About Hydraulic Fracturing
Hydraulic fracturing, commonly referred to as fracing, is a proven technological advancement which allows natural gas producers to safely recover natural gas from deep shale formations. This discovery has the potential to not only dramatically reduce our reliance on foreign fuel imports, but also to significantly reduce our national carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and accelerate our transition to a carbon-light environment. Simply put, deep shale gas formation development is critical to America's energy needs and economic renewal.
Experts have known for years that natural gas deposits existed in deep shale formations, but until recently the vast quantities of natural gas in these formations were not thought to be recoverable. Today, through the use of hydraulic fracturing, combined with sophisticated horizontal drilling, extraordinary amounts of deep shale natural gas from across the United States are being safely produced.
Hydraulic fracturing has been used by the oil and gas industry since the 1940s and has become a key element of natural gas development worldwide. In fact, this process is used in nearly all natural gas wells drilled in the U.S. today. Properly conducted modern hydraulic fracturing is a safe, sophisticated, highly engineered and controlled procedure.

Water Usage
Water is an essential component of deep shale gas development during both the drilling and hydraulic fracturing, or fracing, processes. Chesapeake uses water for drilling, where a mixture of clay and water is used to carry rock cuttings to the surface, as well as to cool and lubricate the drillbit. Drilling a typical Chesapeake deep shale gas well requires between 65,000 and one million gallons of water. Water is also used in fracing where a mixture of water and sand is injected into the deep shale at a high pressure to create small cracks in the rock allowing gas to freely flow to the surface. Fracing a typical Chesapeake horizontal deep shale gas well requires an average of 3.5 million gallons per well.
Chesapeake utilizes several sources of water in deep shale gas exploration including rivers, creeks, lakes, discharge water from industrial or city wastewater treatment plants, groundwater and the re-use of fracturing water. The company often works directly with local officials to arrange water purchases from a municipality when drilling inside city limits. This water is typically transported via temporary pipelines or trucked to drilling locations for storage prior to use in tanks or impoundments. The overall mix of water sources used depends on the region and the availability of sources near drilling sites.
The natural gas industry is expected to increase total water usage by less than 1.5% in each shale gas area, and is well within available resources in the region. The largest water users are municipalities (public water supply), power generation, industrial users and agriculture. However, the magnitude of these uses varies widely from region to region. For example, in the Barnett Shale area of Texas, municipal uses account for more than 80% of water use, with agriculture accounting for more than 5%. In the Marcellus Shale area of the Appalachian Basin, power generation accounts for more than 70% of water consumption, while agriculture accounts for approximately one tenth of one percent (0.10%). Water used in Chesapeake deep shale gas differs most notably from all other uses because it is temporary, occurring only during the drilling and completion phases of each well. Use of this water does not represent a long-term commitment of the resource. Other water users typically consume water for years, decades or even longer.
How Much Is 3.5 Million Gallons?
The 3.5 million gallons of water needed to drill and fracture a typical deep shale gas well is equivalent to the amount of water consumed by:
- New York City in approximately five minutes
- A 1,000 megawatt coal-fired power plant in 8.75 hours
- A golf course in eight days
- Six acres of corn in a season
While these represent continuing consumption, the water used for a gas well is a one-time use. http://www.hydraulicfracturing.com/Water-Usage/Pages/Information.aspx

Subject: macro pore, meso pore and micro pore.
Activated carbon is the carbon material that has adsorption performance with a lot of micro pores on its surface. It is widely adopted in the industrial fields related to air and water and sewage cleanup in order to remove the odor in the air and the contaminant in water taking advantage of its adsorptivity.
Pore of activated carbon
1 gram of activated carbon has the surface area as large as 1,000m2, equivalent to the area of four tennis courts.
Pore of activated carbon is classified into three types, macro pore, meso pore and micro pore. Each pore has a different function. One of them, the micro pore is very fine around 1nm and 1gram of the activated carbon has 1,000m2 of surface area. Wider surface area has higher adsorptive property.
Applications of activated carbon
Activated carbon useful for the environment
Activated carbon contributes to environmental protection in Japan as well as all over the world thanks to the adsorptive property of micro pore on activated carbon. The main applications are to help create pleasant envornment for living, while people do not notice, through improving the water quality, deodorizing, and removing soil contaminant and dioxin.

