I was very fortunate to have been allowed access to the Bethlehem Steel facilities in Bethlehem Pennsylvania in September 2006. The photographs below were captured in a single day of wandering around this massive site which had been closed for about 11 years. As you will see, what I discovered in my explorations was far more beautiful, poignant, and complex than the post-industrial detritus I had expected to find. And I am very grateful to have been given the chance to document this since less than a year after my visit major construction broke ground to transform the Bethlehem Steel site into a multi-purpose hotel/casino/retail/cultural center aimed at revitalizing the Lehigh Valley area.

"Johns's marks articulate matter on a surface so that it becomes an objective correlative of sensations such as, say, looking without focusing, looking fixedly, looking out of windows, looking into darkness, seeing things grow, seeing them sicken, seeing the passing of a day, feeling threatened, feeling nothing, feeling elated, feeling tears prick the back of one's eyes. Marks of varying tempo, weight and direction caress and bruise and elaborate and disrupt and erode the familiar forms of everyday emblems - flags, letters, numbers, etc. - rather as in a Cézanne marks of varying tempo, weight and direction caress and bruise and elaborate and disrupt and erode the familiar forms of everyday objects - apples, ginger-jars, jugs, etc

Tapiistry from New Zeland Digital Art Works This gallery is to show the digital art works that I have made recently. This is quite a change from tapestry and drawing but really fun to do. These works are original digital prints and not reproductions of art works done in a different medium so I have no hesitation in calling them prints.
''We Are Blind...'' 2006 84 x 84cm This work is my first major digital art work. It has been accepted in the Anthony Harper Awards at CoCA (Centre of Contemporary Art) in Christchurch.
The work deals with issues of blindness, both the genetic physical aspect and the mental and psycholigical aspects of blindness in its many forms. Price. $1800.00

4/28/07 George Tenet, is he confessing or is he a conspirator? Download video: Play Usually in high crimes, investigators follow the money trail to find the perpetrator. Not in this case of never-ending coincidences and anomalies. On September 10, ISI agent Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh made a wire transfer of $100,000 to Mohamed Atta's bank account in Florida at the instruction of General Mahmoud Ahmad, the Director of the ISI. "Money man" General Ahmad was in Washington on 9/11, arriving on Sept. 4. He first met with CIA Director George Tenet until Sept. 9, and then met with officials in the Pentagon, the NSC, and the State Department on Sept. 13. The chairmen of the House and Senate Intelligence committees Porter Goss and Bob Graham had breakfast with General Ahmad on Capitol Hill the very morning of Sept. 11! (Can you say conflict of interest?!) Due to pressure from the Bush administration, General Ahmad was subsequently forced to resign on October 8, 2001, effectively blocking any further investigation into the matter. (How convenient!)

What is going on in Washington D.C.?: Kay Griggs Kay married Colonel George Griggs, a Marine Corps Chief of Staff, as well as head of NATO's Psychological Operations. He was also, his wife realized, entirely mind-controlled. Kay, a self-declared Christian, became privy to the real workings of the United States military, leadership training, drug-running and weapons sales, and the secret worldwide camps that train professional assassins. Kay Griggs' report of world events and the power elite paints a picture that begins to explain the hows and whys of our current global scenario.

Well Spring has sprung up here in the Catskills. The last snow melted last week, the birds and bees are doing their thing and the bulbs are thrusting Freudianly through Mother Earth. So from my riverside porch, here are some of the latest offerings.
And of course, do not forget that Rum: A Social & Sociable history is out in a British edition (www.rumspiritof1776.com) and The Alms Trade (www.almstrade.com) has been republished.
The curious may want to check out www.rumpundit.net or www.Catskillreviewofbooks.com, which are developing nicely.
Coming up Thursday, thoughts on the future of the book and the past of the cuneiform tablet on Guardian Comment is Free http://commentisfree.guardian.co.uk/index.html nnd Friday in Tribune will be Barack vs Hillary… hoping for the first to win.
From the Guardian is:
My interview with Senator Bernie Sanders, the sole socialist in the US Senate http://deadlinepundit.blogspot.com/2008/04/green-menace.html
My lament on the PRC's failure to seize the opportunity offered before the Dalai Lama treats the Book of the Dead as a how to guide. http://deadlinepundit.blogspot.com/2008/04/lets-make-deal-prc-and-dalai-lama.html
On the gloomy implications of Bloomberg's failure to get congestion pricing through, http://deadlinepundit.blogspot.com/2008/04/road-blocked.html
And the lamentably illogical UN Human Rights Council decision to globalise the offence of blasphemy http://deadlinepundit.blogspot.com/2008/04/eye-of-beholder.html
And from IR magazine, my Speculator column calling for the Fed to hit the G-Spot. http://deadlinepundit.blogspot.com/2008/04/bear-necessities.html
And of course, if you want to be purged from the list, just drop a line.

