Tiny microscope fits on your finger
July 29, 2008
Researchers at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) have turned science fiction into reality with their development of a super-compact high-resolution microscope, small enough to fit on a fingertip. This "microscopic microscope" operates without lenses but has the magnifying power of a top-quality optical microscope, can be used in the field to analyze blood samples for malaria or check water supplies for giardia and other pathogens, and can be mass-produced for around $10.
"The whole thing is truly compact—it could be put in a cell phone—and it can use just sunlight for illumination, which makes it very appealing for Third-World applications," says Changhuei Yang, assistant professor of electrical engineering and bioengineering at Caltech, who developed the device, dubbed an optofluidic microscope.
The new instrument combines traditional computer-chip technology with microfluidics--the channeling of fluid flow at incredibly small scales. An entire optofluidic microscope chip is about the size of a quarter, although the part of the device that images objects is only the size of Washington's nose on that quarter.
"Our research is motivated by the fact that microscopes have been around since the 16th century, and yet their basic design has undergone very little change and has proven prohibitively expensive to miniaturize. Our new design operates on a different principle and allows us to do away with lenses and bulky optical elements," says Yang.
The fabrication of the microscopic chip is disarmingly simple. A layer of metal is coated onto a grid of charge-coupled device (CCD). Then, a line of tiny holes, less than 1 µm in diameter, is punched into the metal, spaced 5 µm apart. Each hole corresponds to one pixel on the sensor array. A microfluidic channel, through which the liquid containing the sample to be analyzed will flow, is added on top of the metal and sensor array. The entire chip is illuminated from above; sunlight is sufficient.
When the sample is added, it flows—either by the simple force of gravity or drawn by an electric charge—horizontally across the line of holes in the metal. As cells or small organisms cross over the holes, one hole after another, the objects block the passage of light from above onto the sensor below. This produces a series of images, consisting of light and shadow, akin to the output of a pinhole camera.
Because the holes are slightly skewed, so that they create a diagonal line with respect to the direction of flow, the images overlap slightly. All of the images are then pieced together to create a surprisingly precise 2-D picture of the object.
Yang is now in discussion with biotech companies to mass-produce the chip. The platform into which the chip is integrated can vary depending upon the needs of the user. For example, health workers in rural areas could carry cheap, compact models to test individuals for malaria, and disposable versions could be carried into the battlefield. "We could build hundreds or thousands of optofluidic microscopes onto a single chip, which would allow many organisms to be imaged and analyzed at once," says Xiquan Cui, the lead graduate student on the project.
In the future, the microscope chips could be incorporated into devices that are implanted into the human body. "An implantable microscope analysis system can autonomously screen for and isolate rogue cancer cells in blood circulation, thus, providing important diagnostic information and helping arrest the spread of cancer," says Yang.

ecofriend.org — This green machine creates all the power it needs from solar cells that have been embedded in the grass like lawn that sits on top of the PC. The green grass is actually made from natural cotton fabric which carries inkjet printed solar cells. Hundreds of these blades generate all the power the system needs at the rate of about 60 watts per hour.

THE WEAPON: Goliathon 83 Infinity Beam Projector
THE PITCH: Has your brass automaton butler achieved sentience and embarked upon a murderous rampage? The 10-pound Goliathon will dispatch him. At lower settings, it can fricassee a dodo.
THE GEAR: Archaic marketing hyperbole aside, the tubes, valves, and radiator fins — "aged" with a secret rust-texturing process — are pure Jules Verne. "I love the imagery from that era," Weta artist Greg Broadmore says, "the beautiful forms jammed together with all their extraneous mechanical details."

