CHINA SHINING (AND CASTING A SHADOW)

Always read Leah Krauss:

Solar World: China becomes a growing force
Leah Krauss, February 22, 2007 (UPI)
- Two years after China passed a comprehensive renewable energy law, its solar energy industry is poised to enter the world market in a big way.

- "Thin film will be the future," solar energy markets expert J. Peter Lynch told United Press International, referring to an emerging type of solar technology that relies on much thinner solar panels than the traditional black panels on many rooftops today. "As more and more Chinese (thin film) companies (go) public, they will drive prices down and shrink margins."
- …The scarcity of solar-grade refined silicon has driven up traditional photovoltaic prices, and the shortage is not expected to ease until 2008.
- "I would definitely foresee (China taking a bigger role in the world solar market)," Yong X. Tao, a professor and Undergraduate Program Director in the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at Florida International University, wrote…
- "Right now, Suntech is the only significant player from China in the world solar market: its market is outside of China…" Tao said…

- One of the smaller companies has already started making international waves…China's Solarfun Power Holdings Ltd. "…will sell approximately 140 megawatts of photovoltaic modules to UB Garanty Project S.L. in Spain over the next three years. The contract is expected to have an estimated value of between $40 million and $50 million in 2007…and we are confident that Solarfun will continue to penetrate high growth (photovoltaic) markets such as Spain, Italy and other emerging markets in Europe…"
- China gets about 7 percent of its energy from renewable sources…The 2005 Renewable Energy Law called for the country to increase its renewable energy consumption to 10 percent of the total by 2020…
- "A few wise men in Chinese government listened to the scientists and made right decision to push the policy. The 2008 Olympics (slated for Beijing) is another reason," Tao said…The government "supports (solar) in many ways," Tao said…

- Not all observers agree with this positive outlook, however: "Manufacturers are expanding their capacity, but I don't see a major drive to install solar power domestically," Wang Xing, a senior program officer for electricity and renewable energy at the China Sustainable Energy Program, told the news agency AFX earlier this month.
- "Right now there is not a very strong incentive program for solar power…Most domestic manufacturers are gearing production toward the export market…"
- …Tao…says the Chinese solar domestic market, which is mostly focused on solar water heaters, is doing quite well…The 2005 law required all new smaller buildings to install solar water heaters.

Dear activists, colleagues and friends,
>From Robert Greenwald,

We have been deep in research, interviews and editing (23 versions!) about Rudy's failure to fix the radios the firemen used to communicate on 9/11. It is as

deeply troubling a story as we have seen. Rudy is running for office on how he handled 9/11 and here we have proof positive that firemen were killed because

his administration did not fix the long-standing (since 1993!) problems with the radios.

Watch the video: http://TheRealRudy.org/radios?utm_source=rgemail

This BNF investigative report calls attention to four key questions about Rudy's handling of the broken radios from firemen's families and experts:

Why was nothing done to improve FDNY radio performance for seven years after a clear need was demonstrated in the 1993 World Trade Center attack?
When new radios were finally ordered, why did the city block other companies besides Motorola from bidding on the contract?
Once Motorola was given the contract, why did its cost jump from $1.4 million to $14 million?
Why were these new radios never tested?
These questions should and must be investigated. New York City councilman Eric Gioia has the power to begin an investigation. If we can garner enough

attention and signers, we have a major opportunity to help launch an investigation. Since you live in the NYC area, it is especially important you sign and

get others in New York to sign as well. We want all signers, of course, but it will be doubly helpful, maybe even triply, if we can get a large number of New

Yorkers to sign the petition.
Sign the petition:
http://TheRealRudy.org/radios?utm_source=rgemail

Please take a careful look at your email address book and see how many people you can send this onto with a note from you. This is democracy in action and we

need each and every one of you to help.

Shows that rocked Toronto last week

ICE-T at the Phoenix Rating: NNNN

Only a few hundred fans were on hand for the rare appearance of Law & Order: SVU's Det. Fin Tutuola, but any doubts about Ice-T showing up were assuaged when

legendary DJ Evil-E stepped up. He warmed up the Phoenix with hits until Ice emerged with hair in braids, wearing an L.A. baseball cap and a T-shirt

emblazoned with guns, brass knuckles and knives.

