Biometric Passports Coming to Switzerland

In one of the closest votes in Swiss history, the people of Switzerland decided on
May 17 to approve a new biometric passport. The passport will be equipped with
an electronic chip containing the holder’s photograph and two fingerprints. The
 yes vote will make Switzerland compliant with other countries
of the European single-border area, which are required to introduce biometric
 passports by March 2010.
The new passport will also allow visa-free entry into the United States. The margin for the vote across
Switzerland was only a majority of 50.1 percent, although voter turnout was low at 38 percent. Most
 negative votes centered on the fact that the personal data for the passports would be stored in a
central database and people's concerns that it may be vulnerable to security breaches. The vote, however,
was driven by younger Swiss who, through a cross-party online campaign, collected the signatures to
mount the referendum. It was also widely supported by the business, tourism and expatriate sectors.

Facing the FACTS that the 9/11 attacks were an inside job (ie; why were A3D SkyWarrior parts strewn at the Pentagon on 9/11?) would mean YOU would have to get off your asses and FIGHT REAL EVIL, and criminals like Bush/Cheney have no hesitation to go assassinate folks like Paul Wellstone and his wife. It takes real moral and physical courage to fight real evil, the physical courage to kill lest you be killed in war is not so remarkable when so may alleged "courageous" veterans fail to stand up to war mongers here at home.

