When I woke yesterday morning, I caught the last half-sentence of a radio news item which I interpreted sleepily to mean the Chinese had bought Barclays - lock, stock and cash machines. The words 'Yellow Peril' flashed briefly in mind before I remembered you can't even think such a politically incorrect phrase these days.
Wider awake, I heard the item again and understood that it's not the ultimate high street Chinese takeaway after all. In fact the China Development Bank of Beijing is buying 3.1 per cent of Barclays, and Temasek, the state investment fund of Singapore, will buy 2.9 per cent, their combined €13bn stake enabling Barclays to raise its bid for the Dutch bank ABN Amro to a level which might see off rival bidder RBS.
Is that good or bad? Well, Barclays customers need not worry that their chequebooks are about to be reprinted in

Chinese. The deal does not indicate imminent or distant takeover of Barclays from the east - though if the ABN bid fails, takeover by a US giant such as Bank of America might become a possibility.
Barclays shareholders should look closely to see whether the dilution created by issuing shares to the two new investors will be outweighed by the benefits of stronger links with Asia and the benefits of the ABN falling to Barclays. But the latter is hard to judge in advance, since bank mergers rarely proceed without skeletons falling out of cupboards.
Chinese citizens should be glad to see one of their state banks making an investment which offers a higher return than US Treasury bonds (which is how most of China's surplus funds are held) and could bring valuable knowledge transfers from Western banking.
On balance then, a smart deal for all concerned, if - and in the financial world, this is always a very big if - everything goes to plan.

Incredible as it may seem, The Washington Post has written a five page article exposing new information on Government
mind control possibilities and targeted electromagnetic radiation. The article entitled “Mind Games” begins by painting the
alleged victims as nut cases….
The members of this confessional “club” are not your usual victims. This isn’t a group for alcoholics, drug addicts or survivors of childhood abuse; the people connecting on the call are self-described victims of mind control — people who believe they have been targeted by a secret government program that tracks them around the clock, using technology to probe and control their minds.
The callers frequently refer to themselves as TIs, which is short for Targeted Individuals, and talk about V2K — the official military abbreviation stands for “voice to skull” and denotes weapons that beam voices or sounds into the head…and then portrays the one Congressman who has the courage to stand up and protect us from these abuses as a loon…
The biggest hurdle for TIs is getting people to take their concerns seriously. A proposal made in 2001 by Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) to ban “psychotronic weapons” (another common term for mind-control technology) was hailed by TIs as a great step forward. But the bill was widely derided by bloggers and columnists and quickly dropped….
…but then the Washington Post surprisingly ventures into the truth that the government not only has the capabilities,
but given this government they would likely use these technologies against us…
In response to a Freedom of Information Act request filed for this article, the Air Force released unclassified documents surrounding that 2002 patent — records that note that the patent was based on human experimentation in October 1994
at the Air Force lab, where scientists were able to transmit phrases into the heads of human subjects, albeit with marginal intelligibility. Research appeared to continue at least through 2002. Where this work has gone since is unclear…
Meanwhile, the military’s use of weapons that employ electromagnetic radiation to create pain is well-known, as are some of the limitations of such weapons. In 2001, the Pentagon declassified one element of this research: the Active Denial System, a weapon that uses electromagnetic radiation to heat skin and create an intense burning sensation….
…given the history of America’s clandestine research, it’s reasonable to assume that if the defense establishment could develop mind-control or long-distance ray weapons, it almost certainly would. And, once developed, the possibility that they might be tested on innocent civilians could not be categorically dismissed.Bush Admits to an impeachable offense on National TV

Demand Congress act before the next war
We do not need any further "investigations" by this Congress. Bush and Cheney should be impeached and arrested
immediately as they have broken the law repeatedly. Their lies are responsible for the deaths of 100,000+ Iraqis and
2800+ troops.
A citizen goes to jail for life, perhaps the death penalty, for a single murder. Bush, Cheney and others in their clique
deliberately decieved this nation into a war. This is a monumental crime and those behind it must be held accountable.
100,000 dead, millions of lives shattered, $500 B wasted, hatred of America at an all-time high... for no good reason.
But Halliburton's stock is up (and Cheney's 433,000 stock options), and the oil companies are making record profits....
this is sick- it is an outrage!
Please wake up America.

