updated 12:35 p.m. EDT, Wed May 13, 2009
David MacKay says people engage in wishful thinking about energy because they don't look at the math. (CNN) -- We need to introduce simple arithmetic into our discussions of energy.
We need to understand how much energy our chosen lifestyles consume, we need to decide where we want that energy to come from, and we need to get on with building energy systems of sufficient size to match our desired consumption.
Our failure to talk straight about the numbers is allowing people to persist in wishful thinking, inspired by inane sayings such as "every little bit helps."
Assuming we are serious about getting off fossil fuels, the scale of building required should not be underestimated. Small actions alone will not deliver a solution.
Let's express energy consumption and energy production using simple personal units, namely kilowatt-hours. One kilowatt-hour (kWh) is the energy used by leaving a 40-watt bulb on for 24 hours. The chemical energy in the food we eat to stay alive amounts to about 3 kWh per day. Taking one hot bath uses about 5 kWh of heat. Driving an average European car 100 kilometers (roughly 62 miles) uses 80 kWh of fuel. With a few of these numbers in mind, we can start to evaluate some of the recommendations that people make about energy.
Take, for example, the idea that one of the top 10 things you should do to make a difference to your energy consumption is to unplug your cell-phone charger when you are not using it. The truth is that leaving a phone charger plugged in uses about 0.01 kWh per day, 1/100th of the power consumed by a lightbulb.
This means that switching the phone charger off for a whole day saves the same energy as is used in driving an average car for one second. Switching off phone chargers is like bailing the Titanic with a teaspoon. I'm not saying you shouldn't unplug it, but please realize, when you do so, what a tiny fraction it is of your total energy footprint.
In total, the European lifestyle uses 125 kWh per day per person for transport, heating, manufacturing, and electricity. That's equivalent to every person having 125 light bulbs switched on all the time. The average American uses 250 kWh per day: 250 light bulbs.
And most of this energy today comes from fossil fuels. What are our post-fossil-fuel options?
Among the energy-saving options, two promising technology switches are the electrification of transportation (electric vehicles can be about four times as energy-efficient as standard fossil-fuel vehicles) and the use of electric-powered heat pumps to deliver winter heating and hot water (heat pumps can be four times as energy-efficient as standard heaters).
Among all the energy-supply technologies, the three with the biggest potential today are solar power, wind power and nuclear power.
As a thought-experiment, let's imagine that technology switches and lifestyle changes manage to halve American energy consumption to 125 kWh per day per person. How big would the solar, wind and nuclear facilities need to be to supply this halved consumption? For simplicity, let's imagine getting one-third of the energy supply from each.
To supply 42 kWh per day per person from solar power requires roughly 80 square meters per person of solar panels.
To deliver 42 kWh per day per person from wind for everyone in the United States would require wind farms with a total area roughly equal to the area of California, a 200-fold increase in United States wind power.
To get 42 kWh per day per person from nuclear power would require 525 one-gigawatt nuclear power stations, a roughly five-fold increase over today's levels.
I hope these numbers convey the scale of action required to put in place a sustainable energy solution. What about tidal power? What about wave power? What about geothermal energy, biofuels or hydroelectricity? In a short article, I can't discuss all the technology options.
But the sober message about wind and solar applies to all renewables: All renewables, much as I love them, deliver only a small power per unit area, so if we want renewable facilities to supply power on a scale at all comparable to our consumption, those facilities must be big.
If you don't want to build 1 million wind turbines, you can drill 1 million geothermal boreholes instead.
Before I close, I would like to say a few words about the idea that "the hydrogen economy" can magically solve our energy problems. The truth is that, in energy terms, today's hydrogen-powered vehicles don't help at all. Most prototype hydrogen-powered vehicles use more energy than the fossil-fuel vehicles they replace. The BMW Hydrogen 7, for example, uses 254 kWh per 100 km, but the average fossil car in Europe uses 80 kWh per 100 km.
In contrast, electric vehicles use far less energy: as little as 20 kWh per 100 km, or even 6 kWh per 100 km. The problem with hydrogen is that both the creation and the use of hydrogen are energy-inefficient steps. Adopting hydrogen as a transport fuel would increase our energy demand. And, as I hope the numbers above have shown, supplying energy to match our demand is not going to be easy.
The public discussion of energy options tends to be emotional, polarized, mistrustful and destructive. I hope that focusing attention on the numbers may make it possible to develop honest and constructive conversations about energy.
It's not going to be easy to make a energy plan that adds up, but it is possible. We need to get building.
The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of David MacKay. http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/science/05/13/mackay.energy/index.html

Again does not matter now that we have real cold fusion. You can use the energy to create all the power that you need from sea water, but also all the fresh water that you need.
The fact that you are in a desert it has extremely low amounts of water in the air. I have seen experiments done with liquid nitrogen to show this So if a bell jar of Liquid Nitrogen does not have much condensation on it, and there are no clouds, it is not called a desert for nothing. So if you want to help people in a desert get them a Uhaul or bus ticket and move them from there.
