A Chilling Effect on the Great Global Melt
E-MAIL Print  Reprints Save Share
LinkedinDiggFacebookMixxYahoo! BuzzPermalinkBy ANDREW C. REVKIN
Published: January 18, 2002
One of the biggest predicted impacts of global warming is a rise in sea level as ice on land melts.
And nowhere is there more terrestrial ice than in Antarctica. If the vast West Antarctic Ice Sheet
were to slide into the sea, it would raise oceans more than 13 feet.

But a new study of several inland rivers of ice that nourish this sprawling frozen plain shows that
after a long period of rapid movement and thinning, their flow is slowing, and as a result, they
are growing thicker.

The change means that this part of western Antarctica is likely to serve as a frozen bank for water i
nstead of a source, slightly countering an overall trend toward rising seas, according to the research.

In the study, described in today's issue of the journal Science, the researchers calculated that the
change in the seaward flow of ice in this part of Antarctica could, by the end of the century, be the
equivalent of turning off the Missouri River.

The change appears to be related to the slow warming that has been going on since the end of the
last ice age, 12,000 years ago, and not the accelerated warming trend in the last five decades that
many scientists have ascribed in part to human activities, said the authors, Dr. Ian R. Joughin, an
engineer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in
Pasadena, Calif., and Dr. Slawek Tulaczyk, a professor of earth sciences at the University of California,
 Santa Cruz.

Along with other polar experts, Dr. Joughlin and Dr. Tulaczyk noted that other parts of the West
Antarctic Ice Sheet were behaving in the opposite way, speeding up and sending more ice toward
the sea, where great icebergs split from the broad ice shelf and eventually melt.

As a result, the total contribution of all the Antarctic freezing and melting to the slow rise in sea levels
remains unknown, said Dr. Richard B. Alley, an expert on ice and climate at Pennsylvania State University.

''This teaches us more about the system,'' Dr. Alley said, referring to the new work. ''But it shouldn't
affect what a coastal property owner thinks one way or the other.''

Antarctica's ice sheets and the ice shelves that jut from the continent like the ragged brim of an old
Panama hat are formed as snowfall in the interior eventually compresses into ice, which slowly
slides downhill toward the sea.

In places called ice streams, the flow can vary substantially. In some places, these ice streams exist
where heat from geothermal activity transforms the underbelly of a glacier into a slick slurry of mud
and water.

The new study focused on several ice streams that lead into the Ross Ice Shelf, one of the broadest
spots in the continent's floating frozen fringe. The scientists analyzed data collected by redirecting a
Canadian satellite's radar-imaging device toward the Antarctic from its normal, northward-looking view.

They found a substantial change from movement estimated in earlier studies of the same ice streams,
 Dr. Joughin said.

If the slowdown continues at the same pace seen over the last 20 years, Dr. Joughin said, ''it could
stop altogether in the next 70 or 80 years.'' He added, ''That would cause it to thicken more, because
 nothing is leaving.''

In their paper, he and Dr. Tulaczyk said the slowing -- and eventual thickening --
of the ice might be a result of all the thinning that has occurred in the thousands
of years since the last ice age.

As the rivers of ice lose mass, the extreme cold at the surface can more easily
migrate down through the ice and freeze any water acting as a lubricant deep
beneath, causing the ice to stick to the earth and grind to a halt.

In the long run, this could produce a stop-and-start rhythm, said
Dr. Robert A. Bindschadler, a glaciologist at the NASA Goddard Space Flight
Center in Greenbelt, Md.

Once the ice streams start to thicken, the chill will not reach the bottom as
easily, and the geothermal heat from below might melt some ice, allowing the
glacier to start sliding toward the sea again, Dr. Bindschadler said.

''It might cycle on and off or stay where it is,'' he said. ''But for now we can't say.''

Whatever is happening in the streams feeding the Ross Ice Shelf is not happening farther north, where
the Pine Island and Thwaites Glaciers are calving more icebergs than ever, said Dr. Eric Rignot, a glacier
expert who works down the hall from Dr. Joughin at the NASA laboratory.

''Antarctic still has pretty large uncertainties attached to it,'' Dr. Rignot said.

In Experiment, Mammal Cells Produce Silk Like a Spider's
E-MAIL Print  Reprints Save Share

Published: January 18, 2002
In an experiment that could lead to mass production of strong, lightweight silk, scientists at a Canadian
biotechnology company and a United States Army research center have spliced spider genes into cells
from cows and hamsters and induced the cells to churn out silk. The silk, grown in tissue cultures, has
been spun into threads that are comparable to those produced by spiders.

The scientists are seeking to produce dragline silk, what spiders use for the radiating spokes in their
webs, a fiber that, pound for pound, is stronger than steel but also light, elastic and easily recyclable.

''No one has been able to make fibers like this before,'' said Dr. Jeffrey D. Turner, president and chief
executive of the company, Nexia Biotechnologies. ''That's a huge advance in this field.''

Nexia, of Vaudreuil-Dorian, Quebec, is planning to expand its silk production to a commercial scale with
goats that have been genetically altered to secrete silk proteins in their milk. The company has bred
the goats, but they have not yet begun producing milk.

The researchers, from Nexia and the United States Army Soldier and Biological Chemical Command in
Natick, Mass., describe their work in today's issue of the journal Science. They said they had inserted
genes derived from two species of spiders into kidney cells from baby hamsters and udder cells from
cows. The genes caused the cells to produce silk proteins, which were collected and squeezed out a
syringe into fibers.

The military is interested in silk for medical sutures and bulletproof vests.

