. McDonnell
May 27, 2007 Leave a Comment
The Traveler's Dilemma and Prisoner's Dilemma are two examples of cooperative-competitive games. They contain aspects of reward for cooperative
behavior and rewards for competitive behavior. In the Traveler's Dilemma game picking a higher number is cooperative play. The player is maximizing
the reward to the two-player community. Picking the low Nash Equilibrium is competitive play. The player is maximizing the minimum reward. Naturally
as the reward for competitive play increases the number of actual players using competitive strategies increases as well.

There is a strong parallel to the market. If we all buy stocks with all of our money they will go up. The community of investors will all gain. But human
nature being what it is we will always be at least somewhat fearful that someone else will sell first and we will be the last to get out. Thus based on
a news event or even non-news some will choose the competitive choice to get out early. They seek to avoid the maximum risk of a putative future
decline by getting out before the other guy. However the long-term drift strongly indicates that such anti-cooperative behavior is self-defeating and
leads to opportunity loss.

Flaws in Clean Water Restoration Act Exposed in Congressional Hearings
From Mike Hardiman comes this roundup of information about recent Congressional hearings on the Clear Water Restoration Act:
Both the United States Senate and House of Representatives recently held hearings on the Oberstar/Feingold Clean Water Restoration Act.
These hearings are a clear sign that the environmental community intends to push this controversial legislation to a vote in both houses of
 Congress sooner rather than later.

The Senate hearing was held on April 9 under the direction of bill co-sponsor Senator Barbara Boxer of California, and the House followed on
April 16 with a hearing chaired by the legislation's House sponsor, Representative James Oberstar from Minnesota.

Contrary to the sponsors’ wishes, the two hearings exposed numerous flaws and very strong opposition to HR2421/S1870, the proposal to
dramatically expand the federal government's role in land use regulation.

Senate Hearing
The Senate hearing, held by the Environment and Public Works Committee, unveiled several issues to which bill sponsors had difficulty responding.
Senator James Inhofe of Oklahoma spoke at length regarding the bill's removal of the phrase "navigable" from the term "navigable waters."
He claimed it would lead to a dramatic expansion of federal authority over wetlands from navigable waters to nearly anything that is wet.
Both witnesses and Senators supporting the bill denied that it would be an expansion of power, despite the removal of the key modifying word
"navigable." Meanwhile, a witness opposing the bill, rancher Randall Smith, said of removing the word navigable, "it is a dream for litigators" and
"it opens up a whole can of worms."
Supporters stated that the bill's purpose is only to clear up confusion generated by a recent Supreme Court decision, known as the Rapanos case,
while opponents showed that it was actually a considerable expansion of authority.
Bill supporter Senator Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, a former federal prosecutor and state attorney general, lectured at length witness
David Brand, a county engineer from Ohio opposed to the legislation. Whitehouse insisted repeatedly that "we are just picking up where we left
off (before the Rapanos decision)."

Brand replied, "No, and repeating that doesn't make it true."
An exasperated Whitehouse responded, "Yes, it does make it true."
Senator David Vitter of Louisiana was opposed to the bill, and stated that he could not think of any kind of water that was not covered by the bill.

Attempting to contradict him, Clinton-era EPA Administrator Carol Browner said puddles were exempt. Vitter asked for a definition of a puddle,
and Browner was unable to directly answer the question. Senator Whitehouse unconvincingly chipped in, insisting that "EPA has no interest in
chasing puddles."
Senator John Barrasso of Wyoming asked witnesses how the proposed bill benefits ranchers and farmers. Bill supporters did not address the
question, while opponents said it would be harmful.
House Hearing
Representative James Oberstar is both the bill sponsor and chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, which held its own
hearing April 15. This marathon session featured twenty-three witnesses and forty-four congressmen questioning them, resulting in an eleven hour
hearing that stretched into late evening.
Oberstar accused the Supreme Court of "legislating from the bench" and said his bill only sought to repeal two court rulings on wetlands from recent
years which protected private property, the SWANCC and Rapanos decisions.
This was challenged by congressman John Mica of Florida, who said the Oberstar bill would "fundamentally alter the course of water regulation"
and produced a display featuring several hundred organizations opposed to the legislation and a pile of petitions several feet high opposing the bill.
Oberstar said his bill would clear up ambiguity that had been created by the Supreme Court. Mica agreed that there would be no ambiguity under
the bill, because there would be no restriction on federal control of all water, since any non-federal or private rights would be overridden.
Congressman John Boozman from Arkansas pointed out that the bill proposes to regulate all "activities" near waters, instead of current law, which
says only "discharges" into waters are regulated.
Some members were undecided. Congressman Nick Rahall from West Virginia did not take a position for or against the bill, but said "whiskey is for
drinking, water is for fighting." After several witnesses complained about both current law and the proposed legislation, Congressman John Salazar
from Colorado told them there must be more than complaints, and asked how to make the bill better.
Witness Virginia Albrecht pointed out another major change proposed in the bill, that federal agencies be given the power to regulate "to the limit of
constitutional authority." Congresswoman Thelma Drake from Virginia agreed that these are "absolute words" which could fundamentally change
federal-state relationships.