Fact is since the ocean has the fuel, and water and plant food etc, cold fusion will allow all island Nations to make as much water as they need.
Now will it see the light of day? Note that the media is not talking about. Even though it was done and confirmed at the Naval Labs, where My son worked on it. Do not waste your time, energy, money on anything solar, wind etc, fusion is everything. I know that I sent you that data from those experiments. There have even been some GreenPeace nutts now saying it is terrible cause it will use up and lower sea levels.
They are right, if all humans right now use cold Fusion from sea water they will lower the sea levels by about 1 inch, in about 1000 years, I mean what are we thinking. These people are crazy. This is clean, pure power. Power that can be created anywhere there is water. Moon has water Mars, has water, water will be the holy grail of everything.
Solar is ok for something's but the energy that it costs to make them, and the fact that they only work in the sun, and storage of the power is lost both ways, not a good way to go at all. The more that you scale those systems up the more the problems of those system eat into the total amount of energy that you getting from those systems.
Wind is more practical, but again, storage is a problem, and most of the turbine designs again are very inefficient and again, you are talking about mechanical systems.
Fact is again why when you have a Fusion Fuel cell with 100 gallons of water that can power a house for 10 homes for 1 year, which will give them all of the power some 200kw a day per house. 24/7 and the box is the size of a home furnace.
The power can be used to charge up the electric car, to run the electric stove, air water condensers or Osmosis systems that can take brackish ground water and make it clean and fresh. Problem, governments of the world do not want this out. They have no way to tax the power. Opec does not want this out.
Take Care, B

Jose Delgado, funded by Yale University, the Office of Naval Intelligence, the U.S. Air Force 6571st Aeromedical Research Laboratory, and other institutions, and linked to Spanish fascist groups by researcher John Judge,31…is the man who perfected the stimoceiver [or ‘transdermal stimulator’], a tiny electronic device that is implanted into the brains of humans and animals, and is used to transmit electrical impulses directly to the brain [Delgado, Jose, Physical Control of the Mind (New York: Harper & Row, 1969); and Judge, John, “The Secret Government,” Dharma Combat number 10].32
Delgado, in a series of experiments terrifying in their human potential, implanted electrodes in the skull of a bull. Waving a red cape, Delgado provoked the animal to charge. Then, with a signal emitted from a tiny hand-held radio transmitter, he made the beast turn aside in mid-lunge and trot docilely away.33 He has [also] been able to “play” monkeys and cats like “little electronic toys” that yawn, hide, fight, play, mate and go to sleepviii on command.34 The individual is defenseless against direct manipulation of the brain [Delgado, Physical Control].35
The open publication of Delgado’s book Physical Control of the Mind met with a decidedly cool reaction from the public, and this may have warned other researchers in the field to keep quiet about the subject. To this day, Delgado’s is the only popular book on the subject of implants and electrical stimulation of the brain.36
During the latter days of MKULTRA research, a CIA memorandum, dated 22 November, 1961, announced, “Initial biological work on techniques and brain locations essential to providing conditioning and control of animals has been completed. The feasibility of remote control of activities in several species of animals has been demonstrated.… The ultimate objective of this research is to provide an understanding of the mechanisms involved in the directional control of animals and to provide practical systems suitable for human application.” 37
Later breakthroughs in technology were documented in “Two-Way Transdermal Communication with the Brain,” published in 1975. By this time Delgado had linked his brain implants with computers. The monograph records,
“The most interesting aspect of the transdermal stimoceivers is the ability to perform simultaneous recording and stimulation of brain functions, thereby permitting the establishment of feedbacks and ‘on-demand’ programs of excitation with the aid of the computer. With the increasing sophistication and miniaturization of electronics, it may be possible to compress the necessary circuitry for a small computer into a chip that is implantable subcutaneously. In this way, a new self-contained instrument could be devised, capable of receiving, analyzing, and sending back information to the brain, establishing artificial links between unrelated cerebral areas, functional feedbacks, and programs of stimulation contingent on the appearance of pre-determined patterns” [Delgado, Lipponen, Weiss, del Pozo, Monteagudo, and McMahon, “Two-Way Transdermal Communication with the Brain,” a co-operative publication of the Medical University of Madrid, Spain, and Yale University Medical School, 1975].38
Many popular articles on Delgado intend us to think that his primary purpose was the rehabilitation of the mentally and physically sick. This does not happen to be the case. Delgado was a blatant control freak. An example is Delgado’s experimentation on changing the social orientation of animals. One staging area for this experimentation was an island in the Bermudas, where Delgado maintained a free-roving population of gibbons with electronic implants, using electrical brain boosts to build and destroy social orders among those primates as if he was knocking down a row of dominoes [Packard, People Shapers].39
Although well cited, Delgado’s practical results on humans were extremely limited,ix as most of his research was either merely stated without a results base, or has been reported on second hand.… Reports have been made on his work on the ‘Pandora Project’, which involved modulating electromagnetic fields to a soldier’s head so that the soldier would lose self-control on the battle field. Reports also include how work was carried out to induce schizophrenia artificially through electrical stimulation of the septal zone in the human brain.40
Always a visionary in the Orwellian mold, Delgado said, “Looking into the future, it may be predicted that telerecording and telestimulation of the brain will be widely used” [Delgado, Jose, “Radio Stimulation of the Brain in Primates and Man,” New Haven, Connecticut: Department of Psychiatry, Yale University School of Medicine, 1969].41 He has urged the U.S. government to make “control of the mind” a national goal.42

Fujitsu Introduces World's Smallest, Lightest CMOS Micro-Camera Module for Mobile Phones
Allows greater flexibility of design for mobile phones, expanding range of use to include video images
|
Tokyo, October 4, 2001--- Targeting the next generation of mobile phones for the broadband Internet era, Fujitsu Limited today introduced the world's smallest (7.80 mm x 6.98 mm x 4.98 mm; 0.27 cc, 0.3 gram) CIF*1-compatible CMOS color image sensor module (110,000 pixels) with built-in lens.