After dropping two new joints that sounded better than you'd think, he jumped around his catalogue, thrilling the crowd with gangsta rap classics.

Ice-T dazzled with an unpredictable mix of mic mastery, raunchy stand-up, ghetto thespian expression and hyper-sexual aggression. Before one song, he

bellowed, "Who's 21 in here? Well, you were still in your daddy's nuts when this song came out. If he went to a club and stood by a speaker, this is what you

would've heard!"

Later, Ice pulled up one mega-fan sporting an OG T-shirt, hat and toque and let the awestruck acolyte perform the rapper's rhymes word for word; the dude was

so on point that Ice jokingly fired hype man Nice.

The crowd went crazy for New Jack Hustler and Colors before Ice dropped 6 'N The Mornin' and brought out his impossibly beautiful wife, Coco, to say goodbye.

Truly unforgettable.

HYPNOTIC BRASS ENSEMBLE and SAK PASÉ at Harbourfront Centre Rating: NNNN

The sight of Roland XB and Yamaha Motif 8 keyboards and turntables set up on the Harbourfront Centre main stage prior to the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble 's

Saturday set was worrisome. True, they'd just been on an overseas tour, but you'd think it'd take more than a month of exposure to synthesized Euro-cheese to

tempt the eight-strong crew away from the straight and narrow of acoustic improvisation.

After all, the Hypnotic posse are the gifted sons of spiritual jazz great Phil Cohran. Surely, the Arkestra ace raised his horn-blowing and drum-battering

kids better. He did. Well, save for allowing them to wear gauntlets that resembled altered dachshund rainwear.

The extra stage gear was for Wyclef Jean's disappointing Sak Pasé showcase that followed, but speculation about whether or not Wyclef would appear at his

label launch (he didn't) became a moot point as soon as HBE began their funky assault. Led by a four-trumpet front line backed up with flugelhorn, trombone,

sousaphone and a powerhouse drummer, they authoritatively hammered out simple grooves that kept headz nodding throughout the hour-long set.

Blasting through a relentless series of hard-pumping uptempo jams with barely time to shake the spit from their instruments, the HBE seemed much more

inspired by New Orleans crews like the Rebirth Brass Band than by any of the cosmic jazz associated with their dad – probably a good thing if they're aiming

to rock parties.

24 Dec 07 - Cassette, CD-r
Mystified - 'KrellMuse' C52
"KrellMuse is a cassette release from Mystified, an experienced multi-genre band that focuses on noisy drones and atmospherics. The Krell were an ancient

race from the film Forbidden Planet, who seemed to haunt the planet surface, and the catacombs underneath. KrellMuse asks the question-- if the Krell were to

write music for humans, how would it sound? Probably a lot like this release-- gritty, droney, and mysterious." - Thomas Park. Cover photo provided by:

Arklight - 'The Seventh Seal' CDr
"Aesthetic-less crud matrons Arklight are a sometimes duo/trio/quartet who here try to cobble together a personality from guitar improvs, electronic beats

and multi-layered recording techniques. Formed in 2003, Arklight dance along the Digital/Analog, Postmodern/Existential Divide, much as the dancers in The

Seventh Seal dance on the line between Life and Death. They Are Contradictory In Tone (T.A.C.I.T.)." - Daniel Kolm. Edition of 100

Bjerga/Iversen - 'Empire of Dirt' C41
"Bjerga/Iversen have been exploring the sound ghosts of the grey area for 3 years now. Deep studies in amplified clutter, tape hiss and the mesmerizing

nature of the psychedelic drone has resulted in close to 40 records and a bunch of gigs through Europe and the UK as well as Norway. No rest, no second

thoughts, no quality control (some might say) but always in the "now sound", always mucking about, always trying to catch that ghost..... This is a live set

from the Overtoom 301 club in Amsterdam, recorded April 6th, 2007" -Sindre Bjerga: Tapes, contact mikes, guitar, kitchen utensils -Jan-M. Iversen:

