http://www.spaindirecttravel.com/history.htm Around 1100BC, sophisticated Phoenicians arrived from what is now Lebanon, founding settlements at Cádiz and Málaga and introducing the concept of currency. Greek traders established colonies around 650BC, enjoying a brief period of wealth thanks to Andalucías rich mineral deposits. Olives and grapes, two important crops today, were introduced at this time. The Greeks were soon ousted by the Carthaginians, people fron Carthage (near present day Tunis) in North Africa, who moved in and occupied most of Andalucía, using the regions mineral wealth to finance a huge military presence. Under the General Hannibal, they prepared to attack Rome but were defeated in the Second Punic War in 214BC.
The Romans, vandals and visigoths
The Romans, welcomed by the Andalucían people in 210 BC, after years of oppression, begain to build on an unprecedented scale, transforming Andalucía into one of their richest and best organized colonies, which they called Betis, crisscrossing the region with paved roads. Roman galleys sailed up its main river, now called the Guadalquivir, as far as Córdoba. Remnants of which can be seen in the
aquaduct of Nerja, the roman theatre of Málaga and even in the N340 coastal highway, an early version of which connected Cádiz with
Rome. The region was named Baetica with Córdoba as its capital and 400 years of prosperity followed during which time the Latin
language, Roman law and Christianity became firmly established. The people enjoyed the fruits of a thriving industry in wine, olive oil,
wool and grain.
Eventually however the Roman Empire crumbled and Baetica was invaded by Barbarian tribes from northern europe. First to arrive in
409AD were the Vandals, who named the area Vandalusia, and shortly afterwards the Visigoths, a Germanic race of Aryan Christians ostensibly allied with Rome, who promptly claimed Roman lands for themselves and ruled for 300 years.
The Moors
The Moors, assorted Berber and North African tribes united by their Muslim faith, saw the opportunity to move into the still wealthy Vandalusia. In 711AD, under the leadership of Tariq, the then governer of Tangier, a vast Berber army crossed the Strait of Gibraltar
and forced the Visigoths north into the mountians close to Jerez. Some 800 years of Moorish rule followed in the newly named kingdom
of al-Andaluz.
The tolerant attitude of the Moors meant that Jews, Christians and Muslims lived in harmony and a period of great wealth and cultural development began, during which time the architecture, philosophy and learning developed quickly. Oranges and peaches were
cultivated and ceramics, leather and silverware were crafted. Rather than destroying what had gone on before them, the Moors used
Roman buildings as a basis for further development, adding their own style to form the astonishingly beautiful monuments that can be
seen today in Córdoba, Granada and Sevilla.
Everything begain to slowly fall apart around the 11th century. The ruler Abd-ar-Rahman III had established himself in 928 as Caliph of Córdoba but his weaker successors let the caliphate disintergrate until 1031AD, when it split up into a series of taifas, small kingdoms
which were constantly squabbling. The Christian armies of Northern Spain moved in and captured the Taifa of Toledo. The Moors had
to call for reinforcements, which brought a wave of Islamic fanaticism as the puritanical Almoravids from North Africa came into power in
1086. After 60 terrifying years, a more tolerant sect, the Almohads drove them out and set about rebuilding al-Andaluz, only to be
defeated themselves by the Christians in 1212, which was the beginning of the end for Moorish Spain. Over the next 290 years the
Moorish taifas of al-Andaluz were captured one by one by the Christian forces. The last enclave, Granada, was conquered in 1492,
the same year that Columbus landed in the West Indies. The New World had been discovered and Spain entered a new era under
they dynastic partnership of Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castile, Los Reyes Catolicos, or the Catholic Kings, as the were
dubbed by the Pope.
The History of Spain under Christian rule
Despite promises of religious freedom after the capture of Granada, Ferdinand and Isabella proceeded to persecute the Jews and
Muslims, eventually expelling anybody who would not freely convert to Christianity and causing those who had converted to flee in
terror.
Moorish land and possessions were divided among wealthy Christians, creating a system of land ownership which has dogged Andalucía ever since. While the rest of Spain basked in the glory of overseas conquests and their subsequent wealth, Andalucía deteriated and was subject to frequent Barbary pirate raids. People fled inland to the Sierras, neglecting the coast which once again became an uncultivated desert. In 1516 Carlos I, came to the throne a member of the Haspburg dynasty, and was elected, Carlos V, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. During his reign he neglected Spain in favour of Rome and the countries wealth was further drained.
A new inquisition under Felipe II and his successor, Felipe III, led to the final purging of the Muslims and Jews, depriving the country of
much skilled labour. The Spanish Armada was sunk in 1588 as Felipe II attempted to invade England and expensive forays into the New World forced Spain into further debt.
For the next 200 years, Spain was viewed by the rest of the World as a backward, insignificant place. The Bourbon dynasty replaced
the Spanish Kings during the War of the Spanish Succession and the English took Gibraltar in 1704. Spain fell under the influence of
France for nearly 100 years and following the Spanish defeat at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 off the coast of Cadiz, the French proceeded
to ransack the country of its wealth and architecural treasures. The French were finally driven out in the War of Independence in 1814,
aided by Britains Duke of Wellington. Then followed an era of coups and minor civil wars and the American colonies asserted their independence one by one, Cuba being the last to shake off Spanish rule in 1898.