HUZZAH! Dr. Grordbort's Infallible Aether Oscillators, once the cutting edge of ray-pistol technology, were thought to be lost for all time. But 1,500 of the vintage firearms were recently discovered in an attic in New Zealand, and they will be offered for sale to the general public for the eminently reasonable price of $690 each. Plus, today only, the solicitors will include a pressed-tin case with genuine moon-velvet lining.
OK, these aren't authentic aether oscillators — there's no such thing. Sold by kiwi special-effects house Weta, they're expensive toys for geeks, crafted by the same people who designed props and miniatures for King Kong and the Lord of the Rings films. But there's no movie tie-in here. This line of toy laser guns started out as drawings by artist Greg Broadmore; they then were crafted by modelmaker David Tremont and cast in metal.
Wired presents a gallery of artwork that inspired Weta's collectible rayguns, plus exclusive photos of the retrofurist sidearms (including hi-res pics that show off the stunning craftsmanship). $690 may sound like a lot of money for a toy pistol, but Ming the Merciless himself would quail at the sight of these beauties.

To: IAHF LIST Subject: Robert Lederers "Apology" to the CIA Controlled Media From: "International Advocates for Health Freedom" jham@iahf.com Date: Sat, 16 Sep 2000 20:45:56 -0400 IAHF LIST: Robert Lederer has been exposing the genocidal spraying in NYC to control the West Nile Virus, (which CIA created) and he comes to some interesting conclusions about the degree of CIA involvement in our media here that are well researched and very much worth being aware of.
Robert Ledererman's Apology to the Media http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/8425/CIAPRESS.HTM#top
Boy, do I feel stupid. I've been blaming hard-working reporters for biased coverage of the West Nile Virus issue, their silence on the Manhattan Institute's Nazi-CIA-Eugenics link and for refusing to report on the Bush family's close connection to Hitler. In my naivete I was implying that the CIA was somehow influencing their coverage. How ignorant can one person get? Now I know better. After following a series of leads starting from an obscure article found on the internet the whole issue is much clearer and I can announce my findings. The media is not influenced by the CIA-the media is the CIA. Not that I can claim any credit for this insight. There are hundreds of carefully researched articles and even entire books about this subject-not to mention a Congressional report specifically about it.
What began the process of pulling the blinders from my eyes was one sentence in a press release announcing Ronald Reagan's nomination of William Casey-the founder of the Manhattan Institute-to be his Director of the CIA.
The release mentioned that among Mr. Casey's many accomplishments was that he ran the Reagan campaign, conducted secret intelligence operations during WWII [with Nazi ally and board member of I.G. Farben, Allen Dulles] was the chair of Operation Rescue [a CIA front which helped thousands of former Nazis emigrate to the U.S.], and manipulated the stock market as chair of the Securities and Exchange Commission. It went on to note that Casey was also the lead counsel [and as I later found out-top stockholder] in Capital Cities, the communications company that owned ABC until it was bought by Disney in 1996. He held that textbook example of a conflict of interest position while serving as CIA director.
Following that lead I found that many of Capital Cities founders were also formerly involved in intelligence, many of them having worked with Casey under Allen Dulles-the first CIA director.
In other words, ABC was owned by the CIA during the Gulf War and throughout the Reagan, Bush and much of the Clinton administrations. It was bought in 1996 by Disney, a company with many allegations of its own to having a CIA-mind control connection, whose creator had long been considered an FBI informer. Perhaps that explains why Manhattan Institute poster boy for a police state Rudy Giuliani's staged radio show is on WABC. http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/8425/CIAPRESS.HTM#top

