Biometric Passports Coming to Switzerland

In one of the closest votes in Swiss history, the people of Switzerland decided on
May 17 to approve
a new biometric passport. The passport will be equipped with
an electronic chip containing the holder’s photograph and two fingerprints. The
 yes vote will make Switzerland
compliant with other countries
of the European single-border area
, which are required to introduce biometric
 passports by March 2010.
The new passport will also allow visa-free entry into the United States. The margin for the vote across
Switzerland was only a majority of 50.1 percent, although voter turnout was low at 38 percent. Most
negative votes centered on the fact that the personal data for the passports would be stored in a
central database and people's concerns that it may be vulnerable to security breaches. The vote, however,
was driven by younger Swiss who, through a cross-party online campaign, collected the signatures to
mount the referendum. It was also widely supported by the business, tourism and expatriate sectors.

Why We Fight: America's Economic Addiction to War

http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=295C0150CD345B40

Gavin's brilliant and moral outlook on societal reform is best seen in his 1968 book, Crisis Now which clearly advocates engaging in direct solving of people's problems not shutting them up with consumer goods.

Yet Bush who calls the U.S. Constitution he swore to defend a "goddamed piece of paper" LIED TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE AND OUR SOLDIERS TO GET US INTO A NEEDLESS WAR AND OCCUPATION OF IRAQ TO GO ALONG WITH THE PNAC NEOCON AGENDA. See the "smoking gun" document above proving that as soon as he took power in 2001, he was war mongering to take-over Iraq. Bush and his entire administration are crooks and scoundrel who need to be removed from office before they can instigate or tolerate another "terror attack" so they can suspend the U.S. Constitution and stay in power as a fascist elite.

Basically some of you don't want to admit that like Nero setting Rome on fire, the Reichstag fire, Pearl Harbor and the Gulf of Tonkin "Incident" that government insiders instigate events to drag people to war. Facing the FACTS that the 9/11 attacks were an inside job (ie; why were A3D SkyWarrior parts strewn at the Pentagon on 9/11?) would mean YOU would have to get off your asses and FIGHT REAL EVIL, and criminals like Bush/Cheney have no hesitation to go assassinate folks like Paul Wellstone and his wife. It takes real moral and physical courage to fight real evil, the physical courage to kill lest you be killed in war is not so remarkable when so may alleged "courageous" veterans fail to stand up to war mongers here at home.

Hermann Goering, Hitler's deputy and Luftwaffe Chief said:

"Why of course the people don't want war. Why should some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece? Naturally the common people don't want war: neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country."

Today America is sick from the disease of Patriotic Correctness, not much different than from the Clinton-era "PCness" groupthink.

Racket: An organized, self-perpetuating, self-serving, less-than-optimal "solutional" beavior to a societal need/want

Reading Professor Roger Thompson's new book, "Lessons not Learned" there is a constant theme of the
U.S. Navy lying and denying its failures. So you ask yourself WHY would the USN not be interested in military efficiency excellence?

http://www.metaefficient.com/leds/led-light-bulbs.html#more-2407

I recently had the chance to test two state-of-the-art LED light bulbs from EarthLED.
LED bulbs have many advantages over incandescents and compact fluorescent: they use very
little power, they last 10 years or more, and they contain no hazardous
substances. They are also tough: they can be dropped and turned off and on repeated
without damage, they can operate in very cold or warm temperatures.

 ZetaLux Series

Introducing ZetaLux™ - 7 Watt LED Light Bulb

ZetaLux, the LED Light Bulb Reimagined

Breaking News! EarthLED ZetaLux now UL Listed and FCC Approved!

The EarthLED ZetaLux has just achieved another milestone for LED technology by becoming the first UL Listed and FCC approved LED light lamp for general household illumination. The UL listing further affirms the advanced safety technologies built into every ZetaLux. In addition, the UL listing now allows the use of the ZetaLux in facilities and buildings where this certification is required. We're proud of this achievement and happy to continue to offer ZetaLux, the light bulb reimagined!