The Moors are not a specific race of people. The word has never been clearly defined and remains ambiguous and confusing. This term has been broadly used to denote various people in North Africa, people who came from Morocco or simply to describe Muslims in general
Moreno is Spanish, Portuguese and Filipino for a tanned or dark or brown-skinned person. In origin the term was used to refer to a person with brown or black hair color, regardless of skin or eye color (synonym for Brunette), nowadays both meanings co-exist. It is also a Spanish and Italian surname and an Italian given name.
This word comes back to Latin and beyond to old Greek where "Mauri" are the inhabitants of "Mauretania or Mauritania", the name of North-Western Africa ( present Morocco and Mauritania ) "Mauri" turned into "Moros" in Spanish, hence "Moors" and "moorish" in English.

Is known as Black Africa in reference to its "black" populations. The term bilâd as-sûdân itself literally translates to "land of the blacks".
Unfortunately, Black Africans made no cultural contributions in Iberia. Black Africans in Spaniard and Lusitanian lands, and in other parts of Europe, were slaves and servants, in great part. That is the sad truth. "Moor" was (and is still today) a very ambiguous term used to describe a number of different peoples, but, predominantly North African types-Berber or Arab. Groups that are Caucasoid/Semetic/Hametic-essentially whites of non-European origin. Of course, the "Moors" did contain black african elements. In the Arab/Berber invasion of Visigothic Iberia (711), there were very small groups of black slaves and servants along with some freedmen. Later on, during the Almoravid advance in the 11th century, blacks from southern Morocco and Senegal were incorported into the fighting force, either as converts to Islam or mercenaries.

Well there are many pictures both artistic representations and actual photo's of black moors, i understand that morroco and that reigion of Africa was during the time of the muslim moors were not run by Black Africans, there is much evidence of Non Black africans being present in that part of Africa for thousands of years, however black people have always populated the north of Africa, Either that or all the rock art depicting black africans from as far back as 8,000 BC,
Without going into it to much the Generals who conquored spain were black moors that were sent to do the work of the sultan's, they also carried out construction work in moor controlled spain, however once moorish spain became desirable, The arab elites traveled to spain to take control and credit for the work that had been done to conquore and build.

For one nobody said anything about sub saharan africans. pluss the phrase Sub Saharan, is a term racist anthropologists have turned into a comonley and widley used phrase in order to be able to seperate africans and therfor say that all sub saharans are the real black africans therfor neglect the achivments of other black africans.
North Africa has always had a population of Black africans, nobody said anything about sub saharan africans.

Where did i say Moor means Black? the word Moor comes from the country "Mauritania" look up where this country is located, it was "controlled" by morocco but only a centry or two before the word moor was coinded by the greeks in around the late 13 hundreds it was part of the Malian empire, And it's main populouse were more related to west africans than anyone else "at that period of time".
It did not mean black, however it did mean Dark skinned, and later was used to describe all muslims indiscriminantly of skin colour, however it was a term originaly used for dark skinned people and was taken from a region that contained mostly black africans.
You seem to be quite upset at the idea that people of Black or at least Dark skin could have had any influence on Eurpean culture, why? you became very defensive about things that i hadn't even suggested.
However At the time many black people served the arab sultans "not like the chattel slavery of the atlantic trade" but more in a servent manner, also the ranks of their army's were filled with black africans (nobody said anything about sub saharan, though black africans come in all types just like caucasions do) And it was these black african soldiers and generals that were given charge of the invasions and occupation of parts of spain, "why should the sultans and their sons do the hard work when they can send others to do the work for them and then after the work is done come and claim their victorys"
Though I make no claim that the moorish invasions of spain pulled Europe out of the dark ages by it'self, it is safe to say that moorish spain for the most part was the most civilised part of Europe while it was there, also many European customs and ettitquette was taken from moorish spain. Such as using crystal wear at meals "actualy an african custom wich was absorbed into the arab world wich many people now take as an arab custom" the three course meal for example, carpeted floors instead of hey and straw"
to totaly neglect the good influences that moorish culture had on europe is like saying "what did the romans ever do for us?"
and by the way it wasn't the N word that was used and it wasn't coined by the romans either, it was coined by the spanish and the word was N-egro wich means black in spanish and is not a derogotary term, it is the same as saying caucasion, the word your thinking of was coined in the US wich was originaly meant as a derogatery term.

