Lots of friends are passing and some are passing intestate (without a will)
and that is creating problems for their heirs. So, here are a few tips for
those of you who have not got around to handling your "bizness" and/or tips
you can share with a friend:
1)
Have a basic will...if you don't want to go a lawyer then know the requirements in your state..
some states require a will where your signature is witnessed by 2 witnesses (the witnesses don't
have to read the will..just witness you signing it then sign with their name mailing address under
"witnesses")..some states require that you sign before a notary..most will accept a holographic
will..handwritten and signed by you..do think about your personal property and put in writing that
"I want my niece Janie Doe to have my pearl necklace" or arrange to have your items divided up by
family members so they all be on their good behavior once you're gone.; (Lots of sites online re
drafting wills and/or visit Nolo.com for "how to" books);
2)
Make sure you have assigned beneficiaries/co-beneficiaries re all your bank accounts, insurance
policies and pension plans..especially long term accounts where information may have changed -
and alert your beneficiary(ies) to this
3)
You can endorse the back of your pink slip on your vehicle with a beneficiary's name so that
title will pass when you do;
4)
If your own your home joint tenancy make sure your spouse or family member knows what to do if
you pass..title does not automatically transfer..there is usually some paperwork to be filled out
with the county recorder;
5)
Keep all your important paperwork in a fireproof/waterproof safe..Note to those with minor children:
who will care for your babies if something happens to you? This should be part of your estate planning.
