The D.C. Madame Jeane Palfrey, whose clients include prominent
politicians (Senator Vitter, R-Louisiana), lobbyists,
and other power brokers (Randall L. Tobias, a senior official in
the State Department), was found hanged on Thursday.
In mid-April, Palfrey was convicted of money laundering, using
the mail for illegal purposes, and racketeering.
She remained free while awaiting sentencing on July 24.
Palfrey’s death was pronounced a suicide, and she was quoted as saying
she’d rather die than go to prison. One of her
former employees, Brandy Britton (her real name, are you serious?),
was arrested in January 2006, and committed
"suicide" before standing trial. Needless to say, the names of most
of their clients have probably died with these women.
This sure looks like the plot of a movie.

Here's how the eggheads tried to explain the oversize bubble bath:
As a wave starts to form on the surface, the motion of the water causes bubbles to swirl upwards. Massed together, all those
bubbles whip together to form foam, which then "surfs" toward shore until the wave crashes and tosses the foam into the air.
"It's the same effect you get when you whip up a milk shake in a blender," says a marine expert. "The more powerful the swirl,
the more foam you create on the surface and the lighter it becomes."
Storms off the New South Wales Coast and further north of Queensland created this massive ocean disturbance by coincidentally
hitting a stretch of water that was particularly rich in bubble-forming substances.

Man's Google Search Leads To Movie
The "Google Me" movie is the latest buzz on the web, and people can't help but want to find out more about
Jim Killeen, the man who started it all.
After he Googled his name one night he became fascinated by all of the other Jim Killeen's that popped up
during the search. One was a priest, one a financial advisor, he decided he had to meet them in person.
His curiosity led to the "Google Me" documentary movie, starring six of the Jim Killeen's he tracked down
as well as himself.

SOUTH PASADENA, CA. - The Chouinard School of Art is pleased to present Mix, a group
show curated by Ed Flynn and Laddie John Dill. Mix features work by nine Southern California
artists, all of whom are currently students at Chouinard under the tutelage of artist Ed Flynn.
With its inception in Flynn's dialogue class, Mix organically grew out of the teacher working
directly with every student, guiding and nurturing each one's vision, and culminating in what you
see before you. Much like the communities in which we live, Mix brings together various styles,

WASHINGTON, DC - The American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center presents
Fernando Botero: Abu Ghraib, on view through December 30.
Fernando Botero's Abu Ghraib series features uncompromising, graphic images by this
Colombian painter expressing his outrage at the American-led torture of Iraqi insurgents.
The Paris-based Botero, known for his exaggeratedly rotund figures in benign social
satires, unveiled these controversial works in Europe in 2005.
This will be the first showing of the Abu Ghraib paintings and drawings in a museum
in the U.S. The works in this exhibition are quite the departure from Botero's usual
style, but do relate to his previous works portraying drug cartel violence in Colombia.
Botero constructed each work after reading official reports of the atrocities and
concentrated on the suffering and dignity of the victims rather than their tormentors.
The show is presented in collaboration with the university's College of Arts & Sciences,
Schools of International Service, Public Affairs, Communications, Kogod School of
Business, and the Washington College of Law.

The thought that popped into my head when I first saw this incredible photo was,
"next time you're overcome with delusions of badassitude, remember this and say --
no you are not tough. This is tough."
Pieter Hugo's photo series "Hyena People of Nigeria" is the result of a ten-day trek
the South African photographer took with a group of wandering minstrels and their
animal companions: three hyenas, two pythons and four monkeys. Shown here: "Mallam
Mantari Lamal with Mainasara, Nigeria, 2005"
Here's a snip from a "making of" interview with Hugo:
‘Last year I saw a picture on a website that was taken from a car window in Nigeria,”
says Pieter Hugo. “It showed a man with a hyena on the streets of Lagos.”
Seated on a restaurant balcony overlooking Cape Town’s city bowl, the tall, athletic
photographer says it was this crude photograph that motivated him to visit Nigeria.
“The caption said he was a debt collector,” he continues, a glass of wine and salad
placed in front of him. “The photograph really intrigued me.”
Through a local researcher Hugo was introduced to Adetokunbo Abiola, a Nigerian
journalist who emailed him to say he knew of the men (there were more than one) in the
picture. A few weeks later Hugo nervously exited Lagos airport on his first visit to
the country."

