Carol Rutz was one of the *child* victims of the MKULTRA and related government
"behaviour modification" programs. While A Nation Betrayed does contain her
first-person story, a prospective reader should not assume it is just a testimonial.
By comparison with another top-notch source book on the MKULTRA atrocities, Search
for the Manchurian Candidate by John Marks, you could say that Manchurian Candidate
is a good image, while Carol's book is a much sharper image of the MKULTRA atrocities.
Carol's research is at least as extensive as Marks'. Carol Rutz provides some
testimonial but the testimonial is supported by a very substantial framework of well
documented facts.

The main uses of this book for psycho-electronic experimentees are:

to provide the experimentee with historical knowledge which can defeat the excuse,
used by police and psychiatrists, that anyone who thinks government harasses citizens
needs psychiatric treatment
to provide the experimentee with historical precedent for public education efforts
This book shows clearly that morally bankrupt people in positions of authority are
not particularly rare, and the moral bankruptcy extends even to torturing children.

The book is organized into these sections:

The large amount of factual material makes this book very handy.
I wholeheartedly recommend that psycho-electronic experimentees
obtain a copy of this book for use as a "pocket" or "handbag"
reference for use when discussing mind control. I can tell you
from personal experience while picketing that this book is a very
powerful weapon on the side of truth and justice.

Paul Schrader's brilliant study of another alienated urban denizen skirting the borderline
of madness stars Willem Dafoe as John Le Tour, a rich, upscale drug dealer for Manhattan
professionals -- "White drugs for white people," as he puts it. John is a recovering addict
and for him it's the perfect job, as he can relate completely with the self-absorbed
eccentrics he services. But when his boss Ann (Susan Sarandon) tells John that she is
planning to abandon the drug business for herbal cosmetics, John's life is thrown into
disarray.

With no future plans, he sees black clouds heading his way.

Coincidentally, he runs into Marianne (Dana Delany), an old girlfriend and former addict who
has returned to New York to be with her dying mother. John sees Marianne as his redemption
and starts to pursue her, but she doesn't want to be reminded of her past.

When the murder of an Upper West Side woman involved in a drug transaction has the police
scouring the town for suspects, John thinks they are following him, and the strain upon his
life and his hopes for the future

Society needs more energy, not less. Conservation is conservative. A progressive society will not limit its industrial output but let rip, just as soviet Russia set out to increase production with its Five Year Plans...

Provoked? That's the intention of an art exhibition at London's Rokeby Gallery called Fusion Now! More Light, More Power, More People. Its curator JJ Charlesworth wonders "what art and society would be like if we thought positively about a world based on more energy, not less."

Before you dismiss this as a cranky marginal enterprise you may like to know that two previous Turner nominees, Mark Titchner and Liam Gillick , are involved. The outstanding sculptor Roger Hiorns exhibits a huge light bulb that uses lots of power, covered in semen to emphasise its image of joyous waste.

I think this is a great idea (the exhibition, not wanking on light bulbs). Art that claims to be "political" is mostly complacent and irrelevant. Since 9/11 artists have felt the weight of politics. But who exactly did Mark Wallinger challenge by recreating an anti-war protest in Tate Britain? His supposedly brave art work expressed sentiments shared by everyone from the Archbishop of Canterbury to Simon Jenkins.

But an exhibition that champions nuclear energy and rejects environmentalist cliches really is brave. More to the point, it's turning art into a goad of debate and thought, rather than mere ideological decor. And this is also an excellent exhibition in its own right, with some terrific work - Mark Titchner's pulsing evocation of energy and chaos reminded me how badly last year's Turner prize judges screwed up. There is a truly tremendous entropic orgy of art historical and pop-cultural quotations - Doctor Who meets the Laocoön - by John Russell. And to pour on the free thought, John Latham's work God is Great appears to have been included just for its provocative qualities.

Good on Charlesworth for trying to cut through the glib stylishness of Britain's art cult to insist that art is about ideas. Of course, it would be tempting to undermine his efforts by stressing the exhibition is just flirting with intellectual darkness. But I'd rather ask, in its daring spirit, if there isn't a real paradox in the current consensus that left wing politics is green politics. You won't end poverty if you hold back the industrialisation of poor countries. A society that truly limits consumption and husbands its energy is going to be a more cautious society. And that means - by definition - more conservative. Is that what you want?