Dr. Cheryl Y. Hayashi, a professor of biology at the University of California at Riverside who studies silk
genes, called the research ''a big breakthrough.'' After decades of work, ''finally, we have a way to turn
these recombinant silk proteins into something that resembles a spider silk fiber,'' Dr. Hayashi said.

Scientists have long sought an artificial way to produce silk, because spider farms are not practical; as
predators, spiders do not like to live near one other. Silk worms, which produce a fiber that is weaker
than spider silk, can be cultivated.

Researchers' efforts to produce silk until now have had limited success. Silk protein molecules are long,
and it is difficult to deduce the DNA that produces them. It is also difficult to insert long pieces of spider
DNA into another organism's genetic code. In earlier experiments with bacteria and yeast, scientists
were able to produce only a truncated, weaker silk protein.

The silk proteins produced by the mammal cells are longer but still considerably shorter than proteins
found in natural spider silk. In addition, the cells produce only one of the two types of proteins commonly
 found in spider silk.

Scientists do not fully understand how spiders spin their syrupy solution of silk proteins into threads.
The Nexia and Army scientists found that giving the fibers a strong tug after they had been squirted
out vastly improved them, probably by lining up the proteins and allowing them to interlock more tightly,
 like Velcro.

The synthetic silk fibers are as tough as natural fibers -- a property useful for stopping projectiles like
bullets -- but only about a third as strong, meaning they can support one-third the weight before breaking.

''There's still something wrong, several things wrong,'' said Dr. David P. Knight, a researcher at the
 University of Oxford in England.

The second silk protein was needed for strength, Dr. Knight said, and a closer copy of the spider's
spinning apparatus would produce better results. Nonetheless, he said he was ''very excited'' by the
advances.

Dr. Costas N. Karatzas, Nexia's vice president for research and development and senior author of the
Science paper, said the researchers would now try to produce the second protein and try varying mixtures
of the two proteins to improve the silk.

The company's tissue cultures produce only small amounts of silk -- the experiments reported in Science
 generated only half an ounce.

For mass production, Nexia will turn to a herd of goats. In 2000, it announced the birth of two
genetically engineered male goats, Peter and Webster. The researchers added to the goats'
genome a silk gene designed to switch on in the mammary glands of lactating females. They then
bred the two with females in the herd in hope that their daughters would make silk in their milk.

The researchers verified last year that the genes were present and working in Webster's and
Peter's descendants by injecting hormones into some of the young female offspring to induce
them to lactate. The goats are now pregnant and are expected to start producing milk naturally
after they give birth in a few months.

While researching the CIA project MKULTRA, I find that Richard Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld
were working for President Ford at the time that The President apologised to the widow Olson...
The offical story is that the CIA gave Dr Olson LSD and it drove him insane and that is
why he"fell or jumped" out a hotel window to his death.
The US government gave the widow a large cashpayment and
said they were sorry...
Check out these interesting White House Memos...The Olson family says it was a murder coverup...
The CIA killed him because after eating LSD he quit his job at Ft. Deitrick Biological
weapons laboratory and he was a security risk...
He had a "radical change of beliefs" and decided that  designing bioweapons was a bad thing to do with his
life...

Subject: Robert Lederers "Apology" to the CIA Controlled Media
From: "International Advocates for Health Freedom" jham@iahf.com
Date: Sat, 16 Sep 2000 20:45:56 -0400
IAHF LIST: Robert Lederer has been exposing the genocidal spraying in NYC
to control the West Nile Virus, (which CIA created) and he comes to some
interesting conclusions about the degree of CIA involvement in our media
here that are well researched and very much worth being aware of.

Robert Ledererman's Apology to the Media
http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/8425/CIAPRESS.HTM#top

Boy, do I feel stupid. I've been blaming hard-working reporters for biased coverage of the West Nile Virus issue, their silence
on the Manhattan Institute's Nazi-CIA-Eugenics link and for refusing to report on the Bush family's close connection to Hitler.
In my naivete I was implying that the CIA was somehow influencing their coverage. How ignorant can one person get? Now
I know better. After following a series of leads starting from an obscure article found on the internet the whole issue is much
clearer and I can announce my findings. The media is not influenced by the CIA-the media is the CIA. Not that I can claim
any credit for this insight. There are hundreds of carefully researched articles and even entire books about this subject-not
to mention a Congressional report specifically about it.

What began the process of pulling the blinders from my eyes was one sentence in a press release announcing Ronald
Reagan's nomination of William Casey-the founder of the Manhattan Institute-to be his Director of the CIA.

The release mentioned that among Mr. Casey's many accomplishments was that he ran the Reagan campaign,
conducted secret intelligence operations during WWII [with Nazi ally and board member of I.G. Farben, Allen Dulles]
was the chair of Operation Rescue [a CIA front which helped thousands of former Nazis emigrate to the U.S.], and
manipulated the stock market as chair of the Securities and Exchange Commission. It went on to note that Casey
was also the lead counsel [and as I later found out-top stockholder] in Capital Cities, the communications company
that owned ABC until it was bought by Disney in 1996. He held that textbook example of a conflict of interest position
while serving as CIA director.

Following that lead I found that many of Capital Cities founders were also formerly involved in intelligence, many of them
having worked with Casey under Allen Dulles-the first CIA director.

In other words, ABC was owned by the CIA during the Gulf War and throughout the Reagan, Bush and much of the Clinton
administrations. It was bought in 1996 by Disney, a company with many allegations of its own to having a CIA-mind control
connection, whose creator had long been considered an FBI informer. Perhaps that explains why Manhattan Institute poster
boy for a police state Rudy Giuliani's staged radio show is on WABC.