Jack and Jill Politics is a blog that offers a Black Bourgeois perspective on American politics. http://www.jackandjillpolitics.com/2007_08_01_archive.html Friday, August 31, 2007 Maybe Condi's Black After All When I read this item over at POLITOPICS, I had to smile.
Here's the Condi Dish: http://www.nydailynews.com/gossip/rush_molloy/2007/08/29/2007-08-29_when_condi_went_nuclear.html Condoleezza Rice may be willing to compromise at a Middle East negotiating table - but not at a jewelry counter.
Coit Blacker, a Stanford professor who is one of the secretary of state's closest friends, recalls going into a shop where Rice asked to see earrings. The clerk showed her costume jewelry. Rice asked to see something nicer, prompting the clerk to whisper some sass under her breath.
Blacker remembers Rice tearing the woman to shreds.
"Let's get one thing straight," he recalls her saying. "You are behind the counter because you have to work for minimum wage. I'm on this side asking to see the good jewelry because I make considerably more."
A manager quickly brought Rice better baubles. Glenn Kessler recounts the tale in his penetrating new bio, "The Confidante: Condoleezza Rice and the Creation of the Bush Legacy." Kessler, a Washington Post correspondent who enjoyed unprecedented access to his subject, says Rice has lost none of her bluntness, once cutting off bulldog Donald Rumsfeld in front of startled Japanese counterparts. But she's also worked hard to soften her edges.
Her top aide, Jim Wilkinson, decreed that she shouldn't be photographed alone, but rather in the convivial company of other people. They may have tried hard to thaw her image when she showed up at an Air Force base in Germany dressed in a black, knee-high skirt and saucy knee-high boots. "With one arm stretched out, she looked like a cross between Mussolini and Liza Minnelli," Kessler writes.
The media ignored President Bush and ran pictures of Condi in those kitty boots. Later, when Rice asked Wilkinson what the fuss was about, he bashfully explained, "Men like these." Rice leaned in and whispered, "We know that."
She does let her hair down. Once at a party Blacker threw, Condi kicked off her shoes and started dancing. Wanting to show his partner how firm Rice's behind was, Blacker postulated that if he aimed a quarter at her butt, it would bounce right off like a rocket.
"He was right," says Kessler. "[Rice] didn't realize what he had done until everyone was laughing hysterically. She was flattered and proud."
And while Bush sometimes introduces her as "the most powerful woman in the history of the world," he also considers her "like my sister." Thus, at a briefing, he skipped over the gory details of the rape and torture committed by Saddam Hussein's sons, explaining: "I didn't want to say [those things] in front of Condi."
The St. Martin's book, which also details Rice's plan "to salvage the last 18 months of the Bush presidency," goes on sale next Tuesday http://www.nydailynews.com/gossip/rush_molloy/2007/08/29/2007-08-29_when_condi_went_nuclear.html

So, you don't believe there ever were Negro (Black, Colored, Afro-American - every twenty to thirty years or so they want a name change) members of the Ku Klux Klan??? Well read on!
One of the last things today's biased media wants anyone to know is that there were Negro members of the Ku Klux Klan. No one has ever written a book about them to my knowledge though such a book would be of great historical interest. In fact, very little documentation has survived. What little does survive speaks volumes and proves that Americans do not know their own history. Here I will simply give my sources of information and quote from them. If anyone has further documentation about the Black membership of the KKK I'd be grateful to be referred to it. Should I come across more documentation I will list it here. My first source of Negro Klan membership is the book, "The Ku Klux Spirit", by J.A. Rogers, noted Negro historian of the 1920's. The Ku Klux Spirit was first published in 1923, by Messenger Publishing Co. It was republished in 1980, by Black Classic Press. On page 34 of his book we find the amazing passage: "A fact not generally known is that there were thousands of Negro Klansmen. These were used as spies on other Negroes and on Northern Whites."