Attorney Robert Trout testified that "if this bill passes, it will put my kids through college" because of all the new litigation that will be generated.
Witness Linda Runbeck, a former Minnesota state legislator, said the bill negatively impacts private property rights and hurts families because most
of their net worth is tied up in the land they own, which may be sharply devalued by the bill. She also brought up the poll commissioned by the
National Center for Public Policy Research, which shows that when the bill is described to them, most Americans stating an opinion do not support it.
Overall, a very thorough airing of opinion was had in the two hearings, and the legislation's many weaknesses were displayed out in the open and
for the record. However, the bill's supporters remain determined first to wipe out gains made by property owners in the Supreme Court, and, second,
to expand federal authority beyond current law.

NCPPR Senior Fellow Helps Clear the Air on Clean Water
From David Almasi:
On the heels of congressional hearings in both the House and Senate, the Washington Examiner published a scathing editorial against the proposed
Clean Water Restoration Act (CWRA). The editorial came after National Center Senior Fellow R.J. Smith had a long conversation with Examiner editorial
page editor Quin Hillyer about the April 16 House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee hearing on the CWRA.
The Examiner editorial read, in part:
With the real estate market already reeling, Congress would be foolish to do anything that would further drive down property values. It would be
even worse to do so while also mounting a wholesale assault on private property rights. But that's what would be done by the misnamed Clean Water
Restoration Act sponsored by Rep. James Oberstar, D-MN. Oberstar's proposal is so bad it ought to be permanently buried six feet under dry land...
Now comes Oberstar, who is chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. He held an April 16 committee hearing on his
misnamed bill, which would vastly expand the definition of "waters" covered by stringent regulation to include almost any area, "interstate and
intrastate," that ever gets wet. Oberstar set a May 1 deadline for interested parties to respond to hearing testimony.
The National Center for Public Policy Research recently spearheaded a coalition letter of over 50 organizations concerned about the CWRA's threat
on private property rights and published a National Policy Analysis paper on the threat the bill poses to hunting and sporting activity.
The full Washington Examiner editorial against the CWRA can be read by clicking here.

A Chip for a Neuron
http://www.technologyreview.com/Biotech/14331/

URL:
http://www.medgadget.com/archives/2005/03/a_chip_for_a_ne_1.html

The MIT Technology Review describes the research behind the first direct electrical interface between

a semiconductor device and an individual mammalian nerve cell:

Context: The neurons of the mammal brain are hard to study, even when they're isolated in the lab. For
more than a decade, scientists have analyzed the large neurons of leeches and snails by linking them
directly to silicon chips that record their electrical activity. But mammalian neurons are smaller, and
though they can be grown on silicon, the resulting signals are typically too weak to yield useful data.
The electrical activity of mammalian brain cells can be read with electrodes, but that can be imprecise
 and requires careful preparation steps.

Moritz Voelker and Peter Fromherz at the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry have now designed the first
computer chip that can record the firing of mammalian neurons, though so far only in a petri dish.

Methods and Results: As a neuron fires, the voltage across it changes, so a neuron on a chip affects how
transistors underneath it conduct electricity. But in chips with conventional transistor designs, there's
so much naturally occurring noise that it swamps neural signals. So Voelker and Fromherz changed the
geometry of the transistors to suit the electrical properties of living neurons. They buried the conducting
channels of their transistors a few nanometers deeper than usual, making the transistor more sensitive to
the low voltages and firing speeds of neurons. The transistors could detect the signal of an ?individual
rat neuron in a group, without the elaborate sample preparation that ?conventional electrodes require.
What's more, the tran?sistors are significantly smaller than individual neurons and could in principle provide
information on how subsections of a neuron behave.

Take 2 shrooms and call me in the morning
Professor of Psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine Dr. Charles Grob and Marilyn Schiltz PhD with the Institute
of Noetic Sciences discussed new research with hallucinogenic substances from a medical-holistic perspective.
Promising experiments using hallucinogens to treat difficult conditions such as alcoholism were conducted during the
1950s & 60s but were eventually curtailed because the drugs became illegal. However, several new studies have been
approved in the last few years, reported Grob.
Grob has been involved in a experimental trial, treating advanced stage cancer patients with psilocybin. Results have
shown an improvement in the quality of the patients' lives that lasted for up to months after the use of the drug,
he noted. The University of Arizona has also found promising results using psilocybin to treat obsessive-compulsive
disorder. The methodology to evaluate such experiments has improved since the early experiments of the 50s & 60s, he
added.
In addition to the medical findings, Schiltz spoke about the transformative qualities that hallucinogens can bring to
people, opening them up to a broader sense of reality. Many indigenous groups have acquired types of wisdom through
psychoactive plant use, she detailed. Schiltz will be one of the presenters at the upcoming Consciousness in Action
conference.
In another study, the people taking the drug rated the hallucinogenic experience as "stressful" at some times but
"psychologically and spiritually uplifting" - describing encounters with past lives, faraway planets, and communing
with deities.

