 intelligence agencies, not only to defile and humiliate the prisoners - and defile the soldiers
 themselves - but to severely tarnish the reputation of America (even more than it already

Torture has been exposed in Guantanamo Bay for over 2 years now. Torture and other abuses
 of prisoners in Iraq by coalition forces has been known for over a year since the invasion. Yet,

Bishops Call the Church to Pray for Peace

A battle cry is ringing out — can you hear it? The bishops of the Free Methodist Church are calling
our people to pray for world peace. Here's how the call came about, and what you can do to join the
 battle:In early December at their annual retreat, the four North American Free Methodist bishops
spent part of their time together discussing, reflecting and praying about several items not on the
agenda — war and peace among them.

As part of their preparations and meetings, the bishops (individually and collectively) studied the
Bible's 1 John and The Missional Leader (by Alan Roxburgh and Fred Romanuk, Jossey_Bass 2006).
Bishop Richard Snyder brought a very preliminary draft of "A Call to Battle Through Prayer," a document
 that quickly resonated in the heart of each bishop because, as Bishop David Kendall says, "This is a
 situation that eludes resolution and is a matter of critical concern for North Americans and others around
the world. Many are grieving over war's tremendous human losses — both those that have come already
 and those that lie ahead.

"The most important things are accomplished, not by human wisdom or might, but by God's wisdom and
 God's power.
It's important to remember that our struggle is not against flesh and blood [Ephesians 6:12].
"That is why we are calling the church to pray — earnestly, fervently, persistently —

for God's divine intervention in bringing peace to our world, the Middle East, and Iraq in particular."

What ought we do ? Let us anchor our lives firmly in the unshakable kingdom of God.
To do so we must express kingdom values as we respond to our world and its terrors.
In particular:
We value human beings, made in God’s image, no matter how different from us and no matter
where they may live. We identify especially with the weak, defenseless, and powerless—the lost,
least, last, because that is what God does.
We become like little children in our humility and trust because that is the way of the kingdom.
We seek grace to treasure not only our loves ones (which comes natural to us), but all for whom
Christ died (which comes only "supernaturally").

We seek to overcome evil with good, resisting temptations to vengeance that only deepen cycles
of violence. We ennoble, honor, and join with all that protect the innocent, relieve the suffering,
care for the traumatized, repair what has been destroyed, and seek the right (i.e., as God defines right)
 measures to protect against future assault.

We accept our King’s assignments for these days, confident they will serve the interests of his kingdom
but also, in the end, the interests of all. Let us do what God has gifted and called us to do, knowing that
our obedience will count, in ways that a purely worldly perspective can hardly perceive.

We do not need to fear. We have hope for this world but also beyond this world that makes us strong
and helpful for this world. We therefore prepare to give a reason for the hope that we have. Here is that call ...