Time Traveler Busted For Insider Trading
This story <http://tv.yahoo.com/news/wwn/20030319/104808600007.html>
reminds me of a very funny Kevin Nealon skit on Saturday Night Live. Sources at the Security and Exchange Commission confirm that 44-year-old Andrew Carlssin offered the bizarre explanation for his uncanny success in the stock market after being led off in handcuffs on January 28. 'We don't believe this guy's story -- he's either a lunatic or a pathological liar,' says an SEC insider. 'But the fact is, with an initial investment of only $800, in two weeks' time he had a portfolio valued at over $350 million. Every trade he made capitalized on unexpected business developments, which simply can't be pure luck. 'The only way he could pull it off is with illegal inside information. He's going to sit in a jail cell on Rikers Island until he agrees to give up his sources.' . . . Carlssin declared that he had traveled back in time from over 200 years in the future, when it is common knowledge that our era experienced one of the worst stock plunges in history. Yet anyone armed with knowledge of the handful of stocks destined to go through the roof could make a fortune. 'It was just too tempting to resist,' Carlssin allegedly said in his videotaped confession. 'I had planned to make it look natural, you know, lose a little here and there so it doesn't look too perfect. But I just got caught in the moment.'
In a bid for leniency, Carlssin has reportedly offered to divulge 'historical facts' such as the whereabouts of Osama Bin Laden and a cure for AIDS.
All he wants is to be allowed to return to the future in his 'time craft.' However, he refuses to reveal the location of the machine or discuss how it works, supposedly out of fear the technology could 'fall into the wrong hands.' The SNL skit was a parody of a Wall Street Week type panel show in which various experts talked about their secret to investing. Kevin Nealon, dressed in a silver jumpsuit, was one of the panelists, named "Future Man." When his turn came to talk about his secret to investing, he held up a line graph and pointed to it, saying that his method was simple: "buy here, sell here, buy sell buy sell buy sell." i want to believe it could happen, though. Some Extra Thoughts On The Controversy Du Jour While i didn't agree with everything in this article by Andrew McCarthy <http://www.nationalreview.com/mccarthy/mccarthy200503281208.asp> of NRO, i did find the following passage persuasive: In the PVS context, we are talking about a person’s own right to life. It doesn’t matter what we, individually or collectively, would want for ourselves. What matters is what, if anything, that person subjectively wanted — even if it doesn’t track our predilections. What matters is whether that person has considered and communicated those desires in an informed and reliable way. If she has, and PVS turns out both to be an appropriate basis to end life and actually to exist in the case at hand, we should not interfere in that choice if the state has made it available through surrogate action. If she hasn’t, we should be erring on the side of life, lest we inevitably venture further down this slope into even more ethically dubious takings of life. As I have argued here, before the state may permit the termination of life in a PVS case, the guardian should be required to establish beyond a reasonable doubt* that the stricken person is in a PVS and that the stricken person evinced, in a knowing and intelligent way, a desire to be removed from sustenance if ever in a hopeless, incapacitated state. On the latter finding, we should encourage living wills to induce a person who considers and feels strongly about this choice to make her intentions clear. In the absence of such a living will, there should be a presumption that the person wants to live. It is life, not death, that our constitution protects. There is a good argument that this should not merely be a presumption but a conclusion. On balance, however, I think we need to make reasonable allowances here, out of respect for the individual’s self-determination, out of the desire to minimize government intrusion into painful family matters, and out of the recognition that it would be unduly haughty to think ourselves capable of fashioning an unbending rule that will do justice in all conceivable situations — because we simply can’t conceive of all the situations that might arise in this area. [emphasis added] i believe, as other bloggers have commented, that there should be a sort of "statute of frauds" for end of life decisions. Contract law will not enforce the sale of land, unless the contract is in writing. The reason is that the subject of the contract, i.e. the specific parcel of land, cannot be replaced if the Court gets it wrong. Obviously, the same rationale applies to a person's life. _______________ * The correct standard, in civil cases, would be "clear and convincing evidence." Which, i understand, was the standard used by Judge Greer in the Florida Court. Whether rightly or wrongly, well, that depends on whom you ask. Media "Distortions"
"Our job is to give people not what they want, but what we decide they ought to have." -- Richard Salent, Former President CBS News.