Electronics. Edition of 100

Saints - 'Umbanda' C31
"Jarringly intense noise-with-a-purpose from this Californian duo. Hold onto your butts. "Like pulling the sun with a beast drawn plow through a lush jewel

field in wet-diamond South America with Macumban's mambo bassdrum looking for a T. Rex in the moonflood. Bend down low." Edition of 100

Changeling - 'Absolutely Free' C21
"Channeling the forces of nature with his guitar, Roy Tatum creates yet another stunning piece. He graciously found some time between recording with Deep

Jew, Quintana Roo, and the Insaniacs to conjure this not-too-short but very sweet cassette. This makes for some perfect nighttime winter listening, so take

off those boots, kick back by the fire and light one up while taking it all in. You can admire Bethany Cosentino's (of Pocahaunted) awesome collage art while

you're at it." Edition of 100

Inventor plans 'invisible walls'
The inventor of an "invisibility" cloak has said that his next project will be to
develop the technology to allow people to see through walls.
Susumu Tachi, who showed off the cloak at an exhibition in San Francisco earlier
this month, said he was hopeful of providing a way to provide a view of the outside in windowless rooms.

"This technology can be used in all kinds of ways, but I wanted to create a vision
of invisibility," he told BBC World Service's Outlook programme.

"My short-term goal would be, for example, to make a room that has no outside windows
appear to have a view to the outside, then the wall would appear to be invisible."

Use and misuse

Professor Tachi's cloak works by projecting an image onto itself of what is behind the wearer.

A computer generates the image that is projected, so the viewer effectively sees "through" the cloak.

The key development of the cloak, however, was the development of a new material called retro-reflectum.
"This material allows you to see a three-dimensional image," Professor Tachi said.

"This material is the key to our technology."

There are many potential uses of the cloak, ranging from espionage and military purposes
to helping pilots see through the floor of the cockpit to the runway below.

However there are massive questions of potential misuse too, particularly surrounding the
 huge crime implications.

It would become incredibly difficult to spot a thief, for example, if the items they were
taking were simply disappearing under the cloak.

Professor Tachi said that he had first had the idea of developing something to make objects
 invisible in 1977.

But he said it was "hard to make it into reality," as the image looked flat and unrealistic.

"It didn't work at all when we just projected the image onto a normal screen," he added.

"We tried hard, but it took a while before we came up with this retro-reflective material."

Fun in the fifth dimension.

Posted by Matt

I've been spending a great deal of time on research lately. We are trying to build a realistic physics model that has no Higgs boson. As I've written about before, the Higgs is a particle in the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics that we have never actually observed in an experiment. Chances are that, if the current Fermilab experiments don't find it (or something very much like it), the next LHC experiments will. But there is always a chance that they won't.

In the case that the Higgs is not found, and nothing looking like the Higgs (what we call a "scalar boson") is found, physicists are going to have a lot of explaining to do. The conventional wisdom is that, since the approximate symmetry of nature called the "electroweak" symmetry is not exact ("broken," we call it), there must be a Higgs at the energy scale the next experiments will probe.

Well, we're putting together a model without any such scalar boson (at least, not at energies where the next experiments will see it). It's not the most aesthetically pleasing model in the world, and the chances that this exact model represents the real world are very small, but it's good to have at least one example as a sort of proof_of_concept. We can hope that the lessons we learn from it might give us a better general idea of what Higgsless models are like.

For those of you who want the details, look at the last paper of the others I am working with (Giacomo Cacciapaglia, Csaba Csaki, Christophe Grojean, and John Terning): "Curing the Ills of Higgsless Models: the S Parameter and Unitarity." As I don't want to talk too much about the details of research in progress before we have written our paper, I'll stick mostly to the outline of future work at the end of that paper. I've drawn a picture to try to get some of the idea across.