The discovery was announced two years ago amid fanfare and to the astonishment of the art world: a dusty batch of 32 previously unknown Jackson Pollocks had been found in a Long Island storage locker dating from the important period of his early drip paintings, 1946 to 1949.
But a question mark now hangs over the paintings after a forensic scientist, who specialises in the authenticity of artworks, reported this week that several of the items contained pigments that had not been created at the time of the artist's death in 1956.

New Orleans - A Louisiana teen-ager who spent more than nine months behind bars in connection with the "Jena Six" case is back in jail to complete his sentence in an earlier juvenile case, an official said on Friday.

Mychal Bell, 17, was taken into custody on Thursday night, said LaSalle Parish District Attorney J. Reed Walters.

He was given an 18-month sentence in a juvenile detention facility, according to the Alexandria, Louisiana, Town Talk newspaper.

Walters said Bell's sentence in juvenile court was postponed after he and five other black teen-agers were charged with attacking a white Jena, Louisiana, high school classmate in December 2006 after months of racially charged incidents in the central Louisiana town of 3,000.

"As I earlier pointed out, Mychal Bell had four dispositions, as they are known in Louisiana juvenile court, before the so-called Jena Six case occurred," Walters said in a statement.

Walters declined further comment on Bell's incarceration because juvenile cases are not public record under Louisiana law, as in most US states.

The Jena Six case drew national attention when Bell and four others were charged as adults with attempted murder. Another youth was too young to be charged as an adult.

Bell was convicted of a lesser assault charge, which was later overturned on appeal.

Tens of thousands of marchers including the Rev. Al Sharpton and the Rev. Jesse Jackson descended on Jena last month to protest what many said was excessive punishment of Bell.

He was released on $45,000 bail on September 27.

Two of Bell's attorneys, Carol Powell Lexing and Louis Scott, did not return calls on Friday.

In a statement, Sharpton said Bell's incarceration on Thursday was "cruel and unusual punishment and is a revenge by (district court judge J.P. Mauffray) for the Jena Six movement."

Racial tension at Jena High School had been simmering since August 2006, when a black student sat under a schoolyard tree where white students often gathered. Three white students were suspended for later hanging nooses from the tree.

Bell was the first of the six to face trial. He was convicted as an adult of aggravated second-degree battery.

Bell's attorneys appealed the decision, saying the case should have been heard in juvenile court. A Louisiana appeals court agreed.

Osama bin Laden's awaited speech, entitled "Message to the European
Peoples," was released on the Internet this evening. It was first
delivered to al Jazeera approximately 9 hours before its public
distribution on the Internet and was also the second new as-Sahab
product disseminated on November 29. This is bin Laden's sixth
appearance in 2007 and since September alone.

"Message to the European Peoples" is the 90th video product produced
by as-Sahab, al-Qaeda's central media wing, this year and actually is
composed of of three videos and a stand-alone audio file. The three
videos are individually subtitled in German, English and Pashtu.

The videos were posted by "Ekhlaas Correspondent" on behalf of al-Fajr
Media, which regularly posts communiques and messaging products on
behalf of frontline al-Qaeda nodes. Al-Fajr, however, normally does
not distribute as-Sahab materials, which represent al-Qaeda Senior
Leadership in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and is best known for
distributing content recorded in Iraq, Somalia, the Philippines and
other theaters.

Interestingly, the method of distribution for the latest message also
varies from normal practice for as-Sahab products and resembles
methods used by the Global Islamic Media Front (GIMF), which is
considered the media wing for al-Qaeda in Europe. GIMF products are
frequently produced in or subtitled in German.

"Message to the European Peoples" is the second bin Laden message that
has been delivered to al Jazeera before its public release on the
Internet. The previous bin Laden product, "To Our People in Iraq" on
October 22, was also released to al Jazeera ahead of its Internet
distribution. Since the intercept of a working draft of bin Laden's
September 7 video by the private SITE Institute, al-Qaeda has varied
its channels and methods of delivery and distribution, especially for
products containing new material from bin Laden. As-Sahab features
have been assigned longer and randomly generated passwords and have
also been posted by different Jihadi forum users, which suggests that
al-Qaeda has hardened its operational security.