The advent of new broadband mobile communications services including video images is creating demand for ultra-compact mobile camera attachments that can capture moving images. As a result, demand for CMOS image sensors, which are much smaller than CCD*2 cameras and consume far less power, is expected to grow.

Huge Resolution Camera

Super-megapixel resolution pictures are something that arouse awe in most people and one of the reasons for this is because they’re not easily obtained. The prices of professional DSLR equipment are pretty high, prohibitive for most casual photographers, so access to this kind of tools is rather limited. But you can build a 130 megapixel camera yourself, using a scanner.
First of all, this is not the type of camera that you carry around your neck for a quick point-and-shoot session in one of your holidays. It’s not meant for shooting fast moving things either. What it can do though is take 130 megapixel pictures. That’s 13,068 x 10,173 pixels, pretty impressive for a home-made scanner camera. The device is built from a 1200-dpi flatbed Epson scanner and a manual-focus Canon lens and has an old-school appearance. Although the author is an amateur photographer who claims that it’s a ‘just for fun’ project, the results of his work are quite remarkable. Not to mention the price of the parts used.
This is a DIY project for the photography enthusiast and, with a little imagination, it could pass off as a microscope. Kidding. Detailed pictures revealing the potency of the 130-megapixel monster are available in the link below.

Huge Resolution Camera

You like listening to radio and your favourite stations use Internet broadcasting? Or you’re sick of commercials between songs or the radio man spoiling the song with some announcement? Here is an award worthy project for you. With this wifi radio you have wireless connectivity to the Internet so you have a huge variety of radio stations to tune in, mp3 decoding, 44.1kHz 16 bit stereo audio, 4W amplifier with two 4 inch speakers, LCD display all this in a very nice vintage looking compact case. Total cost under 100$.
Asus WL-520GU was the choice for the wireless router. For under 50$ it’s a good platform for an embedded Linux system, its only shortcoming would be that it lacks built-in audio. This problem was solved with an USB audio adapter SYBA SD-CM-UAUD for 8$. Notice however the Asus router only supports USB 1.1 which is enough for audio, WL-500GP v2 can be used for USB 2.0. The router has a Broadcom BCM5354KFBG SoC CPU running at 200Mhz, 4MB flash and 16MB SRAM.
The most important part of the project is hacking the WL-520GU. Since it is just a router you will need to write new firmware to turn in into a wifi radio. This is done on the serial port which is pretty easy to access. The chosen open source Linux distribution that supports this router was OpenWRT. In the link you will find a precompiled image, thanks to the designer and builder of this project.
The LCD interface communicates with the WL-520GU by serial using ATmega168 microcontroller. On one of the analog inputs of the Atmel a potentiometer is connected and rotating the pot will make the radio jump to next station.
This is really an advanced project and i just love how it turned out. Lots of information on how to build one yourself is available in the link and I’m sure if you decide to go for it you will not regret it.

Prancing Headless DogBots
I've found this oddly terrifying video (via WFMU) of a four-legged robot being tested out in a variety of field conditions -- mud, snow, and tall grass. The robot itself is oddly familiar, a doglike android with a mincing, prancing step. All four of its legs have reversed knees like a dog's front legs, and the android's high, prance is perfect to allow it to navigate uneven, slippery terrain. In perhaps the most arresting sequence of the video, a man gives the Prancing DogBot a good hard kick to the side, and it regains its balance exactly the way a dog would. It's hard not to feel a wave of sympathy for the kicked machine.
Afterwards, all my sympathy turns into an odd, gnawing fear. This creature moves exactly the way that certain puppets on Sesame Street did that scared the unholy bejesus out of me as a little kid. When things that moved like this Prancing DogBot's legs came on TV, I couldn't even get close enough to turn the thing off -- I'd just bury my head under the couch cushions and try not to hear or see.