www.ifg.org/bgsummary.html #1 Project Censored story for Year 2000
http://www.thenation.com/docPrint.mhtml?i=20020902&s=barlow Who owns water?
www.cia.gov/cia/publications/globaltrends2015/index.html CIA's "2015" report predicts water shortages, increasing inequities and public health emergencies
Billions of people may suffer severe water shortages as glaciers melt: WWFMILAN (AFP) Nov 27, 2003 Billions of people will face severe water shortages as glaciers around the world melt unless governments take urgent action to tackle global warming, the environmental group WWF said Thursday, ahead of a UN conference on climate change.
"Increasing global temperatures in the coming century will cause continued widespread melting of glaciers, which contain 70 percent of the world's fresh water reserves," it warned in a new study. "An overall rise of temperature of four degrees Celsius before the end of the century would eliminate almost all of them," it said.
Average temperatures have risen between 0.6 and 0.7 degrees Celsius since 1860, according to WWF, which urged countries to curb emissions of carbon dioxide to ensure the increase stays well below a threshold of two degrees.
The Switzerland-based conservation group released its study on climate change and global glacier decline in Milan where more than 180 countries are due to gather from December 1-12 for the UN Climate Change Convention to assess progress in addressing problems concerning global warming. "The melting of glaciers will lead to water shortages for billions of people, as well as sea levels rising and destroying coastal communities worldwide," WWF said.
Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia, where major cities rely on glaciers as their main source of water during dry seasons, would be worst affected, it predicted.
In the Himalayas, there was a grave danger of flooding, the group said, noting that glacier-fed rivers in the region supply water to one third of the world's population.
"Glacial meltdown is a clear sign that we must act now to fight global warming and stop the melting," said Jennifer Morgan, director of WWF's climate change programme.
The environmental organisation called on the ministers who will attend the Milan conference to act faster to combat global warming, urging those from developing nations in particular to demonstrate their will to tackle the issue.
WWF wants strong rules governing the use of forests, which play a vital role in absorbing carbon dioxide.
The group also asked governments to ensure Russia ratifies the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, which establishes a set of goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Already ratified by 119 countries, the text just needs a commitment from Moscow to become international law, it said.
On Tuesday, Italian officials said the European Union has pledged 390 million dollars (325 million euros) a year to help developing countries from 2005 fight the damaging effects of climate change.
In 2001, 20 countries including the 15 EU members pledged to provide 410 million dollars annually to poorer countries until 2005. All rights reserved. © 2003 Agence France-Presse.

All's Well That Ends Wells:Parching the Palestinians by ANTHONY GANCARSKI March 14, 2003 <http://sfgate.com/chronicle/> San Francisco Chronicle Water is a Matter of Public Debate by Dennis Kucinich
Every human being has the right to clean water. In the United States, water has long been considered a vital resource and thus managed in the public interest by local governments accountable to their constituents.
The mission of a public water system is simple: Deliver safe, clean and affordable water to you and your family. Public works projects funded and built our existing water infrastructure, which has served us well during the last century. But our water infrastructure is beginning to show signs of age. Pollution, decaying pipes, depleted aquifers and other problems pose real threats to the U.S. water supply and communities across the nation are looking for ways to bring water systems up to safe and modern standards.
Privatizing water systems, however, is not the answer. Private companies, seeking to extract profits from municipal water systems, dangle lofty promises in order to gain control of local water systems.
Corporations want people to believe that only they can efficiently manage water systems.
They seek monopoly contracts to run water systems for generations, or to expand the outright corporate ownership of water supplies and infrastructure.
Yet, from Atlanta to the United Kingdom to Huber Heights, Ohio, private water providers have charged higher rates, deteriorated water quality and failed to make assured investments. In fact, privatization failed so miserably in Atlanta that the city ousted United Water, only four years into a 20-year contract.
Four years of broken promises and managerial debacles was more than enough. Residents in many California communities are increasingly concerned with local water systems falling into the hands of a distant corporation. In Stockton, where city officials recently voted to privatize the public water system, citizens are responding by going door-to-door to collect signatures in an effort to nullify the City Council's decision.
I strongly believe that public control and public administration of the public's water supply is the only way to guarantee the universal human right of access to clean water. A grassroots movement of people is working to protect water from privatization by offering many alternative solutions to solve the global water crisis. Direct citizen participation should be encouraged when basic services such as water are being discussed. I hope that at the World Water Forum, which begins Sunday in Kyoto, Japan, this international movement of people will be heard.
Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, is the ranking member of the House National Security, Veterans Affairs and International Relations Subcommittee. For information on the World Water Forum, see ======================================================