The UL Listed ZetaLux

The New State-Of-The-Art

Presenting ZetaLux, a new LED light bulb that redefines value oriented performance. ZetaLux uses only 7 watts of electricity meaning it will cost only $2.00 to run 8 Hours per Day for an entire year. ZetaLux uses the latest in LED light engine technology from CREE to create light that is equivalent to that of a 50-60 watt incandescent. How is this possible?

Much like our best selling EvoLux, ZetaLux wastes very little light achieving over 95% luminary efficiency. In short, this means when installed in a typical lamp or down light, the ZetaLux doesn't casts all of its light towards the lamp shade or the object beneath it. No light is directed below the bulb where it is not used. In fact, near the center of its beam the ZetaLux even outperforms traditional 60 watt incandescents.

ZetaLux Luminary Efficiency in Action

LED Luminary Efficiency

Additionally, this latest generation light engine features a very high CRI or Color Rendering Index. CRI is a a good way to determine the quality of light and its faithfulness to render colors correctly, ZetaLux features a a CRI of 75 for cool white and 80 for Warm White making them some of the highest in the industry.

Smart Engineering, it's Everywhere.

Ever since we introduced high power LED lighting to consumers and businesses we've seen products enter the market that are cheaply made at best and dangerous at worst. When developing the ZetaLux we concentrated on making a product that not only will perform for a decade or longer but will do so safely in your home or business.

Every single component of the ZetaLux was considered during its development. Its large aluminum heat sink is the perfect shape for optimal heat dissipation allowing the ZetaLux to remain warm to the touch even after running for days. The plastic base that houses the ZetaLux control circuitry is made of flame retardant plastic while the globe that covers the LED emitter is virtually unbreakable. The ZetaLux contains no hazardous substances and is fully RoHS compliant.

ZetaLux LED Light Bulb

We tested the ZetaLux in extreme conditions: in frigid -50 degree frost all the way up to scorching 180 degree heat. We even used the ZetaLux in a steamy room with 95% humidity. The results were clear, even under extreme stress the ZetaLux performs. Try that with your CFL or incandescent bulb or for that matter, any other manufacturers LED light bulb!

Simply Greener than CFLs.

Like all our products, the ZetaLux is simply in another league when it comes to safety and environmental friendliness. While governments around the world along with consumers wake up to the dangers of CFLs, LEDs now offer a true alternative. It's not just marketing either, just one CFL improperly disposed can cause lasting damage to the environment affecting drinking water and food sources we all use.

CFL Mercury Risks

Mercury is only half of the problem with CFLs. If you've ever used one, you know their light is less than ideal. Flickering, drab color, long start up times in cold weather, these are just some of the many reasons consumers are quickly finding CFLs are not a long term solution.

Unmatched Performance, Incomparable Value.

ZetaLux offers the best price/performance ratio in the industry.  Very simply you will not find another LED lighting product that offers the same combination of performance and value as the ZetaLux. Here is a small example of how much you could save by switching just one incandescent to a ZetaLux:

Costs Over 10 Years
All figures calculated at 8 Hours Per Day and $.10 per kWH

ZetaLux LED Light Bulb Cost Comparison

ZetaLux Pays for itself in a little over 2 years at $.10 per kWH

ZetaLux

Incandescent

Initial Cost $49.99 $1.00
Electricity $20.00 $175.2
Replacement  $0.00 (0 Bulbs) $30 (30 Bulbs)
Total Cost $69.99 $206.2

As you can see, ZetaLux Saves you over $13 per light fixture per year and pays for itself in just a little over 2 years! That's just by replacing one light and that doesn't even count other important considerations such as cooling costs and costs associated with purchasing the over 30 incandescent light bulbs needed over that 10 year period. Just think of how large your savings would be by replacing all of your lighting with high efficiency EarthLED LED light bulbs

Making the Switch to LED is Easy.

Making the switch to LED is now easier than ever thanks to the ZetaLux. In addition to its great level of value, we offer a comprehensive 2 year warranty and total support for your lighting project. If after 30 days you're not completely satisfied, simply return your ZetaLux, all you pay are shipping costs.

