Sestak Delay Iraq war Perle news politics society Duration: 15:28Taken: 19 March 2007Location:
United StatesThanks to Crooks & Liars for this clip.
Sestak tells Delay to stop banging his head against the wall
That's the way he phrased it to Delay, who was telling Sestak that he was favoring
surrender in Iraq. WTF is Delay doing on MTP anyway? As you watch him, you can see
his FOX NEWS techniques look worn and useless. He repeats the same talking points
as before…Russert points out that Delay praised Rumsfeld in his book. Tommy got a
little miffed for being interrupted… There is a lot to talk about in this clip…
Another neocon (Perle) spewed forth his venom of destruction…
FMR. REP. DeLAY: "This is hard, so I want to surrender."
REP. SESTAK: Absolutely not.
FMR. REP. DeLAY: That's exactly what it is.
REP. SESTAK: You never just keep banging your head against the wall, we learn
in the military. Is there a better way to go about it? And that's what this bill
does is it takes the last leverage we have to make it happen.

Iraq: The Hidden Story

What the media isn't showing in Iraq: (h/t Hardliner)
It's a gut-wrenching 49 minutes, but worth your time.
Americans, these actions are being done in our name.
This is our legacy.
My hope is that showing videos such as this one and bringing you the information
that the traditional media downplays or hides that it propel you to take action.
Call your elected officials, even if they are Republicans. Demand that
they stand by their actions in the face of reality, instead of White House spin.
Write them. Email them. Call news organizations and demand the same.
The Beltway media and politicians are insulated and isolated.
It's going to take a huge tidal wave from outside the Beltway for them to wake up.
Please, please …email this to every person you know, no matter what side of the
war/occupation they fall in.

shows BBC reporter Jane Standley talking about the collapse of the Salomon Brothers Building while it
remains standing in the live shot behind her head. (as you are looking at the video..Building 7 is on

Minutes before the actual collapse of the building is due, the feed to the reporter mysteriously dies.

Aboriginal Dreamtime
INTRODUCTION
Some two thousand generations of men and women have lived and died since the first Aboriginal
walked upon the soil of this land, now known as Australia. Think of your mother or father,
your grandparents, then your great grandparents. Now, including you, that makes four generations,
and goes back over 100 years. to go back as far as the first Aboriginal, you need to go back over
40,000 years. That's a very long time indeed!
The Aboriginal people speak in many different languages - about two hundred and thirty have been
counted - and an enormous number of dialects in each of those languages. There are several reasons
why there are so many different languages. Firstly, in spite of the size of Australia the number
of Aboriginal people has always been few - about 300,000 Aboriginals were in Australia when the
first European settlers arrived in the 1780s. This number of people would fit into one large town
today, but the Aboriginal people were scattered in tribes all over the country. These tribes lived
so far apart that they did not need a common language, and thus each developed a different one.
Secondly, the Aboriginal people have never used a written language. To communicate, they talked,
but they never wrote letters or books. This meant there was no common written language or alphabet
for all tribes like thee is for the English, Greeks, or Italians. All the world's peoples have a
concept of how the world was formed. The Aboriginals believe that, in the beginning, the earth was
featureless, flat and grey. There were no mountain ranges, no rivers, no billabongs, no birds or
animals - in fact not one living thing. Then long, long ago came the Dreamtime. The Dreamtime was
a time when giant creatures rose up out of the grey plains where they had been slumbering for
countless ages. These mythical Beings looked like animals or plants or insects, but they behaved
just like humans. They wandered across the vast grey wastes, digging for water and searching for
food and as they searched, because of their giant size, they made huge ravines and rivers in the
land. Thus the world took on the shape it has today.
Aboriginal people believe that in the Dreamtime the traditional Aboriginal way of life was
established by these mythical Beings: this way of life is still followed in traditional Aboriginal
society today. They believe that their ancestors were taught about their tribal lands by the mythical
Beings, and were told how they, as descendants of these Beings, should behave. This was their Dreamtime
and this teaching is as important to them as the "Ten commandments were to the ancient Hebrews.
The Dreamtime ended, no one knows how or why, and time and life, as we know it, began. For Aboriginal
people the land has a very special meaning for all over the land there are features which are reminders
of those giant Beings of the Dreamtime. When they see a mountain or river, a rock or a tree, they think
of the mythical Beings that had a part in their own creation. The Aboriginals believe that they are
directly descended from these mythical Being. When the Dreamtime ended, the people were left with a
social and cultural heritage which came from their ancestors. All the rites and ceremonies are, and
always were, aimed at preserving this heritage. Their ancestors from the Dreamtime also gave them
possession of tribal lands, and hence tribal land, and all forms of life contained within it, are
regarded as a sacred trust.

