- Benazir Bhutto interview with David Frost via al Jazeera and YouYube - Benazir names her suspected assassins; name list starts around 5min, 50sec. >From Wired: "Bhutto said at the time that the assassins could have come from 'a gang from the Afganistan warlord Baitullah Mehsud; or Hamza bin Laden, the son of Osama bin Laden; or the Pakistani Taliban in Islamabad, or by a group in Karachi.' "- and, when the little rightward-moving red button of the play index is almost above the "o" of YouTube (about 6min, 10sec of the total 14), Benazir says, ".
. . Omar Sheikh, the man who murdered Osama bin Laden." Some bloggers speculate that she intended to say a few more syllables in the middle in order to
convey something else.

Why People Aren't attracted to Solar Power I think that most people aren't so attracted to the idea of solar power becuse they think they won't have power when it rains. The First Problem with that thought is that solar energy still travels, even through the clouds, just not as strong!
The Second problem is that they don't realize that most solar power systems have batteries to store the energy they capture. If this information could be spread, I believe it would help people make a decision when oil runs out. Which by the way would be in at least 10 years or so. 1x1 : http://www.instructables.com/static/img/pixel.gif <http://www.instructables.com/forum/T4R4WQFFAWRI4O9/> posted by </member/Keith-Kid/> </member/Keith-Kid/>Keith-Kid </member/Keith-Kid/> on Wednesday, Jan 2 at 3:41 PM

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ http://solar-powered-cars.net/ +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ weavingthelight4.html http://www.migrations.com/weavingthelight/weavingthelight4.html (5 of 9) [1/2/2008 4:41:11 PM] Wool and Stone Stone grows to the sea like a plant, fossil fern deep within it, a heaviness of trees worn in green and burnished air sharp with the tang of tannins far in a dry place. Canyons rise and slant, their stripes flowing from the sea's drag, scrape, retreat to whorls of seashells caught in thorny places and the whorls of fingers sifting out the sand. Sea-stained, ground down to its colors, the sand lies yellow and blue, as the dawn house opens a white door to the sun's horned face. From the black lake life climbs its ladders. When we look on the canyon walls and see that they are woven from the hard bones of ancestors-- the smallest trilobite a stitch in the side of time-- we see the first spinning that is done and the last that is undone while wool like wind unwinds from the hand into striped rock and the rock dyed with juniper softens around the body like a plant. weavingthelight4.html http://www.migrations.com/weavingthelight/weavingthelight4.html (6 of 9) [1/2/2008 4:41:11 PM]

A corner of the finished weaving by Alice Nez, with two firestarters shown. These "empty field" double saddle blankets with their subtle variations of color and form evoking the land and sky as it moves from dawn to dusk, are one of the oldest styles of Dine' (Navajo) weaving. And the weavers of Black Mesa are some of the few still weaving these traditional and powerful blankets in the handspun churro wool that is seen in the first blankets woven by the Dine'. This blanket is not for sale, but others may be commissioned, and there are two currently for sale by Betty Nez, which you can see on the weavings for sale page (MBM-209, MBM-210).

Weavers Weavings Wool Jewelry Pottery Clothing Baskets Pipes & Firestarters Home Black Mesa Weavers for Life and Land™ In Memoriam Roberta Blackgoat (1918-2002) "There is a great loss on the mountains..." With deep sadness, we mourn the passing of Roberta Blackgoat, grandmother, weaver, elder, and a wise leader of great strength and courage. She succumbed to a heart attack on the evening of April 23, 2002, at the age of 84. May her soul be bound up in the bond of life, and her memory be a blessing. Roberta Blackgoat's weaving is first one purchased and sold by Black Mesa Weavers for Life and Land. Roberta Blackgoat was a woman of valor... Her legacy will live on. A weaving by Roberta Blackgoat "And this is the main point,... that we are being told to move off our land. This is our altar that we can't give up. We can't sell it, we can't buy it, we just have to take care of it and have people live in this area. And now we're being told to move off from our altar. This is why I really need it to be understood..." "There is a great loss on the mountains, ... the wildlife people are living there, and the people that fly, they live on the trees, and they all are losing their homes, and the food of the wildlife four- legged people, ... And even the water, ... the people that live in the water are struggling with all the pollution, and the sickness in the spirit of the water, and also all the human beings,