Sunday, December 21, 2008 http://cgullworld.blogspot.com/2008_12_01_archive.html Cellphone Hacked To Analyze Blood And Detect Diseases U.S. researchers have modified the cell phone to bring a portable device that can analyze blood and detect disease on the spot at rural places and developing countries. Dr. Aydogan Ozcan, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and his team  have hacked the cell phone to make them as portable medical devices that can be used to analyze the blood in patients and detect any disease. Such devices will come in handy in villages and in developing countries where  medical instruments, medical labs and hospitals are scarce and expensive. Dr. Ozcan converted the regular cell phone by adding a light-emitting diode (LED), a plastic light filter and wires and converted into a portable blood tester that is capable of detecting HIV, malaria, and other illnesses. The phone images blood cells sample with a camera sensor built and is lighted with a filtered-light source (coherent light). This image is then analyzed with Dr. Ozcan’s custom software and interprets the results within minutes. This eliminates the need to send the samples to labs and wait hours or days to  get the results back. Here is a simple  and efficient way to build your own Hydroponic re-circulating solar powered system. I still  like to call it "gardens in the air-powered by the sun". The method of building is very easy. All you need is a solar panel to power your under water motor, lots of containers to put your plants in and of course some wooden or  concrete structure. I suggest you use earth pots rather than plastic ones as shown in the video. You obviously can improvise both with the shape and structure. So delve  in and discover the art. Tuesday, March 3, 2009 Superfly Superfoods! I just wanted to use ‘superfly’ in a sentence today! But in all seriousness, I did some taste testing of Superfoods over the weekend, all in my quest to become a stronger athlete all around. And that applies not only to what I do to my body, but also what I put into my body. After a rough start to last week, I was able to get back on track and had some great workouts. Enjoyed a great run with the team on Thursday night, put in a solid 3+ hour bike ride out on 9W on Saturday morning, and then enjoyed a leisurely hour-long run on Sunday along the river. But on Saturday afternoon, my friend and teammate Tamara, who’s a certified Holistic Health Counselor from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition in NYC and passionate raw foodie, invited several of us over to her apartment for a Superfood demonstration and taste test. Let me back up here by saying that I’ve known Tamara since my days on Team in Training. Last year, during our trip to Gulf Coast for the Half Ironman, the girl brought a week’s worth of fruits and veges with her, along with a single-size blender! She was in the hotel room next to me, whipping up smoothies and downing raw veges non-stop and we gave her a hard time about it, but I can honestly say she is the healthiest eater I know! Last fall, I took her up on an offer to cook dinner for me. I was unsure what I was in for, as I’d seen (and tasted!) one of her health shakes before…and the one shake tried..well, it tasted and looked like mud to me! Ha – it wasn’t that bad! Everyone has different tastes and that one didn’t do it for me! But I’m always open to trying new foods and all that fresh food always looks so appealing. And let me say, she did not disappoint! She made this delicious gluten-free, brown rice pasta with mixed veges, sautéed fresh garlic cloves, prepared an amazing green salad, and of course had an assortment of peeled carrots and cucumbers ready for munching. I left feeling so satisfied! The girl knows her raw foods! :) On another occasion, I also had a chance to dine with her and another friend at Caravan of Dreams where we ate "live" nachos. And they were soooo good! Tamara’s quest to embrace the raw food lifestyle is a personal journey that is really amazing – I won’t go into details, but let me say that she’s created a healthy food plan that fuels her body, energizes her, and keeps her health issues in check! Not to mention, the stories she shared about her family and their experiences with a macrobiotic diet will just astound you! Needless to say, I have much respect for this young lady! She has recently decided to pursue a Masters in Vegan and Live-food Nutrition, which is a two year program culminating with a thesis. From there, she’ll be launching a consultation business full-time. I have no doubt she’ll be very successful because her passion for the raw foods/Superfoods is contagious! So on Saturday, she had prepared a variety of samples. We started out with some green smoothies. The first one was a spinach-peach smoothie and it tasted…delicious! So light and refreshing. And it literally consisted of water, spinach and peaches! Tamara has this awesome blender called the Vita-Mix that (no joke) blends at 240 mph. Impressive right? That thing could chop wood! We joked that the wood and bark smoothie would be up next! We also got to help her make a Mint-Chard-Pear smoothie. I’m not much of a pear lover, but this one actually tasted even better to me. The mint combined with the sweetness of the pear was so yummy! Fun fact – she told us that the reason people complain of gassiness after eating greens is often due to the fact that they don’t fully chew the leafy greens thoroughly. Digestion starts in the mouth. Remember that! Fortunately for us, the Vita-Mix totally pureed our greens into a creamy goodness that we gulped on down! In addition, we also enjoyed a good laugh as we downed her “spicy chocolate recovery balls,” a recipe she found in the book called The Thrive Diet, by Brendan Brazier, who is a well-known triathlete. We sampled cacao nibs, inca berries (Tamara describes them as her version of Sour Patch Kids!), a trail mix made in her own dehydrator, a mint chip smoothie comprised of coconut milk, agave, vanilla stevia, peppermint stevia, hemp seeds, sea salt and cacao nibs (unbelievable!) and this pudding that reminded me of tapioca. In addition, she showed us how to make hemp milk. Yes, hemp milk – it’s got tons of protein and when she showed us how to do a “chocolate” version, I pretty much died and went to heaven. It was like finding a truly healthy version of a chocolate milkshake! To top things off, she threw a bunch of amazing ingredients into the Vita-Mix and made the crowning achievement – a Superfood Smoothie! In addition to the bananas and berries that went into it, there were Superfood ingredients like maca powder, cacao nibs, blue green algae, and goji berries. You’re thinking, wow, that sounds like quite the conconction, right? Well guess what? It was awesome! And so great for the body! Though we only had sips and samples of each of the foods, I left feeling quite full from all the protein, fiber, and nutrients I’d ingested! Fun Fact #2 - Cacao is the number one Superfood and Goji Berries are number two! Since its Lent right now, I’ve given up soda (I live for my daily diet coke) because it basically does nothing for my body and I don’t really need it. I figured this was a good time to take it out, as I move closer to race day. And you know what? It’s been a week now and I haven’t even missed it! Haven’t even gotten a caffeine headache! Speaking of caffeine, I’m not a coffee drinker, but many of my teammates were interested in alternatives to their daily coffee fix. Tamara opened up a bottle of “Island Fire,” – that’s really what it’s called! – and people took shots of it! It’s this tonic elixir with Tahitian noni….a real energy booster! I refrained from taking a shot since it was already the evening and Tamara warned it was so potent it might keep us up that night! Superfood indeed! The main thing that Tamara encouraged was to leave her apartment that day with ideas! She suggested that we each try to incorporate one or two things and make small changes if we wanted to. She didn’t push anything onto anyone…there was totally no pressure. It was just a fun way to get exposure and learn about how to nourish the body and give it the best possible nutrients. And that just made me all the more eager to make more changes! I even put her advice about choosing organic produce into action this morning, opting for the organic strawberries since that’s a fruit so porous it absorbs any pesticides that are sprayed onto it. With the diet coke out and some new ideas about how to incorporate Superfoods and maximize the nutrients I take in by eating raw veges and maybe trying some smoothies, I’m feeling optimistic about the upcoming race and bikini season! U.S. Scientists predict that Light-emitting Diodes (LEDs) and Smart Lighting techniques  could save trillions of dollars in the next few years if more embrace them instead of the fluorescent and Compact Fluorescent lamps. E. Fred Schubert and Jong Kyu Kim, professors at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute have written a report and firmly believe LEDs will revolutionize the lighting industry the same way transistors did for the electronics industry. Recently there have been number of innovations and when they are adopted in the coming  years we can save trillion dollars in costs savings coupled with a massive reduction in the amount of energy required lighting homes and businesses worldwide. The professors predict that a new generation of lighting devices based on LEDs will replace the light bulb in the next few years and will help us save considerable amount of money and  also have environmental benefits. LEDs are safer than the fluorescent lamps and compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) and consume less energy than both. The LEDs consumes 20 times less power than conventional light bulb and five times less power than CFL. Schubert and Kim have written a paper on this subject called “Transcending the replacement paradigm of solid-state lighting” in the December 22, 2008 issue of Optics Express. They expect LEDs will be widely used in healthcare, transportation systems, digital displays  and computer networking areas. Another advantage the LEDs have is that they can be tweaked to work in any situation. Schubert and Kim believe that if all the light bulbs in homes and businesses are replaced with LEDs in the next 10 years, they derive the following benefits: • Energy savings of 1.9 × 1020 joules • Electrical energy consumption would be reduced by terawatt hours • Financial savings of $1.83 trillion • Carbon dioxide emissions would be reduced by 10.68 gigatons • Crude oil consumption would be reduced by 962 million barrels • The number of required global power plants would be reduced by 280 They want the industry and researchers to work together and develop a comprehensive  LEDs lighting system technology. Schubert and Kim wrote in the paper: "Deployed on a large scale, LEDs have the potential to tremendously reduce pollution, save energy, save financial resources, and add new and unprecedented functionalities to photonic devices. These factors make photonics what could be termed a benevolent tsunami, an irresistible wave, a solution to many global challenges currently faced by humanity and will be facing even more in the years  to come," The smart light application with LEDs can not only be  used in homes but also can be used   for rapid biological cell identification, interactive roadways, boosting plant  growth and reduce the risk of certain type of cancers. Abstract
The field of photonics starts with the efficient generation of light. The generation of efficient yet highly controllable light can indeed be accomplished with light-emitting diodes (LEDs), which are, in principle, capable of generating white light with a 20 times greater efficiency than conventional light bulbs. Deployed on a global scale to replace conventional sources, such solid-state light sources will result in enormous benefits that, over a period of 10 years, include (1) gigantic energy savings of 1.9 × 1020 joule, (2) a very substantial reduction in global-warming CO2 emissions, (3) a strong reduction in the emission of pollutants such as acid-rain-causing SO2, mercury (Hg), and uranium (U), and (4) financial savings exceeding a trillion (1012) US$. These benefits can be accomplished by the “replacement paradigm” in which conventional light sources are replaced by more energy efficient, more durable, and non-toxic light sources. owever, it will be shown that solid-state light sources can go beyond the replacement paradigm, by providing new capabilities including the control of spectrum, color temperature, polarization, temporal modulation, and spatial emission pattern. We will show that such future, “smart” light sources, can harness the huge potential of LEDs by offering multi-dimensional controllability that will enhance the functionality and performance of light sources in a wide range of applications. These applications include optical microscopy, imaging, display technologies, communications, networking, and transportation systems.