"Pachipro" - Making A Living Playing Pachinko
Pachinko, an upright pinball machine, is a "legalized" form of gambling in Japan where gambling is
illegal and today, if one is lucky and knows when to quit, it is possible to make a living out of
playing it. This is the story of how I survived for about ten months playing only pachinko.

Whites Swim In Racial Preference
by Tim Wise; Alternet; February 23, 2003
Ask a fish what water is and you'll get no answer. Even if fish were capable of speech, they would likely
have no explanation for the element they swim in every minute of every day of their lives. Water simply is.
Fish take it for granted.
So too with this thing we hear so much about, "racial preference."
While many whites seem to think the notion originated with affirmative action programs, intended to expand
opportunities for historically marginalized people of color, racial preference has actually had a long and very
white history.
Affirmative action for whites was embodied in the abolition of European indentured servitude, which left black
(and occasionally indigenous) slaves as the only unfree labor in the colonies that would become the U.S.
Affirmative action for whites was the essence of the 1790 Naturalization Act, which allowed virtually any European
immigrant to become a full citizen, even while blacks, Asians and American Indians could not.
Affirmative action for whites was the guiding principle of segregation, Asian exclusion laws, and the theft of half
of Mexico for the fulfillment of Manifest Destiny.
In recent history, affirmative action for whites motivated racially restrictive housing
policies that helped 15 million white families procure homes with FHA loans
from the 1930s to the '60s, while people of color were mostly excluded from the
same programs.
In other words, it is hardly an exaggeration to say that white America is the biggest collective recipient of racial
preference in the history of the cosmos. It has skewed our laws, shaped our public policy and helped create the
glaring inequalities with which we still live.
White families, on average, have a net worth that is 11 times the net worth of black families, according to a
recent study; and this gap remains substantial even when only comparing families of like size, composition,
education and income status.
A full-time black male worker in 2003 makes less in real dollar terms than similar white men were earning in
1967. Such realities are not merely indicative of the disadvantages faced by blacks, but indeed are evidence
of the preferences afforded whites - a demarcation of privilege that is the necessary flipside of discrimination.
Indeed, the value of preferences to whites over the years is so enormous that the current baby-boomer
generation of whites is currently in the process of inheriting between $7-10 trillion in assets from their
parents and grandparents - property handed down by those who were able to accumulate assets at a
time when people of color by and large could not.
To place this in the proper perspective, we should note that this amount of money is more than all the
outstanding mortgage debt, all the credit card debt, all the savings account assets, all the money in IRAs
and 401k retirement plans, all the annual profits for U.S. manufacturers, and our entire merchandise trade
deficit combined. Yet few whites have ever thought of our position as resulting from racial preferences.
Indeed, we pride ourselves on our hard work and ambition, as if somehow we invented the concepts.
As if we have worked harder than the folks who were forced to pick cotton and build levies for free; harder
than the Latino immigrants who spend 10 hours a day in fields picking strawberries or tomatoes; harder than
the (mostly) women of color who clean hotel rooms or change bedpans in hospitals, or the (mostly) men of
color who collect our garbage.
We strike the pose of self-sufficiency while ignoring the advantages we have been afforded in every realm of
activity: housing, education, employment, criminal justice, politics, banking and business. We ignore the fact
that at almost every turn, our hard work has been met with access to an opportunity structure denied to millions
of others. Privilege, to us, is like water to the fish: invisible precisely because we cannot imagine life without it.
It is that context that best explains the duplicity of the President's recent criticisms of affirmative action at the
University of Michigan.
President Bush, himself a lifelong recipient of affirmative action - the kind set aside for the mediocre rich - recently
proclaimed that the school's policies were examples of unfair racial preference. Yet in doing so he not only showed
a profound ignorance of the Michigan policy, but made clear the inability of yet another white person to grasp the
magnitude of white privilege still in operation.
The President attacked Michigan's policy of awarding 20 points (on a 150-point evaluation scale) to undergraduate
