The Story of Bottled Water, released on March 22, 2010 (World Water Day) employs the Story of Stuff style to tell the story of manufactured demand—
how you get Americans to buy more than half a billion bottles of water every week when it already flows from the tap. Over five minutes, the film explores
the bottled water industrys attacks on tap water and its use of seductive, environmental-themed advertising to cover up the mountains of plastic waste
it produces. The film concludes with a call to take back the tap, not only by making a personal commitment to avoid bottled water, but by supporting
investments in clean, available tap water for all.

An Island of Plastic in the Pacific

My attention was drawn to the issue of an Island of Plastic in the Pacific a few weeks ago. I have to admit that I was not
aware of the immensity of this problem before this. Have I been this blind?

‘The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, also described as the Eastern Garbage Patch or the Pacific Trash Vortex, is a gyre of
marine litter in the central North Pacific Ocean located roughly between 135° to 155°W and 35° to 42°N and estimated to be
twice the size of Texas.’ Wikipedia

Being a lover of any coastline and having spent a lot of time on various beaches around the world why should I be so
surprized by this. My attention has long been drawn to the rubbish that is washed up on the shores of our beaches but to
think there might actually be an Island floating in the ocean had not entered into my consciousness. To say I was amazed
was indeed an understatement.

Riding on the London Underground yesterday I was reminded of the ‘floating Island’ from an article written in one of the free
London newspapers – The Metro, November 25th 2009, article by Lindsey Hoshaw. The ‘gyre’ is an area of heavy currents
and slack winds that keep the rubbish trapped in an enormous whirlpool. Now try not to imagine an Island with boundries
that you can walk on, after all the ocean is a fluid medium and apparantly most pieces are not much bigger than a grain of
rice although shoe soles, plastic buckets, patio chairs etc. are also visible. It seems that most items have been washed out
to sea from storm drains, while the rest is made up from fishing gear abandoned in the ocean.

The toxins leached out of the plastic are being ingested by fish and birds and of course we are
further down the food chain also then absorbing these toxins indirectly

The problem is indeed a huge one in the scheme of things. The wild life that thrives on the plankton in the area is ingesting
the plastic and contaminating the stomach space that should be used for food for chicks. Turtles are choking on plastic bags.
Sea Turtles are amazingly beautiful creatures and I wasn’t aware, until I read the Metro article, that they are responsible for
helping to keep tropical beaches free of deadly box jellyfish which are toxic to humans but the Turtles are unaffected by their
sting.

So for those of us who love to visit tropical beaches and swim in the warm ocean currents please think of this the next time
you go to the grocery store and forget your reusable non-plastic bag.

Unblock UserWhether or not it is cost effective is not the issue here. The fact is that it could reduce our
dependence on foreign oil. Recycling itself is not cost effective yet alot of people do it. If you were to
take the space that landfills currently take up im pretty sure that you would not only be helping the
environment by reducing pollution but that would give alot more room for crops or building of any sort.
I believe that in the long run its much more cost? effective that some may realize.

The world biggest garbage dump is a floating one and has twice the size of the USA.

Go to your nearest supermarket and look around. ALL the products on the shelves will be consumed and the plastic bottles
or packages or wrappers they were in will be thrown away and will be ALL garbage... Isn't this sad? Why not try better at
recycling? And also, why not make re-fillable containers at your grocery store that you would visit and refill your glass bottle
with? We are killing everything in the planet and none really cares except of how to have fun and make profit! Way to go!

Unblock UserThey should sell reusable containers and sell food items out of a bin. If you put your food item in a containers
as opposed to a bag offered at the store, you get a small deduction in the plastic bag you're not using for the recyclable
container. I'll sacrifice flashy packaging if it keeps more of this shit from happening.

@Alxscode all our council rubbish bins here(australia) have different coloured lids red-rubbish yellow-recyclables(plastic
bottles cardboard boxes) green- garden mulch,grass,vegetation. we are not allowed 2 put plastic bags in the yellow bins.
that defeats the purpose of fully recycling plastic ! it's the plastic bags that end up in the ocean. there should be a bin 4 plastic bags.

I totally agree with this notion & I try to avoid unnecessary plastic package & wrapping where I can. Sadly enough, even
though I eat fresh food as much as I can & also waste separation is a rather big issue here, avoiding garbage isn't possible
quite as much as I would like, so I still end up with a fair monthly amount of it & I really hate it. This world has become much
too concerned with numbing itself in fake comfort that slowly adds up & then will bite back hard one da

3. I guess we are a little dorkey wasting our global resources on asking "why?" not "what!".

backwards people who are distrustful of science are the reasons world hunger exists. Unfortunately, these elements
exist in one form or another in both advanced and developing countries.

a supernova eruption, we need to travel light years away from our solar system to to escape this explosion. We have way
to travel that far, that fast, and carry 7 billion + people, we have no way to even study planets that far let alone travel there

@Arteolike The sun will go nova in what? 400 Billion years? To me thats fairly enough time to figure out how to get off/out of this solar
system. But i think it is more likely that there will be wars because of food/energie/raw material shortage... And while reading your comment...

@zn4rf Look, the world will end one day or another, get over it and sleep in peace. Once the sun goes boom, it will become a supernova
eruption, we need to travel light years away from our solar system to to escape this explosion. We have way to travel that far, that fast,
and carry 7 billion + people, we have no way to even study planets that far let alone travel there and start another "earth"