Early Morning Solar Gadget - The Mana Solar Claw

Written by The Naib

mana solar claw

If you already have a backpack that you like, or don’t like the design of some other solar backpacks, you can now easily turn any pack into a solar pack with the Mana Solar Claw.

This gadget allows you to grab 6 watts of Mana from heaven, enough to charge your cellphone, GPS, Ipod, or other little gadgets. Installation is quicker than you can say 40 years in the desert. I have to admit I like this design. I usually think most gadgets are a waste of time/money/resources. But this design will allow you to keep the backpack you already have (saving money and resources) while adding a useful survival and convenience of having battery recharge capability no matter where you run off to (assuming its not a cave).

It also offers these features

- 6 Watt Solar Panel
- CIGS Solar Cells (Same used in Nasa Space Technology)
- Charges: Cell Phones, Digital Cameras, LCD TV’s, Camcorders, MP3 Players and GPS Units
- Rugged Flexible Solar Cells (Use by the Military)
- Durable Hi-Tenacity Rip Stop Nylon
- Multiple Compartments for digital gear
- Close Cell Padded Laptop Compartment
- Bartac Stitched Reinforced Stress Regions
- Top Grade Nylon Webbing
- Duraflex Buckles
- YKK Zippers

You could easily use this panel on any sort of bag or backpack, want a solar briefcase, done. How about a solar bike basket, done. Solar t-shirt, done. I imagine with a little thinking one could just wear the panel itself (might be uncomfortable) and be a solar human. Either way this guy will charge up all your little gizmos, and do-dads. At 6 watts your looking at a couple hours for a cell phone, but if your trapped in the middle of nowhere and your GPS unit runs out of batteries, you will want a way to charge it.

mana solar claw

It costs $275 which is not really that bad considering the cost of solar cells. If you are interested you can pick one up herehttp://www.blog.thesietch.org/2007/06/22/early-morning-solar-gadget-the-mana-solar-claw/

Transcending the replacement paradigm of solid-state lighting

Jong Kyu Kim and E. Fred Schubert

Optics Express, Vol. 16, Issue 26, pp. 21835-21842        doi:10.1364/OE.16.021835

    Abstract
The field of photonics starts with the efficient generation of light. The generation of efficient yet highly controllable light can indeed be accomplished with light-emitting diodes (LEDs), which are, in principle, capable of generating white light with a 20 times greater efficiency than conventional light bulbs. Deployed on a global scale to replace conventional sources, such solid-state light sources will result in enormous benefits that, over a period of 10 years, include (1) gigantic energy savings of 1.9 × 1020 joule, (2) a very substantial reduction in global-warming CO2 emissions, (3) a strong reduction in the emission of pollutants such as acid-rain-causing SO2, mercury (Hg), and uranium (U), and (4) financial savings exceeding a trillion (1012) US$. These benefits can be accomplished by the “replacement paradigm” in which conventional light sources are replaced by more energy efficient, more durable, and non-toxic light sources. owever, it will be shown that solid-state light sources can go beyond the replacement paradigm, by providing new capabilities including the control of spectrum, color temperature, polarization, temporal modulation, and spatial emission pattern. We will show that such future, “smart” light sources, can harness the huge potential of LEDs by offering multi-dimensional controllability that will enhance the functionality and performance of light sources in a wide range of applications. These applications include optical microscopy, imaging, display technologies, communications, networking, and transportation systems.

    AUR: a Robotic Desk Lamp

    lamp_full-3q-500.jpg

    Performs Lives

AUR: a Robotic Desk Lamp is a robotic desk lamp, a collaborative lighting assistant. It serves as a non-anthropomorphic robotic platform as part of Guy Hoffman's Ph.D thesis on human-robot fluency and nonverbal behavior. The lamp's design was conceived around an existing 5-DoF robotic arm, and is aimed to evoke a personal relationship with the human partner without resorting to human-like features. By retaining the lamp's "objectness", I hope to explore the relationship that can be maintained through abstract gestures and nonverbal behavior alone.