applicants who are members of underrepresented minorities (which at U of M means blacks, Latinos and American
Indians). To many whites such a "preference" is blatantly discriminatory.
Bush failed to mention that greater numbers of points are awarded for other things that amount to preferences for
whites to the exclusion of people of color.
For example, Michigan awards 20 points to any student from a low-income background, regardless of race. Since
these points cannot be combined with those for minority status (in other words poor blacks don't get 40 points), in
effect this is a preference for poor whites.
Then Michigan awards 16 points to students who hail from the Upper Peninsula of the state: a rural, largely isolated,
and almost completely white area.
Of course both preferences are fair, based as they are on the recognition that economic status and even geography
(as with race) can have a profound effect on the quality of K-12 schooling that one receives, and that no one should
be punished for things that are beyond their control. But note that such preferences - though disproportionately
awarded to whites - remain uncriticized, while preferences for people of color become the target for reactionary anger.
Once again, white preference remains hidden because it is more subtle, more ingrained, and isn't called white
preference, even if that's the effect.
But that's not all. Ten points are awarded to students who attended top-notch high schools, and another eight points
are given to students who took an especially demanding AP and honors curriculum.
As with points for those from the Upper Peninsula, these preferences may be race-neutral in theory, but in practice
they are anything but. Because of intense racial isolation (and Michigan's schools are the most segregated in America
for blacks, according to research by the Harvard Civil Rights Project), students of color will rarely attend the "best"
schools, and on average, schools serving mostly black and Latino students offer only a third as many AP and honors
courses as schools serving mostly whites.
So even truly talented students of color will be unable to access those extra points simply because of where they live,
their economic status and ultimately their race, which is intertwined with both.
Four more points are awarded to students who have a parent who attended the U of M: a kind of affirmative action with
which the President is intimately familiar, and which almost exclusively goes to whites.
Ironically, while alumni preference could work toward the interest of diversity if combined with aggressive race-based
affirmative action (by creating a larger number of black and brown alums), the rollback of the latter, combined with the
almost guaranteed retention of the former, will only further perpetuate white preference.
So the U of M offers 20 "extra" points to the typical black, Latino or indigenous applicant, while offering various
combinations worth up to 58 extra points for students who will almost all be white. But while the first of these are seen
as examples of racial preferences, the second are not, hidden as they are behind the structure of social inequities that
limit where people live, where they go to school, and the kinds of opportunities they have been afforded. White
preferences, the result of the normal workings of a racist society, can remain out of sight and out of mind, while the
power of the state is turned against the paltry preferences meant to offset them.
Very telling is the oft-heard comment by whites, "If I had only been black I would have gotten into my first-choice
college."
Such a statement not only ignores the fact that whites are more likely than members of any other group - even with
affirmative action in place - to get into their first-choice school, but it also presumes, as anti-racist activist Paul
Marcus explains, "that if these whites were black, everything else about their life would have remained the same."
In other words, that it would have made no negative difference as to where they went to school, what their famil
income was, or anything else.
The ability to believe that being black would have made no difference (other than a beneficial one when it came tim
for college), and that being white has made no positive difference, is rooted in privilege itself: the privilege that allows
one to not have to think about race on a daily basis; to not have one's intelligence questioned by best- selling books;
to not have to worry about being viewed as a "out of place" when driving, shopping, buying a home, or for that matter,
attending the University of Michigan.
So long as those privileges remain firmly in place and the preferential treatment that flows from those privileges
continues to work to the benefit of whites, all talk of ending affirmative action is not only premature but a slap in
the face to those who have fought, and died, for equal opportunity.