I do hope to be having a great help from all you people who are aware, by having you write to President Clinton, and also Senator McCain, and Bruce Babbitt. Please let them have their hearts to be touched" (from a letter by Roberta Blackgoat, April 14, 1999).Roberta Blackgoat, 1918-2002 (photo ©1998 Carol Snyder Halberstadt) In November 1998, a delegation of Dine' elders and leaders came to New York City to meet with United Nations officials, seeklegal counsel, and consult with others in their struggle for freedom. One afternoon, we visited the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, at Battery Park, near the ferry to the Statue of Liberty. Roberta Blackgoat is shown here in the museum wearing a buffalo robe for a few minutes. There were once buffalo in Dine' Bike'yah (Navajo Land). Customer Review http://www.amazon.com/review/R2Y9IIAVA682BB/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm/ 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful: WISER THAN 1984, MORE REALISTIC, May 16, 2005 By Denis Benchimol Minev
In Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury wrote an absolute classic on the subject of human freedom and censorship. The outstanding characteristic of this little book (I was done in 2 days) is that it does not rely on an opposive state (as does 1984), but rather on a society that chooses to distance itself from books.
The basic irony in the story is that, after houses were made fireproof sometime in the future, there was no more job for the firemen. As society sought to occupy such spare capacity, it chose to eliminate books, as they constituted a hazard. To me, the most outstading part of the book is Bradbury's description of how man turned away from knowledge, starting with minorities feeling oppressed by those who "knew more". In order to achieve happiness, society had to eliminate the feeling of inferiority some people had, and such inferiority was largely linked to books.
The most interesting point, however, is that this book was not rendered false by time; the future depicted is quite similar to one we see today in the world and in the U.S. We have people who are not knowledgeable about an ongoing war, despite being aware of it; there are people outside the country who hate us, but we don't really know why (remind you of anything?); there is a growing sense that we are not free to express our views in fear of offending someone; and lastly, TV and instant gratification is suplanting the need to know and deeply understand the world and who we are.
In the book, it took a young girl and an old professor to awaken our hero, Guy Montag. Though we are not yet burning books, it seems like the general direction was correct. I highly recommend this book; to me, the best test is the fact that, after reading it, I really wished I had written it. http://www.amazon.com/review/R2Y9IIAVA682BB/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm/ +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Cathy Berberian: Revolution (click picture to magnify) Beatles songs go baroque! An operatic first! Eventually, record producers realized that it's a bad idea to make entire albums of Beatles songs done in some unique or perculiar non-rock style. Unfortunately, that seminal moment did not occur until some time after opera singer Cathy Berberian recorded this unbelievable LP.
The liner notes on "Revolution" (a Beatle song that Cathy doesn't actually perform on it) start off rather tongue-in-cheek, asking "Who are they kidding? Is this another put-on, some sort of musical joke?" The notes quicky go on to assure the reader that it is not, but one listen to the music on this album and you won't know what else to make of it. Opera. The Beatles. Error. Error.
Call your friends over. Place your jaw squarely in the open position. Drop the needle on Revolution, and prepare to be amazed.

______________________
Cathy Berberian (Attleboro, Massachusetts, July 4 1925 - Rome, Italy, March 6 1983) was a composer, mezzo-soprano singer, and vocalist. From 1950 to 1966 she was married to Composer Luciano Berio, who deconstructed her voice in Thema (Omaggio a Joyce) (1958) and wrote his Circles (1960) and Recital I (for Cathy) (1972) for her. In addition, she worked in close collaboration with Sylvano Bussotti, John Cage, Hans Werner Henze and Igor Stravinsky.
She interpreted contemporary avant-garde music, Armenian Folk Songs, Monteverdi, The BEATLEs, and her own compositions. Her best known work is her Stripsody (1966), in which she exploits her vocal technique using comic book sounds. Above all, she is a trivial pursuit question for classic Rock fan baby boomers:
who is Cathy Berberian in the Steely Dan song “Your Gold Teeth” from the 1973 album Countdown To Ecstasy: “Even Cathy Berberian knows/There’s one roulade she can’t sing.”