Joe Jackson Comes Out to New York Society
(image via NySocialdiary)
It's all so Edith Wharton. Or, at the very least, Whit Stillman. We always knew Joe Jackson was a debutante.
Insisting on dancing lessons for the children? Check. An overreliance on cosmetic surgery? Check. Makeup?
Checkmate -- Joe Jackson; all that's missing is the annoying lapdog.
Putting aside the rumors of alleged assassinating Michael Jackson's primate lover post-coitus (Averted Gaze),
or -- even more unlikely -- the beating his son robustly with a "switch" (Exaggerated cough suggesting
feigned detachment)," Joe Jackson is "coming out" to New York sociaety. Our favorite social chronicler David
Patrick Columbia writes in NYSocialDiary today:
"... I traveled a few blocks down to interior designer Geoffrey Bradfields holiday cocktail party. The invite
called for 6 to 8 and I arrived about ten to thinking itd be me and the stragglers. Wrong. The place was
packed and the chilled bottles of Veuve Cliquot were making the rounds and making the rounds. Mr. Bradfield,
the international interior designer only moved into this very large house a few months ago but as is his wont,
it was done.
"... Among the likely suspects quaffing the bubbly were some new faces in this part of the forest: Joe Jackson
also known to the world as the father of Michael, LaToya, Janet, Jermaine, Marlon, Tito, etc. Mr. J has offices
here for his JJP, Inc. and his 'Worldwide Hip Hop Competitions' (http://www.hiphopbootcamp.com/)."

Cranach/John Currin
Lucas Cranach, The Judgement of Paris, 1528, tempera and oil on wood,
Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. c. 1530
and
John Currin, 'Three Friends' 1998
Comment by Rachel Le Goff
First we had Odd Nerdrum reviving the technique and style of Rembrandt now we have John Currin hitting
on Cranach and Durer. Are they aspiring to paint like their old master heroes, or have they just decided
to rely on tried and tested formulas for artistic success? Currin has obviously understood the magnetic
appeal that German renaissance nudes emanate with their pristine alabaster bodies and blondness. These
rosy maidens were the Varga pin-up girls of their day, remote and unattainable to the viewer. Cranach was
painting an ideal of beauty formulated by the tastes of early sixteenth century Northern Europe. That
these cannons of beauty are little changed five centuries later is interesting. Currin has glorified the
smooth cheeked wholesome beauty of w.a.s.p. girls by paralleling them to the models in celebrated paintings
of Cranach's era. Imagine the heads of Uma Thurman, Michelle Pfeiffer and Gwyneth Paltrow placed on
Cranach's bodies, coaxed into a mixture of poses quoting from both renaissance standards and contemporary
manners and you have Currin's formula. Its Hollywood meets the Court of Frederick III. Whilst his 'Three
Friends' is a remake of the classical 'Three Graces' composition inspired from antique sculpture his 'The
Go-See' is a strangely informal/formal arrangement of two young women seemingly sharing a joke. Currin's
models are often smiling as girls do when self-consciously caught by the camera, this feature serves to
distance them from their renaissance prototypes.
Currin also plays at varying the anatomy of his contemporary models elongating the breasts and broadening
shoulders to lend them an individuality not aspired to by Cranach or Durer or their contemporaries like
Hans Baldung Grien. Erasing their overall believability however is a kind of plastic surreal quality that
makes them cousins to the wide-eyed mannequins of Dinos and Jake Chapman and Charles Ray.
Whether Currin is trying to put across a powerful message about timeless beauty and women's place in
history as objects of desire or whether he is just making whimsical attractive paintings that sell well
is hard to discern. In Cranach's time, each painting had a literary source whether scriptural, allegorical
or mythological in subject. Enormous symbolism was embodied by every naked figure he painted. My guess is
that Currin is just using the visual vocabulary of the German sixteenth century masters to add a quirky
twist to his female nude and the contemporary faces that smile from his canvas make that old master world
less forbidding, less intellectual for his modern audience.
Ask any auction house crony what always sells well and he will tell you "naked women and flowers".
The question with Currin is, the running distance of his popularity. There are only so many museum catalogues
he can flick through to borrow poses from German old masters, he will have to move on to Flemish Mannerism
or French nineteenth century Pompier painters to renew his stock.