I am a person born in the aftermath of Hitler's madness and the Atom Bomb; into a
world of McCarthyism and the Korean War.
My boyhood years were circumscribed by an era that took only minor strides toward
justice; where Civil Rights had to be and still has to be demanded by a people who
were enslaved.
I came of age only to see my country engaged in an unjust war in Vietnam --
assassinating any progressive voice.
I've watched my friends and people all over the world dying of AIDS, WAR,
DISCRIMINATION and POVERTY, because of apathy. I'm living in a society where greed
is rewarded at the expense of Human Rights, Education, our Environment, our Health;
where the Homeless have become the accepted norm.
I do not, I will not, accept this. I have spoken out and will continue to do so.
This is who I am as the person; this is who I am as the artist.

Bo Bartlett's paintings represent Academy style to the nth degree.
So it has come to pass that the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts
is right now exhibiting "Heartland," a show of more than 40 works
by this favorite son (image, "Heartland"), that has the feeling
of Norman Rockwell and the pigtailed, freckled blond on the Kellogg's
cornflakes box.
The paintings are mostly huge things, unfit for any of the walls in my
little ol' house, all painted beautifully. They aspire,
with their size, to say something big. And some of them do.
But many of them are just oversized.

Heartland: Kellogg's cornflakes, Norman Rockwell, Andrew Wyeth
Post by libby
Bo Bartlett's paintings represent Academy style to the nth degree. So it has come to pass that the Pennsylvania
Academy of Fine Arts is right now exhibiting "Heartland," a show of more than 40 works by this favorite son
(image, "Heartland"), that has the feeling of Norman Rockwell and the pigtailed, freckled blond on the Kellogg's
cornflakes box.
The paintings are mostly huge things, unfit for any of the walls in my little ol' house, all painted beautifully. They
aspire, with their size, to say something big. And some of them do. But many of them are just oversized.
Rituals
Given the religious themes of his paintings, it's no surprise that so many of his paintings are of rituals--the school
reenactment of the three wisemen spotting the star in the East, weddings (and weddings and weddings), a female
Christ post crucifixion, the obligitory snapshot after the Homecoming game of the three power couples on campus
in front of the bonfire (image, "The Wedding").
Of that group of paintings, the school reenactment, which has a Norman Rockwell air of description and down-home
folks, seems the least silly of the scenarios. It's pretty straightforward, and the children and their teacher, caught
glancing one way or another, provide an image of a classic American experience through specific kids and a specific
teacher.
Snapshots
That snapshot quality of moments frozen in time, glances and facial expressions trapped in the moment of a shutter
snapping, also carries along "The Box," a picture of children dressing up in war memoribilia stored in a wooden box,
and also carries "Sightland," in which a father takes aim with his rifle somewhere in the distance while the son's
focus is on the artist or picture taker. I liked the modesty and reality of the storytelling in these two. They are
bits of Americana.
Religion lost
But while Bartlett seems to want to be the Rembrandt and Caravaggio of the American story--the land, the culture, the
ideals, the myths--he lacks the backstory of the Bible that Rembrandt and Caravaggio had as a cultural commonplace.
Everyone knew back then on viewing a painting of Jesus coming down from the cross just what had happened. But what
does it mean when a young woman is coming down from the cross? What does Bartlett's "Leviathan" mean? I don't
know who this Jonah really is or why he's washed up on the coast posing on the all-too-real innards of the whale(image "Leviathan").It just seems pretentious.
So do "Dreamland" and "The Bone," which also have a histrionic quality. "The Bone" just seems pumped up, the bone
obviously a symbol of who knows what; and "Dreamland" has too many characters, too many costumes, too many ideas all
painted too seriously. Fellini did the human comedy parade with a lighter touch (image left, "Dreamland").
In "Homecoming," the looming effigy of the devil, the two men looking away, the young boy, the three cheerleaders, the
intense sunset sky, the convertible car, all seem to overwhelm the basic ritual, which stands quite nicely by itself.
The painting is a kind of religious triptych, the three couples surrounded on each wing by three outsiders. But it's
without the backing of the religious meaning and without the focus of one clear subject.
Humor helps
The Rockwellian caricature that works in the school play also contributes to the "Listeners," a picture of three blind
men on a hay cart, their red-tipped canes dowsing like insect antennae for what's around them. The humor undercuts the
otherwise ponderous big theme of humanity trying to listen for its place in the universe. The heroic cow icon in "The
Calling" is leavened by its ridiculousness--without losing its meaning.
(The talismans encased in the frames like the windows in African nkisi figures--the cow's horn, the deer skin, the twigs
in "The Calling," "Young Life," and "Heartland" respectively seem like too small a gesture for the competing canvas and
frame.)
Specific details
"Painters Crossing," shows Bartlett's mentor Andrew Wyeth, standing close to his wife, Betsy, with model Helga Testorf
standing apart behind them. The painting is provocative, the composition, with its rich furs and quoted landscape expresses
wealth, privilege, success, inclusion and exclusion--not to mention a salute to Wyeth's paintings. The story is well-known
enough to be accessible.
Other portraits that seemed especially good were "Ishmael" (above right) and of "Parents" (left) I love the way his mother
closed her eyes in weary sufferance, and the way his father put his hands in his pockets, an expression of casual-seeming
power--just one of the good ol' boys. Meanwhile, they're turned away from one another. "Ishmael," with his pea coat and
wind-whipped hair has a timeless look that situates him in Flemish portraits of the 15th century, in "Moby Dick" and in
the here and now.
Another simple success is "Lifeboat." The meaning is clear enough and the image, with its lost horizon and vertiginous waves,
the wedding ring on a chain around the rowers neck, put me back into the existential boat in the waves in "The Triplets of
Belleville."
I suppose what I'm saying is that the simpler Bartlett gets, the better he gets. The successes are individual and idiosyncratic
enough to feel grounded in the kind of realistic painting he does so well. When he adds elements that feel too unrealistic,
the story slips out of his grasp--and mine.