BLACK INTELLIGENCE AND "WHITE" IQ TESTS

I know that conjoining the two terms "IQ" and "black" casts me into the outer darkness as far as most people are concerned but psychometrics
is my field of academic specialization so I feel that I have an obligation to tell what is known about the topic concerned. And I often do, because
so few others are willing to tell the public all that is known.
Chris Brand has drawn our attention to a strange book recently issued by Stephen Murdoch called IQ: A Smart History of a Failed Idea. Murdoch
attacks all use of IQ tests. Since Murdoch appears to have no academic background in psychometrics, the book is a very arrogant one. Murdoch
is in effect saying that he can in one fell swoop soar above the combined thinking and research of the hundreds of keen minds who have worked
on the IQ concept (which scientists call 'g') over the last century or so. There is however no sign in the book that he has anything to say that has
not been carefully considered and dismissed many times in the last 100 years. Rather than soaring, he simply shows his ignorance.
I will therefore mention just one point that even Chris does not refute as well as he might: The claim that because IQ tests are devised by whites
they cannot validly be used to test blacks. This claim has of course been the focus of a very large body of research and has resulted in the production
of widely-used "culture fair" tests -- i.e. tests that do not depend on any particular educational or linguistic background but which nonetheless provide
good predictions of success in many areas of life for many different populations. These tests show the black/white gap to be at least as large as other
 tests do.

What is often overlooked, however, is that one group of psychologists (McElwain & Kearney) went even further: Rather than construct a test that had
NO cultural biases, they constructed a test that WAS biased -- but biased towards blacks rather than towards whites. They included in their test (the
Queensland Test or QT) only those items that blacks responded well to and which actually could be shown to be valid predictors of problem solving
performance among blacks. In effect, blacks constructed the test themselves -- by providing the responses used to select the individual questions
within the test.
But you know what happened, don't you? On a test intrinsically biased against them, whites still greatly outperformed blacks. So there really is an
underlying difference between blacks and whites. The difference is not just the result of naively constructed tests. The blacks to which the QT was
applied were Australian Aborigines and Melanesians but these groups are very much like people of African ancestry in scoring much below whites on
any test that has ever been tried. The QT ended up, in other words, giving results very much like those from culture-fair tests and it is now normally
classified as simply another culture-fair test.
A very important point to make here, however, is that general problem-solving ability (which is what IQ tests measure) is not the only ability that is
important to survival. A bright smile, an ability to run fast and an ability to get on well with other people are obvious examples of other attributes
important to survival. And Australian Aborigines do have some mental attributes that are very well developed indeed. Anybody who knows them well
will tell you that they are in general a very friendly and immensely polite and sociable people with an excellent sense of humour -- though alcohol
 transmogrifies them.
And those who know Aborigines really well will tell you that Aborigines have something else: an absolutely eerie ability to observe, remember and
interpret the physical landscape around them. For this reason they were widely used in the early days as "trackers" -- people who could track someone
(usually fleeing criminals) down by observing minute marks he had made while walking through the landscape. This greater spatial ability has been
recorded academically in the work of Kearins -- and the report by Klekamp et al. (1994) that Australian aboriginals have a larger visual cortex than
Caucasians would appear to provide the explanation of the phenomenon.
So any claim that whites are superior to blacks is simply too sweeping. In some ways whites are superior and in other ways blacks are. Which area
of superiority is most advantageous will depend on the situation. In situations constructed by whites, blacks often do very poorly. That there is any
remedy for that, however, seems most unlikely.

Francis Bacon Archive
Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion  1944

"Mr Francis Bacon is a very capable artist…But the subject of his pictures are so extraordinary, and, indeed,
so extremely repellent, that it is scarcely possible to consider anything else. His themes are as vivid and
as meaningless as a nightmare… Perhaps the nastiest of his ideas is what seems to be some sort of visceral
specimen, a pale and flabby bag of flesh.”
The Times, November 22nd, 1949.

"The human beings in Bacon's pictures seem half-animal, or half-reptilian. Sometimes they have the whiteness
of death; sometimes they are white and red, like joints of meat... He wants to make the animal come through
the human being; and he wants the paint itself to carry its own implications..."

Francis Bacon: The Observer Profile; The Observer Weekend Review, Sunday, 27th May, 1962.

"Bacon had worked on a triptych in the last years of the War, his traumas put on board with rough strokes.
He admitted to the influence of Picasso’s work in the ‘twenties, but he had gone further in distorting the
organic form that related to the human image. The triptych was to receive some hostility for its ferocity,
one critic writing that Bacon had discovered ‘in the art of painting the felicities of the death warrant
[and] covered the lamp-shades of his immediate predecessors with human skins.’ He did shock, he did strike
for the bowels, the inner nerve."

Andrew Sinclair, Francis Bacon – His Life and Violent Times, Crown Publishing, New York 1993.

"For most people, Bacon causes a shock. He says himself that his work is making images, and these are shock-images.
The meaning of this shock does not refer to something 'sensational' (which is represented), but depends on sensation,
on lines and colours. You are confronted with the intense presence of figures, sometimes solitary figures, sometimes
with several bodies, suspended in a plane, in an eternity of colours... You can sense power and violence in him
along with great charm As soon as he sits more than an hour, he twists in every direction; he really looks like a
Bacon. But his posture is always simple, given a sensation that he might feel."

