It’s not often that an invasive species is welcomed into its host community, but the spotted knapweed is an exception to the norm.
Northern Michigan beekeepers want to keep the aggressive invasive plant around because honey bees collect nectar from their numerous purple flowers.
Introduced to North American in the late 1800’s, the invasive plant releases a toxin into the soil which reduces crop production and the growth of native plants. It also increases surface water runoff, soil erosion, and stream sedimentation.
But, Michigan beekeepers now rely on spotted knapweed for nectar, from late July to early August, at a time when other plants aren’t blooming, said Roger Hoopingarner, president of the Michigan Beekeepers’ Association.
“My estimate is that [honey from spotted knapweed] produces about $4 million annually for Michigan beekeepers,” Hoopingarner said. “Unfortunately for [beekeepers], Congress mandated many years ago that invasive, non-native plants should be eliminated, if possible. It doesn’t pay to be a small minority.”
Beekeepers may be a minority, but they’re a major contributor to Michigan agriculture — the state is among the nation’s top 10 honey producers. Honey bees are responsible for a $15 billion a year industry that includes the production of 130 crops nationwide, according to a U.S. Department of Agriculture report released in December.
Terry Klein, beekeeper and owner of TM Klein and Sons Honey in St. Charles, Mich., is concerned about the commercial beekeepers in northern Michigan because the western part of the state holds most of the state’s fruit crops. But other impacts like colony collapse disorder exacerbate the situation.
“If that was the only thing bothering or hurting the bee industry right now it would be one thing, but we’ve been surviving on 80 percent to 90 percent winter loss every year for five years,” Klein said. “Can you imagine a milk production farm surviving on 80 to 90 percent loss of cattle every winter? It just doesn’t happen.”
Last spring, Michigan Beekeepers Association members, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Michigan Department of Agriculture, decided that two European beetle species would be released on six public land sites by a team of Michigan State University researchers. Since the summer of 2010, the beetles have been feeding on the invasive plant.
Other Great Lakes states like Wisconsin, Minnesota and Ohio already introduced the beetles.
“These two beetle species have been released by all the surrounding states and have begun to have an effect on the knapweed,” Hoopingarner said.
But many beekeepers in northern Michigan say they worry about the impact on honey and agriculture production —
crops like red tart cherries, apples and blueberries all rely on honey bee pollination.
Researchers, like Doug Landis at Michigan State University, aim to replace knapweed in Michigan with other healthier, nectar-producing plants.
“The goal is not to eradicate or eliminate spotted knapweed,” Landis said.
Effective, biological control of knapweed reduces its abundance without completely eliminating it.
Most likely, the knapweed will always be part of Michigan’s flora, he said.
Landis and other researchers at Michigan State University have been collecting and analyzing data
on plants that would best replace knapweed, thanks to federal and state funding that the project
received. The research shows that late figwort, swamp milkweed and Culver’s root are all contenders.
But these non-invasive floras wouldn’t replace knapweed overnight, Landis said. In other states
it took from three to five years for the targeted invasive species to drastically decline, and
it took the beetles decades to spread across the region.
Despite these research efforts, Klein is still weary of the species being considered for replanting.
He referenced information from an open letter written by Jay Harman, a Geography professor at
Michigan State University, who is opposed to the biological control of spotted knapweed.
According to Harman’s letter, these potential native plant replacements aren’t going to grow well
in northern Michigan, Klein said.
“Native grasses and other flowers are not going to get the blossoms per acre that the bees need
to survive on and produce a crop,” Klein said. “We depend a lot on a little honeybee. I call it
the invisible industry; we don’t have a very big voice.”
But Hoopingarner says that trying to rid Michigan of the invasive plant is worth trying.
“The plan of planting native species to replace the knapweed is a good, even if unproven, idea,”
Hoopingarner wrote in a letter concerning his stance on the issue.

I understand all the factors that are negatively affecting the bee industry, and how critical
a healthy bee population is to our wellbeing. Hopefully, researchers will find suitable substitutes
for knapweed, an extremely noxious plant. I, also, agree that there are many native plants
flowering at the same time as knapweed. The problem being that in certain areas knapweed has
displaced native plants for so long a time that memory fails. Give the eradication efforts and
plant replacement a chance to work.