Plaything for a child or infant.
Toys survive from the remote past and from a great variety of cultures.
They range from the simple to the complex, from a stick or piece of string
that becomes a toy in a child's hands to complex mechanical and electronic
devices. Perennial favorites include balls, jump ropes, dolls, drums,
whistles, dice, jackstones, board games, marbles, play weapons, and costumes.
In the modern era the toy industry has grown tremendously, especially with
the advent of computer games.

Joseph Cornell as Maker »
Picture This: David Beck
January 12, 2007
David Beck's MVSEVM
Joseph Cornell paved the way for artists like David Beck. Beck was commissioned to create MVSEVM to commemorate the reopening of the Smithsonian American Art Museum in July of this year, and Cornell's influence is apparent: when closed, the model takes the shape of the Old Patent Office Building, but it opens to reveal miniature artifacts and artworks as well as drawers containing smaller models. Cornell invited sculptors to investigate the interior space of a sculpture—to investigate its moving parts, its guts. Beck complies.
The artist's other work at American Art is Movie Palace, which is on view in the Luce Center. Inside the tiny theater plays an animation showing moviegoers looking for seats, viewers snacking on popcorn and soda, and a couple making out, while King Kong plays on the screen. The opulent movie house is made with linden, walnut, and boxwood marquetry, as well as exotic natural materials like seashells and egg shells; his magpie approach to materials recalls Cornell directly.
Funky Christmas
Merry Christmas to all my protestant readers! I hope no matter what
you consider yourself, you are enjoying time with family and friends this season!
First night home with Lucy was pretty brutal, but last night was easy-
peasy, so hopefully we've turned the corner.

he doesn't know about them, but I remember them all. I
saw Brown live here in Indianapolis a few years back and
he still had the funk, the soul and the rhythm. It was a
spectacle to say the least. The Godfather may be responsible
for bringing MJ and I together so many years ago...at least laying the
groundwork. Thanks for a wonderful life and innumerable contributions
to the music community Mr. Brown.