Here's the video itself:
As a small child, I had dreams and daytime visions of an army of faceless, soulless creatures marching to kill me and everything good in the world. The creatures would kill me and my teddy bear straight away, but I knew that they would enslave my parents and grandparents and make them do horrible, repetitive things.
Sometimes when I lay very still at night I could hear them marching in lockstep through space and time, getting closer and closer to my closet door which as well know was the gateway to other, more evil dimensions. If the door was shut tight, somehow the creatures from the other dimensions couldn't bust through. Doorknobs, you see, although simple on Earth, were completely alien to the army of prancing dogbots.
it was not until years later that I realized the steady thudding march of the dogbots was just my heartbeat thudding behind my eardrum on a pillow.
Now when I see this video, I am possessed with a similar vision. It is the year 2080, and the cold of winter is just beginning to recede into spring. The last straggling packs of humans have tired of sleeping in caves. Some of the braver souls in our camp spent last night out by the mouth of the cave, exposed to the robots' heatseeking devices and not even hidden by foliage, as the trees are still bare.
We all wake at down to the shrieking, beelike diesel chorus of a dozen dogbots in the not-so-distant distance. From my vantage point on a granite outcropping, I can see a dozen dancing digital dogs nimbly picking their way uphill towards us, the heatseeking laser turrets on their backs sweeping the area.
They haven't found us yet, but they are advancing with their merciless, silly march. I try to shout 'run', but the words will not come. A dark stain spreads across my crude tunic as I realize our fate, even as I ready a boulder over my grey, balding head to crush the first wave of attackers. posted by Jeff Simmermon @ 12:35 AM

Shepard Fairey/Obama "Hope" poster story for Antenna magazine
Right now
, graffiti is totally verboten in the White House—but Shepard Fairey’s working on it. By wheat pasting his now-iconic Obama “Hope” posters all over the streets of America, Fairey has bridged the unbridgeable, aligning the worlds of Graffiti Art and Presidential Politics, uniting law-breakers with law-makers, and gifting the Democrats one helluva campaign contribution— street cred.
Now synonymous with the Democratic Nomination Race of ’08, the posters are classic Fairey: burnished, muted colors, and simple, populist motifs that nod to the work of Communist-era linocut artists like Dmitry Moor and Vladimir Kozlinsky. Yes, it’s ironic that Soviet Red Army propaganda stylings could turn so damn Blue—but the Cold War is long over, and there’s something almost generically American about Fairey’s posters.
Bearing the word “Hope” in a simple, sans serif Gotham font (the kind of lettering seen on liquor-store signs, old-school office buildings and car parks across the nation), the posters present us with a vision of one possible future - Barack Obama in red, white and blue, his expression calm, determined—a nd totally pirated. “Um, we did use an unlicensed image,” admits Fairey, speaking from Studio Number One, his graphic design studio in
Echo
Park
,
Los Angeles
. (He has since been supplied with an approved head shot from the Obama camp.)
The limited edition screen-prints were available on Fairey’s Obey Giant website for about a millisecond before selling out. In fact, judging by web traffic, the Obama posters have been the most popular prints of Fairey’s career. “When the second run of posters came out there were 800,000 people on the site at one time, trying to buy 750 posters,” recalls Fairey. “It was intense.”
It started almost as an afterthought. Two weeks before Super Tuesday, Shepard thought he should put out a poster. He had seen Obama speak at the Democratic Convention in 2004 and liked what he had heard. “I thought ‘maybe in ten years, he’ll run’,” says Fairey. “I doubted he had enough insider clout to run before that, because everything in politics is about relationships and Hillary, I thought, had it sewn up.” Then when Obama won
Iowa
and
New Hampshire
, Fairey re-evaluated. “I thought wow…this is exciting.”
He talked to Yosi Sergant, a young Obama campaigner and publicist, and Sergant took the poster idea to Obama’s camp. “I wanted to make sure I wasn’t seen as an unwelcome endorsement,” says Fairey. “Lets face it, I am a street artist who has been arrested a bunch of times.” Word came back that while no official endorsement was possible, it was OK to go ahead.
Fairey made 700 posters—350 on thin paper to wheat-paste up in
L.A.
, and the rest to sell on his site. When those sold out, he used the money to make 10,000 more, and had them shipped to states where Democratic caucuses and primaries were yet to be held.
Early posters bore either the word “Progress” or “Hope” until Obama’s campaign got in touch, saying they preferred “Hope”. “So I stuck with Hope,” says Fairey, no stranger to the realm of politically-charged, mass distributed poster art (he created several anti-Bush posters in 2000 and 2003). He’s not the first pop artist to vent his political angst – in 1968 Ben Shahn created a hope-based image for Eugene McCarthy. And Andy Warhol’s “Vote McGovern.” poster, produced in 1972, was memorably ironic, bearing a sinister image of McGovern’s opponent Richard Nixon. (Bearing in mind his influence over that elusive youth demographic, does Fairey himself have any political aspirations? No, is the resolute answer. “I speak my mind, which doesn’t go over that well in politics,” he says. “If I had to go into politics, I would be a benevolent dictator.”)