Here's a (very schematic) picture of what we're doing:

file:///C:/My%20Documents/brane1.png

I apologize for my limited skill at drawing these things on a computer, but maybe the idea will get across. In this model, we have a five_dimensional universe (four spatial dimensions, one time). The new fifth dimension is represented as the horizontal direction in this picture; you should imagine that each slice (such as any one of the parallelograms drawn in blue) has three spatial dimensions. Some of these slices are special; they are the ones shown, and are called "branes." Branes are real physical objects, that are very heavy, which lie in the extra dimension. Particles can either be stuck on a brane, or propagate through the space between branes.

In our model, some particles (the gauge bosons, which carry forces) exist across the entire five_dimensional space. The black and red lines in the picture are examples. Other particles (the fermions, which make up matter) lie between only two of the branes. The blue and green lines in the picture are examples. The green blob on the Planck brane at the end of the green line represents a "brane_localized fermion"; it is stuck on the brane, but it mixes with the bulk fermion represented by the green line, so that in some sense we see them as the same particle. The lines here represent the "wave function" of the particle in the extra dimension; roughly, places where this is peaked are places the particle is most likely to be found. For instance, the red line represents a heavy boson (what we call a "KK mode" or "Kaluza_Klein mode") that tends to be found mostly near the "TeV brane" on the right. The other particles that have fairly flat lines will be found anywhere in the fifth_dimensional space. How strongly particles interact is related to the extent to which their "wave functions" overlap in the fifth dimension. Thus, for instance, the heavy boson marked in red will not interact much with the fermion in blue, which is living in the opposite side of the middle (Planck) brane from where the red wave function is peaked. Similarly, the heavy boson in red will not interact much with the fermion marked in green, because this fermion has a large piece stuck on the brane (the green blob in the picture) and that is far away from where the red line is peaked.

The shapes of all these wave functions are determined by the boundary conditions, which specify what they do on the branes. For instance, on one brane a certain function might be constrained to be zero, which means the line is anchored in place on that brane. Alternatively, the derivative of the function might be constrained to be zero on that brane, which roughly means the line is allowed to slip around on the brane so long as it is flat there.

All of this might look rather ad hoc, but in fact the boundary conditions we have to use for the fields all come from a sensible set of rules that are based on the idea that the symmetries of the theory can be different in different places. On the Planck brane we put the usual "Standard Model" symmetries; on the TeV branes we break electroweak symmetry by boundary conditions, which thus in some sense fulfill the usual role of the Higgs boson. Other parts of the Higgs boson's role are taken over by the KK modes, which can affect the way the gauge bosons interact but which mostly do not affect the fermions, since these are localized elsewhere. Certain effects are also dependent on the size of the "bulk" that is involved, so by making the bulk on the left_hand side of the picture smaller than the one on the right, we can accomplish other important effects.

All this is necessarily very vague, and for those who want details you can consult our paper when we have finished it. I hope that to some extent this picture gives you an idea of how what we're doing works. There are all sorts of related models under discussion in which extra dimensions can have important (and sometimes surprising) effects on physics. One can either take these seriously __ that is, believe that there really are extra dimensions that are within reach of the next generation of colliders __ or take them as tools for building four_dimensional (three space, one time) models with unusual properties that one can see how to arrange in the five_dimensional picture but that are not obvious in the four_dimensional picture. This is the "effective theory" picture (again, roughly speaking; in fact "effective theory" has a pretty precise meaning).

(Is this at all comprehensible? Feedback or questions are very much welcomed. I don't want to discuss details of research on this blog until it's eventually posted on http://www.arxiv.org , but queries about extra dimensions or branes or particle physics in general are welcome.)

Inventor plans 'invisible walls' http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/3791795.stm

file:///C:/My%20Documents/_40253145_cloak203.jpg

The invisible material is made of thousands of tiny beads

The inventor of an "invisibility" cloak has said that his next project will be to develop the technology to allow people to see through walls.

Susumu Tachi, who showed off the cloak at an exhibition in San Francisco earlier this month, said he was hopeful of providing a way to provide a view of the outside in windowless rooms.

"This technology can be used in all kinds of ways, but I wanted to create a vision of invisibility," he told BBC World Service's Outlook programme.