To Art Like John Currin
April 26th, 2007
Like the title? I wrote it that way to express that I wish I could art like John Currin, because
he has surpassed just being an artist he has embodied the word within him, the man’s work is far
beyond amazing its in a league of its own, classic with an ease. The only thing I don’t like about
John is that he doesn’t have a site dedicated just for him you know a www.johncurrin.com which is
why below you’ll see some links taking you to different places to find his work. I always wonder
how it must feel to create art, the after effects when all your thoughts have been nicely worked
onto a canvas with the use of some hand held utensils, to start off with a blank canvas and end
with a marvel of an art piece just makes my head wander. John is famous for his blunt work, to say,
he has no problem what so ever depicted real life in its natural state, you want sex he’ll give
you sex, you want despair he’ll give you that, if you want to feel it he has a painting for it.
Yet he does it all with a subtle grace to it, all I can say it that before I find myself six feet
beneath some dirt and a patch of grass I want a John Currin painting hanging on my wall.

UPDATE 2/1/07: Part 2: Notes on the Current Currin Pornocopia
reBlogged via Tireshop, 1/10/07:
Demon in the Studio
By Nancy Baker, aka Rebel Belle
[excerpt]
I recently read the Jerry Saltz review of the latest of John Currin's latest exhibition at Gagosian.
I'd like to say that I never really pay attention to reviews or to what the big boys are doing in
their studios. I do what you probably do -- read a lot, ignore most of it, and pay attention to what
drives a stake through my heart. I have a kind of like hate relationship with John Currin. At his
Whitney retrospective, I was not happy. Even the tour guide (woman) wanted to cut his dick off. But
I didn't really want to be angry, because that would make me react in a way that Currin had clearly
staged. It was a most peculiar experience, I felt manipulated. This is indeed a very accomplished
painter and a clever man who has mastered the art of agit prop.
I haven't seen the new show at Gagosian, but I'm sure you know all about it. It's beautiful
pornography, which makes perfect sense in Currin's evolution. But I what I was really struck by was
the similar predicament in which I am struggling, and Saltz' uncanny words that really nailed the
problem.
"Around 1998, John Currin began his rise to the top of every collector’s wish list and commenced his
descent into slick, fussy, quasi–Northern Renaissance academicism. "
Yikes. Mea Culpa.
"By the late '90s, aware perhaps that he was in danger of becoming a "period artist," Currin used
traditional ideas about painterly skill to get beyond shtick. This opened his work up to wide
audiences and helped establish him as perhaps the signature American realist of today.
But this skill soon devolved into shtick.
Currin's surfaces died, as did the conversation around his work, which came to revolve almost entirely
around technical issues. Even he admitted, "I'm conservative," and fretted, "Maybe I'm just an academic realist."
Currin's work was too specific, perverse, mannered and complex to be dismissed as only these things.
But it seemed that after 1998, Currin’s inner contrarian
had turned compliant.
Okay, so he salvaged himself by painting porn.
Good move. I'm not pissed off anymore, it's just images of women being exquisitely rendered as sexual objects.
What a relief. Same agit prop, different costume.