When Fairey posted the image on his website, it went viral. People posted it on their MySpace and Facebook pages, and soon the all corners of the media, from the Huffington Post to
New York
magazine to Gawker, was discussing the “Hope” poster. The Obama campaign got in touch again, this time about the legality of the image. They asked Fairey to create an illustration from a photo of Obama they had rights to use – and that’s when the third “Change” poster was born. (It is now featured Barack Obama.com, where it helped raise $350,000 for the campaign, before selling out). To date, he’s produced 80,000 posters and stickers, the vast majority of which have been glued up around the country. “I had no idea the image was going to resonate the way it did,” says Fairey.
Since then, dozens of artists have followed suit, creating responses to the poster (Michael Ian Weinfeld’s “Pope” parody, for instance), or pro-Obama images of their own (Ron English’s “Abraham Obama” poster). In
Houston
, local street art collective Aerosol Warfare painted a giant replica of the “Hope” poster on the side of Obama’s headquarters there. Also in
Texas
, art collective Upper Playground commissioned Coachella Valley-based fine art duo The Date Farmers to create an Obama “Change” poster in the spirit of Shepard’s work. “Shepard was really the touch stone,” says Sergant, who facilitated the original poster campaign. “He was the first person to jump in the pool.”
And in jumping right in, gave Barack Obama a more powerful youth endorsement than anything millions of dollars in advertising could have bought.
Senator McCain should take note.

Biometric Passports Coming to Switzerland
In one of the closest votes in Swiss history, the people of Switzerland decided on May 17 to approve a new biometric passport. The passport will be equipped with an electronic chip containing the holder’s photograph and two fingerprints. The yes vote will make Switzerland compliant with other countries of the European single-border area, which are required to introduce biometric passports by March 2010. The new passport will also allow visa-free entry into the United States. The margin for the vote across Switzerland was only a majority of 50.1 percent, although voter turnout was low at 38 percent. Most negative votes centered on the fact that the personal data for the passports would be stored in a central database and people's concerns that it may be vulnerable to security breaches. The vote, however, was driven by younger Swiss who, through a cross-party online campaign, collected the signatures to mount the referendum. It was also widely supported by the business, tourism and expatriate sectors.

UNDERWATER BIRTH - The Ultimate Alternative
By Binnie A. Dansby
PRE- AND PERINATAL PSYCHOLOGY, An Introduction, Chapter 10
Edited by Thomas R. Verny, M.D. (1984)
Human Sciences Press, Inc. 72 Fifth Avenue, New York, N.Y.10011--8004
It is my personal belief that underwater birth is the ultimate alternative available in birthing practices at this time.
In early 1980, in a supermarket in Pacific Beach, California, I saw a newspaper with a picture of a baby underwater. The mother's body was half submerged. On close inspection I could see that this was birth, and my whole self said YES! I purchased the newspaper and read for the first time about Igor Charkovsky and his research in Russia.
My personal journey to that supermarket began in 1966 when I read BIRTH WITHOUT FEAR by Grantly Dick-Read. During labour I tried to follow his instructions, but the more I relaxed the more fear surfaced. Each contraction brought more pain, and finally I asked to be drugged. It was a terrible experience - 12 hours of excruciating pain and then unconsciousness. I felt disconnected from my baby and a frustration that I could not identify. It just made me sad and angry. I declared to my husband as we were leaving the hospital. "There has to be a better way to birth a baby. We know too much about ourselves. I am going to find that way or I am not going to have another child!"
Two years later, in 1968, I gave birth in the same hospital, with the same doctor and the same husband. This time the experience was drug free, painless, and very real work. I experienced an orgasm when my second son, Robert, presented. In the two intervening years I had read every book I could find on the psychology and physiology of birth, breastfeeding and parenting. I became pregnant after I was told about psychoprophylaxis, the Lamaze method. I spent a considerable amount of time with women who had given birth using this method. With little or no support available in the medical community in that time and place. I knew I must take full responsibility for my birth experience. I was convinced before I began the training process that we would have a successful outcome.
Although I returned to my career in fashion design, I was still fascinated with and continued research in birth and birthing practices, as well as studies in psychology, parapsychology, and my own spirituality. In 1975, I met Leonard Orr, the creator of the rebirthing process and philosophy.
Rebirthing is a personal process utilising the breath as a tool for the surfacing and release of physiological stress and thought patterns from previous life experiences. Those who have been rebirthed report remembering and reexperiencing their births. Through this process it is possible to eliminate primal trauma and transform the subconscious impression of birth into a gentle and awakening event. Rebirthing supports the experience of safety, innocence, and trust. It is practised both in the water and on dry land.