"My short_term goal would be, for example, to make a room that has no outside windows appear to have a view to the outside, then the wall would appear to be invisible."

Use and misuse

Professor Tachi's cloak works by projecting an image onto itself of what is behind the wearer.

A computer generates the image that is projected, so the viewer effectively sees "through" the cloak.

file:///C:/My%20Documents/_40253141_pilot203.jpg

Invisibility material may allow pilots to see through the floor of their planes

The key development of the cloak, however, was the development of a new material called retro_reflectum.

"This material allows you to see a three_dimensional image," Professor Tachi said.

"This material is the key to our technology."

There are many potential uses of the cloak, ranging from espionage and military purposes to helping pilots see through the floor of the cockpit to the runway below.

However there are massive questions of potential misuse too, particularly surrounding the huge crime implications.

It would become incredibly difficult to spot a thief, for example, if the items they were taking were simply disappearing under the cloak.

Professor Tachi said that he had first had the idea of developing something to make objects invisible in 1977.

But he said it was "hard to make it into reality," as the image looked flat and unrealistic.

"It didn't work at all when we just projected the image onto a normal screen," he added.

"We tried hard, but it took a while before we came up with this retro_reflective material."

I would be perfectly happy living in a house made of plexiglas and wire with no junk or dust in sight anywhere! But that sort of place exists only in MaxWorld and Philip Johnson's head.

Scientific Wizards Find Real Cloak of Invisibility

by James Reynolds

A cloaking device that makes objects invisible is being developed by researchers, bringing the magic of Harry Potter into the world of science fact. While Harry uses his cloak of invisibility to move about Hogwarts School unseen, electronic engineers at the University of Pennsylvania are working on a real invisibility shield called a "plasmonic cover." The development, which works by preventing objects from reflecting and scattering light, could have widespread use in the military as it would be more effective than current stealth technology. Although no final product has been made, the engineers claim their proposal "does not obviously violate any of the laws of physics."

Other types of invisibility cloaks have been developed before, but these mostly use the "chameleon principle" _ colouring objects to match their background, enabling them to blend in and become camouflaged. One such system involved using light detectors and emitters that project a replica of the image appearing behind an object on to its front surface. Similarly, researchers in Tokyo are developing a camouflage fabric that uses a comparable principle where the background is projected on to light_reflecting beads in the material. Such systems are, however, dependent on the viewer from which the object is being concealed being in the right position.

A report in the journal Nature reveals that the new system is far more ambitious, being both self_contained and reducing visibility from all angles. In this sense it would be more like the shields used by the Romulans in the Star Trek episode "Balance of Terror" which hid their spaceship at the touch of a button. Dr John Pendry, a physicist at Imperial College London, said: "The concept is an interesting one. It could find uses in stealth technology and camouflage."

According to Dr Andrea Alu and Dr Nader Engheta, the engineers behind the project, the key is to reduce light scattering. Objects are visible because light bounces off them; if this can be prevented and if the objects did not reflect any light, they would become invisible. The "plasmonic screen" achieves this by resonating in tune with the illuminating light. Plasmons are created when the electrons on the surface of a metallic material move in rhythm. The developers claim a shell of this material will reduce light_scatter to the extent that an object will become invisible, if the light’s frequency is close to the resonant frequency of these plasmons. In this way, the scattering from the shell effectively cancels out the scattering from the object.

Experiments have shown that spherical or cylindrical objects coated with such shields do produce very little light scattering, which renders them nearly invisible. However, the cloak would have to be delicately tuned to suit each object it hides. Also, a specific shield may only work for one wavelength of light, rendering it invisible in, say, red light, but not in multi_wavelength daylight.

Another problem which has to be solved is that the effect would only work in daylight when the wavelength of the light being scattered is the same size as the object _ meaning only tiny things can so far be hidden.

Do I understand this correctly? There will be an empty "hole in the air" _ where you can't see what fills it but you can tell something is hiding itself? And it doesn't block bullets? And, oh yes, right now it must be smaller than a wavelength? This technology had a ways to go...