Gilles Deleuze, Two Regimes of Madness, Texts & Interviews 1975-1995, The MIT Press, 2006.

And so begins the road to the permanent takeover by the Reich wing

They can't win at the ballot box all the time so they're getting us ready for when their glorious leader finally
takes over full time and cancels the election.

BRUTE NEIGHBORS
By Henry David Thoreau

Note.—The author of this sketch, Henry David Thoreau, who lived from 1817 to 1862, was one of the oddest of American
men of genius. He was educated at Harvard University, but he did not care, in the common phrase, to “turn his learning
to practical account;” that is, save for a short time when he taught school, he did not make it earn his living for him.
His theory was that life and energy were being wasted when a man spent in working more time than he absolutely needed
to in order to provide himself with necessities; and this theory he carried out in his own life. While he lived in
Concord, he did odd jobs at carpentering, surveying, and gardening, and worked for a time at his father’s trade of
pencil making. However, he contended that a man was doing himself an injustice if he kept on at that work after he had
reached the point where he could make no further improvement in his pencils.

From 1845 to 1847 Thoreau lived as a hermit in a hut which he had built on the shore of Walden Pond, and the simple
life he led there gave him plenty of leisure for the things he liked best—the study of nature, the grappling with
philosophical problems, and the society of friends. The result of the two years at Walden Pond was his best book,
Walden, or Life in the Woods, a work which is distinguished for its peculiarly truthful and sympathetic studies of
 nature.

Thoreau refused to perform any of the ordinary duties of a citizen; he never voted, he never paid taxes. Once he was
arrested because he refused to pay his taxes, and was thrown into jail; his friends remonstrated with him, but still
he refused to pay. However, when his friends paid the sum he made no objections to accepting his release, nor [261]
did he in the future make any objections when his friends quietly paid his taxes.

The Pond in Winter and Winter Animals, which are contained in this volume, are also from Thoreau.

Why do precisely these objects which we behold make a world? Why has man just these species of animals for his neighbors;
as if nothing but a mouse could have filled this crevice? I suspect that Pilpay & Co. have put animals to their best use,
for they are all beasts of burden, in a sense, made to carry some portion of our thoughts.

The mice which haunted my house were not the common ones, which are said to have been introduced into the country, but
a wild native kind not found in the village. I sent one to a distinguished naturalist, and it interested him much. When
I was building, one of these had its nest underneath the house, and before I had laid the second floor, and swept out
the shavings, would come out regularly at lunch time and pick up the crumbs at my feet. It probably had never seen a
man before; and it soon became quite familiar, and would run over my shoes and up my clothes. It could readily ascend
the sides of the room by short impulses, like a squirrel, which it resembled in its motions. At length, as I leaned with
my elbow on the bench one day, it ran up my clothes, and along my sleeve, and round and round the paper which held my
dinner, while I kept the latter close, and dodged and played at bo-peep with it; and when at last I held still a piece
of cheese between my thumb and[262] finger, it came and nibbled it, sitting in my hand, and afterward cleaned its face
and paws, like a fly, and walked away.

A phoebe soon built in my shed, and a robin for protection in a pine which grew against the house. In June the partridge
(Tetrao umbellus), which is so shy a bird, led her brood past my windows, from the woods in the rear to the front of my
house, clucking and calling to them like a hen, and in all her behavior proving herself the hen of the woods. The young
suddenly disperse on your approach, at a signal from the mother, as if a whirlwind had swept them away, and they so
exactly resemble the dried leaves and twigs that many a traveler has placed his foot in the midst of a brood, and heard
the whir of the old bird as she flew off, and her anxious calls and mewing, or seen her trail her wings to attract his
attention, without suspecting their neighborhood. The parent will sometimes roll and spin round before you in such a
dishabille, that you cannot, for a few moments, detect what kind of creature it is. The young squat still and flat,
approach make them run again and betray themselves. You may even tread on them, or have your eyes on them for a minute,
without discovering them. I have held them in my open hand at such a time, and still their only care, obedient to their
mother and their instinct, was to squat there without fear or trembling. So perfect is this instinct, that once, when I
had laid them on the leaves again, and one accidentally fell on its side, it was found with the rest in exactly the[263]
same position ten minutes afterward. They are not callow like the young of most birds, but more perfectly developed and
precocious even than chickens. The remarkably adult yet innocent expression of their open and serene eyes is very memorable.
All intelligence seems reflected in them. They suggest not merely the purity of infancy, but a wisdom clarified by
experience. Such an eye was not born when the bird was, but is coeval with the sky it reflects. The woods do not yield
another such gem. The traveler does not often look into such a limpid well. The ignorant or reckless sportsman often shoots
the parent at such a time, and leaves these innocents to fall a prey to some prowling beast or bird, or gradually mingle
with the decaying leaves which they so much resemble. It is said that when hatched by a hen they will directly disperse
on some alarm, and are so lost, for they never hear the mother’s call which gathers them again. These were my hens and
chickens.