The lamp is animated using a custom pipeline enabling the dynamic control of behaviors authored in a 3d animation system. This week, it will take its first stab at performing alongside human actors in MIT Dramashop's Playwrights in Performance. That's right, a robot, on stage, live, with nothing but an emergency button to save it. What: "The Confessor" - a play by Rony Kubat written especially for this human-robot ensemble.

    When: May 9, 10, 11 @ 8pm
Where: Kresge Rehearsal Room B (seating *very* limited)
How: As part of MIT Dramashop's "Playwrights in Performance" and in collaboration with the MIT Media Lab

Sharp is introducing a new range of solar-powered LED streetlights. These self-contained lights charge during the day, and switch
on automatically when darkness falls. They can operate for 10 years straight without maintenance. They make use of new,
high-intensity LED spotlights, which are ideal for public parks. The LEDs illuminate with a directed light and don’t send light into
the sky (thus causing light pollution). The streetlights also feature a Seismic Motion Sensor that detects the occurrence of a major
earthquake. If an earthquake is detected, the light turns on at full brightness during the night, to assist during possible power interruptions.

Biogas: Producing Ultra-Efficient Fuel From Sewage

    August 24th, 2008 · 5 Comments

We could be generating huge amounts of power from sewage. The process is fairly simple —
just ferment sewage to produce a fuel called biogas. Biogas is almost entirely methane,
and so is natural gas, so the two are essential interchangeable. The potential
to produce biogas is almost entirely overlooked by most countries — except Sweden.

Windspire: Propeller-Free Household Turbine Gets Approval

    By Cephoe: on Renewable Power

    We just featured the
largest wind turbine in the world, now here’s something at the opposite end of the spectrum: a household wind turbine. In the last few years, we’ve seen a lot of mini-wind turbines that haven’t turned out to be very useful. But the Windspire turbine from Mariah Power sounds interesting. The Windspire has a propeller-free vertical-axis design, and is expected to produce about 1800 kilowatt hours per year in 11 mph average wind conditions. That amount of wind power is roughly 25% of a typical household’s energy (or much more if you are particularly energy efficient).

The Windspire is 30 feet tall with a two foot radius, sized below typical residential zoning restrictions. Guidelines for installation sites are generally half an acre of land and relatively windy locations. The Winspire has just passed the ETL safety certification, which means it’s ready to go to market. It is expected to be released this spring, and priced at $3,995.

Windspire features a fully integrated, plug ‘n produce design, including a high efficiency generator, integrated inverter, and wireless performance monitor. The integrated design allows for simple installation (estimated to cost around $1,000). It incorporates a slow speed giromill rotor for virtually silent operation and improved safety and durability. It connects to the household power supply, offsetting electricity use and at times running the electricity meter backwards.

You can also get this wind turbine painted any color you like, to match the surroundings, to stand out as piece of functional art.

                                   unknown-1

A company called GreenCore Air has released an air conditioner
than can be powered by a single 170 watt solar panel. The GreenCore
air conditioning unit can heat and cool a 600 square foot room. It
runs on DC power, so there is no need to put an AC inverter
between the solar panel and the air conditioner. This eliminates the
power losses associated with converting AC to DC.

      compounds, etc.
    •  Mineral Filter - Adds healthy minerals to the water. OR Post-Carbon Filter - Removes volatile organic compounds
and improves water taste and smell. (Machine ships with Mineral Filter. Post-Carbon is an option if you
do not want minerals added to the water).
    • Top Tank UV Sanitizing (Philips TUV UV-C) - Minimizes bacteria levels in the upper “allotment” tank
       to the least possible number.
    • Water Output UV Sanitizing (Philips TUV UV-C) - Ensures clean and safe water is dispensed from the
       cool water tank.
    • Molecular Sieve Faucet Filters - The nozzle is equipped with three molecular sieves (screens) to trap
any fine particles that may be suspended in the water.

      Mini-Z LED Desk Lamp

      By Kate

Here's a hard working, super-adjustable desk lamp with a tiny footprint. The Mini-Z LED Desk Lamp is about as wide as your finger--and comes with a desktop clamp if the base is even taking up too much space. The light is provided by 40 LEDs, and although it's not quite as sophisticated as a Leaf Lamp by Herman Miller ($500), it's far less costly: it retails for $80 over on Think Geek.