BOSTON (AP) -- For decades, Boston University sociologist Peter Berger
says, American intellectuals have looked down on evangelicals.
Educated people have the notion that evangelicals are ''barefoot
people of Tobacco Road who, I don't know, sleep with their sisters or
something,'' Berger says.
It's time that attitude changed, he says.
''That was probably never correct, but it's totally false now and I
think the image should be corrected,'' Berger said in a recent
interview.
Now, his university's Institute on Culture, Religion and World Affairs
is leading a two-year project that explores an ''evangelical
intelligentsia'' which Berger says is growing and needs to be better
understood, given the large numbers of evangelicals and their
influence.
''It's not good if a prejudiced view of this community prevails in the
elite circles of society,'' said Berger, a self-described liberal
Lutheran. ''It's bad for democracy and it's wrong.''
The study is being directed by Berger and Timothy Shah, an evangelical
political scientist at the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life. Shah
is documenting the history of the evangelical movement, including its
historical hostility to higher learning, a revival of scholarship, and
the minds and ideas it has since produced.
Some aren't convinced evangelical scholars have made as much progress
as they think.
Boston College sociologist Alan Wolfe, who wrote an article in The
Atlantic, ''The Opening of the Evangelical Mind'' in 2000, said
despite the success of some evangelical scholars, many have retained
an insularity and defensiveness that limits their effectiveness.
''There isn't enough mixing in the larger world of ideas,''
he said.
An estimated 75 million Americans are evangelicals, people who
emphasize a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and commit to
spreading the message of salvation though his redemptive death.
Evangelicals say they often aren't well-understood beyond their
Bible-banging, evolution-hating caricature.
Many equate evangelicals with fundamentalists, an evangelical subset
that interprets the Bible literally -- as in the six calendar days of
creation -- and is home to ardent evolution opponents. But Shah said
most evangelical scientists believe in evolution guided by God.
A quote from a 1993 Washington Post article, describing followers of
two leading evangelists as ''largely poor, uneducated and easy to
command,'' remains infamous among evangelicals as an example of the
bias they claim to face. After President Bush won the 2004 election,
New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd wrote Bush had won the
evangelical vote, in part, by appealing to their ''fear of scientific
progress.''
Mark Noll, an evangelical and well-known historian at the University
of Notre Dame, said the stereotype is perpetuated because both
religious and secular thinkers have created an either-or choice
between science and God.
''It's just false,'' Noll said. ''You go back to (Isaac)
Newton and
(Johannes) Kepler, the founders of early modern science were theists
of one sort or another.''
Shah says a major split between evangelicals and popular culture came
after the so-called Scopes monkey trial in 1925, in which a teacher
was convicted of violating Tennessee's ban on teaching evolution -- a
decision later overturned. Defense attorney Clarence Darrow told his
opponent, William Jennings Bryan, that: ''You insult every man of
science and learning in the world because he does not believe in your
fool religion.''
Two years later, Sinclair Lewis's ''Elmer Gantry'' poked at
the
anti-intellectualism of leading evangelicals and cast them as corrupt
frauds. At the same time, Shah said, the country's institutions of
higher education were taken over by people hostile to Christian faith.
''(Evangelicals) felt totally besieged,'' Shah said. ''They
felt like
the culture made fun of them.''
Evangelicals began to emerge from ''their self-imposed ghetto''
in the
1950s and '60s after prodding from leaders such as Billy Graham, who
urged a new intellectual boldness, Shah said.
They also became more prosperous and better educated, and produced
more scholars as a result, Berger said.
Notre Dame is home to several of the best-known evangelical thinkers
besides Noll, including philosopher Alvin Plantinga, whose ''free will
defense'' takes on the logical problem of evil, and historian George
Marsden, who won the prestigious Bancroft Prize for his book on
colonial preacher Jonathan Edwards.
Other notables who identify themselves as evangelicals include federal
judge Michael McConnell, a top constitutional law scholar; Francis
Collins, director of the Human Genome Project, and Duke professor
Peter Feaver, a former top director at the National Security Council.
Shah is conducting detailed interviews with top scholars as part of
the ongoing research. In December, the project hosted a conference in
Boston where evangelicals discussed how their faith informs their work
and how to create more room for a religious perspective in various
academic disciplines. The research will eventually be published in a
book.

There is no way particulate matter can be put into the fuel, two problems
1 racor fuel filters would get clogged,
2 injectors would get clogged.
It would have to be put in post combustion, thus, requiring a refit of all
aircraft involved, which would have involved too many people, and something
would have came out.
Something else not considered is the fact that the new engines run
differently with allot of bypass, thus, the exhaust temps are allot cooler,
and allot of people say that it caused he water which is part of the
combustion process to form ice and stay that way.
Also there is more traffic, and of these new engines, now, unlike in the
past which were low bypass or even straight jet engines.
The new engines are way more efficient and the reduction in the exhaust temp
is like a factor of 10
Now do other chemicals in the fuel released in the upper atmosphere have an
effect, maybe but nothing compared to that volcano that just went off, and
all of the cars, exhaust and the power plants, etc. Or for that matter
farming and the use of pesticides. Will put more harmful chemicals in the
atmosphere.
He talks about common sense then talk about the amount of tons of stuff, and
the fact is that it is a pin prick compared to the other types of pollution.