It is remarkable how many creatures live wild and free though secret in the woods, and still sustain themselves in the
neighborhood of towns, suspected by hunters only. How retired the otter manages to live there! He grows to be four feet
long, as big as a small boy, perhaps without any human being getting a glimpse of him. I formerly saw the raccoon in the
woods behind where my house is built, and probably still heard their whinnering at night. Commonly I rested an hour or
two in the shade at noon, after planting, and ate my lunch, and read a little by a spring which was the source of a swamp
and of a brook, oozing from under Brister’s Hill, half a mile from my field. The approach to this[264] was through a
succession of descending grassy hollows, full of young pitch pines, into a larger wood about the swamp. There, in a very
secluded and shaded spot, under a spreading white pine, there was yet a clean firm sward to sit on. I had dug out the
spring and made a well of clear gray water, where I could dip up a pailful without roiling it, and thither I went for this
purpose almost every day in midsummer, when the pond was warmest. Thither, too, the woodcock led her brood, to probe the
mud for worms, flying but a foot above them down the bank, while they ran in a troop beneath; but at last, spying me, she
would leave her young and circle round and round me, nearer and nearer till within four or five feet, pretending broken
wings and legs, to attract my attention, and get off her young, who would already have taken up their march, with faint
wiry peep, single file through the swamp, as she directed. Or I heard the peep of the young when I could not see the
parent bird. There too the turtledoves sat over the spring, or fluttered from bough to bough of the soft white pines over
my head; or the red squirrel, coursing down the nearest bough, was particularly familiar and inquisitive. You only need
sit still long enough in some attractive spot in the woods that all its inhabitants may exhibit themselves to you by turns.

 BATTLE OF THE ANTS
I was witness to events of a less peaceful character. One day when I went out to my wood pile, or rather my pile of
stumps, I observed two large ants, the one red, the other much larger, nearly half an inch long, and black, fiercely
contending with one another. Having once got hold they never let go, but struggled and wrestled and rolled on[265] the
chips incessantly. Looking further, I was surprised to find that the chips were covered with such combatants, that it
was not a duellum, but a bellum, a war between two races of ants, the red always pitted against the black, and frequently
two red ones to one black. The legions of these Myrmidons covered all the hills and vales in my wood yard, and the ground
was already strewn with the dead and dying, both red and black. It was the only battle which I have ever witnessed, the
only battlefield I ever trod while the battle was raging; internecine war; the red republicans on the one hand, and the
black imperialists on the other. On every side they were engaged in deadly combat, yet without any noise that I could
hear, and human soldiers never fought so resolutely. I watched a couple that were fast locked in each other’s embraces,
in a little sunny valley amid the chips, now at noonday prepared to fight till the sun went down, or life went out. The
smaller red champion had fastened himself like a vise to his adversary’s front, and through all the[266] tumblings on
that field never for an instant ceased to gnaw at one of his feelers near the root, having already caused the other to
go by the board; while the stronger black one dashed him from side to side, and, as I saw on looking nearer, had already
divested him of several of his members. They fought with more pertinacity than bulldogs. Neither manifested the least
disposition to retreat. It was evident that their battle-cry was “Conquer or die.” In the meanwhile there came along a
single red ant on the hillside of this valley, evidently full of excitement, who either had despatched his foe, or had
not yet taken part in the battle; probably the latter, for he had lost none of his limbs; whose mother had charged him
to return with his shield or upon it. Or perchance he was some Achilles, who had nourished his wrath apart, and had now
come to avenge or rescue his Patroclus. He saw this unequal combat from afar—for the blacks were nearly twice the size
of the red—he drew near with rapid pace till he stood on his guard within half an inch of the combatants; then, watching
his opportunity, he sprang upon the black warrior, and commenced his operations near the root of his right fore-leg,
leaving the foe to select among his own members; and so there were three united for life, as if a new kind of attraction
had been invented which put all other locks and cements to shame. I should not have wondered by this time to find that
they had their respective musical bands stationed on some eminent chip, and playing their national airs the while, to
excite the slow and cheer the dying combatants. I was myself excited somewhat even as if they had been men. The more
you think of it, the[267] less the difference. And certainly there is not the fight recorded in Concord history, at least,
if in the history of America, that will bear a moment’s comparison with this, whether for the numbers engaged in it, or
for the patriotism and heroism displayed. For numbers and for carnage it was an Austerlitz or Dresden. Concord Fight!
Two killed on the patriots’ side, and Luther Blanchard wounded! Why, here every ant was a Butterick—“Fire! for God’s
sake, fire!”—and thousands shared the fate of Davis and Hosmer. There was not one hireling there. I have no doubt that
it was a principle they fought for, as much as our ancestors, and not to avoid a three-penny tax on their tea; and the
results of this battle will be as important and memorable to those whom it concerns as those of the battle of Bunker
Hill, at least.