| Documents say detainee near insanity |
...not allowed any contact with his family for five years. He remains in the military brig but is appealing his detention to the Supreme Court.
AP Exclusive: Documents say detainee near insanity
By PAMELA HESS, Associated Press Writer 59 minutes ago
A U.S. military officer warned Pentagon officials that an American detainee was being driven nearly insane by months of punishing isolation and sensory deprivation in a U.S. military brig, according to documents obtained by The Associated Press.
While the treatment of prisoners at detention facilities at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and in Afghanistan and Iraq have long been the subject of human rights complaints and court scrutiny, the documents shed new light on how two American citizens and a legal U.S. resident were treated in military jails inside the United States.
The Bush administration ordered the men to be held in military jails as "enemy combatants" for years of interrogations without criminal charges, which would not have been allowed in civilian jails.
The men were interrogated by the CIA and Defense Intelligence Agency, repeatedly denied access to attorneys and mail from home and contact with anyone other than guards and their interrogators. They were deprived of natural light for months and for years were forbidden even minor distractions such as a soccer ball or a dictionary.
"I will continue to do what I can to help this individual maintain his sanity, but in my opinion we're working with borrowed time," an unidentified Navy brig official wrote of prisoner Yaser Esam Hamdi in 2002. "I would like to have some form of an incentive program in place to reward him for his continued good behavior, but more so, to keep him from whacking out on me."
Yale Law School's Lowenstein International Human Rights Clinic received the documents through a Freedom of Information Act request filed by two attorneys Jonathan Freiman and Tahlia Townsend, representing another detainee, Jose Padilla. The Lowenstein group and the American Civil Liberties Union said the papers were evidence that the Bush administration violated the 5th Amendment's protections against cruel treatment. The U.S. military was ordered to treat the American prisoners the same way prisoners at Guantanamo were treated, according to the documents.
However, the Guantanamo jail was created by the Bush administration specifically to avoid allowing detainees any constitutional rights. Administration lawyers contended the Constitution did not apply outside the country.
"These documents are the first clear confirmation of what we've suspected all along, that the brig was run as a prison beyond the law. There was an effort to create a Gitmo inside the United States," Jonathan Hafetz of the ACLU's National Security Project in New York said, using the slang word for the U.S. naval facility in Cuba.
The 91 pages of e-mails and documents produced by U.S. Fleet Forces Command, which runs the military brigs in Norfolk, Va., and Charleston, S.C., detail daily decisions made about the treatment of Hamdi and Padilla, then both American citizens, and Ali Saleh Kahlah al-Marri, a legal resident. All were designated as by the White House as "illegal enemy combatants."
The paperwork show uniformed officials at the military brigs growing increasingly uncomfortable and then alarmed that they were being directed to handle their prisoners under the rules that governed Guantanamo.
The authors and recipients of the e-mails are censored from the documents. They appear to be going to either military or Pentagon legal counsel and policy offices.
The documents show that some officials at the Charleston brig were deeply skeptical about the mandate that Guantanamo rules should apply in the United States, a decision made by the defense secretary's office, according to the documents.
"You have every right to question the 'lash-up' between GTMO and Charleston — it was the first thing I ask (sic) about a year ago when I checked on board," wrote one official to another in 2006. "In a nutshell, they gave the Charleston detainee mission to (Joint Forces Command) who promptly gave it to (Fleet Forces Command) with a 'lots of luck' and nothing else."
An officer was still raising alarms about Hamdi's mental state after 14 months of jail with no contact with lawyers, his family or even other prisoners.
"I told him the last thing that I wanted to have happen was to send him anywhere from here as a 'basket case,' of use to no one, to include himself," the officer wrote in an e-mail to undisclosed government officials in June 2003. "I fear the rubber band is nearing its breaking point here and not totally confident I can keep his head in the game much longer."
The frustrated officer wrote that he had "to have the ability to exercise some discretion when I believe it best for the health and welfare of those assigned to my facility ... Know ... we are to remain consistent with the procedures that were/are in place at Camp X-Ray" a reference to the Guantanamo jail. He pointed out that imposing those conditions in the brig had a far harsher effect on his prisoners because they had no contact with any other detainees, which was allowed at Guantanamo.
Scores of pages of once-secret legal opinions regarding detainee rights and treatment have been released under the Freedom of Information Act. At least two apparently crucial memos about enemy combatant treatment inside the U.S. have yet to be made public.
Hamdi was captured in Afghanistan in 2001, shipped to Guantanamo and then moved to the U.S. after his citizenship was discovered. He was held and interrogated for three years without charges. The Supreme Court in 2004 rejected the government's attempt to hold him indefinitely without charge. He was released to Saudi Arabia on the condition he give up his U.S. citizenship.
Al-Marri, a citizen of Qatar, was a legal resident studying for a master's degree in Illinois when he was arrested in December 2001 by the FBI as a material witness to the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. He was charged with credit card fraud in 2002. A month before his trial in 2003, President Bush declared him an enemy combatant and al-Marri was transferred to the consolidated naval brig in Charleston. There he was held in isolation for 16 months, denied shoes and socks for two years, and was not allowed any contact with his family for five years. He remains in the military brig but is appealing his detention to the Supreme Court.
Padilla was arrested in 2002 under suspicion he was collaborating with al-Qaida to build a radioactive or "dirty" bomb.
He was held as an enemy combatant for more than three years. He was held totally incommunicado for 21 months. His mother was only allowed to see Padilla after she agreed not to alert the media to the visit, according to the documents.
The government dropped the dirty bomb charges and Padilla's case was moved to civilian court where in 2007 he was convicted of supporting terrorism in Kosovo, Bosnia and Chechnya.