The reason why the term Sub saharan african is racist, is the the way it is used, granted if we were talking purley geography no sub saharan wouldn't be racist, though the term would of been south saharan.
Are black, west, east, south, north, central, africans different races, YES of course they are, infact there are numerouse black races within each region, and the races also cross borders from east to west, from north to south,
What you are implying as that anyone from bellow the saharan, or from west africa, are the only black people, any other people indiginouse to any other area in Africa are NOT black,
P.S. the berbers are not caucasoid, if anything they would be more typical of asiatic folks.

For somone who tries to seperate North Africa from the rest of Africa you seem like quite the hypocrit to start using "im from africa" being that you are pretty much as far away from north africa as can be.
And by your logic of north africans being of european (caucation decent) by your logic id be better place to talk about the North of Africa but lets put all that behind us shall we. Now i thought this discusion was about the moors, so lets get back to that shall we?
Alright so your argument was that there is no such thing as a black moor, where as my argument was based on the fact that the moors were not a racial group and consisted of arabs, berbers (of different races because berber is not a racial group) and Neegro Africans.
Now there is known to be a large migration of neegro africans into portugal between the eighth and thirteenth centuries from the mediterranean basin. This is becase of the BS haplotypes refuring to the sickle cell trait. Now the BS haplotypes of sickle cell are only reflective of one group, neegros.
The same BS haplotype sickle cell trait migrated into portugal again on a noticable scale, but this time after the 15th century (i.e. the atlantic slave trade)
How did this large migration of the BS haplotype sickle cell trait get to portugal between the eighth and thirteenth century being that this is a trait known only to the neegro race, and is identical to the influx during the atlantic slave trade,
If it was mainly caucation's, or even mostly Arab's that populated portugal then then this type of sickle cell would not be the most notable form in the country it would of been the asian or arab haplotype,
oh and by the way before you go of and say that i am lying or i don't know what i am talking about, this from the 1992 edition of the journal "human biology" and the name of the aritcal was "importation route of the sickle cell trait into portugal"
now if this trait got as far as portugal during the migration of the moors into hispanic europe it is also pretty safe to say that it went into spain aswell.
Instead of suggesting i learn from your chosen web sites i suggest you learn to open your mind to the possiblity that neegro's might of possibly achieved more than poughing cotten.

is what I would do.? it is hard to sleep at first but I think the meditation rests your mind, then

North Africa came into power in 1086. After 60 terrifying years, a more tolerant sect, the Almohads drove them out and set about rebuilding
al-Andaluz, only to be defeated themselves by the remnant Spanish Italian German French Christians in 1212, which was the beginning of
the end for Black Moorish Spain.
Over the next 290 years the Moorish taifas of al-Andaluz were captured one by one by the Alied Christian forces.
The last enclave, Granada, was conquered in 1492, the same year that Columbus landed in the West Indies bring with him the un precidented
Papal Bull he had purchased from Pope Inocent the III propoting to be authored by god himselfe granting rights to all lands pepoles and propperty yet
to be "discovered" in the "new Lands this meaant slavery for any "native" persons non christians or christian alike .
The New World had been "discovered" and Spain entered a new era under they dynastic partnership of Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castile,
Los Reyes Catolicos, or the Catholic Kings, as the were dubbed by the Pope for a handsom fee.
The History of Spain under Christian rule
Despite promises of religious freedom after the capture of Granada, Ferdinand and Isabella proceeded to persecute the Jews and Muslims,
eventually expelling anybody who would not freely convert to Christianity and causing those who had converted to flee in terror leaving there welth
to the "crown".
Black Moorish land and possessions were divided among wealthy Christians, creating a system of land ownership which has dogged
Andalucía ever since.
While the rest of Spain basked in the glory of overseas conquests and their subsequent wealth, Andalucía deteriated and was subject

A new inquisition under Felipe II and his successor, Felipe III, led to the final purging of the Muslims and Jews, depriving the country

Spain into further debt.
For the next 200 years, Spain was viewed by the rest of the World as a backward, insignificant place.
The Bourbon dynasty replaced the Spanish Kings during the War of the Spanish Succession and the English took Gibraltar in 1704.
Spain fell under the influence of France for nearly 100 years and following the Spanish defeat at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 off the
coast of Cadiz, the French proceeded to ransack the country of its wealth and architecural treasures.
The French were finally driven out in the War of Independence in 1814, aided by Britains Duke of Wellington.
Then followed an era of coups and minor civil wars and the American colonies asserted their independence one by one, Cuba being
the last to shake off Spanish rule in 1898.