All praise is for Allah, who didn't create the Creation for nothing, and
didn't leave them in vain, but rather, created them to worship Him. And
intelligent people obey Him, and miserable ones disobey him.

As for what comes after:

This message of mine is to the peoples of the states allied to America in
the invasion of Afghanistan and I mention specifically Europe. Peace be on
those who follow the guidance: It isn't hidden from you that the Afghans
have tasted the two bitterest things for two decades at the hands of the
Russians and their Communist agents, but they persevered, fought, and were
resolute and victorious, by the Grace of Allah. And before their wounds had
healed and their grief had ended, they were invaded without right by your
unjust governments, without stopping to think about or reflect on Bush's
claim that this invasion was a response to the events of the 11th,
although--as I mentioned previously--the events of Manhattan were a response
to the American-Israeli coalition's murder of our people in Palestine and
Lebanon. And it was I who was responsible for 9/11, and I stress that all
Afghans--both government and people--had no knowledge of those events and
America knows that, because some of the Taliban's ministers fell into its
hands as captives, and they were interrogated and that became known. And
that's why the Taliban government requested America to produce the evidence
for the truth of its claims prior to the invasion, but it didn't produce any
evidence, and instead insisted on invading; and Europe marched behind it in
that, and had no choice but to be its vassal. It suffices as evidence of
this your entering of this war and your excusing of American soldiers from
being held to account by the European courts. For this reason, this address
of mine is to you, not to your politicians, as it is no longer a secret that
Blair, Brown, Berlusconi, Aznar, Sarkozy and those with him and their like
love to shade themselves in the shade of the White House. And there isn't a
major difference worth mentioning between them and many of the leaders of
the Third World.

So to summarize, in this war you have combined two injustices: the first is
that this war was waged against the Afghans without right. You didn't have
even one piece of evidence suitable for submission to a court. Additionally,
you destroyed the camps of al-Qaida and killed some of its members, and you
captured others, most of whom were from Pakistan. So what is the sin of the
Afghans due to which you are continuing this unjust war against them? Their
only sin is that they are Muslims, and this illustrates the extent of the
Crusaders' hatred of Islam and its people.

Second, in this war, you have not observed the ethics and protocol of
warfare. Most of your victims--as a result of the bombing--are women and
children, and intentionally so. You know that our women don't fight, yet you
target them even on days of celebration, knowingly and adamantly, hoping by
that to break the morale of the Mujahideen. This will not benefit you,
however, for we are resolute and, by the grace of Allah, the Glorious and
Great, continuing to take revenge on the unjust and expel the occupying
invaders. I have personally witnessed incidents like these, and the matter
continues on an almost daily basis, and the hospitals are full of innocent
people."

You have no religion, morals, humanity or shame. And for your information,
the Afghan people are a courageous, defiant, jealous, honorable, religious
Muslim people who refuse humiliation and submission to invaders. And their
history is rich in resolve and victories. They fought Britain in its glory
days and defeated it by the grace of Allah, and fought the Russians in their
glory days as well and defeated them by the grace of Allah. And today, they
are fighting America and its agents under the leadership of the Commander of
the Believers, Mullah Umar, may Allah protect him, and under the command of
the Knight of the Field, Hajji Mansoor Dadullah. I ask Allah, the Most High
to grant them victory and resolve.

"In conclusion, I remind you that the American tide is ebbing, by the grace
of Allah, and that they shall soon depart for their homeland beyond the
Atlantic and leave the neighbors to settle their accounts with each other.
So it is better for you to restrain your politicians who are thronging the
steps of the White House and work diligently to remove oppression from the
oppressed, for justice is right and injustice is torment, and returning to
the truth is the hallmark of men of understanding. And peace be on those who
follow the guidance."

It is interesting to note that the Jihadis took AQSL's request to pollinate
the video across a wide range of European message boards. Essentially, they
were asked to spam these boards with bin Laden's message and many, in fact,
took this request seriously.

I have also confirmed that the video was channeled through the Global
Islamic Media Front, which is AQ Europe's media wing and is heavily based in
Austria and Germany with assets located in Canada and the U.S.

Note that UBL does not mention Iraq even once. AQSL now thinks that they
have the upper hand in Afghanistan. Also note how this speech differs from
his past addresses to Americans. Adam Gadahn, I am told, is being taken
less seriously within AQSL because they have realized how out of touch he is
with the Western mindset.