Cartoon Laws of Physics Authorship Unknown
Cartoon Laws of Physics http://www.betterbadnews.com/ http://www.timmatheson.com/2006/05/pentagon-911-video-released/
http://www-static.cc.gatech.edu/classes/cs8113f_97_spring/cartoon.html
Cartoon Law I Any body suspended in space will remain in space until made aware of its situation. Daffy Duck steps off a cliff, expecting further pastureland. He loiters in midair, soliloquizing flippantly, until he chances to look down. At this point, the familiar principle of 32 feet per second per second takes over.
Cartoon Law II Any body in motion will tend to remain in motion until solid matter intervenes suddenly. Whether shot from a cannon or in hot pursuit on foot, cartoon characters are so absolute in their momentum that only a telephone pole or an outsize boulder retards their forward motion absolutely. Sir Isaac Newton called this sudden termination of motion the stooge's surcease.
Cartoon Law III Any body passing through solid matter will leave a perforation conforming to its perimeter. Also called the silhouette of passage, this phenomenon is the specialty of victims of directed-pressure explosions and of reckless cowards who are so eager to escape that they exit directly through the wall of a house, leaving a cookie-cutout-perfect hole. The threat of skunks or matrimony often catalyzes this reaction.
Cartoon Law IV The time required for an object to fall twenty stories is greater than or equal to the time it takes for whoever knocked it off the ledge to spiral down twenty flights to attempt to capture it unbroken. Such an object is inevitably priceless, the attempt to capture it inevitably unsuccessful.
Cartoon Law V All principles of gravity are negated by fear. Psychic forces are sufficient in most bodies for a shock to propel them directly away from the earth's surface. A spooky noise or an adversary's signature sound will induce motion upward, usually to the cradle of a chandelier, a treetop, or the crest of a flagpole. The feet of a character who is running or the wheels of a speeding auto need never touch the ground, especially when in flight.
Cartoon Law VI As speed increases, objects can be in several places at once. This is particularly true of tooth-and-claw fights, in which a character's head may be glimpsed emerging from the cloud of altercation at several places simultaneously. This effect is common as well among bodies that are spinning or being throttled. A `wacky' character has the option of self-replication only at manic high speeds and may ricochet off walls to achieve the velocity required.
Cartoon Law VII Certain bodies can pass through solid walls painted to resemble tunnel entrances; others cannot. This trompe l'oeil inconsistency has baffled generations, but at least it is known that whoever paints an entrance on a wall's surface to trick an opponent will be unable to pursue him into this theoretical space. The painter is flattened against the wall when he attempts to follow into the painting. This is ultimately a problem of art, not of science.
Cartoon Law VIII Any violent rearrangement of feline matter is impermanent. Cartoon cats possess even more deaths than the traditional nine lives might comfortably afford. They can be decimated, spliced, splayed, accordion-pleated, spindled, or disassembled, but they cannot be destroyed. After a few moments of blinking self pity, they reinflate, elongate, snap back, or solidify. Corollary: A cat will assume the shape of its container.
Cartoon Law IX Everything falls faster than an anvil.
Cartoon Law X For every vengeance there is an equal and opposite revengeance. This is the one law of animated cartoon motion that also applies to the physical world at large. For that reason, we need the relief of watching it happen to a duck instead.
Cartoon Law Amendment A A sharp object will always propel a character upward. When poked (usually in the buttocks) with a sharp object (usually a pin), a character will defy gravity by shooting straight up, with great velocity.
Cartoon Law Amendment B The laws of object permanence are nullified for "cool" characters. Characters who are intended to be "cool" can make previously nonexistent objects appear from behind their backs at will. For instance, the Road Runner can materialize signs to express himself without speaking.
Cartoon Law Amendment C Explosive weapons cannot cause fatal injuries. They merely turn characters temporarily black and smoky.
Cartoon Law Amendment D Gravity is transmitted by slow-moving waves of large wavelengths. Their operation can be witnessed by observing the behavior of a canine suspended over a large vertical drop. Its feet will begin to fall first, causing its legs to stretch. As the wave reaches its torso, that part will begin to fall, causing the neck to stretch. As the head begins to fall, tension is released and the canine will resume its regular proportions until such time as it strikes the ground.