It serves as a non-anthropomorphic robotic platform as part of Guy Hoffman's Ph.D thesis on human-robot fluency and nonverbal behavior. The lamp's design was conceived around an existing 5-DoF robotic arm, and is aimed to evoke a personal relationship with the human partner without resorting to human-like features. By retaining the lamp's "objectness", I hope to explore the relationship that can be maintained through abstract gestures and nonverbal behavior alone. The lamp is animated using a custom pipeline enabling the dynamic control of behaviors authored in a 3d animation system. This week, it will take its first stab at performing alongside human actors in MIT Dramashop's Playwrights in Performance. That's right, a robot, on stage, live, with nothing but an emergency button to save it. What: "The Confessor" - a play by Rony Kubat written especially for this human-robot ensemble. Hot on the heels of 'Pee standing up for the Earth' come these bogtastic urinals for Europe.
One pint of water per flush might be something to write home about on your side of the pond,
but here in Europe, we've already seen our fair share of .

It turns out that the two main problems with not having water run around your loo after each
 pee are odor and blockage. Odor isn't as much of a problem as you would think, as specially
designed traps can pretty much eliminate smells escaping. The other problem is blockage -
solids and salts accumulate in the traps of waterless urinals - however, two litres of hot water
a week poured down them is enough to ensure they stay clear.

Furthermore, the people at IFO have solutions for times when you just have to sit down.
Some of their loos will clear the bowl using as little as two litres of water for less serious
matters - whilst effectively clearing the bowl using as little as four litres - a shade over a
U.S. Gallon.

Furthermore, taking water out of the equation altogether - with a solution that may seem a
 little extreme to the average U.S. consumer - but one which might appeal to EcoGeeks is the
'' - now being carried at Home Depots - a compost toilet biologically digests waste
 to produce harmless compost as a waste product. If the balance of biological functions in a
composting toilet is maintained at the correct levels then it should emit no odor at all!