that there are millions of people around the world suffering from this disorder. I know first hand because I
have lived with this often misunderstood disorder for over twenty five years. At the age of six I started to
have facial and body tics. As I got older it worsened. The problems I had included excessive blinking, eye rolling,
throat clearing, nail biting, touching objects etc. During my late teens while I was at college, things started
getting really tough.
I went to see my doctor a few times about my tics. The first couple of times the doctor simply said that it was
nothing to worry about and that it would soon pass. Well it didn't. Eventually he got me to see a couple of
specialists in this field. Although these therapists tried, they couldn't cure my problems. I also tried
alternative therapies such as acupuncture and homeopathy, but unfortunately none of them helped.
That's when I started spending hours almost everyday trying to find a cure to my problems, and then eventually
after around ten years of research I managed to easily cure my mind numbing disorder without any type of
medicine or side effects.
Over the years I noticed that some medical specialists in this field labelled the problems I had as Tourette's
syndrome while a few called it OCD, which is short for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Now what is Tourette 's
syndrome and what is OCD? Before I explain these two disorders, I would like to say that medical professionals
seem to love giving labels to problems people have and at times while doing that, they complicate things. All
I know with my simple mind is that, I lived with these problems for over twenty five years and none of them
could cure my problems. A brief explanation of the terms Tourette's syndrome and OCD, as understood by medical
professionals is given below.
Tourette's syndrome: Tourette's syndrome is classified as an anxiety disorder characterized by tics — involuntary,
rapid, sudden movements or vocalizations that occur repeatedly in the same way. The more common tics are eye
blinking, coughing, throat clearing, sniffing, facial movements.
Individuals with this disorder feel the urge to carry out specific actions such as blinking, coughing etc to
release a build up of tension. The actions they carry out worsen when they are in stress and also when they
are aware of their problem and forcefully try to put a stop to it.
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: In OCD, sufferers experience repetitive, intrusive and unwelcome impulses and
doubts which they find hard to ignore. Obsessions are the impulses people have and reoccur over and over again.
Feeling excessively worried about the hands being dirty for example are obsessive feelings. In order to make
the obsessive feelings go away the compulsions are performed. Excessively washing the hands are compulsions.
The more an individual tries to stop carrying out the rituals the harder he or she would find it to stop and
it worsens when the individual is under stress. Some common OCD's are touching, excessive double-checking,
nail biting, hand washing, cleaning, ordering/arranging.
It can be seen that whether the sufferer's disorder is classified as OCD or Tourette's syndrome, they have
one thing in common. The sufferer feels a strong urge to repeatedly carry out a specific action in order
to release a build up of tension.
How do these feelings originate?
In a game of football (soccer) your team has been awarded a penalty kick and you have been chosen to be
the penalty kick taker. At that moment it wouldn't be unusual to have a thought like “I am going to miss
the goal”. Usually when you start thinking that way the wish comes true. This is a fairly common problem
not just with football; it's the same with any sport whether it's baseball or rugby.
In any situation that provokes anxiety people tend to have recurring thoughts. At times these thoughts can
become so strong that it starts to effect simple tasks which then further increase the anxiety level. If
these recurring thoughts continue for a length of time it could become a vicious cycle that a person finds
difficult to break. Tourette's fall in this category.
The key to stopping this disorder is to use a unique and effective technique to eliminate the vicious cycle
of Tourette's.
Various types of relaxation methods can help to calm the nerves but does NOT cure anxiety disorders. The quick
and effective technique that I am offering goes right down to the root cause of the problem and simply turns
it off. You can even use this technique while walking. Whether your disorder is labelled as Tourette's or OCD,
this technique will put a stop to it.
In the E-book "The Root Cause" this technique is explained step-by-step from an ex-sufferers point of view. A
person suffering from this disorder for a long period could also develop Panic attacks, Fear of rejection,
Fear of failure and Social fear. In this E-book, one simple cure for all these anxiety disorders is explained.

There are too many labels, medicines and hospitals, without the deep understanding of root causes and teaching
individuals how to find and correct what I call core beliefs, with repetition and positive reversals of negative
feelings and ideas, imprinted upon us in childhood.
Great work. Thanks for sharing.
I do training in Switzerland on Powerlessness and Empowerment - "A Guided Journey" - this year, as every year,

Whether you are young or old, had tics for a few weeks or several years, it makes no difference; using this
simple but effective technique you can quickly eliminate them without any side effects.
I would like to mention that, the last thing a sufferer of this anxiety disorder should do is forcefully try
to stop the tics because that would only fuel the anxiety, yet most sufferers do exactly that. If I were to
tell you to use your will power to NOT think of a red apple, you would find that quite difficult! It's the
same with this type of anxiety disorder.
You are NOT mentally ill !!
You are NOT physically ill !!
After researching for around ten years, I realised that Tourette's is not a mental or physical problem; it
is a behaviour problem that can be easily cured. It's about dealing with the root cause of the problem.
When the root cause is dealt with, the urge to have the tics simply fade away. I am now free from this
disorder and now find it hard to believe that I unnecessarily lived with it for such a long time.
Medicines at times may seem to minimise the tics for a while by suppressing the mind but does not remove
the root cause of the problem. Quite often these medicines leave sufferers with side effects, without any
reduction to the tics.
After curing my anxiety disorder, one thing I really wanted to do was to make as many people as possible
aware of how easily anxiety disorders can be cured without any medicine and without any side effects.
Because of that intense desire I set about writing a book based on my personal experience of living with
this disorder and also what I discovered from several years of intense research that I undertook in order
to cure my problem. The end result is this book, “The Root Cause”.