IV. The Interrogator

A number of studies of interrogation discuss qualities said to be desirable in an interrogator. The list seems almost endless -
a professional manner, forcefulness, understanding and sympathy, breadth of general knowledge, area knowledge, "a practical
knowledge of psychology", skill in the tricks of the trade, alertness, perseverance, integrity, discretion, patience, a high I.Q.,
extensive experience, flexibility, etc., etc. Some texts even discuss the interrogator's manners and grooming, and one prescribed
the traits considered desirable in his secretary.

A repetition of this catalogue would serve no purpose here, especially because almost all of the characteristics mentioned are
also desirable in case officers, agents, policemen, salesmen, lumberjacks, and everybody else. The search of the pertinent
scientific literature disclosed no reports of studies based on common denominator traits of successful interrogators or any
other controlled inquiries that would invest these lists with any objective validity.

Perhaps the four qualifications of chief importance to the interrogator are (1) enough operational training and experience to
permit quack recognition of leads; (2) real familiarity with the language to be used; (3) extensive background knowledge about
the interrogatee's native country (and intelligence service, if employed by one); and (4) a genuine understanding of the source
as a person.

individually or as a team. Whenever a number of interrogators is available, the percentage of successes is increased by careful
matching of questioners and sources and by ensuring that rigid prescheduling does not prevent such matching. Of the four traits
listed, a genuine insight into the source's character and motives is perhaps most important but least common. Later portions of this
manual explore this topic in more detail. One general observation is introduced now, however, because it is considered basic to
the establishment of rapport, upon which the success of non-coercive interrogation depends.

The interrogator should remember that he and the interrogatee are often working at cross-purposes not because the interrogates is
malevolently withholding or misleading but simply because what he wants front the situation is not what the interrogator wants. The
interrogator's goal is to obtain useful information -- facts about which the interrogatee presumably have acquired information.
But at the outset of the interrogation, and perhaps for a long time afterwards, the person being questioned is not greatly concerned
with communicating his body of specialized information to his questioner; he is concerned with putting his best foot forward.
The question uppermost in his mind, at the beginning, is not likely to be "How can I help PBPRIME?" but rather "What sort of impression
am I making?" and, almost immediately thereafter, "What is going to happen to me now?" (An exception is the penetration agent or
provocateur sent to a KUBARK field installation after training in withstanding interrogation. Such an agent may feel confident enough
not to be gravely concerned about himself. His primary interest, from the beginning, may be the acquisition of information about the
interrogator and his service.)

The skilled interrogator can save a great deal of time by understanding the emotional needs of the interrogates. Most people confronted
by an official -- and dimly powerful -- representative of a foreign power will get down to cases much faster if made to feel, from
the start, that they are being treated as individuals. So simple a matter as greeting an interrogatee by his name at the opening of
the session establishes in his mind the comforting awareness that he is considered as a person, not a squeezable sponge.

This is not to say that egotistic types should be allowed to bask at length in the warmth of individual recognition. But it is
important to assuage the fear of denigration which afflicts many people when first interrogated by making it clear that the
individuality of the interrogatee is recognized. With this common understanding established, the interrogation can move on to
impersonal matters and will not later be thwarted or interrupted -- or at least not as often -- by irrelevant answers designed
not to provide facts but to prove that the interrogatee is a respectable member of the human race.

Although it is often necessary to trick people into telling what we need to know, especially in CI interrogations, the initial
question which the interrogator asks of himself should be, "How can I make him want to tell me what he knows?" rather than "How
can I trap him into disclosing what he knows?" If the person being questioned is genuinely hostile for ideological reasons,
techniques of manipulation are in order. But the assumption of hostility -- or at least the use of pressure tactics at the first
encounter -- may make difficult subjects even out of those who would respond to recognition of individuality and an initial
assumption of good will.

Another preliminary comment about the interrogator is that normally he should not personalize. That is, he should not be pleased,
flattered, frustrated, goaded, or otherwise emotionally and personally affected by the interrogation. A calculated display of
feeling employed for a specific purpose is an exception; but even under these circumstances the interrogator is in full control.
The interrogation situation is intensely inter-personal; it is therefore all the more necessary to strike a counter-balance by
an attitude which the subject clearly recognizes as essentially fair and objective. The kind of person who cannot help personalizing,
who becomes emotionally involved in the interrogation situation, may have chance (and even spectacular) successes as an interrogator
but is almost certain to have a poor batting average.