I took up the chip on which the three I have particularly described were struggling, carried it into my house, and placed
it under a tumbler on my window sill, in order to see the issue. Holding a microscope to the first-mentioned red ant, I
saw that, though he was assiduously gnawing at the near fore-leg of his enemy, having severed his remaining feeler, his
own breast was all torn away, exposing what vitals he had there to the jaws of the black warrior, whose breastplate was
apparently too thick for him to pierce; and the dark carbuncles of the sufferer’s eyes shone with ferocity such as war
only could excite. They struggled half an hour longer under the tumbler, and when I looked again the black soldier had
severed the heads of his foes from their bodies, and still living heads were hanging on either side of him like ghastly
trophies[268] at his saddle-bow, still apparently as firmly fastened as ever, and he was endeavoring with feeble struggles,
being without feelers and with only the remnant of a leg, and I know not how many other wounds, to divest himself
of them; which at length, after half an hour more, he accomplished. I raised the glass, and he went off over the window
sill in that crippled state. Whether he finally survived that combat, and spent the remainder of his days in some Hotel des
Invalides, I do not know; but I thought that his industry would not be worth much thereafter. I never learned which
party was victorious, nor the cause of the war; but I felt for the rest of that day as if I had had my feelings excited
and harrowed by witnessing the struggle, the ferocity and carnage, of a human battle before my door.

Kirby and Spence tell us that the battles of ants have long been celebrated and the date of them recorded, though they
say that Huber is the only modern author who appears to have witnessed them. “Æneas Sylvius,” say they, “after giving a
very circumstantial account of one contested with great obstinacy by a great and small species on the trunk of a pear
tree,” adds that “‘This action was fought in the pontificate of Eugenius the Fourth, in the presence of Nicholas
Pistoriensis, an eminent lawyer, who related the whole history of the battle with the greatest fidelity.’ A similar
engagement between great and small ants is recorded by Olaus Magnus, in which the small ones, being victorious, are said
to have buried the bodies of their own soldiers, and left those of their giant enemies a prey to the birds. This event
happened previous to the[269] expulsion of the tyrant Christiern the Second from Sweden.” The battle which I witnessed
took place in the Presidency of Polk, five years before the passage of Webster’s Fugitive-Slave Bill.

Many a village Bose, fit only to course a mud-turtle in a victualling cellar, sported his heavy quarters in the woods,
without the knowledge of his master, and ineffectually smelled at old fox burrows and woodchucks’ holes; led perchance
by some slight cur which nimbly threaded the wood, and might still inspire a natural terror in its denizens; now far
behind his guide, barking like a canine bull toward some small squirrel which had treed itself for scrutiny, then,
cantering off, bending the bushes with his weight, imagining that he is on the track of some stray member of the jerbilla
family. Once I was surprised to see a cat walking along the stony shore of the pond, for they rarely wander so far from
home. The surprise was mutual. Nevertheless the most domestic cat, which has lain on a rug all her days, appears quite
at home in the woods, and, by her sly and stealthy behavior, proves herself more native there than the regular inhabitants.
Once, when berrying, I met with a cat with young kittens in the woods, quite wild, and they all, like their mother, had
their backs up and were fiercely spitting at me. A few years before I lived in the woods there was what was called a
“winged cat” in one of the farmhouses in Lincoln nearest the pond, Mr. Gilian Baker’s. When I called to see her in June,
1842, she was gone a-hunting in the woods, as was her wont (I am not sure whether it was a male or female, and so use
the more common pronoun), but her mistress told me that she[270] came into the neighborhood a little more than a year
before, in April, and was finally taken into their house; that she was of a dark brownish gray color, with a white spot
on her throat, and white feet, and had a large bushy tail like a fox; that in the winter the fur grew thick and flatted
out along her sides, forming strips ten or twelve inches long by two and a half wide, and under her chin like a muff, the
upper side loose, the under matted like felt, and in the spring these appendages dropped off. They gave me a pair of her
“wings,” which I keep still. There is no appearance of a membrane about them. Some thought it was part flying-squirrel or
some other wild animal, which is not impossible, for, according to naturalists, prolific hybrids have been produced by
the union of the marten and domestic cat. This would have been the right kind of cat for me to keep, if I had kept any;
for why should not a poet’s cat be winged as well as his horse?

In the fall the loon (Colymbus glacialis) came, as usual, to moult and bathe in the pond, making the woods ring with his
wild laughter before I had risen. At rumor of his arrival all the Milldam sportsmen are on the alert, in gigs and on
foot, two by two and three by three, with patent rifles and conical balls and spyglasses. They come rustling through the
woods like autumn leaves, at least ten men to one loon. Some station themselves on this side of the pond, some on that,
for the poor bird cannot be omnipresent; if he dive here he must come up there. But now the kind October wind rises,
rustling the leaves and rippling the surface of the water, so that no loon can be heard or seen, though[271] his foes
sweep the pond with spyglasses, and make the woods resound with their discharges. The waves generally rise and
dash angrily, taking sides with all waterfowl, and our sportsmen must beat a retreat to town and shop and unfinished
jobs.

But they were too often successful. When I went to get a pail of water early in the morning I frequently saw this stately
bird sailing out of my cove within a few rods. If I endeavored to overtake him in a boat, in order to see how he would
manœuvre, he would dive and be completely lost, so that I did not discover him again sometimes till the latter part of
the day. But I was more than a match for him on the surface. He commonly went off in a rain.