skall vill jag ha en artikel som ursprungligen publicerades i The Oregonian: "It can't happen here --
Or can it?" av Richard L

Two old friends of mine -- a Jewish couple in their 80s, both retired university
professors who fled Nazi Germany in the late 1930s and eventually became
U.S. citizens -- made a stunning remark to me a few months ago: "You know,
all our lives we have blamed our parents and our parents' generation for allowing Hitler to gain
control. Now we're beginning to see how powerless they
must have felt to stop what was happening all around them."
My friends' melancholy comment came back to me and a palpable chill ran
down my spine when I read about the Gestapo-style arrest of U.S. citizen
Maher "Mike" Hawash. Two weeks ago, police took the 38-year-old Intel
software contractor from his Hillsboro home and put him in solitary
confinement (according to his wife) in a federal prison. No charges have been
filed against him, and his attorneys reportedly are forbidden to discuss the
case. What is happening to our country?

Some Still Scared of LSD,
After All These Years
a letter by Robert Merkin posted at
DrugWar.com
April 17, 2003
photo from Erowid Chemical Vaults
The Hamilton (Ontario Canada) Spectator ran an "anniversary" feature on LSD Wednesday,
April 15, 2003, so Robert Merkin decided he would "drop 'em a line."
Letters to the Editor The Hamilton Spectator To the Editor:
Re "The LSD Colours: Mostly Shades of Grey" (16 April): It's sort of sweet and childlike to hear
retired Hamilton narc John Gruhl sum up thirty-five years of LSD this way: "... it's a
verydangerous narcotic. And there's nothing good about it -- it's only evil."
If forced to reduce a profoundly rich, vast and complicated phenomenon to an eight-year-old boy's
comic-book battle between good and evil, my experiences and those of most people I know who
used LSD were mostly good.
As the decades roll by since our LSD summers, I notice that my
richest friendships and deepest admirations linger with those who
indeed chose to spend a season in their young adulthood taking
trips to destinations where LSD sent them. We all came back. But
we returned with a deeper understanding of ourselves, a deeper appreciation of what should be
important in life, and a deeper sense of realities beyond just (in the words of a rock song)
"birth, school, work, death."
None of us became drug detectives, though it wouldn't at all surprise me if some became
"protect and serve"-style community police officers. Some have suggested LSD destroyed peoples'
ambitions. I found quite a different phenomenon. Those who took LSD seemed to
make conscious choices to lead less aggressive, less rapacious, less material, less shallow lives.
Beauty, nature, love, friendship, creation and celebration were raised to much higher priorities
in their subsequent lives. They sought to understand the moral and ethical dimensions of life more
clearly.
I would not insult or patronize them
by justifying their post-LSD lives by
their financial achievements --
"I took a lot of acid and now I run a
Fortune 500 company." But they did
okay, they kept themselves as afloat
as or higher and drier than most people; I never saw one of those
mythical burnout acidheads in my years managing a winter homeless
shelter.
Though I've heard all the "Dragnet" horror stories about people who used LSD, the only real
horror stories I ever personally encountered were the things that happened to people when the
copsarrested them. And LSD didn't cause those horrors; legislators, prosecutors and judges
did. That people went to prison for wanting to take LSD is far more surreal than anything I
experienced on an acid trip If the music seemed strangely repetitive or unstructured,
it wasn't banal, mechanical, predictable and manipulative like most pop music; the most
beloved of the LSD musicians were adored because they were trying to take us on original
and unexpected adventures.
In the entire body of acid music, there are no glorifications of gang violence, violence toward
and abuse of women, no gay-bashing, no racism, no encomiums to material possessions
and superwealth.Nobody took acid and suddenly lusted to become super-rich and menace
their neighbors. Nobody took acid and suddenly wanted to bomb Vietnamese or Iraqis.
In some unspecified academic and intellectual communities, your Nobel prize in literature and
the sciences is inextricably intertwined with your youthful acid trips -- it was a drug of particular
appeal to big IQs, the creative crowd, and the voraciously curious and adventurous. It was a
drug for romantics, in most senses of that word.
I do not mean to extol LSD's virtues or make magical, paradisical
claims for it. Rather, I would contrast it with the rigid, simplistic, puritanical, aggressive,
hypercompetitive and often warlike culture
of LSD's lifelong bitterest enemies. LSD's promise of inner discovery was always attractive to
those who had read Socrates:
"The unexamined life is not worth living."
To write LSD off as "only evil" -- this isn't just a cop,
this is a dumb cop. In his retirement, he's probably
keeping his health afloat on medicines discovered
by old Berkeley acidheads.