It is frequently said that the interrogator should be "a good judge of human nature." In fact, [approx. 3 lines deleted] (3) This
study states later (page "Great attention has been given to the degree to which persons are able to make judgements from casual
observations regarding the personality characteristics of another. The consensus of research is that with respect to many kinds of
judgments, at least some judges perform reliably better than chance...." Nevertheless, "... the level
of reliability in judgments is so low that research encounters difficulties when it seeks to determine who makes better judgments...."

In brief, the interrogator is likelier to overestimate his ability to judge others than to underestimate it, especially if he has had
little or no training in modern psychology. It follows that errors in assessment and in handling are likelier to result from snap
judgments based upon the assumption of innate skill in judging others than from holding such judgments in abeyance until enough facts
are known.

There has been a good deal of discussion of interrogation experts vs. subject-matter experts. Such facts as are available suggest
that the latter have a slight advantage. But for counterintelligence purposes the debate is academic. [approx. 5 lines deleted]

It is sound practice to assign inexperienced interrogators to guard duty or to other supplementary tasks directly related to
interrogation, so that they can view the process closely before taking charge. The use of beginning interrogators as screeners
(see part VI) is also recommended.

Although there is some limited validity in the view, frequently expressed in interrogation primers, that the interrogation is
essentially a battle of wits, the CI interrogator who encounters a skilled and resistant interrogatee should remember that a wide

Should the United States, seeking to recalibrate the balance between security and liberty in the "war on terror,"
emulate Israel in its treatment of Palestinian detainees?

That is the position that Guantanamo detainee lawyers Avi Stadler and John Chandler of Atlanta, and some others,
have advocated. That people in U.S. custody could be held incommunicado for years without charges, and could be
prosecuted or indefinitely detained on the basis of confessions extracted with torture is worse than a national
disgrace. It is an assault on the foundations of the rule of law.

But Israel's model for dealing with terrorism, while quite different from that of the U.S., is at least as shameful.

Long before the first suicide bombing by Palestinians in 1994, Israel had resorted to extrajudicial killings, home
demolitions, deportations, curfews and other forms of collective punishment barred by international law.

Late in his tenure as mayor of New York, Rudolph W. Giuliani billed tens of thousands of dollars in travel expenses to little-known city
agencies as he was beginning an extramarital affair, a political Web site reported yesterday.

The report, on the Politico Web site, cited documents obtained under the New York State Freedom of Information Law. But it was unclear
from those documents whether Mr. Giuliani allocated those travel costs, from 1999 through 2001, to obscure city offices in an attempt
to conceal expenses associated with the relationship or for some accounting purpose.
The administration of Mr. Giuliani’s successor, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, said in 2002, several months after taking office, that the
Giuliani administration had kept the budget for the mayor’s office artificially low by paying more than $5 million in salaries through
other city agencies. The agencies to which Mr. Giuliani billed the travel expenses were outside the mayor’s office.
The New York mayor always travels with a security detail, and the expenses for the police detectives assigned to protect him are normally
paid for by the Police Department when he travels on city business.
Asked about the travel expenses during the Republican presidential candidates’ debate last night, Mr. Giuliani denied any wrongdoing.

“I have nothing to do with the handling of their records,” he said. As far as he knew, he said, the records were handled appropriately.

One of Mr. Giuliani’s chief political advisers, Anthony V. Carbonetti, said earlier yesterday that any suggestion that the former mayor
had sought to hide anything was “nonsense.”

“As far as we are concerned, these are all legitimate expenses incurred by the N.Y.P.D. while performing their duty protecting the mayor,”
Mr. Carbonetti said.

Mr. Carbonetti told reporters, “There was no effort to hide anything — on the mayor’s part definitely because this is stuff he has never seen.”

He suggested it would have been easier to conceal the expenses had they been billed to the Police Department, which routinely declines to
provide information about security. A Giuliani aide said last night that it was the campaign’s understanding that the Police Department had
reimbursed the agencies billed for security expenses.

