www.shakespeare-online.com/ettubrute.html - “What the court upheld is an adequacy decision, not just an equity decision,” said Michael Rebell of the Campaign for Fiscal Equity. “And what they said is every kid is entitled to the amount of money they need to get a meaningful high school education.”
At issue is what constitutes a “sound, basic education,” as mandated by the state constitution. The original judge
ruled city students were not getting enough resources, but the appeals court ruled the state only needs to provide an
eighth grade education to enable citizens to vote and sit on juries.
“I don’t know how we could look in mirror and say aneighth grade education is good enough,” said Mayor Michael Bloomberg. “We can't shortchange kids. The state can't shortchange us.”
The state Legislature now has 13 months to develop a plan that's fair for the city's kids. If it's unable to by July 30 of next year, the court will step in and take the issue into its own hands.

Parents Say Ruling Long Overdue
JUNE 26TH, 2003
On the last day of school Thursday, there was one more thing for children to celebrate. In the following
story, NY1's Ruschell West has reaction to the court ruling on school funding from one of the most
overcrowded schools in the city.
It's the end of the school year.
But that's not the only reason for New York City public
school kids to be happy. Thursday, the state's highest
court said the state must do a lot more for city
schools.
“Students should be able to learn about the things
they want to learn,” said Sharnam Ahmed, a student
“and the governor should put more money so the
public school teachers could teach the children.”
The Court of Appeals couldn't put it any better. It ruled
the state's school funding formula shortchanges city
students, something parents have believed for a long
time.
“It is not fair,” said Sunil Kumar, a parent. “It is not fair
at all.”
As word of the ruling started to spread among the
parents picking up their children at P.S. 11 in
Woodside, some couldn't help expressing their anger
at the current system.
“It does make me very angry because it's not fair,” said
Kariben Pena, a parent. “It shouldn't be that way.”
“It is harder for the parents if they have less funding for
the school,” said lsng Dolme, another parent.
The decision could have a great impact on schools
P.S. 11, which is one of the most overcrowded in the
city.
“The teachers here work very, very hard to educate the
students,” said Jeanne Alvarado, a parent. “The
classrooms are overcrowded and there's just not
enough.”
While the court is ordering the state Legislature and
the governor to change the system, parents said it's
the governor they're going to be watching most closely
to see if he comes up with a fair solution.
“I would like to see the governor put more effort into the
education system to put back the after-school
programs that runs here and basically understand the
needs of the children,” Alvarado said.
The court is giving Albany a year to get its act in order.

JUNE 27TH, 2003
The state Court of Appeals ruled Thursday that the
state is not adequately educating New York City’s 1.1
million school children.
In a 4-1 decision, the justices upheld a 2001 ruling by
a state Supreme Court judge who said the state's
education funding system shortchanges the mostly
minority population in city schools, who have the most
need and the highest costs but receive the lowest
per-student funding in the state. That decision was
overturned by a state appeals court last year.
The court has now given legislators one year to revamp
the way education money is divided.
“This is a victory for all New Yorkers,” said City
Councilman Robert Jackson, who started the fight in
1991 as a parent leader in Washington Heights. “No
matter where you are no matter whether you are in
public school or private school. It sets the minimum
standards for everyone.”
"It recognizes the high costs that are associated with
doing business in the city and says those children are
entitled to an education that is comparable to other
children around the state,” said Assembly Speaker
Sheldon Silver. “We have to figure out how to get the
necessary resources to make sure that that happens."
Governor George Pataki said lawmakers have been
working for a long time to ensure the system is fair.
“This lawsuit began long before I was the governor,
when New York City was shortchanged and wasn’t
getting an adequate percentage of resources,” said
Pataki. “We worked very hard to change that, and we'll
continue to work hard to change it."
The governor has maintained the issue should be left to
the state to resolve, not the courts. But under the
ruling, the court ordered the state legislature to:
determine the actual cost of a high school education
in New York City;
provide the resources to provide that education and
hold the state accountable;
create a system to ensure the funds are used
properly, or face court intervention.
The Campaign for Fiscal Equity sued the state in 2001,seeking a complete overhaul of its education budget.
The suit, which was backed by the city, claimed one-third of the city's elementary students are
functionally illiterate, and 40 percent of ninth graders never graduate.
Et tu , Mayor Michael Bloomberg
The state & Governor (Talaban) Pataki argued the city already gets more money than most districts nationwide, and that the state constitution requires only that children get a "minimally adequate" education. He thinks an 8th. grade education is good enough for Blacks"..

