Gems Sty http://gemssty.com/2007/03/ Giant Drawing for Shiseido Posted March 31, 2007 Comments(1) I’m not sure if this is a production advertisement or perhaps a viral marketing video - whatever it is, it is really cool! While I’ve seen Chinese peasants practicing calligraphy with a mop and water, the scale of this is definitely much larger. Watch as the guy paints a picture many times his size - and when others join in the fun as well! I really wonder how he maintains a sense of proportion and perspective over such a large canvas though.

How the Eye Works It's a simple sphere, about 1" in diameter, yet its power is awesome. It discerns colors and shapes in bright or dim light from near or far. It helps you read books, and situations, and people. It is a vital link to the world around you. And it succeeds through a complex ballet of muscles and nerves.
The eye is the organ of sight, a nearly spherical hollow globe filled with fluids (humors). The outer layer or tunic (sclera, or white, and cornea) is fibrous and protective. The middle tunic layer (choroid, ciliary body and the iris) is vascular. The innermost layer (the retina) is nervous or sensory. The fluids in the eye are divided by the lens into the vitreous humor (behind the lens) and the aqueous humor (in front of the lens). The lens itself is flexible and suspended by ligaments which allow it to change shape to focus light on the retina, which is composed of sensory neurons.
http://www.eye-floaters.com/treatingfloaters-vitrectomy.php Pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) & Floater Only Vitrectomy Pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) is a procedure usually reserved for complicated posterior segment disease. It has a well-known risk profile and justifiably there is reluctance to offer this surgery to treat floaters. However the post-operative complication rate following PPV has been assessed in the setting of retinal detachment surgery or in the presence of complicated vitreo-retinal disease.
It may be argued that pars plana vitrectomy for floaters, in eyes that have an established posterior vitreous detachment (PVD), may be associated with a lower incidence of both intraoperative and post-operative complications. The three main postoperative complications that one must worry about in vitrectomy are: development or progression of nuclear sclerosis cataract, retinal detachment and choroidal or vitreous hemorrhage (bleeding) in the eye.
Treating Eye Floaters http://www.eye-floaters.com/treatingfloaters.php The standard vision tests performed by opticians, which quantify your vision as 20/20 etc., are unable to truly quantify many aspects of the visual disability incurred by floaters and how these floaters in the eye can interfere with general day-to-day tasks and overall quality of life. For some, visual tasks such as reading, driving or general observations may become stressful or laborious.
It is always advised to wait at least a year to determine if the floaters may decrease or become less prominent naturally. If they do not, then one can consider laser surgery or vitrectomy. However, we must caution that surgical or laser treatment of floaters is not considered a standard management strategy for reducing floaters and is only recommended by a handful of physicians, even then, under exceptional circumstances. For more conventional advice on learning to live with floaters please do read our open article entitled living with floaters. http://www.eye-floaters.com/treatingfloaters.php

Eye in the sky posted by Chet at 11:36 AM UTC
"Knowledge has killed the sun, making it a ball of gas with spots," wrote D. H. Lawrence in one of his crankier moments. "The world of reason and science...this is the dry and sterile world the abstract mind inhabits."
Well, David, whatever you say. But before you fold on science, take a look at the pics from the TRACE satellite telescope.
What you'll see is not a god, not Helios's golden chariot, not the yellow circle with smiling face we see in a child's drawing. Here in the TRACE photographs is the seething hearth of life, the roiling, boiling dynamo of creation. Not merely a ball of gas with spots, but a dancing, flickering furnace of unquenchable energy.
Loops of blazing gas -- plasma is the technical term -- soaring tens of thousands of miles out from the surface of the Sun. On the scale of these firestorms, the planet Earth shrinks to physical insignificance -- like a pea flicked into the flames of a roaring campfire.
The TRACE satellite orbits the Earth a few hundred miles above the surface, north to south, staying pretty much above the dawn-dusk line between day and night, with its eye fixed permanently on the Sun. The telescope is about as tall as a man, with mirrors the size of dinner plates. Forty million bucks worth of human ingenuity. An extension of human scientific curiosity, it catches knowledge by the bucketful.
"The power of the visible is the invisible," wrote the poet Marianne Moore. The TRACE satellite makes the invisible visible, reveals the Sun's power to the mind's eye, lets us feel the fire.
Dancing loops of roiling gas, hurled outward by powerful magnetic fields. Millions of tons of the sun's substance hurled into space like a wet dog shaking off sheets of water, sweeping the Earth with the energy that lights the green fuse of life.
A gassy ball with spots, indeed! Knowledge may threaten our human-centered sense of self-importance. Knowledge may shatter our consoling myths. But take my word for it, David: Knowledge is better than ignorance. http://www.sciencemusings.com/blog/blogarchive/2007_03_01_blogarchive.html