The documents obtained by Politico, described as American Express bills and travel documents, detailed hotel, gas and other costs for the
detectives on trips to Southampton, N.Y. The woman with whom Mr. Giuliani was having an affair, Judith Nathan, who became his third wife,
had a condominium in the Long Island beach community.
Politico said it was impossible to know whether all of Mr. Giuliani’s trips to Southampton were to see Ms. Nathan. In fact, little is known
about the trips, and the Giuliani campaign yesterday did not provide details.
The fact that Mr. Giuliani was carrying on an extramarital affair at the time he made the trips, and that he had been accompanied by his
security detail, was widely reported in 2000.
But the unusual accounting practices highlighted by the Politico Web site, in which the costs for the security detail’s travel expenses
were billed to small agencies, had not before been reported. The disclosure served to refocus attention on that period of Mr. Giuliani’s
life with just over a month before the first votes are cast in the Iowa caucuses.
The report also comes as one of Mr. Giuliani’s rivals for the presidential nomination, Mitt Romney, has been questioning his fiscal
stewardship of the city.
Politico cited credit card receipts for expenses incurred by the Mr. Giuliani’s security detail; the report did not suggest that Mr.
Giuliani had billed the city for the costs of his own expenses or meals. The costs were billed to offices that had nothing to do with
the trips or the mayor’s security, including a agency that regulates loft apartments, one responsible with aiding the disabled and
another that helps provide lawyers for indigent defendants.
When the fact that the security detail was accompanying him on the visits to Ms. Nathan’s condominium was first reported in May 2000,
the Giuliani administration refused to provide an accounting of the expenses, suggesting that it was a security issue.
Police officials acknowledged in January 2001 that they also paid for detectives to guard Ms. Nathan during a period of time before she
and Mr. Giuliani were married. Mr. Bloomberg continued that practice after he came into office in January 2002, and continued to offer
security for Mr. Giuliani, Ms. Nathan and Mr. Giuliani’s estranged wife, Donna Hanover, saying it was a sensible policy as long as there
were “credible threats” to their safety.

The unusual billing of the 11 Southampton trips documented in the receipts came to light at the end of Mr. Giuliani’s eight years as mayor.
An auditor at the comptroller’s office was reviewing the records of the city’s Loft Board in 2001 and found $34,000 in travel expenses,
an unusual sum for the tiny agency.

When the comptroller’s office sought an explanation, Mr. Giuliani’s aides refused, citing security.

Later, according to a spokesman for the comptroller, when the office sought answers from Mr. Bloomberg’s administration,
they got the same response.

I have to confess that I don't understand this ceaseless quest for victimhood. Being raped doesn't confer
some mystical moral superiority on a woman, it just makes her a victim. And unfortunately, in all too many
cases, it just makes her a stupid one.

I'm just curious what basis the moral relativists have for condemning rape in the first place. If I deem
the slaking of my desire for lust - or violence, if you prefer that theory of rape - to be an intrinsic
good, who are you to condemn it? Certainly, one could argue that it is a violation of private property
rights, but then, what of those moral relativists who reject the notion of private property. If all
property is held in common, then how can a woman object if I decide to make use of that which belongs to me?

Divorce — Saudi Style
From this source, via a posting at Covenant Zone:

RIYADH: A Saudi man divorced his wife for watching alone a television programme presented by a male,
an act he deemed immoral, the Al Shams newspaper reported on Saturday.

The man, whom the paper did not identify, ended his marriage on the grounds his wife was effectively
alone with an unrelated man...

Weird, just plain weird. And downright absurd.

Here we have a couple with modern technology in their home and still applying the legalism of
Wahhabism as applied to a television set.

Taliban rebuffs Karzai's negotiation offer
President Hamid Karzai offered to meet with the Taliban leader and give militants a government
position, but a spokesman for the militant group on Sunday said it will “never” negotiate with
Afghan authorities until U.S. and NATO forces leave the country.Karzai made the offer only hours
after a suicide bomber in army disguise attacked a military bus Saturday, killing 30 people —
nearly all of them Afghan soldiers.

At the same time the Constitution of the Taliban Afghanistan has been released.

“Every Afghan has the right to express his feelings (no ideas, ehhh? only "feelings") through his
views, writings or through other means in accordance with the law,” but also warns violators of
Islamic thought “will be punished according to Sharia.”