Noam Chomsky Imperial Grand Strategy http://www.stagevu.com/video/tzwccbaafafd In "Imperial Grand Strategy," a lecture given at the University of Manchester, Chomsky takes on the war in Iraq. He cuts through the ideological fog that surrounds the invasion and occupation, laying waste to the U.S. government's justifications for them. In the process, he uncovers the real motivations behind U.S. military aggression: a global imperial plan put in place long before Iraq—and that will extend far into the future, unless we do something about it.

THIS IS HOW YOU FIX CONGRESS. A friend sent this along to me. I can't think of a reason to disagree. I am sending this to virtually everybody on my e-mail list and that includes conservatives, liberals, and everybody in between. Even though we disagree on a number of issues, I count all of you as friends. My friend and neighbor wants to promote a "Congressional Reform Act of 2010." It would contain eight provisions, all of which would probably be strongly endorsed by those who drafted the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
I know many of you will say "this is impossible." Let me remind you, Congress has the lowest approval rating of any entity in Government. Now is the time when Americans will join together to reform Congress - the entity that represents us.
We need to get a Senator to introduce this bill in the US Senate and a Representative to introduce a similar bill in the US House. These people will become American heroes.
********************************** Congressional Reform Act of 2010
1. Term Limits.
12 years only, one of the possible options below..
A. Two Six-year Senate terms B. Six Two-year House terms C. One Six-year Senate term and three Two-Year House terms
2. No Tenure / No Pension.
A Congressman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they are out of office.
3. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social Security.
All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system, and Congress participates with the American people.
4. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans do.
5. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.
6. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people.
7. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American people.
8. All contracts with past and present Congressmen are void effective 1/1/11.
The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen. Congressmen made all these contracts for themselves.
Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, serve your term(s), then go home and back to work. If you agree with the above, pass it on.
If each person contacts a minimum of twenty people then it will only take three days for most people (in the U.S. ) to receive the message. Maybe it is time.

adbusters_occupy-wall-street.jpg Occupy Wall Street is starting to look less like an extended camping trip (kind of): It now has a mailing address, an info line, and it will soon have its own newspaper. The Occupy Wall Street Journal has surpassed its $12,000 fundraising goal on Kickstarter and looks like it might actually be a reality. Now, the protesters will have basically everything they need apart from, like, houses. The project's description:
We want to be the people's media. Our first project is The Occupy Wall Street Journal, a four-page broadsheet newspaper with an ambitious print run of 50,000. It's aimed at the general public. The idea is to explain what the protest is about and profile different people who have joined and why they joined. We will explain the issues involved and how the general assembly process operates at Liberty Plaza. It will also offer resources and ways to join. The emphasis will be on quality content, design, photography and artwork that uses incisive humor to make it a lively read.
Most people are reporting that this is the work of the Yes Men, but a Yes Men rep told us that "we are not behind it, but we are 'backing' it on our Kickstarter channel."
Jed Brandt, a communist writer, is credited on the Kickstarter as head of the Journal. We haven't yet been able to reach him for comment.
Now that the project has raised over $18,000, it looks like at least the first two issues will run. That is, if Mayor Bloomberg allows the occupation to continue.