Cartoon Law Amendment E Dynamite is spontaneously generated in "C-spaces" (spaces in which cartoon laws hold). The process is analogous to steady-state theories of the universe which postulated that the tensions involved in maintaining a space would cause the creation of hydrogen from nothing. Dynamite quanta are quite large (stick sized) and unstable (lit). Such quanta are attracted to psychic forces generated by feelings of distress in "cool" characters (see Amendment B, which may be a special case of this law), who are able to use said quanta to their advantage. One may imagine C-spaces where all matter and energy result from primal masses of dynamite exploding. A big bang indeed.

To: IAHF LIST Subject: Robert Lederers "Apology" to the CIA Controlled Media From: "International Advocates for Health Freedom" jham@iahf.com Date: Sat, 16 Sep 2000 20:45:56 -0400IAHF LIST: Robert Lederer has been exposing the genocidal spraying in NYC to control the West Nile Virus, (which CIA created) and he comes to some interesting conclusions about the degree of CIA involvement in our mediahere that are well researched and very much worth being aware of.Robert Ledererman's Apology to the Mediahttp://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/8425/CIAPRESS.HTM#topBoy, do I feel stupid. I've been blaming hard-working reporters for biased coverage of the West Nile Virus issue, their silence on the Manhattan Institute's Nazi-CIA-Eugenics link and for refusing to report on the Bush family's close connection to Hitler. In my naivete I was implying that the CIA was somehow influencing their coverage.
How ignorant can one person get? Now I know better. After following a series of leads starting from an obscure article found on the internet the whole issue is much clearer and I can announce my findings. The media is not influenced by the CIA-the media is the CIA. Not that I can claim any credit for this insight. There are hundreds of carefully researched articles and even entire books about this subject-not to mention a Congressional report specifically about it.What began the process of pulling the blinders from my eyes was one sentence in a press release announcing Ronald Reagan's nomination of William Casey-the founder of the Manhattan Institute-to be his Director of the CIA.The release mentioned that among Mr. Casey's many accomplishments was that he ran the Reagan campaign, conducted secret intelligence operations during WWII [with Nazi ally and board member of I.G. Farben, Allen Dulles] was the chair of Operation Rescue [a CIA front which helped thousands of former Nazis emigrate to the U.S.], and manipulated the stock market as chair of the Securities and Exchange Commission. It went on to note that Casey was also the lead counsel [and as I later found out-top stockholder] in Capital Cities, the communications company that owned ABC until it was bought by Disney in 1996. He held that textbook example of a conflict of interest position while serving as CIA director.Following that lead I found that many of Capital Cities founders were also formerly involved in intelligence, many of them having worked with Casey under Allen Dulles-the first CIA director. In other words, ABC was owned by the CIA during the Gulf War and throughout the Reagan, Bush and much of the Clinton administrations.
It was bought in 1996 by Disney, a company with many allegations of its own to having a CIA-mind control connection, whose creator had long been considered an FBI informer.

Billions of people will face severe water shortages as glaciers around the world melt unless governments take urgent action to tackle global warming, the environmental group WWF said Thursday, ahead of a UN conference on climate change."Increasing global temperatures in the coming century will cause continued widespread melting of glaciers, which contain 70 percent of the world's fresh water reserves," it warned in a new study."An overall rise of temperature of four degrees Celsius before the end of the century would eliminate almost all of them," it said.Average temperatures have risen between 0.6 and 0.7 degrees Celsius since 1860, according to WWF, which urged countries to curb emissions of carbon dioxide to ensure the increase stays well below a threshold of two degrees. The Switzerland-based conservation group released its study on climate change and global glacier decline in Milan where more than 180 countries are due to gather from December 1-12 for the UN Climate Change Convention to assess progress in addressing problems concerning global warming."The melting of glaciers will lead to water shortages for billions of people, as well as sea levels rising and destroying coastal communities worldwide," WWF said.Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia, where major cities rely on glaciers a their main source of waterduring dry seasons, would be worst affected, it predicted. In the Himalayas, there was a grave danger of flooding, the group said, noting that glacier-fed rivers in the region supply water to one third of the world's population."Glacial meltdown is a clear sign that we must act now to fight global warming and stop the melting," said Jennifer Morgan, director of WWF's climate change programme. The environmental organisation called on the ministers who will attend the Milan conference to act faster to combat global warming, urging those from developing nations in particular to demonstrate their will to tackle the issue.WWF wants strong rules governing the use of forests, which play a vital role in absorbing carbon dioxide. The group also asked governments to ensure Russia ratifies the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, which establishes a set of goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Already ratified by 119 countries, the text just needs a commitment from Moscow to become international law, it said.On Tuesday, Italian officials said the European Union has pledged 390 million dollars (325 million euros) a year to help developing countries from 2005 fight the damaging effects of climate change. In 2001, 20 countries including the 15 EU members pledged to provide 410 million dollars annually to poorer countries until 2005. Re: Suggestion http://rdmag.com/ShowPR.aspx?PUBCODE=014&ACCT=1400000101&ISSUE=0807&RELTYPE=MIC&PRODCODE=00000000&PRODLETT=V&CommonCount=0 Tiny microscope fits on your finger July 29, 2008Researchers at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) have turned science fiction into reality with their development of a super-compact high-resolution microscope, small enough to fit on a fingertip. This "microscopic microscope" operates without lenses but has the magnifying power of a top-quality optical microscope, can be used in the field to analyze blood samples for malaria or check water supplies for giardia and other pathogens, and can be mass-produced for around $10. "The whole thing is truly compact—it could be put in a cell phone—and it can use just sunlight for illumination, which makes it very appealing for Third-World applications," says Changhuei Yang, assistant professor of electrical engineering and bioengineering at Caltech, who developed the device, dubbed an optofluidic microscope. The new instrument combines traditional computer-chip technology with microfluidics--the channeling of fluid flow at incredibly small scales. An entire optofluidic microscope chip is about the size of a quarter, although the part of the device that images objects is only the size of Washington's nose on that quarter. "Our research is motivated by the fact that microscopes have been around since the 16th century, and yet their basic design has undergone very little change and has proven prohibitively expensive to miniaturize. Our new design operates on a different principle and allows us to do away with lenses and bulky optical elements," says Yang. The fabrication of the microscopic chip is disarmingly simple. A layer of metal is coated onto a grid of charge-coupled device (CCD). Then, a line of tiny holes, less than 1 µm in diameter, is punched into the metal, spaced 5 µm apart. Each hole corresponds to one pixel on the sensor array. A microfluidic channel, through which the liquid containing the sample to be analyzed will flow, is added on top of the metal and sensor array. The entire chip is illuminated from above; sunlight is sufficient. When the sample is added, it flows—either by the simple force of gravity or drawn by an electric charge—horizontally across the line of holes in the metal. As cells or small organisms cross over the holes, one hole after another, the objects block the passage of light from above onto the sensor below. This produces a series of images, consisting of light and shadow, akin to the output of a pinhole camera. Because the holes are slightly skewed, so that they create a diagonal line with respect to the direction of flow, the images overlap slightly. All of the images are then pieced together to create a surprisingly precise 2-D picture of the object. Yang is now in discussion with biotech companies to mass-produce the chip. The platform into which the chip is integrated can vary depending upon the needs of the user. For example, health workers in rural areas could carry cheap, compact models to test individuals for malaria, and disposable versions could be carried into the battlefield. "We could build hundreds or thousands of optofluidic microscopes onto a single chip, which would allow many organisms to be imaged and analyzed at once," says Xiquan Cui, the lead graduate student on the project. In the future, the microscope chips could be incorporated into devices that are implanted into the human body. "An implantable microscope analysis system can autonomously screen for and isolate rogue cancer cells in blood circulation, thus, providing important diagnostic information and helping arrest the spread of cancer," says Yang. Ztretch music controller MAS 960 Fall 2006 taught by Joe Paradiso and Dave Merrill
Idea: Stretchy fabric as a music controller There has been much prior research on integrating electronics into textiles. However, I felt that many of these projects did not take into account the usability and interactivity of the fabric. Much of the prior work is focused on rigid, exact places for touching the fabric, rather than supporting the many actions our hands and bodies can create. Thus, I wanted to make a device that could capture the richness of active touch interactions. These haptic interactions could be used to create expressive music.
Implementation Fabric stitch:
A few test stictches on Bekaert fabric were made to determine the resistivity with regards to stitch type and change in length of stretch was determined. My Brother LS-2125sewing machine had 10 types of stitches, so I tried them all. Ztretch music controller MAS 960 Fall 2006 taught by Joe Paradiso and Dave Merrill