OTTAWA A couple of days after the 9/11 attacks, Raheel Raza received a phone call from a minister at
the United Church in the Toronto neighbourhood where she lives. The minister wanted Raza to speak at
the church that coming Sunday, to say something that might help the congregation understand the horrific
events.
"She said her parishioners were terribly upset and she wanted a Muslim to speak to her congregation and
I was the Muslim she knew best," says Raza, recalling that phone call 10 years later. "I didn't know
what to say. What could I tell them? I was as shocked as anybody."
Nevertheless, Raza, a journalist and activist, accepted the invitation. "But I had to make a choice.
Was I going to be an apologist for Islam or was I going to actually address the issue of what was wrong
with Islam."
She chose the latter.
That Sunday, Raza stood in the church pulpit and told 250 parishioners that those 19 Muslims who took
part in the 9/11 attacks represented a perverse interpretation of Islam, and, yes, that perversion was
present in North America as part of a deliberate effort to Islamize the West.

fixed-term marriage contract according to the Usuli Shia schools.The duration of this
type of marriage is fixed at its inception and is then automatically dissolved upon
completion of its term.

wedlock and not for debauchery. Then give those of these women you have enjoyed the

The Nikah al-Mutah is used in Shiah Islam in various ways: * It is used in modern times
when people move from one place to another, such as from one country to another.
Thus students, workers, scholars are allowed to fulfil their sexual and emotional needs
if they are in another country. It may lead to permanent marriage afterwards. *
It may be used to satisfy one's sexual needs... * It may be used to become mahram
"unmarriable" with somebody with whom they do not intend to cohabit or have a married
relationship, but with whom they spend a lot of time ... * Two people who live under
the same roof but are not mahram (un-marriable) and must observe hijab may engage in a
symbolic nikah al-mutah with the others' offspring for a minimal amount of time
(two minutes or less) ... * Young unmarried couples may decide to use nikahu l-Mutah
as a permissible alternative to zina. * Some divorced men and women prefer to commit
for only a few years at a time.
*** Differences from permanent marriage ***
Nikah Mut'a is a marriage with a pre-set time. It is important to note that different
Marja "authorities" may give different fatwa "legal rulings" on some issues. Many of
the following rules may be changed in the Islamic marriage contract. * The marriage is
agreed upon to be voided after a pre-set time. This permits the couple to expect and
prepare emotionally for the end of the marriage. * No divorce is necessary. In Shia fiqh
("jurisprudence"), a divorce is viewed as a complex process involving mediators[citation
needed] and a period aimed at giving the couple the chance to reconcile. This is not
necessary in Nikahul-Mutah, since the marriage does not end due to disharmony but due
to the preset time being reached. * The husband may void the Nikahu l-Mutah earlier than
agreed. If he does and they have had sexual intercourse, he must give her full mahr
"bride gift". If they have not had intercourse, he must give her half that amount, though
the recommended precaution is that he should give her full mahr. A distinction between
a talaq "divorce" in a nikah and voiding a nikahu l-mutah is made in a conversation
reported in a hadith collection.[2]. * The couple do not inherit from each other.
Since the marriage is not permanent, the couple is not considered a single, merged unit.
* The husband is financially responsible for any children resulting from the marriage.
As it is believed that a woman should not be burdened with the responsibility of providing
for a family, she is allowed to work and spend her money as she chooses. * The wife may
leave her house against her husband's will. * The husband need not pay for the wife's
expenses. This complements the above point. * It is permitted to marry a woman from
Ahl al-Kitab "People of the Book" (followers of monotheistic religions). The difference
in jurisprudence between different religions is overcome by this rule. It is understood
that the Muslim Nikah does not have an equivalent form among the People of the Book.
Therefore, women who are of the People of the Book are unaccustomed to the special rules
of Nikah, for example, the husband's responsibility for the wife's expenses or the wife's
not leaving her house against the husband's wishes. These difference in religious laws
make it desirable to wait with the higher level of commitment that Nikah requires until
they are overcome, in order to minimize potential friction in family life. * The wives
are not counted toward the maximum of four. Since the husband is not required to support
the wife, and the marriage is not permanent, the circumstances leading to the restriction
of having no more than four wives does not apply. However, many Shia scholars have ruled
that one cannot take more than four temporary wives. * The Nikahu l-Mutah can be used
exclusively for the aim of having sex.

racist but sexist, to say they live in a "white christian male power structure," is pretty awful.
White people on top of the world, males on top of the world, I think we? all learned as kids
that equality is the best way. Also I don't think they mean to bring "illegals" into the Country
but people who are on temporary work visas.

I accidentally found your videos while researching info between what Holocaust
believers and deniers use in their arguments to draw up my own conclusion and
decided to watch a few of your videos. I must say I am rather moved by this
one, I am not an Obama fan but I was a huge fan of his inauguration speech,
and I think yours better. It really moved me. I'm just sad because I think
ignorant people will label you as an uncle Tom without even listening to what