Bloomberg: Black Parents Fail Their Kids A A A Comments (17) By Nat Hentoff Wednesday, Jun 29 2011
With his usual glowing self-assurance, multi-term mayor Michael Bloomberg continually proclaims that his administration will be judged by his performance as our Education Mayor. But here is the people’s judgment in a recent Quinnipiac poll reported by Michael Goodwin (New York Post, June 1): “By a whopping 64 to 25 percent, voters don’t like Bloomy’s management of the schools. Among parents, only 20 percent approve, while 78 percent disapprove.”
This is a largely racially segregated school system in all five boroughs. In certain neighborhoods where Ray Kelly’s stop-and-frisk police are all too familiar, parents would not have been surprised to hear from the Education Mayor himself what he thinks of them on his weekly WOR interview: “Unfortunately, there are some parents who...never had a formal education, and they don’t understand the value of an education. Many of our kids come from [such] families—the old Norman Rockwell family is gone” (New York Times, May 21).
I waited for a stinging response to that old-fashioned racial stereotyping that would have outraged integrationist artist Norman Rockwell. None came from faithful Bloomberg schools chancellor Dennis Walcott or from the lordly panjandrum, Reverend Sharpton. But a considerable number of black parents responded angrily.
Zakiyah Ansari, an organizer for the Alliance for Quality Education, whose members are outside the mayor’s social circle, let him have it: “How dare he, and how disrespectful of him to think we don’t have the brain power—whether we have a PhD or an eighth-grade education—to know what we want for our children?” (Daily News, May 21).
Bloomberg’s icy ignorance reminded me of a New York City Board of Education meeting I covered for the Voice in the early 1960s. After listening to a parade of education experts, a black parent rose from the audience. I learned from him later that he’d been a school dropout in the South and after coming North, following a string of menial jobs, he was earning about $90 a week in a dead-end factory job.
As I wrote in Does Anybody Give a Damn? Nat Hentoff on Education (Knopf, 1977), this father, so focused on his child—who was falling farther back every year in our school system—roared at the members of the Board of Education: “You people operate a goddamn monopoly, like the telephone company. I got no choice where I send my child to school. I can only send her where it’s free. And she’s not learning. When you fail, when everybody fails my child, what happens? Nothing.”
But now, there is choice. Not all charter schools would have satisfied this father and his child, but some do enable kids to learn that they can learn— and want to learn more.
The Education mayor should visit the homes of some of these black and Latino parents in Harlem and East Harlem who are so fiercely intent on getting their kids into certain charter schools. They may or may not have had a formal education, but they sure as hell know the value of an education and they rage at an Education Mayor bragging about a school system where—as they read in newspapers more often in the tabloids: “The city’s graduation rate continues to improve, but a woeful number of students finishing high school are not adequately prepared for college…At City of New York community colleges, 74 percent of students last fall required extra help before starting college-level work” (Daily News, June 14).
You don’t have to be a black or Latino parent to be repelled by a mayor who believes—he said it himself—that low-income parents who never had a formal education don’t understand the lifelong value of an education that enlarges and deepens a child’s whole life.
I don’t know any billionaires, but I doubt that any could match the chutzpah of the one we have at City Hall when we said of the “improved” graduation rates: “No one could have predicted in their wildest dreams that we would be this successful” (New York Times, June 15).
The nightmare for many parents (“Got My Dumb-Ploma,” Daily News, June 15) is that while “the city’s graduation rate rose slightly, only one of five kids in the Class of 2010 was ready for college, state Education Department officials said yesterday.”
Bloomberg never mentions that he presides over a racially segregated school system and that “the racial gap” in achievement is glaringly evident “in the college-ready graduation rate…with just 12 percent of black students graduating ready for the next step compared with 41 percent of white” (emphasis added).
Returning to confront the celebrating mayor is Zakiyah Ansari of the NYC Coalition for Educational Justice: “It’s like watching a bad accident coming in slow motion, but instead of preparing for the accident, the city is turning their eyes” (Daily News, June 15).
Do you dare, Chancellor Walcott, to demand that Bloomberg open his eyes? New York State Chancellor Merryl Tisch does see clearly that this mayor’s control of education will diminish the lives of many of our new generation in his schools: “Today’s data makes clear that we have tremendous work to do to reduce the drop-out rate, close a stubbornly persistent racial gap and ensure that more of our graduates are prepared for college and the work force” (Daily News, June 15). PREJUDICES AGAINST OTHER CULTURES and people have existed for a long
time and continue to exist. They are mostly based on ignorance. Some prejudices are
innocent, but others are vicious. They can lead to oppression and persecution.
Few groups in history have encountered more prejudice than the Jews. In Europe, the
hatred of Jews has its origins in Christianity, a religion rooted in Judaism. Forcenturies,
the Jews were the only religious minority in Christian Europe, often misunderstood and
eyed with suspicion by the population, suppressed by the Church and exploited by the
rulers. Religious intolerance led to discrimination and isolation. A climate developed in
which many legends and myths about Jews and Judaism seemed credible. Some are
still believed today. But despite of persecution and discrimination, Jewish communities
kept their religious, their social and cultural traditions alive.
This exhibition depicts the history of anti-Jewish attitudes -- and of anti-Semitism today,
a form of intolerance that in our century caused the death of millions of people. The
exhibition also portrays the history of Jews in Europe and in Russia to help understand
their life, religion and culture. But above all, the exhibition wants to warn of the great
dangers of prejudice and intolerance, particularly in times of political uncertainty and

The Jewish people were silent during the early 1920's when anti-Semitism
was spawned by Henry Ford in his Dearborn Independent newspaper.
Ford's articles inspired a young Adolf Hitler and helped pave the road to
the Holocaust.
A compilation of Ford's articles was later published in book form, and to
this day The International Jew - The World's Foremost Problem continues
to inculcate hatred of Jews.