"News is what someone wants to suppress. Everything else is advertising". former NBC news President Rubin Frank
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Asked to give a toast before the prestigious New York Press Club in 1880, John Swinton, the former Chief of Staff at the New York Times, made this candid confession [it's worth noting that Swinton was called "The Dean of His Profession" by other newsmen, who admired him greatly]:
" There is no such thing, at this date of the world's history, as an independent press. You know it and I know it. There is not one of you who dares to write your honest opinions, and if you did, you know beforehand that it would never appear in print. I am paid weekly for keeping my honest opinions out of the paper I am connected with. Others of you are paid similar salaries for similar things, and any of you who would be so foolish as to write honest opinions would be out on the streets looking for another job.
If I allowed my honest opinions to appear in one issue of my paper, before twenty-four hours my occupation would be gone. The business of the journalist is to destroy the truth; to lie outright; to pervert; to vilify; to fawn at the feet of Mammon, and to sell the country for his daily bread. You know it and I know it and what folly is this toasting an independent press. We are the tools and vassals of the rich men behind the scenes. We are the jumping jacks, they pull the strings and we dance. Our talents, our possibilities and our lives are all the property of other men. We are intellectual prostitutes. "
Jayson Blair
Jayson Blair was a reporter with the New York Times. Despite a past history of exaggerations, he was assigned to the DC Sniper Case. One of his articles triggered a complaint from a competing newspaper to the effect that Jayson has stolen the story from one of their reporters. A subsequent investigation revealed that most of Jayson's work for the New York Times was either stolen or fabricated.