I studied with Leonard Orr, and in my own rebirthing process, among a myriad of benefits, I released my fears of birth and of water. I realised that birthing and being birthed are so interwoven in thoughts and feelings of mother and child that this rebirthing process would be invaluable for a woman who is pregnant. She could release prejudice and fear, which cause contraction, stress, and pain in labour. If a woman could retrieve birth and in utero experiences of her own, she would be more certain of her power to influence her child's personality and experience. I became determined to be a fine rebirther and counsellor; and to work with pregnant couples to strive to create the gentlest anxiety- and violence-free births possible.
Enter Igor Charkovsky. Charkovsky believes that unlearning the genetic fear of water is the key to the continued mental and physical development of the human race. "Human development has been at a standstill for many thousands of years; has reached an impasse. A life in the water offers new possibilities for development" (Sidenbladh, 1982). Water is the cradle of life. We must note that although we have evolved to our present stage over the more than 3 billion years since life originated in the oceans, we still create our bodies through all the stages of evolution in water, in the womb. Charkovsky believes that the step from water onto land created a duel between living creatures and gravity that has lasted millions of years. In water the effect of gravity is lessened greatly. The need for oxygen decreases by 60 to 75 percent. The body's energy can be more efficiently utilised for healing and development. Charkovsky says: "Not until I had done thousands of experiments with animals did I begin to understand what kind of problem I was attempting to solve. Up to then I hadn't really realised how deep down in the unconscious mind of all land animals ----including man --- the fear of water lies. I could never have dreamed of the complex view which exists between different sides of the problem, of the subtleness with which our "forefathers and mothers" control our way of viewing the world, of the forces which take part in the battle between old and new in our way of thinking (Sidenbladh, 1982)
In a birth with Dr. Charkovsky, the mother and father have been in water training for months. They have spent time with others working with the doctor, both babies and adults. The woman spends all her labour and delivery in the tank of water. Assisting at the birth are a midwife, nurses, and "sensitives" --- people with parapsychological abilities who keep the situation under control by reading the bio-fields and reporting impending danger for the water birth. They handle the energy of the fear of water.
The emphasis here is to learn to live in a water environment to achieve the highest potential physically and mentally. Water-trained babies appear to be more intelligent, healthier, and better motor co-ordinated than babies reared in a conventional manner.
Dr. Charkovsky spent time as a boy near the Siberian-Mongolian border with "healers", those who use their energy to heal and influence others. He is an engineer and an athletic coach and has studied in the fields of biology, psychology, and midwifery. He has said that the most exact description of the work he is involved in is, "…an investigation into the opportunities for developing human potential. I have devoted the last twenty years of my life to solving the problem of how we can help new-borns adjust to water's environment. This is a problem, which cannot be restricted to any particular field --- medicine, psychology, biology. It requires a comprehensive overall view which cot only encompasses the traditional sciences but also border areas such as parapsychology (Sidenbladh, 1982)
I salute Igor Charkovsky's courage. He is neither lauded nor supported by the scientific community in Russia. I have quoted Dr. Charkovsky from the book WATER BABIES by Erik Sidenbladh. The piece of manuscript I received was translated from the Swedish by Wendy Crotch.
Reading in the supermarket newspaper about Dr. Charkovsky's work opened my mind and my heart to the possibility of bringing birth to an even gentler more spiritual mode than Leboyer did. Until that time I had thought that Leboyer's soft lights, low tones and water bath administered by the father would be idea if each person present also were aware of the influence of their thoughts on the vulnerable mother and child. I was then and am now sure that a "baby-advocate" or "sensitive" is necessary at each birth, especially at high-tech births where the mother and baby have received drugs. The "baby-advocate" would focus on mother and child during labour to receive messages of distress and to communicate psychically and verbally to the baby that all is well, that he (the baby) is safe, that everyone is doing the best that they can, and that everyone is there to serve the baby.
When I saw that it was possible to give birth in water, it began to make sense that a woman allowed to move freely and relax in warm water during labour would be more in control and would be better able to communicate with and receive communication from her baby. I knew that a woman who was unafraid would dilate and release her baby more easily in the comfortable and buoyant water atmosphere. She would naturally communicate safety to her baby, as well as security and well being. Joan Liedloff states in THE CONTINUUM CONCEPT (1977) "What a baby encounters at birth is what he/she feels the nature of life to be. After a typical hospital birth the baby knows life to be unspeakably lonely, unresponsive to his/her signals and full of pain." In my experience as a rebirther, countless people have described those feelings of danger and alienation interwoven throughout their lives. Instead of life on planet Earth being full of potential and a safe place to be, everything and everyone is to be feared on some level of consciousness.
I realised that birth into water would slow the birth process, giving time for assimilation of each step. We have found this to be true. A baby born into water can unfold and let go of tension and stress before encountering the crush of gravity and the new experience of breathing in an unknown atmosphere. Why not be born directly into the bath and not have to be taken away from Mother? Why not remain connected to Mother while getting used to an open body in an expanded universe.