Scientists Say Dirty Bomb Would Be a Dud

The "dirty bomb'' allegedly planned by terror suspect Jose Padilla would have been a dud, not the radiological threat portrayed last week by federal authorities, scientists say.

At a June 1 news conference, the Justice Department said the alleged al_Qaida associate hoped to attack Americans by detonating ``uranium wrapped with explosives'' in order to spread radioactivity.

But uranium's extremely low radioactivity is harmless compared with high_radiation materials __ such as cesium and cobalt isotopes used in medicine and industry that experts see as potential dirty bomb fuels.

"I used a 20_pound brick of uranium as a doorstop in my office,'' American nuclear physicist Peter D. Zimmerman, of King's College in London, said to illustrate the point.

Reader Response: http://www.thefurtrapper.com/indian_smallpox.htm#Churchill

I had never heard of Ward Churchill until a reader's post stated: "...the work of Ward Churchill

http://www.thefurtrapper.com/indian_smallpox.htm#Churchill and his kind for a

true account of Indian culture and genocide. http://www.thefurtrapper.com/indian_smallpox.htm#Abstract

Here is a small part of what I have found out about Churchill:

Ward Churchill (B.S. M.S.) is a college professor at the University of Colorado. Churchill set off a frenzy in an essay praising the "gallant sacrifices" of the 9/11 hijackers. He also compared the victims of the 2001 attacks to Nazis (for more comments see, www.walterindenver.com/).

The good news is that Ward Churchill resigned Monday [2/1/05] as chairman of the University of Colorado's Ethnic Studies Department. The bad news is as a tenured professor, he cannot be fired, and he refuses to resign. Hopefully, the State of Colorado will find a way to get rid of him.

...All decent people, whether Republican or Democrat, liberal or conservative, should denounce the views of Ward Churchill. Not only are his writings outrageous and insupportable, they are at odds with the facts of history (Bill Owens, Governor of Colorado).

The American Indian Movement Grand Governing Council representing the National and International leadership of the American Indian Movement once again is vehemently and emphatically repudiating and condemning the outrageous statements made by academic literary and Indian fraud, Ward Churchill in relationship to the 9_11 tragedy in New York City that claimed thousands of innocent people’s lives.

The greatest threat to America is not from Muslim terrorists, it is from liberal college teachers

http://www.thefurtrapper.com/indian_smallpox.htm#Churchill like Ward Churchill re_writing American History.

The teaching of a revised politically_correct American History and spoon_fed, mindless idiots http://www.thefurtrapper.com/indian_smallpox.htm#liberal%20professor that regurgitate it is what will bring an end

to America's greatness. Muslim terrorists can and should be wiped out, but ideas instilled in

students minds by liberal teachers are more difficult to wipe out. The Indian belief is to: Remember the 7th generation in all you do. The decisions you make and the actions you take today will still be felt seven generations from now (Elder Legend Keeper).

All of the Muslim terrorists combined are not as much a threat to the American way of life, as the "do_gooder", hate_spewing, damn_America liberals, like Ward Churchill.

These "enlightened" liberals are the ones that will destroy the fabric of American life that most of

us cherish...not dirt_squatting Muslim terrorists.

Nut_case liberals like Ward Churchill never let facts stand in the way of their ranting.

The damage done to American history by political activists like Churchill is unbelievable.

Over half of the hits on the smallpox article are in relation to the U. S. Army giving out smallpox blankets...

a total lie made up by Ward Churchill.

Anyone with an interest in how American history is being altered by radical left_wing university activists should read the next two article on the fraudulent claims of Ward Churchill. Dr. Thomas Brown is researching the fraud and outright lies in a paper on smallpox and Indian genocide

written by Churchill in the 1990s. Dr. Brown's abstract clearly demonstrates how left_wing liberals

take a tiny seed of truth and grow it into a field of fabrication and lies. Churchill's papers shows

the extent that radical liberals go to in distorting the truth to fit a biased preconceived agenda

that appeals to activists and other radical liberals.