Evidence That the CIA Murdered RFK
A new BBC documentary supports the conclusion that the CIA planned and executed the assassination of Robert Kennedy. The new video and photographic evidence -- the result of a three year long investigation --"puts three senior CIA operatives" at the scene of the murder.
Three of these men have been positively identified as senior officers who worked together in 1963 at JMWAVE, the CIA's Miami base for its Secret War on Castro. David Morales was Chief of Operations and once told friends: "I was in Dallas when we got the son of a bitch and I was in Los Angeles when we got the little bastard."
Gordon Campbell was Chief of Maritime Operations and George Joannides was Chief of Psychological Warfare Operations. Joannides was called out of retirement in 1978 to act as the CIA liaison to the Congressional investigation into the JFK assassination. Now, we see him at the Ambassador Hotel the night a second Kennedy is assassinated.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 23, 2007 First Chapter ‘The Big Con’ By JONATHAN CHAIT I have this problem. Whenever I try to explain what's happening in American politics-I mean, what's really happening-I wind up sounding a bit like an unhinged conspiracy theorist. But honestly, I'm not. My politics are actually quite moderate. (Most real lefties, in fact, think I'm a Washington establishment sellout.) So please give let me a chance to explain myself when I tell you the following: American politics has been hijacked by a tiny coterie of right-wing economic extremists, some of them ideological zealots, others merely greedy, a few of them possibly insane. (Stay with me.)
The scope of their triumph is breathtaking. Over the course of the last three decades, they have moved from the right-wing fringe to the commanding heights of the national agenda. Notions that would have been laughed at a generation ago-that cutting taxes for the very rich is the best response to any and every economic circumstance, or that it is perfectly appropriate to turn the most rapacious and self-interested elements of the business lobby into essentially an arm of the federal government-are now so pervasive, they barely attract any notice.
The result has been a slow-motion disaster. Income inequality has approached levels normally associated with Third World oligarchies, not healthy Western democracies. The federal government has grown so encrusted with business lobbyists that it can no longer meet the great public challenges of our time. Not even many conservative voters or intellectuals find the result congenial. Government is no smaller-it is simply more debt-ridden and more beholden to wealthy elites.
And yet the right-wing ascendancy has continued inexorably despite continual public repudiation. The 2006 elections were only the latest electoral setback. The right has suffered deeper setbacks before, and all of them have proven temporary. In 1982, after the country had entered the deepest recession since the 1930s, Republicans were slaughtered in the midterm congressional races, losing twenty-seven seats in the House of Representatives. Ronald Reagan, whose election two years earlier had seemed to augur a new conservative era, trailed his likely 1984 Democratic challengers by double digits in the polls and seemed destined to be a lame duck. "What we are witnessing this January," wrote the esteemed Washington Post reporter David Broder in the first month of 1983, "is not the midpoint in the Reagan presidency, but its phase-out. 'Reaganism,' it is becoming increasingly clear, was a one-year phenomenon." We know what happened the next year.
And the conservative revolution has had its obituary written many times since. In 1986, Republicans lost the Senate, and shortly thereafter Reagan saw his approval ratings sink as he became embroiled in the Iran-Contra scandal. In 1992, Democrats won back the White House along with both chambers of Congress, and there was widespread talk of "a conservative crackup." It happened again after the public turned on the Republicans following their 1995 government shutdown, and once more after the public rebelled against the Clinton impeachment. By the late 1990s, the Republican revolution had again been written off.
And yet the Republican right keeps coming back, and back, and back. Their fortunes rise and then dip, but each peak is higher than the last peak, and each dip is higher than the last dip. Consider the present situation. Things have gone about as badly as they could have in George W. Bush's second term. A Republican administration started and lost a major war in Iraq; presided over an economy that has failed to deliver higher wages for most Americans; contributed in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina to the near-wipeout of a major American city; launched a failed assault on Social Security, the most popular social program in the history of the United States; and saw its members suffer an almost unprecedented string of sexual and financial scandals. Still, Democrats find themselves holding only the slimmest of majorities in the House and Senate. Even if they hold their majorities in Congress and win the White House in 2008, the structural forces in Washington will make it nearly impossible to roll back any significant chunks of the Bush tax cuts, let alone take on crises like global warming or the forty-five million Americans lacking health insurance.
Global warming, come to think of it, may offer the best metaphor for understanding the conservative ascent. If you look at the temperature of the earth from month to month, it bounces up and down as seasons change and heat spells or cold snaps come and go. If you look at it over the course of many years, however, it is clear that it is moving inexorably in one direction. The arrival of winter does not mean the end of global warming. To confuse the short term blips with the long-term trend is to mistake the weather for the climate. The 2006 elections are one of those blips, a pause in the right's three-decade ascent.
Permanent partisan majorities are not possible in American politics. Power changes hands regularly. Sometimes the other party's president will preside over an economic boom or win a war. Sometimes yours will preside over a recession or sleep with an intern. Short-term fluctuations, often driven by events beyond the control of the party in power, are inevitable. So the way to win is not to win every election but to control the terms of the debate. The conservative movement's signal triumph is to have done just this, reshaping what is possible in American politics over the long term. This is not, therefore, a book about the political weather. It is a book about the political climate.
Most people under forty fail to grasp how different American politics looked three decades ago. For me, there is no better evidence of the rightward lurch than recalling that my father used to be a Republican. A liberal Republican, to be sure, but a Republican. By the time I was old enough to understand anything about politics, he had long since abandoned the GOP, and at first his former affiliation puzzled me. In the political world in which I came of age -Ronald Reagan left the White House during my junior year of high school-it seemed inconceivable that someone like my dad, who today resides well within the center of the Democratic Party, could identify in any way with the Republicans.
But, of course, as someone my age could not have guessed, the parties of a generation ago bore only a faint resemblance to their modern versions. After World War II, the Republicans accepted the new role of government in American life ushered in by Franklin Roosevelt. The decades after the war saw a great American consensus. Democrats were a bit looser with the purse strings, Republicans a bit tighter, but their general vision of the country was the same. This vision was expressed by the Republican president Dwight Eisenhower just before his inauguration when he declared, "There is, in our affairs at home, a middle way between untrammeled freedom of the individual and the demands for the welfare of the whole nation. This way must avoid government by bureaucracy as carefully as it avoids neglect of the helpless." This credo was the credo of the Republican Party my dad could identify with. He looked up to GOP moderates like Nelson Rockefeller and William Milliken, the long-time governor of our home state of Michigan-men born to privilege who used their power for the benefit of all, not just their own class.
Eisenhower left the top tax rate at a staggering 91 percent, and he repeatedly preached the virtues of budget balance. (When a colleague complained about this confiscatory rate, hi |