As I was paddling along the north shore one very calm October afternoon, for such days especially they settle on to the
lakes, like the milkweed down, having looked in vain over the pond for a loon, suddenly one, sailing out from the shore
toward the middle a few rods in front of me, set up his wild laugh and betrayed himself. I pursued with a paddle and he
dived, but when he came up I was nearer than before. He dived again, but I miscalculated the direction he would take,
and we were fifty rods apart when he came to the surface this time, for I had helped to widen the interval; and again he
laughed long and loud, and with more reason than before.

 WATCHING FOR THE LOON
He manœuvred so cunningly that I could not get within half a dozen rods of him. Each time, when he came to the surface,
turning his head this way and that, he coolly surveyed the water and the land, and apparently chose his course so that
he might come up where there was the widest expanse[272] of water, and at the greatest distance from the boat. It was
surprising how quickly he made up his mind and put his resolve into execution. He led me at once to the widest part of
the pond, and could not be driven from it. While he was thinking one thing in his brain, I was endeavoring to divine his
thought in mine. It was a pretty game,[273] played on the smooth surface of the pond, a man against a loon. Suddenly your
adversary’s checker disappears beneath the board, and the problem is to place yours nearest to where his will appear again.
Sometimes he would come up unexpectedly on the opposite side of me, having apparently passed directly under the boat. So
long-winded was he and so unweariable, that when he had swum furthest he would immediately plunge again, nevertheless; and
then no wit could divine where in the deep pond, beneath the smooth surface, he might be speeding his way like a fish, for
he had time and ability to visit the bottom of the pond in its deepest part.

It is said that loons have been caught in the New York lakes eighty feet beneath the surface, with hooks set for trout—
though Walden is deeper than that. How surprised must the fishes be to see this ungainly visitor from another sphere
speeding his way amid their schools! Yet he appeared to know his course as surely under water as on the surface, and
swam much faster there. Once or twice I saw a ripple where he approached the surface, just put his head out to reconnoitre,
and instantly dived again. I found that it was as well for me to rest on my oars and wait his reappearing as to endeavor
to calculate where he would rise; for again and again, when I was straining my eyes over the surface one way, I would
suddenly be startled by his unearthly laugh behind me. But why, after displaying so much cunning, did he invariably betray
himself the moment he came up by that loud laugh? Did not his white breast enough betray him? He was indeed a silly loon,
I thought. I could commonly[274] hear the splash of the water when he came up, and so also detected him. But after an hour
he seemed as fresh as ever, dived as willingly and swam yet further than at first. It was surprising to see how serenely
he sailed off with unruffled breast when he came to the surface, doing all the work with his webbed feet beneath. His usual
note was this demoniac laughter, yet somewhat like that of a waterfowl; but occasionally, when he had balked me most
successfully and come up a long way off, he uttered a long-drawn unearthly howl, probably more like that of a wolf than
any bird; as when a beast puts his muzzle to the ground and deliberately howls. This was his looming—perhaps the wildest
sound that is ever heard here, making the woods ring far and wide. I concluded that he laughed in derision of my efforts,
confident of his own resources. Though the sky was by this time overcast, the pond was so smooth that I could see where
he broke the surface when I did not hear him. His white breast, the stillness of the air, and the smoothness of the water
were all against him. At length, having come up fifty rods off, he uttered one of those prolonged howls, as if calling
on the god of loons to aid him, and immediately there came a wind from the east and rippled the surface, and filled the
whole air with misty rain, and I was impressed as if it were the prayer of the loon answered, and his god was angry with
me; and so I left him disappearing far away on the tumultuous surface.

Ten Politically Incorrect Truths About Human Nature

Link

Yet more evidence that the truth is remarkably un-egalitarian. No wonder Leftists had to kill so many people over the past century - human nature
simply wouldn't bend to their ideology!

1. Men like blond bombshells (and women want to look like them)

"Women's desire to look like Barbie—young with small waist, large breasts, long blond hair, and blue eyes—is a direct, realistic, and sensible response
to the desire of men to mate with women who look like her. There is evolutionary logic behind each of these features.

Men prefer young women in part because they tend to be healthier than older women. One accurate indicator of health is physical attractiveness; another
is hair. Healthy women have lustrous, shiny hair, whereas the hair of sickly people loses its luster. Because hair grows slowly, shoulder-length hair reveals
several years of a woman's health status."

2. Humans are naturally polygamous
"The history of western civilization aside, humans are naturally polygamous. Polyandry (a marriage of one woman to many men) is very rare, but polygyny
(the marriage of one man to many women) is widely practiced in human societies, even though Judeo-Christian traditions hold that monogamy is the only
natural form of marriage. We know that humans have been polygynous throughout most of history because men are taller than women.
Among primate and nonprimate species, the degree of polygyny highly correlates with the degree to which males of a species are larger than females.
The more polygynous the species, the greater the size disparity between the sexes. Typically, human males are 10 percent taller and 20 percent heavier
than females. This suggests that, throughout history, humans have been mildly polygynous."

3. Most women benefit from polygyny, while most men benefit from monogamy

"When there is resource inequality among men—the case in every human society—most women benefit from polygyny: women can share a wealthy man.
Under monogamy, they are stuck with marrying a poorer man.
The only exceptions are extremely desirable women. Under monogamy, they can monopolize the wealthiest men; under polygyny, they must share the
men with other, less desirable women. However, the situation is exactly opposite for men. Monogamy guarantees that every man can find a wife. True,
less desirable men can marry only less desirable women, but that's much better than not marrying anyone at all."

