Not to be confused with Etymology, the study of the history of words. Entomology, from the Greek: entomo-/e?t?µ?- "that which is cut in pieces or engraved/segmented", hence "insect"; and logos/?????, "knowledge",[1] is the scientific study of insects. At some 1.3 million described species, insects account for more than 2/3rds of all known organisms,[2]dating back some 400 million years, and have many kinds of interactions with humans and other forms of life on earth, so it is an important specialty within biology. Though technically incorrect, the definition is sometimes widened to include the study of terrestrial animals in other arthropod groups or other phyla, such as arachnids, myriapods, earthworms, and slugs.
Like several of the other fields that are categorized within zoology, entomology is a taxon-based category; any form of scientific study in which the organisms studied happen to be insects is, by definition, entomology. Entomology therefore includes a cross-section of topics as diverse as molecular genetics, behavior, biomechanics, biochemistry, systematics, physiology, developmental biology, ecology, morphology, paleontology, anthropology, robotics, agriculture, nutrition, and
more.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Etymology "Etymologies" redirects here. For the literary works by Isidore of Seville and J. R. R. Tolkien, see Etymologiae and The
Etymologies (Tolkien) respectively. Not to be confused with Entomology, the scientific study of insects, despite similar etymology. Etymology is the study of the history of words — when they entered a language, from what source, and how their form and meaning have changed over time.
In languages with a long written history, etymology makes use of philology, the study of how words change from culture to culture over time. However, etymologists also apply the methods of comparative linguistics to reconstruct information about languages that are too old for any direct information (such as writing) to be known. By analyzing related languages with a technique known as the comparative method, linguists can make inferences about their shared parent language and its vocabulary. In this way, word roots have been found which can be traced all the way back to the origin of, for instance, the
Indo-European language family.
Even though etymological research originally grew from the philological tradition, nowadays much etymological research is done in language families where little or no early documentation is available, such as Uralic and Austronesian.