As the possibility of alleviating undue stress in birth became clearer to me, I realised that learning potential could be dramatically effected. Learning is more difficult when tension and stress are the underlying state of being. All forms of creativity are less available to the anxious person. In THE MAGICAL CHILD, Joseph Chilton Pearce (1977) says "Intelligence grows by moving from the known to the unknown and referring back to the known. No new experience can be accepted and interpreted unless it has at least some similarity to past experience." A new being moving from water to water, from mother's womb to mother's arms, while encountering countless new experiences could become a more centred and relaxed person for whom effective problem solving, artistic expression, and service to others are natural and effortless.
My friends Patrick and Jia Lighthouse were equally excited about the potential and possibility of birthing a baby into water. Jia became pregnant within a month of reading about Charkovsky's work, and we began to prepare for what would be the first documented underwater birth in the United States. Both Patrick and Jia were rebirthed regularly, often in water. Preparation also included hypnotherapy and writing affirmations to clear out negative thoughts and fears. Jia gave careful attention to nutrition. Three to 4 weeks before the birth they rented a fibreglass hot tub, scrubbed it with germicides, and filled it with distilled water, adding salt to make a normal saline solution (0.9% sodium chloride). Other preparations were the same as for any home birth.
Our inner conviction that "this is the right thing to do" never wavered, although we encountered opposition from the doctors and most midwives whom we asked to attend. Patrick's attempts to correspond with Dr. Charkovsky brought no answers, and we were unaware of Dr. Odent at that time. Jia has said, "the greatest motivational force behind our decision to create a water birth for our child was love. We loved this new baby so much we wanted to give him the gentlest, easiest, most heart-warming welcome into this world that we could."
The people who were to attend the birth gathered as a group three times to clear fears and doubts and to align as a group to create a supportive ambience. Babies are vulnerable to all the thoughts around them at birth. We wanted this baby to be greeted by unhurried, joyful friends, not by fear and indifference. I believe that the way we bring forth new life is an expression of how we view life itself. In order to have peace around us, as we all say we do, we must first find safety and trust and peace within, and give birth to our children and our projects from that state of being. Jeremy's birth was awe-inspiring for everyone. It was a highly spiritual celebration of life.
This labour was 2 hours in length, as opposed to 48 hours the first time. Jia very naturally turned to hands-and-knees position to deliver 10 and1/2 pound Jeremy. Patrick supported his son's entry into the world and often comments that it was he who had the opportunity to lift his son for his first breath. Water babies are not shocked or startled, nor forced to take a first breath. While still receiving oxygen and nutrients through the umbilical cord and being held in mother's arms, they play with the air.
Jeremy stayed underwater for 20 minutes. Patrick was holding the cord, and Jia, in tune with her body and her baby, sensed when the placenta was about to detach. Jeremy was then brought to the surface to learn to breathe gently. About 30 minutes after he surfaced I was holding Jeremy while Jia was being checked. He was breathing well, and the cord had not yet been cut. As I held him close, I noticed he began a breathing rhythm that duplicated the way I had often instructed Jia to breathe in rebirthing sessions. It was a rapid connected breath. I thought, but did not say, OK, now let's take a deep cleansing breath, ---Jeremy did just that. He took a deep breath and looked right into my eyes. I could only say "Thank you!" and greet my old friend. Jeremy's birth was the most peaceful event of my life up to that point.
In subsequent births where I have participated, the mother has brought the baby to the surface within3 to 5 minutes. Once the baby has let go, relaxed after the stress in the birth canal, the next step ---surfacing --- can take place. I assisted one father in catching his son. I was deeply moved as I felt the baby's release in the warm, familiar surrounding ---like feeling a flower unfold.
In a dream prior to Jeremy's birth, one of several dreams that dealt with preparation for the birth, I was instructed to saturate the first receiving blanket he was wrapped in with apricot kernel oil. I now ask each mother to decide what nurturing oil she feels her baby wants. Each has been different.
On the day Jeremy was born, 28 October, 1980, in La Jolla, California, Estelle Myers was meditating with a group of people on a beach across the ocean in Australia. Their focus was communication with the dolphins. Estelle is known in Australia and New Zealand as the "Dolphin Lady". She received a telepathic message that day saying that from now on babies should be born into water on planet Earth.
Estelle believes, as many of us do, that we have much to learn from this gentle, peaceful, intelligent, communal creature, the dolphin. Estelle set out there and then to create the Rainbow Dolphin Centre in Tutulaka, New Zealand, where underwater birth could be supported; and after researching Charkovsky's work, she also encourages water training of the underwater babies. Estelle has encountered opposition on many levels, the medical community as well as the courts. There does appear to be more midwife support so far in New Zealand than we have in the United States. At last report there have been 16 underwater births in New Zealand. Estelle Myers is a remarkable woman of unbounded energy and deserves support and acknowledgement in her quest for peace.