4. Most suicide bombers are Muslim
"However, polygyny itself is not a sufficient cause of suicide bombing. Societies in sub-Saharan Africa and the Caribbean are much more polygynous than
the Muslim nations in the Middle East and North Africa. And they do have very high levels of violence. Sub-Saharan Africa suffers from a long history of
continuous civil wars—but not suicide bombings.
The other key ingredient is the promise of 72 virgins waiting in heaven for any martyr in Islam. The prospect of exclusive access to virgins may not be so
appealing to anyone who has even one mate on earth, which strict monogamy virtually guarantees. However, the prospect is quite appealing to anyone
who faces the bleak reality on earth of being a complete reproductive loser."

5. Having sons reduces the likelihood of divorce
"Since a man's mate value is largely determined by his wealth, status, and power—whereas a woman's is largely determined by her youth and physical
attractiveness—the father has to make sure that his son will inherit his wealth, status, and power, regardless of how much or how little of these resources
he has. In contrast, there is relatively little that a father (or mother) can do to keep a daughter youthful or make her more physically attractive.
The continued presence of (and investment by) the father is therefore important for the son, but not as crucial for the daughter. The presence of sons thus
deters divorce and departure of the father from the family more than the presence of daughters, and this effect tends to be stronger among wealthy families."

6. Beautiful people have more daughters
"The generalized Trivers-Willard hypothesis goes beyond a family's wealth and status: If parents have any traits that they can pass on to their children and
that are better for sons than for daughters, then they will have more boys. Conversely, if parents have any traits that they can pass on to their children and
that are better for daughters, they will have more girls.

Physical attractiveness, while a universally positive quality, contributes even more to women's reproductive success than to men's. The generalized hypothesis
would therefore predict that physically attractive parents should have more daughters than sons. Once again, this is the case. Americans who are rated
"very attractive"
have a 56 percent chance of having a daughter for their first child, compared with 48 percent for everyone else."

7. What Bill Gates and Paul McCartney have in common with criminals
"Paul McCartney has not written a hit song in years, and now spends much of his time painting. Bill Gates is now a respectable businessman and philanthropist,
and is no longer a computer whiz kid. J.D. Salinger now lives as a total recluse and has not published anything in more than three decades. Orson Welles was a
mere 26 when he wrote, produced, directed, and starred in Citizen Kane.
A single theory can explain the productivity of both creative geniuses and criminals over the life course: Both crime and genius are expressions of young men's
competitive desires, whose ultimate function in the ancestral environment would have been to increase reproductive success."

8. The midlife crisis is a myth—sort of
"Many believe that men go through a midlife crisis when they are in middle age. Not quite. Many middle-aged men do go through midlife crises, but it's not because
they are middle-aged. It's because their wives are. From the evolutionary psychological perspective, a man's midlife crisis is precipitated by his wife's imminent
menopause and end of her reproductive career, and thus his renewed need to attract younger women. Accordingly, a 50-year-old man married to a 25-year-old
woman would not go through a midlife crisis, while a 25-year-old man married to a 50-year-old woman would, just like a more typical 50-year-old man married to
a 50-year-old woman. It's not his midlife that matters; it's hers. When he buys a shiny-red sports car, he's not trying to regain his youth; he's trying to attract
young women to replace his menopausal wife by trumpeting his flash and cash."

9. It's natural for politicians to risk everything for an affair (but only if they're male)
"The question many asked in 1998—"Why on earth would the most powerful man in the world jeopardize his job for an affair with a young woman?"—is, from a
Darwinian perspective, a silly one. Betzig's answer would be: "Why not?" Men strive to attain political power, consciously or unconsciously, in order to have
reproductive access to a larger number of women. Reproductive access to women is the goal, political office but one means. To ask why the President of the
 United States would
have a sexual encounter with a young woman is like asking why someone who worked very hard to earn a large sum of money would then spend it.
What distinguishes Bill Clinton is not that he had extramarital affairs while in office — others have, more will; it would be a Darwinian puzzle if they did not —
what distinguishes him is the fact that he got caught."

10. Men sexually harass women because they are not sexist
"The quid pro quo types of harassment are manifestations of men's greater desire for short-term casual sex and their willingness to use any available means to achieve
that goal. Feminists often claim that sexual harassment is "not about sex but about power;" Browne contends it is both—men using power to get sex. "To say that it
is only about power makes no more sense than saying that bank robbery is only about guns, not about money."
Sexual harassment cases of the hostile-environment variety result from sex differences in what men and women perceive as "overly sexual" or "hostile" behavior.
Many women legitimately complain that they have been subjected to abusive, intimidating, and degrading treatment by their male coworkers. Browne points out
that long before women entered the labor force, men subjected each other to such abusive, intimidating, and degrading treatment.
Abuse, intimidation, and degradation are all part of men's repertoire of tactics employed in competitive situations. In other words, men are not treating women
differently
from men—the definition of discrimination, under which sexual harassment legally falls—but the opposite: Men harass women precisely because they are not
discriminating between men and women."