http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn11410-mathematicians-finally-map-248dimension-structure.html Mathematicians finally map 248-dimension structure 16:41 19 March 2007 NewScientist.com news service Hazel Muir Enlarge image The E8 root system consists of 240 vectors in an eight-dimensional space. These vectors are the corners of an eight-dimensional object called the Gosset polytope 4 21 represented here in two dimensions (Image: John Stembridge, based on a drawing by Peter McMullen)A fiendishly complicated mathematical challenge has finally been conquered by mathematicians.
The team has exhaustively explored an esoteric 248-dimension structure called E8 and the results take up 60 gigabytes of data. If written out in tiny print, the results would cover an area the size of Manhattan.
“E8 was discovered over a century ago, in 1887, and until now, no one thought the structure could ever be understood,” says the team leader Jeffrey Adams from the University of Maryland in College Park, US.
E8 (pronounced E-eight) is an example of a so-called Lie group. A Norwegian mathematician invented Lie groups in the 19th century to study symmetry. A Lie group underlies objects like balls, cylinders or cones that are symmetrical when rotated by small amounts.
Tough unpacking Mathematicians take these descriptions to wild extremes by imagining the 3D objects in myriad dimensions. The group E8 encapsulates the symmetries of a geometric object like a sphere, cylinder or cone, but in 57 dimensions. E8 itself has 248 dimensions.
The tough job for mathematicians was to explore this structure, effectively unpacking all the information about E8 – the catalogue of objects it can act on and how it acts.
“It’s a mathematical entity that we know exists, but we had to explore its inner structure,” says Hermann Nicolai, a mathematical physicist at the Albert Einstein Institute in Potsdam, Germany, who was not involved in the work. “It’s a bit like making a plan of a complicated building, or exploring an ancient pyramid to see how it was built.”
Unified theory Adams and 17 other researchers solved the problem in a four-year project using a supercomputer at the University of Washington in Seattle. Their resulting map of E8 contains 60 gigabytes of information (see more on their website).
“This is an impressive achievement,” said Nicolai. He adds that the unique structure of E8 might help in the quest for a unified theory of gravity and the other forces in nature. This is because the underlying symmetries of the unified theory, if it really exists, will have to be complicated and unique.
“It will require an extremely special structure, mathematically speaking,” says Nicolai, “and E8 is an example of a symmetry that might fit the bill.”

Port Wine Stain Birthmark Do you or someone you love have a Port Wine Stain Birthmark?
http://www.geoffspws.com/livingwithPWS.htm http://www.geoffspws.com/healed.JPG
Do you have a port wine stain, or are you a parent of a child with a port wine stain? If so, you may have sought treatment and been told by a doctor that there is nothing that can be done. If that is the case, then you will want to hear what I have to say.
Corrective Surgery Is Available Let me start off by saying I am coming from the perspective of knowing what it is like to live with a Port Wine Stain. Since Port Wine Stains appear at birth, treating people in the early stages of life is what people say is best. If you would like to see what that looks like through this family's example click here. If you would like to investigate places for being treated yourself or treating your child that is what the list below is for. Keep in mind though the links I have below are people who though they treat PWS I don't know how knowledgable they are in their craft. The only doctor I would recommend, even though going through these surgerys have been extremely difficult for me is on one of my links. That person would be would be Dr. Waner of Beth Israel Laser ans Skin Surgery Center. He appears to be really knowledgeable about his craft. My experience with him has been far better than with my last doctor. http://www.geoffspws.com/livingwithPWS.htm

http://lawprofessors.typepad.com/environmental_law/governancemanagement/index.html "Sustainable, renewable energy maintains our standard of living and provides energy independence The US is far behind in the energy independence sweepstakes race. Steve Mufson of the Washington Post reports that the oil-exporting countries are winning this race by $ 700 billion annually. And the US is not, and never again will be, an oil-exporting country.
Between rising oil prices and global warming impacts, continued reliance on oil virtually guarantees that our standard of living will fall and fall dramatically in the coming years. It also guarantees that some of the most vicious regimes will have plenty of money to buy, creat, proliferate, and use true weapons of mass destruction (i.e. tactical and strategic nuclear weapons).
It is so ironic that Republicans, traditionally the national security hawks, have been so passive in moving the United States towards sustainable, renewable energy. Maybe someone can connect the dots for them.
Oil Price Rise Causes Global Shift in Wealth By Steven Mufson Washington Post Staff Writer Saturday, November 10, 2007; A01
High oil prices are fueling one of the biggest transfers of wealth in history. Oil consumers are paying $4 billion to $5 billion more for crude oil every day than they did just five years ago, pumping more than $2 trillion into the coffers of oil companies and oil-producing nations this year alone.
The consequences are evident in minds and mortar: anger at Chinese motor-fuel pumps and inflated confidence in the Kremlin; new weapons in Chad and new petrochemical plants in Saudi Arabia; no-driving campaigns in South Korea and bigger sales for Toyota hybrid cars; a fiscal burden in Senegal and a bonanza in Brazil. In Burma, recent demonstrations were triggered by a government decision to raise fuel prices.
In the United States, the rising bill for imported petroleum lowers already anemic consumer savings rates, adds to inflation, worsens the trade deficit, undermines the dollar and makes it more difficult for the Federal Reserve to balance its competing goals of fighting inflation and sustaining growth.
High prices have given a boost to oil-rich Alaska, which in September raised the annual oil dividend paid to every man, woman and child living there for a year to $1,654, an increase of $547 from last year. In other states, high prices create greater incentives for pursuing non-oil energy projects that once might have looked too expensive and hurt earnings at energy-intensive companies like airlines and chemical makers. Even Kellogg's cited higher energy costs as a drag on its third-quarter earnings.
With crude oil prices nearing $100 a barrel, there is no end in sight to the redistribution of more than 1 percent of the world's gross domestic product. Earlier oil shocks generated giant shifts in wealth and pools of petrodollars, but they eventually faded and economies adjusted. This new high point in petroleum prices has arrived over four years, and many believe it will represent a new plateau even if prices drop back somewhat in coming months.
"There's never been anything like this on a sustained basis the way we've seen the last couple of years," said Kenneth Rogoff, a Harvard University economics professor and former chief economist at the International Monetary Fund. Oil prices "are not spiking; they're just rising," he added.
The benefits, to the tune of $700 billion a year, are flowing to the world's oil-exporting countries" excerpted http://lawprofessors.typepad.com/environmental_law/governancemanagement/index.html