Ocean waves are already being used as a source of renewable energy, but could differences
in water temperatures in the sea be our next source of green power? A decade old idea to generate renewable electricity
for the globe with offshore, floating ‘Energy Islands’ could soon become a reality. The concept - creating artificial islands
to collect wind, wave and solar power in the tropics - is based on the work of
    Jacques-Arsène d’Arsonval, a 19th-century
French physicist, who envisioned the idea of using the sea as a giant solar-energy collector.

    Product Description

    Product Description
The breaking of the glass is probably the best known part of the Jewish wedding. It comes right at the end of the ceremony and is followed by festive shouts of "Mazel-Tov" and the bride and groom's first kiss as a married couple. What is the meaning of the breaking of the glass? There are many explanations for this time honored tradition: Even in times of great joy, we reserve a moment to mourn the destruction of the Temple, without which our lives are incomplete. We should remember the fragility of relationships. The loud noise frightens away evil spirits that threaten to steal the souls of the joyous couple. It is the last time the groom gets to put his foot down! An Adventure Rabbi Groom's Cup / breaking the glass kit will be a perfect addition to your wedding ceremony. Our Rabbi supervises the sewing of these beautiful, velvet and satin bags, stitching them with blessings for a long and happy marriage for you and your partner. Solar doesn't have to be so lame.

When I think of solar-powered lights, I think of cheap plastic devices molded into shapes that somewhat resemble
carriage lights with a giant stake permanently attached to their underside for the purposes of permanently wedging the lights
into some forgotten part of your garden.

Designer Damian O'Sullivan sees differently.  His Solar Lampion is a beautiful twist on the solar light, incorporating solar cells
as a central part of his lamp's design.

    Damian_osullivan_solar_3

What's more, the Solar Lampion moves easily from outside to inside, if you ever
want to bring some of that fresh sunlight indoors to brighten up dark nights.

    Damian_osullivan_solar_2

This amazing lamp was even recently featured in the "Design and the Elastic Mind"
exhibition at the MoMA!  His website is currently under construction, but he's
     definitely someone to watch.

    Environmentally and Technologically Advanced Crappers

Hot on the heels of 'Pee standing up for the Earth' come these bogtastic urinals for Europe.
One pint of water per flush might be something to write home about on your side of the pond,
but here in Europe, we've already seen our fair share of
    .

It turns out that the two main problems with not having water run around your loo after each
pee are odor and blockage. Odor isn't as much of a problem as you would think, as specially
designed traps can pretty much eliminate smells escaping. The other problem is blockage -
solids and salts accumulate in the traps of waterless urinals - however, two litres of hot water
a week poured down them is enough to ensure they stay clear.

Furthermore, the people at IFO have solutions for times when you just have to sit down.
Some of their loos will clear the bowl using as little as two litres of water for less serious
matters - whilst effectively clearing the bowl using as little as four litres - a shade over a
    U.S. Gallon.

Furthermore, taking water out of the equation altogether - with a solution that may seem a
little extreme to the average U.S. consumer - but one which might appeal to EcoGeeks is the
    '
' - now being carried at Home Depots - a compost toilet biologically digests waste
to produce harmless compost as a waste product. If the balance of biological functions in a
composting toilet is maintained at the correct levels then it should emit no odor at all!

GUERILLA GARDENING: Strategies for Greening the Hood

Regardless of whether you are an urban, suburban, or rural dweller, there is inevitably a patch
of neglected turf in your neighborhood that might need a bit of TLC and greening. If you see
hidden gardening potential between sidewalk cracks when others see decay and abandon,
well then, you might be a budding guerrilla gardener and not even know it! The
    guerrila gardening
phenomenon is currently sweeping the globe as folks are finding innovative ways to come together
for the optimization of neglected land and paved surface area. It’s a turf war for some, or a poetic
gesture for others, but either way, citizens are rolling up there sleeves to create gardens in the
    most unlikely spaces and places.