McCain Gets a 'D' from Vets Group
October 07, 2008
www.Military.com by Bryant Jordan
Sen. John McCain may be the combat veteran and son and grandson of admirals, but he rates only a D when it comes to supporting veterans issues, according to the "Congressional Report Card" just issued by the IAVA, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America.
Sen. Barack Obama is no veteran, but his votes in the U.S, Senate over the past year earned him a B, says IAVA executive director Paul Rieckhoff .
See congressional report card from the IAVA.
http://www.veteranreportcard.org/
The report card rates every member of the Senate and House, he said, and with it "people can find out who in Washington really supports Iraq and Afghanistan veterans and who's full of hot air."
IAVA is not endorsing either presidential candidate, Rieckhoff said, but in a conference call interview with media it was the voting records of McCain and Obama that got all the focus.
At the same time, a great many veterans and active duty personnel have shown they back McCain because of his consistent support of the surge in Iraq when others, including Obama, predicted the effort would not work. McCain also draws in service member and veteran support because of his own military experience as a Navy attack pilot and prisoner of war in Vietnam.
A Military.com online poll conducted earlier this month found 68 percent of readers favored McCain over Obama.
Critical to their report card grades, said Rieckhoff , was how and when they came out on the new GI Bill and how often they missed senate votes important to veterans. Each vote in favor of a veterans bill chalked up a point, while those who co-sponsored the new GI Bill got two points.

No points were awarded for votes in opposition or missed votes, said IAVA policy director Vanessa Williamson.
McCain never supported the new GI Bill, and in fact hampered its passage by pushing for another bill that veterans groups considered inferior. Obama was an early advocate and co-sponsor of the bill.
Obama also fared better in the number of pro-veteran bills he voted for. Of nine pieces of legislation listed by IAVA, Obama voted for five, while McCain voted for three.
Neither voted in opposition to the nine bills, but instead failed to vote because they were campaigning.
"There was a lot of discussion in the office on whether people should get an incomplete if they can't vote," Williamson said, "but we felt it was really important (to factor that in). The troops fight every day in Iraq and Afghanistan. I don't get to show up at my job 30 percent of the time "
Rieckhoff noted that Sen. Tim Johnson, D- S. Dakota, who suffered a stroke and was hospitalized in a coma for a time, missed fewer votes than McCain, and Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., missed fewer than both candidates notwithstanding he underwent brain surgery for a tumor.
"You cannot support the troops if you're not there to vote," Reikoff said.
McCain was one of only four senators to make the D list. The others are Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, Michael Enzi of Wyoming and Jim DeMint of South Carolina.