Good heavens! Dahmer? Up there?

If you get to heaven, say hi to Jeffrey Dahmer. That's where he is, according to a new book by the pastor who
baptized the serial killer in a prison whirlpool tub.
By my calculation, Dahmer never served a day in prison for all his murders. When he was slain by a fellow inmate
in 1994, he was still working off the time from his revoked probation on an earlier molestation case.
Now we hear he didn't get any time in hell either. By now the devil has given Dahmer's pitchfork to someone else.
Rev. Roy Ratcliff said he believes Dahmer was saved. He's not excusing what Dahmer did, but rather expressing
faith that no sin is too great to be forgiven by God.
Ratcliff's book, "Dark Journey Deep Grace: The Story Behind a Serial Killer's Journey to Faith," is set for release
next month. It's a paperback priced at $13.99.

Buy a link here"The book says, look, the lowest of the low can be redeemed. The same thing can be true
of you, too," Ratcliff said when I reached him in Madison, where he leads Mandrake Road Church of Christ.
It was in April of 1994, two years after Dahmer was convicted of killing 15 men and boys, that Ratcliff got a
surprising call. Dahmer was requesting to be baptized, and the prison chaplain wanted to know if Ratcliff
would do it. Queasy at first, Ratcliff agreed.
When they first met at Columbia Correctional Institution, Dahmer told Ratcliff his family quit going to church
by the time he was 5. But now he wanted his sins washed away and he wondered if there was a hose of
forgiveness big enough for the job.
The baptism took place May 10. Ratcliff remembers two coincidences about that day. There was an eerie
near-total solar eclipse that darkened the sky when he arrived at the prison. And another serial killer,
John Wayne Gacy, was executed in Illinois.
Dressed in a white robe, Dahmer was submerged in the whirlpool. "Welcome to the family of God," Ratcliff said.
"He turned to God because there was no one else to turn to, but he showed great courage in his daring to
ask the question, 'Is heaven for me, too?' " Ratcliff would say later at Dahmer's memorial service.
Ratcliff concurs with the jury that Dahmer was sane, and he also believes he was sincere in his desire for
religious conversion. Unlike many prisoners who suddenly find Jesus in the jailhouse, Dahmer had nothing
worldly to gain.
No one has ever criticized Ratcliff to his face for baptizing Dahmer, but he's heard that people said they didn't
want to go to any heaven that would accept the likes of Milwaukee's worst criminal.
And the media at the time of the baptism asked him our usual lame questions. Does this mean Dahmer should
go free? Would you allow Dahmer to baby-sit for your children?
"My vocation forces me to believe that people can change," the pastor told me.
Ratcliff's point is this: If you believe in God and you believe that this God forgives sins of the truly contrite, then
don't be so surprised that Dahmer was saved from damnation. I asked Ratcliff if an eon or two in purgatory
wouldn't be wise here, but he said that's more of a Catholic thing.
After the memorial, Dahmer's parents offered a donation. Ratcliff and his wife used the money to buy a wall clock.
It still marks earthly time - a pinprick compared to the eternal afterlife Dahmer supposedly enjoys - in the pastor's
living room.
"We call it the Jeff clock," Ratcliff said.