3 An hommage to the extraordinary Cathy Berberian, who left us on March 6, 1983. "Nothing about Cathy could hide unnoticed, appear in muted pastels, or be restricted to the palette between pianissimo and mezzo piano.
She was a wonderful, fun person, and always seemed to be larger than life. Everything about her was stunning and different. Her beauty was more arresting and fascinating than classical, and from the moment she walked into a room, or onto a stage, her charisma shone like a beacon." (Jennifer I. US-Mexican Border Security: Civil-Military Cooperation by Graham H. Turbiville, Jr. Foreign Military Studies Office, Fort Leavenworth, KS.
This article appeared in
Military Review
July-August 1999
An increasing US and Mexican focus on border security issues is changing the structure, employment and deployment of law enforcement and military establishments on both sides. This article considers the continuing debate surrounding US military support to border law enforcement, focusing most directly on little-examined changes in Mexican policing and military assistance along the border that have brought US and Mexican forces into closer proximity and fostered varying levels of cooperation and uncertainty. Before looking at Mexican military and police interaction and their border presence specifically, it is instructive to briefly review analogous US developments and address how the evolving border security environment shapes law enforcement.
Border Policing and the US Military
The US Border Patrol celebrated its 75th Anniversary on 28 May 1999.1 This old and distinguished federal law enforcement organization performs an increasingly demanding and complex mission—preventing the smuggling and unlawful entry of undocumented aliens into the United States, apprehending immigration law violators and serving as the primary agency responsible for drug and contraband interdiction between ports of entry. These challenges exist in all of the Border Patrol's 22 US and Puerto Rican sectors, but the 2,000 miles of shared border with Mexico remain the most critical, most publicly visible, most dangerous and the most rapidly evolving. This is reflected not only in high rates of illegal immigration, but in mounting cross-border violence, internationalized drug, arms, and alien smuggling and fundamental changes in the border environment itself.

while society at large make no perquisites or “guide posts” for a marginal child’s “successful life, nor should it provide or seek to develop systemized requirements for aggregate social benefit to individuals over others less stressed but the vagaries of haplessness and extreme marginality it would seem it is clear that there may be some "positive" outcome in the application of alternative and aberrant behavioral methodologies given the success of Madonna and pathological rhetorical sub cultural manifestations which although marginal are widely preceded as “safe choices” for cultural templets of acceptable standards and practical or pragmatic paradigms.

Studies show the teen criminals of tomorrow are "literally being manufactured, programmed, hardwired to behave in a certain way."… Young lawbreakers are at high risk of turning into what conservatives like to call the "superpredators" of tomorrow.… By getting arrested at 6 or 7, some say, these kids are sounding an alarm on the teen thugs they may become.
An estimated 110,000 children under 13 [were] arrested in 1994 for acts considered felonies…including 39 murders, federal statistics show.… New research shows that children arrested before the age of 12 are likely to have had histories of abuse and neglect and are more likely to go on to commit more numerous and more serious crimes than children first arrested as teenagers.
[1]
Physical abuse is indeed a risk factor for later aggressive behavior even when the other ecological and biological factors are known.…
Abused children tend to acquire deviant patterns of processing social information, and these may mediate the development of aggressive behavior.
[2]
In her 1992 work, "The Cycle of Violence," Cathy Spatz Widom compared children born in the same hospitals and living in the same communities and found that those who were abused or neglected were significantly more likely to be arrested for violent crimes than their better raised peers. "The new data is so hard to ignore," said Widom, a professor of criminal justice and psychology at the University of Albany in New York. "We now know that abused and neglected kids are at demonstrably increased risk for these problems. And we need to intervene."…
In Sacramento County, half of the 132 arrested kids ages 9 through 12 had been the subject of reports of abuse or neglect. In Minneapolis, where the children studied were younger, child welfare workers had investigated families of 81 percent of the children.
[3]
Many of the children who are brutalized and battered in this country never come to the attention of protection agencies at all.
[4] Many people are reluctant to report maltreatment of adolescents to child protective services. Adolescents are also frequently perceived as being responsible for their own abuse. Reported abuse is more likely to involve adolescent girls than adolescent boys, especially cases of sexual abuse.
[5]
[More than 25% of US children are sexually abused, and fewer than 10% of cases are reported to authorities.] Juveniles who commit sex crimes on other children are often victims themselves.
[6]
Experts say children who have been sexually abused for years accept it as "normal," and often will repeat the behavior in situations other than the home.
[7]
Teenagers who kill are often social outcasts who believe murder will give them the superiority they haven't achieved at home or in school, a noted criminologist said.… "A lot of the kids who are the most dangerous are marginal youngsters, not doing well with their families and not doing well in school," [Jack] Levin, [director of the Program for the Study of Violence at Northeastern University in Boston,]
said.…
"Really, the problem here is adults have to get back into the business of raising teenagers, of caring about teens," Levin said. "We need to find some healthy alternatives for our children."