I have participated in seven underwater births since Jeremy's, and four births where the mother laboured in water but had to be transferred to the hospital because of complications. In two of the water births the cord was wrapped around the baby's neck, one was around twice. In each instance the father was able to release the cord gently; a potential complication was alleviated in the water before trying to take a breath. I am aware of 11 underwater births on the West Coast, and there have been underwater births in Texas and Florida.
Because underwater births are not yet accepted by the medical profession in the United States, they take place at home. Since Jeremy's birth we have used the bottom half of a fibreglass Float-to-Relax tank for some of the births and now use a tank designed by an underwater father and myself. This tank is 8 feet by 4 feet by 2 feet, and it is portable. It is a frame of plastic piping covered by carpet and vinyl, with a beanbag chair for seated support. Most women deliver in the sit-squat position or on their hands and knees. The baby is "caught" by the father or a midwife and put into the mother's arms for her to bring the baby to the surface at breast level, an ideal position for eye-to-eye bonding. While underwater, the baby is receiving oxygen and nutrients from the placenta via the umbilical cord. Both Dr. Charkovsky and Dr. Odent affirm that as long as the primitive brain controls the baby, the baby is perfectly adapted to immersion. Dr. Charkovsky says that water does not kill; that it is fear that kills. The physical process of birth is slowed down so that the system can adapt more gently. The baby is kept at the same level as the placenta or higher. I have seen only one incident of tearing in all the water births (including the births of two 10 and 1/2-pound boys), and that was a tiny tear that did not even need repair. The circumstance was a fast, intense labour and delivery (1 hour from onset of labour).
Emotionally and spiritually, water birth is a peaceful and gentle entry for the new human being and its mother. Allowed to labour in water, the mother has a maximum amount of comfort and the choice of her bed or the water. The atmosphere is safe, secure, and warm. Familiar people whom she has chosen and who are ready and willing to do what ever she wishes support the labouring woman. All of those present recognise her vulnerability and their own psychic impact on the birth experience. There is the opportunity for the father to participate as fully as he chooses; couples report a deeper bond in their relationship; and fathers enjoy an immediate close relationship with the new baby.
A woman focused on the task of opening an letting go must be assisted and encouraged to overcome her fear and handle her contractions as she chooses. No orders are given. Bradley and Lamaze breathing methods are used, as well as the connected "rebirthing" breath. When a woman is in charge and working to release her child, the experience for the baby is one of pressure and deep massage, as opposed to a mother full of fear and blame, which causes the experience for the baby to be one of constriction and pain. A child born into an atmosphere of safety and ease and welcome will move into life with just that point of view. Memories of shock and the physical pain of conventional birth are retained in the subconscious mind and in the body throughout our lifetime or until those memories are released. A woman who has prepared and comes to the birth experience without negative memories and barriers does not create a negative experience and beginning for her child.
There is strong opposition to this alternative, water birth, from many people, not just the medical community. It is important to honour your fears as long as you have them. Water birth is not for everyone. It must be a step taken on careful consideration and with full trust and responsibility. Recognising the centuries of thought that we in our culture have passed from generation to generation as to the nature of life and how we are supposed to give birth, I feel that preparation is necessary for a successful, gentle birth experience. We must be open to possibilities for growth and change, conscious evolution, before those changes can take place. No matter where they plan to give birth, the people with whom I work prepare with rebirthing, writing affirmations, group sharing and support, values-clarification processes, meditation and relaxation techniques, Bradley or Lamaze training. They view films of underwater birth and gentle home birth, and counsel with couples who have experienced joyous, painless birth and underwater birth. Each individual mother (and her partner as well) has the opportunity to experience a personal transformation in the process of giving birth, thus transferring to the child the thoughts that life is peaceful and pleasurable; that change, while inevitable, is not something to fear; that new beginnings do not create separation; that taking responsibility for the circumstances of being alive in a body does not mean pain or burden. An experience of accomplishment, satisfaction, and mastery is achieved in fully conscious participation with the creative process.
At each water birth I have been reminded again of something that Albert Einstein said:
The most beautiful and most profound emotion we can experience is the sensation of the mystical. It is the source of all true science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead. That deeply emotional conviction of the presence of a superior reasoning power, which is revealed in the incomprehensible universe, forms my idea of God.
I believe we can transform the quality of life on earth by transforming the quality of the birth experience.

I believe we can transform the quality of life on earth by transforming the quality of the birth experience.

Dr. Charkovsky spent time as a boy near the Siberian-Mongolian border with "healers", those who use their energy to heal and influence others. http://freedominourtime.blogspot.com/2006/09/grand-old-torture-party.html If Mitt Romney were exactly the same candidate – the same vaguely Ted Dansoneque looks, the same privileged upbringing, spewing the same Osterized rhetoric – but was a Muslim rather than a Mormon, the Theo-Cons would hardly be as eager to denounce the use of “religious tests.”
The doctrinal differences that separate Mormon beliefs from mainline Christianity are as numerous and as significant as those dividing Dar al-Islam from the Christian world. In some ways Mormonism is closer kindred to Islam than it is to conventional Christianity.(.pdf)
